Nate, go to Kadugannawa railway station on the Kandy - Colombo mainline. It's where the railway museum is. I'm sure it will interest you. Once you are in Kandy railway station, get a ticket to Kadugannawa station, only a few LKR. Another place of interest would be Maradhana train restoration/repair center. You may find old British relics.

Sri lanka is using engines from Canada, India and few of French.. long ago majority of engines were Canadians which was 50+ old yet still they are the work horses of the fleet. now they are gradually moving to modern Chinese powersets and Indian made engines and compartments.

@@xtreme_lk In the colonial days for Australia, the “prisoners” they sent were mainly from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland because jails in the UK were overflowing. It was a time in British history where they’d throw you in jail for stealing a loaf of bread. Hence… they sent people to Australia as an ‘indentured servant’ for a period of time to eventually earn your freedom.

the track that is currently being used was not built by the British. The Track that was used by the British was narrow gauge. During the 80's and 90's and 70's, Sri Lanka replaced all the narrow gauge to the broad gauge which is currently being used.
