I am an Afghan, studying in China with all UA-cam being blocked, still finding a way to watch Peter McKinnon's videos. You have given me immense amount of motivation since the first time I have watched your videos. If you could ever go to some hospitals and just randomly speak to the sick, i am sure they would recover faster due to the fact that you can make people smile. You are a blessing! Thank you for being here Pete!
Brother I can’t tell you how much this was worth to me! Seriously I’m sitting here in my car on break with my little shitty Yi M1 $400 camera with a Rokinon Cinema 24mm on it, feeling all the dejection in the world, and mind you I’m no spring chicken. I found myself thinking “what the hell am I doing?” You’re too old to want this or too poor to afford a camera with which you can do some real work...blah blah blah on and on. And then I watched this. Seriously man, this video nearly brought me to tears, not that I’m easily given to tears, but it was just a confluence of forces and timing. You literally just brought me out of an abyss my brother. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos and lessons. You do more good than maybe you know. Many many Thanks, William
I am a firm believer that skill or creativity is much more important than fancy equipment- don’t get me wrong nice equipment is great but if you give it to someone with no skills/creativity/eye for composition they won’t be able to do much with it. So don’t worry about your camera for now, just keep practicing!
Update: I took all your comments to heart....the kind ones that is. I kept rocking out with my Yi M1, working on my eye and composition. Something began to develop, slowly at times but sometimes in leaps and aha moments. That “shitty” little camera became my teacher and fostered in me a deeper love and respect for the art. I travelled with it and even did a few jobs with it. I am now using an EOS R and could not be happier with it. I am gradually building and refining my portfolio, and editing a short film and loving every moment of it. Funny thing is though: my favorite Photo was taken with my M1 😂. I’ve since gifted my niece with it and so her journey begins...but I miss my little Yi M1. Seriously speaking, thanks Peter, you rock brother and thank all of you for relating, for sharing and for all the encouragement. Stuff like this creates little pockets of awesome in this world.🙏🏽
I think it's kind of douchey. I live in New Jersey and it reminds me of something some North Jersey greaseball would commission lol. Don't get me wrong, the photos are beautiful in terms of technique and color and staging but the shoot itself? Not a fan.
You know, I’ve been watching Pete’s vids for about two hours now. And I have to say...there’s something about Pete that makes you want to burst out of yourself and live your truest life. To break that ceramic mask that you wear everyday as a facade of “this is who I am”, but really is a prison for your creative soul. Beyond his amazing photography and video inspiration, watching a person live their lives completely uninhibited by the boxes of society is hypnotically intoxicating and wonderfully liberating. Thank you Pete, for making us listen to the drum beat of our calling inside all of us.
btw even so I do think Pete done much better than where I start ... I wanted to do some comparison similar to the title for the last 5 yrs... never actually do it : |

photos in my local photography group like this. I would never comment to discourage people, but I have seen many black and white/sepia watermarked images of dumpsters and brick walls and they make me cringe so hard! I love everything about this. I think it's amazing that 10 years later, you're still friends with your first paid gig. I recently started going through my photos from 7 years ago on my hard drive so I screamed when you said that back then you felt it was a great shot, because that's exactly how I felt when I saw my work. Now...I wish I could go back with what I know now and shoot it all over again. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for this. Just had a friend say my photography sucks simply because that’s what she heard from some random guy she met so I was feeling really down. Nice to know even pros used to get it wrong. Just have to keep working
Oh I've heard it too! Plenty of times. But just don't let that bring you down. Keep learning. Even Peter started from scratch and here he is. Probably we all can try and be somebody like him. All the best!
Thank you so so much for this video. For two years now, I've been feeling down about myself when if comes to photography. And this video actually helped me feel better about myself. 👌
I’m so glad you showed the new work along with the old photos. That is what really demonstrated how far you’ve come and how far we can go if we put in the work. Great video.
I recently got my sister the camera she wanted for Christmas and thought nothing of it. But after just using it with her for a couple days I've gotten hooked and discovered an interest I never realized I had. Now I'm currently waiting to buy my own. I've been doing nothing but doing research while I wait. Learning as much as I can. Let me tell you man, I'm beyond thankful I ran into your channel. I've learned so much from you it's incredible. Your videos are super informative and very entertaining. You're great at your craft and you're an inspiration to me and to a lot of people. Thank you and keep putting out great content. P.s. I literally never bother commenting or liking any video I watch but your channel is on another level!
You know, I learn Stage Lighting before because I was in Theatrical performance as Lighting Design before and when i got into Photography, That help a lot. Sometimes People underestimated the power of Lighting, i say don't photography is basically light so do your homework
Peter is great to watch your videos and I loved hearing you tell people that it's all about learning light control. Amen to that. I've been a pro snapper for over 35 years and still love to hear great content and enthusiasm for photography. You inspired me to start my own channel this week, thank you. keep the vids coming

