You’re so right about the sound being good - if I start watching a YT vid and it has bad sound I’ll immediately start watching the next video - audio quality is way more important than video quality

You have learned so much since I first joined when you had like 600 subscribers and this was such a generous video to share. Many youtubers are quite secretive about what they use to produce what they deliver and I understand why, it's a competitive market at the end of the day. Thank you for such valuable information to what may be a fledging youtuber in the not too distant future. You are right to preserve the tricks and learnings of filming for reward. I mean, at the end of the day, you are becoming a teacher of the trade through your own experiences and time of successes and failures and every teacher deserves some income for shared knowledge. Thank you.

cheers James. A lot of detail there. It was very helpful to see the gear you use. What I'd like to know is how you grow the courage to appear in front of the camera. I hate how I look in photos etc and when I did do a few vids for my viv-i-van goes forth channel, they were always behind and not in front. I'm scared of looking horrible and annoyed how good all the youtubers I follow look. I wish I didnt feel like it but Im scared of doing "pieces to camera" and I admire yours and Helen's confidence. Much respect-🙏 Kenny.

Good show again James. The Pocket 3 is great, I still have the older Pocket 1. I like the lens size on the 1 but not for vlogging as such and it's not so good in low light; that's where the 3 shines.

I am not into technology at all, I have no idea if I'm an android or an apple - I just like the videos that you make and the interesting places you go to. But this was surprisingly interesting to watch ... and I loved that hovering drone, amazing, totally gobsmacked how it can do that stuff !! Ironically, my son is currently at university studying film & creative writing, but even I can see the results you get by investing in a good set of gadgets and putting the effort in to make your videos technically pleasing as well as entertaining. Shame that You Tube fed me about FIVE ad breaks in that 28 minute video ! Crazy ...

Hi I have a DJI OP3 and had same issues as you said… re: waterproofing- there are now 2 types of case for it (not DJI made), one is like a GoPro design and the other is a dome design (which I’ve just ordered)- both waterproof to around 40M. I’m hoping the dome one will be useful for the “torch” mode but for around £25 as long as it keeps the rain off then it will be worth it IMO 👍

It’s a wonder thieves don’t invest in one to check out properties to rob! I’m sure they already do..I can’t remember now if it makes a buzz sound or not! They’d want one that doesn’t obviously. Or even perverts peeking through windows ..as even if things are against the law..most folk don’t get caught via lack of evidence. Sadly we have to think of these things going on 😞I’m sure police will use them too, but only for investigations that make them money! A high end drugs bust etc
But it is an amazing invention.

An interesting video, James, and thanks for the tips 👍. I could definitely see a difference between the different cameras that you showed. I started with a used action camera costing £20 lol, and the other day purchased a dji osmo 4 instead of gopro, but have not been out yet to use it. All I'm doing is filming my trips out on my mobility scooter. I'm not really bothered about growing a channel. Basically my videos (only done a couple & a couple of shorts lol) are showing other mobility scooter users in my area where they can access/visit on a scooter, and for showing anyone what hills in the area my make/model of mobility scooter can climb up. If I see anything interesting on route, I'll take photos/extra short videos with my phone. With regards to equipment, it all depends on what a youtubers ultimate aim and goal is. I get annoyed about poor quality sound and there being no subtitles on a video.......lots of youtubers do not take into consideration those of us with hearing problems when they are producing/editing their videos. I've lost count of the number of videos that I've stopped watching. Perhaps when you do your patreon videos, you can mention that subtitles are essential for the hard of hearing community.

Brilliant Vid!...More of these please!! As a retired photographer I have nothing but praise for James (& Helen)! Appreciate these techy tips as I want to put out more vids of high quality, and top audio, but unsure "what" camera to pair with "which" mic for appealing results! Multi-cam appeals to me, but then need upgrade computer, loads of Ram, fast processor etc. etc. I predict this channel will go from strength to strength owing to Personality, Charisma, and Passion of J & H. The edited clips are just the "right" length - and perfectly transitioned before upload - and the occasional cinematic arty inserts are off the scale!!!!! Perhaps UA-cam aligrothems will eventually reward content for Quality, rather than just Quantity?????

