I appreciate how straight up, honest, and scientific your team is. Many NGOs would be tempted to pump up the hysteria by confirming myths and generating interest and funding that way. But you straight up say, for example, the amount of plastic produced that winds up (and stays) in oceans is less than 1%. While your work is still vital, you don't further public misconceptions to generate support. Bravo.

I've been so encouraged by your work in the ocean and rivers.
I watch videos by Ocean Conservation Namibia who rescue seals from plastic entrapment. Mostly they are untangling the seals from fish line that has been discarded into the ocean but there are other items too like gaskets and packing straps. It's good to be reminded why your group exists - to clean the oceans so that marine creatures don't eat or get entangled in plastic. Just 5 grams of fishing line can kill a fully grown seal.

The plastic you are removing from the ocean will not photo-degrade into the ocean - they'll still photo-degrade, just not directly into the ocean. The argument against cleaning up the ocean doesn't hold water for that reason alone. It also doesn't assign a high enough value to the damage plastics in the ocean cause to ocean-based life (including shore birds that mistake plastics for food) as well as the humans that consume it. Just because the job is huge does not mean we get to ignore it. Thank you for all that you are doing!

Make up your mind the whole word knows that most plastic pollution come from rivers in third world countries most have no sewers and removing the Great Garbage Patch is the absolute best thing to ever happen over 25 million tons of waste has been removed already and no regular container plastics will ever break down or it would have already happened 1 thing you said was true thanks OCEAN CLEANUP KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK YOUR DOING

    • @melaniehoshall6942

@@tod4924 I'm confused by your response. If your comment is really a response to mine, "Make up your mind" sounds like I'm being asked to make a choice in a false dichotomy or like I've said something contradictory when I haven't. Plastics do photo-decay/breakdown and become microplastics which are everywhere now. The Ocean Project cannot remove those microfine particles, but they are helping to reduce the raw materials present in the ocean that create them.

@@helenamcginty4920 Even as an old lady, you do have search engines available to you. But sure I'll copy you an answer:
"ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response; a term used to describe a tingling, static-like, or goosebumps sensation in response to specific triggering audio or visual stimuli. These sensations are said to spread across the skull or down the back of the neck and, for some, down the spine or limbs. When experiencing ASMR sensations, some people report pleasant feelings of relaxation, calm, sleepiness or well-being."
Basically it's people watching other people scratch objects and talking softly into microphones, it's weird and people use it as a blanket term nowadays for pleasing content which isn't the right use of the word.

    • @Cosmichorrido
      @Cosmichorrido 23 дні тому +1

I am sad that the fraction of plastic isnt greater. Its so wasteful to just burn the raw product instead of reforming for use as lubricant or plastics. I guess most of humanity just isnt capable of seeing the consequences of losing crude oil yet. If we just burned the plastics we cant readily recycle right now, we would already be much better off, with much less problems down the road. The ash from these plants is just so much easier to handle than Pollution from plastic particulates.

We are all responsible for plastic pollution. We all need to take responsibility for the plastic we buy as it all pollutes the earth somewhere. Do we take water from home in a reusable container or do we buy bottled water. I stopped buying lettuce because of the plastic containers. I still get plastic from some of my vegetables but we have to force the producers to come up with a new product. There are bags like plastic but are made from plant cellulose. What did we use prior to plastic

I remember going to the grocery store with my grandma. Paper bags were used for fruits and veggies. Meats were wrapped in butcher paper at the butcher's counter, same with deli meats and cheeses. Milk, orange juice, any juice, soda were all in glass. Condiments were in glass. Glass jars and their lids were reused and reused over and over again. Bread came in waxed paper bags. Coffee beans were in paper bags and fresh ground at the register counter. Groceries were in sturdy paper bags then reused for garbage bags, lunch bags, or made into school book covers.

A fundamental problem that is overlooked in my opinion is the fact that very little garbage collection facilities exist along the rivers especially in lesser developed countries. There are no roads in these communities to facilitate collection so where can the people dispose of their waste? We have this problem here in South Africa because our corrupt government rather misuse funds for their own luxuries before providing convenient garbage collection facilities

Very good. On new plastic being added, that would depend on the country. Three countries I know, Australia is trying to do better, states have banned single use bags, bottles have 10c repayable deposits. Japan is terrible, the public resists the government's efforts. Indonesia uses a lot and being islands, disperses it. So campaigning is important, too.

If this idea holds water, or sinks, lol, to what degrees has this thought of sinking platics been tested and or investigated beyond just the specific gravity of plastic? What happens to the plastic after you get it out of the ocean?

After sorting and filling up our containers onboard, we bring them back to shore for recycling. With the help of our partners, we plan on turning the ocean plastic into durable and valuable products, as we aim to ensure that it never re-enters the marine environment. Thank you for all that you do in the never ending collection of the plastic pollution. What needs to happen is plastic that is used for food and beverage needs to cease completely. Go back to the way our grandparents/great grandoarents shopped. Grocery stores having actual butchers, and cuts were done at the counter and wrapped in butcher paper, not Styrofoam with diaper material at the bottom and wrapped in plastic wrap. Bread was in waxed paper bags. ALL beverages were in returnable glass bottles. Ketchup, mayo, mustard, dressings, peanut butter, jams, were all in glass bottles/jars. There were local bottling companies where people can get a case of 12 soda (about 1 liter bottle size) bottles, as well as beer in bottles. All returnable because you would put a deposit on the wooden crate and the bottles. There was usually a milk store in every town where milk was sold in glass bottles, orange juice in glass bottles, ice cream in paper 1/2 gallon boxes (not lined in plastic), put a deposit on the bottles and bring the bottles back to get more milk/juice. Chips and pretzels were in paper bags or boxes. Cereal was in boxes, no plastic anything. My grandma would bring the box of cereal home and put it in large glass jars. Same with oats. Rice was sold in burlap bags or in boxes and she would put it in glass jars. Measuring cups were glass. She had no plastic utensils. It was stainless steel or wooden spoons/stirrers. She had wooden cutting boards, not plastic. There was nonsuch thing as plastic water bottles being carried around. They used a glass thermos. Lunch boxes were metal. Coolers were metal. Laundry baskets were woven wicker or braided cotton. Laundry soap was in big boxes. It will take a complete reset to all people to change from plastic. We have polluted our earth and now people have nano plastics in their bodies accumulated to credit cards. That is pathetic and unacceptable.

I would be interested in paying for a live view subscription to their ships. I understand that most of it would be incredibly boring but I’d like to contribute and feel that it would be interesting. Don’t know if it’s possible.

I wish you people would get your story straight about the great pacific garbage patch. I watched the video about how your people said it didn't exist then several months later that was all your people talked about how real it is in another video! It has existed for many many years and made headlines all over the planet as the documents you showed proved!

The misconception about contribution is biased since rich countries export their plastic waste to poor countries like Thailand or Philippines. Since they can't manage well the recycle it'll follow the cycle you explained (dump area, river, beach, sea)
You can't stop them from exporting/importing waste because its economic for both stakeholder.
We can only help poor countries to manage those waste better, improving or make cheaper recycling treatment.