Your bad photos are my good ones. LOLL. I feel like you're AmateurShaming me.
Notice how he said Stock Photography wasn't booming yet back then. When you're the only guy who has a picture of autumn leafs online, everyone who wants autumn leafs has to buy yours. Now people have their choice out of 1000's pictures of leafs so you cannot possibly make that type of money with a picture like this. But when you're first to the market with a new product you can make money.
just found your channel, this is literally the 2nd vid I watch on your channel and your friendship is so heartwarming and genuine. you both seem like down to earth, nice guys. very cool
Thumbs up for not cleaning the grout :)

You should make a video recreating old photos with your skills now
Now that's a great idea!!
I second this. I've seen a few of Peter's videos but, I just subscribed and was inspired by THIS video. Do it for me!

This is one of my most favorite vids from you. Thank you Peter!
That was so refreshing, i loved that video, what a great friendship you two have, it's beautiful!
Is it just me, or are ALL (okay, most) of these photos absolutely stunning?! You've come a long way!
There actually pretty good, he’s just flexing his knowledge of photography, lol.
"Everyone starts from some point to reach where they are now."
Wow!
WTF Pete, I WANT to be this BAD as you were.

Peter: "Who takes pictures like these?!?"
Me: I do!! 😭😭😭😭😭
😂
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Two years later this advice and this video still hits me. Thank you!
Its funny, im 14, i love cardistry, skateboarding, and photography. I really hope i turn out like this mastermind someday
You have already - just figure out how you made it happen, & do those things.
it would be cool that you remake this photos and make them cool photos !
Bobby went from "Hello sir, would it be alright if I dated your daughter?" to "I'll have her back whenever I'm done with her.."
i am ded
:)))
Lol!! So true!
Or to "She calls me daddy now" lol
Lmao! This comment had me in tears!
Is no one going to mention his card skills at the end???
Card skills on another level... Didn't know his also good at it
you should do a video just on stock photography!
kels xx
This week everyone is out to photograph leaves :D
Stock Photography is dead bro
Its all about video now
You know, I learn Stage Lighting before because I was in Theatrical performance as Lighting Design before and when i got into Photography, That help a lot.
Sometimes People underestimated the power of Lighting, i say don't
photography is basically light so do your homework
Peter is great to watch your videos and I loved hearing you tell people that it's all about learning light control. Amen to that. I've been a pro snapper for over 35 years and still love to hear great content and enthusiasm for photography. You inspired me to start my own channel this week, thank you. keep the vids coming
Your bad photos are my good ones. LOLL. I feel like you're AmateurShaming me.
Yan Thériault I think u kinda missed the point
No... I kinda making a joke. In the way that, his early skills are way better than my 20 years of photo and videography.
That is kinda sad, if it's true
LOLLL. Awfully sad.
Ah the dumpster photo. I think every beginning photographer takes that shot 😂 myself included.
Same. It repesents all my work.
@Nathan Jimenez The sunset shot.
I have one myself too 😆
Pile of leaves. Classic!
A visual representation of what the photographer feels about their work? Trash. Hahaha....
Stock photo, 20 000$, Please Peter tell us more about that and is that possible now, can u make video about it??
SzT SzTechnology i can't imagine how he could earn this with only one photo like this.
P C agree
Notice how he said Stock Photography wasn't booming yet back then. When you're the only guy who has a picture of autumn leafs online, everyone who wants autumn leafs has to buy yours. Now people have their choice out of 1000's pictures of leafs so you cannot possibly make that type of money with a picture like this. But when you're first to the market with a new product you can make money.
over the course of time ...he said
that is insane lol
just found your channel, this is literally the 2nd vid I watch on your channel and your friendship is so heartwarming and genuine. you both seem like down to earth, nice guys. very cool
