- “Science has always been my passion.” Sarah-Jeanne Royer, our resident oceanographer and research scientist on plastic degradation, has a storied background. In this episode, she takes us from her childhood in Quebec to catching a wave and peaceful island life in Hawaii… with a stop along the way to study for her degree while in a bunker in war-torn Afghanistan.
Sarah tells a slightly worse-for-wear Dan van der Kooy how plastic marine debris on Hawaiian beaches is similar to trash found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, along with the importance of staying focused (and very, very patient) when conducting research. She also ponders whether or not it’s worth spending time and energy to handle emotion-led critisicm (“it makes me sad”), and tells us why we’re all “shedding plastic” when we work out.

This is a very important study. I find it fascinating that a lot of the debris TOC finds at the Pacific garbage patch consists mostly of Marine debris. It seems like a lot of the land based trash blows back onto the beaches.
I appreciate the amount of science TOC is putting into this study.😊

Anyone watching this, go out today and do some cleaning up at your local sea/beach
Some good advice for anyone wanting to do some cleaning up at their local seas: go into the water with a small fishing net and you'll be surprised at how many little bits of plastic you'll be able to collect. There's usually a part of your local sea where there'll be a lot of seaweed in the water and thats where you'll find a lot of plastic. Also more is washed up during stormy weather.
What we also can do is reduce The się od plastics. Use cotton bags for example. Buy drinks in glass bottles. Using metal od glass straws for drinks. ❤
Keep in mind, it isn't exclusively the government or corporation's fault. WE as consumers have to be responsible with how we dispose of OUR trash. We shouldn't be part of OUR modern throwaway society. Reduce-Reuse-Recycle.

The most troubling problem with plastic pollution is that vast majority of it eventually breaks down into microplastics which then gets into our food and drinking water and, bodies. Nobody really knows what the effects of this are. Statistics online you can find easily say the average person today now will likely consume about a life bouy-sized amount of plastic every 10 years, or a tablespoon full a week. Its in everything now. Just like carbon pollution we don't see this, so its much easier to ignore.
That's brilliant! Any chance you have already some numbers or data to share with us? I live on the Canary Islands and we have a lot of micro plastic and I am always concern about finding a solution to remove it. I read that oil can gather the micro plastic as both have different polarity. But what do we do if it goes deeper and is oil a real alternative? Thanks for your researches and please share some pre prints!

Some trash sattelite tracker and detector would our next big project on world clean up..its increase effectivity on mision and team who depart from every base..perhaps world trash summit would fastening the sattelite and make team special works on sattelite..plan.health.economic designer is already on our side..more over its really makes everything looks "ready to eat"..thanks

Indian Govt is making roads and highways from waste plastic so it could be use for years and easy to decompose so I urge this organisation to use ocean waste plastic in same way as India 🇮🇳 does in its country

I can say one thing. Plastic is light weight.and don't travel down in the sand. Gold and lead travel deeper down to rock bottom. Just to make your study easier. 😊
Not exactly. Beach sand is a coarse, excellent grinding and polishing medium. It will take a relatively large piece o plastic and basically break it down into smaller and smaller pieces which filter lower and lower into the sand until it becomes a 'micro particle' almost indistinguishable from fine sand. When it reaches the water level layer this process will be even more aggressive.