Hi James. Just watched your vlog about your cameras which is really interesting. I do a bit of cycling and have a Go Pro Hero 7 fixed on my bike to record any close passes or if some idiot knocks me off my bike. The problem I have is that the battery life is very short if I have it on video (about 20minutes) and not much longer if I set it on 3 second still shots. I've had to buy two extra batteries to use when I'm out on a ride. My question is: How long does your Go Pro 12 battery last when you're out vlogging and do you have to have extra batteries to put in during filming?
    Cheers, Alan

Brilliant video James, answering questions some of us smaller you tube channels want to ask but daren’t.
I remember once you mentioned what you pay for music content etc and other things.
I’d like to know, what other platforms you use such as Facebook and instagram etc as I’ve not got any experience of these but know about them of course, but as soon as you look at something you have to join and open an account.
I don’t even know how from a personal Facebook account you separate it from your you tube channel ? I’ve plenty of questions that I hope you’ll answer in future videos.
I use go pro 3 & 4 but they don’t have stabilisation when moving so I still prefer cheap sport cameras that do a good job.
When I started I only used a Samsung android but bought an iPhone 7 off a mate that has a common focusing fault and it seems to be all about money and updates with apple so I’m not a fan.
Editing Software is another thing you may cover I bought power director for a year but couldn’t figure it out and only used it for thumbnails till I found a free way of doing it.
Uploading your first video onto you tube is so nerve racking with all the forms and questions and threats of copyright etc and questions about is it made for children absolutely daunting to go through the upload process.
I love how you have gained so much confidence since you started, having watched you put those keys through that door, and struggling with selling online, I can relate to what you have been through and am pleased things are on the up for you.
If you can do it I’m sure others can.
Although I’m a faceless channel as I only have a fave for radio lol
I wouldn’t want to be famous in any way and like my anonymity.
That also must take time to get used to seeing and hearing yourself when editing ?
Anyway I could go on but want you to know what you are doing might not be for everybody but there are those of us out there who will be absolutely glued to what you upload.
Cheers James and regards to Helen.
P.S. sorry you didn’t go to Deal as you may have found the story of the famous Carry On Star resident Charles Hawtry and his problem he had with the local pubs landlords etc quite interesting.
And also the fire he had at his house and was photographed without his toupee with a very fit fireman outside lol
Check it out online I’m sure you and Helen will have a good laugh !
Cheers keep at it love the content !❤

Hi again James, sorry it was a long message, (What a Carry On ! ) Lol, as I have so much to say on the subject.
Would Be interesting in your future videos etc to cover even the way You Tube make contact with you, when you’ve reached the required subscribers and views.
Also naming your channel, if others have the same name, how that works against your chances of success if it does ? It’s so hard to come up with a name for a channel as lots have already been taken.
Also the Algorithm, maybe it doesn’t affect you now ? but I see my videos just stopping at just over 400 views time after time and if I don’t upload for a week or so, then it can stop to minimal views daily, from in my case 8000 in the month and 2000 in a week. Down to less than 200 in 48 hours, It’s weird how you can be up then go down so quick on the graphs in YT studio, bit like eBay pages being so far back for your adverts till last day of auction or sale and they get seen, but you tube is the opposite way round.
Anyway I’ll keep watching with great interest, seems like you are covering most of the questions I would have asked in this video.
Have a great weekend to you and Helen, cheers !

My favorite setup is my Olympus OM-5 with a Tamron 7-14mm wide angle lens and a Rode VideoMicPro. It's my go-to, however ... it's like carrying a watermelon on a stick. Which is also why it's back in the states and I'm using a GoPro 12 while we're traveling.
You're right, the GoPro is a great all around vlogging camera, especially with the Media Mod and an external mic. But! (And there's always a but, right) ... zoom is non-existent. Everything is wide angle and you have to try and punch in during post. (4k helps). That's why I love my Olympus so much. Physical zoom, stabilized 4k, plus in-camera zoom as well. But again, weight and size. Especially when I mount it on a gimbal. I look like something from Mad Max. 🙂
Thanks for sharing your setups. I did consider the DJI, but I'm seriously not gentle on gear and I would snap that little gimbal right off. LOL!

And PS ... you sold me on that drone. It looks so simple to use. I don't travel with my Mavic because of size and having to remote control it while pretending I'm not. That one looks PERFECT!
