Nate, go to Kadugannawa railway station on the Kandy - Colombo mainline. It's where the railway museum is. I'm sure it will interest you. Once you are in Kandy railway station, get a ticket to Kadugannawa station, only a few LKR. Another place of interest would be Maradhana train restoration/repair center. You may find old British relics.

This is Class M8 locomotive made in Diesel Locomotives Work (DLW now BLW), Varanasi, India. We got Class M7 locomotives made in UK Imported in 1980s' still in running condition. Also Y Class Hunslet shunting locomotives Imported in 1969 still operating. Not to forget Class M1 Locomotive though the fleet was retired dacades ago one Class M1 Locomotive made in UK can be seen in Kadugannawa railway museum. Also there're 2nos of Steam railway cranes imported from Ransomes and Rapier in 1950 & one Cowans Sheldon steam railway crane imported in 1953 still in use.

the track that is currently being used was not built by the British. The Track that was used by the British was narrow gauge. During the 80's and 90's and 70's, Sri Lanka replaced all the narrow gauge to the broad gauge which is currently being used.
India has provided many credit lines to Sri Lanka from which you can only purchase Indian made goods. Because of that you see many Indian made carriages and engines
