    That end photo of Ernie was splendid. Well I was sweating with, Paul in that tunnel, you both did well Paul guiding the boat and Liz's encouragement what is needed! I know what Paul means about walking, you can walk yourself into a fitness for it and it becomes easier!

      Thank you Nigel, yes walking does get easier the more you do it and Ernie always has us doing it 🤣 Paul did well in the tunnel didn't he, his little face though when I went out the back to check on him 🫣😊

    I'm not even half way in and I'm mesmerized by the tunnel, the brilliant narration of the rules, and Paul's perfectly understandable anxiety over the trek. I'd say I love the show were it not for the fact that I'm of Scottish decent, and have only told my dear wife of 50 years that I love her a dozen times. Let's settle for I admire your show.

      Thank you so much, Paul was so nervous but although the tunnel is long and low at least it was straight so I think that helped Paul get some confidence. 😊

    Our trip through The Harecastle Tunnel was a disaster. We were told to slow down but weren’t going fast to start with. We were last in line out of 5 and the others disappeared from view. We had a lot of damage to our boat and think if we’d been going a little faster, the momentum would have kept us in the middle when the Tunnel got so low! You did brilliantly navigating through.

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  4 дні тому

      Oh no, sorry to hear that you had something a bad time..5 boat convoy, that must have been really foggy with fumes in there, we noticed it just with 2 boats..the deeper we got in the more the viability disappeared through smoke/ exhaust. Trouble is once you are eon the side in a tunnel like that its almost impossible to get your boat off of the side and like you said if you were going a little faster it may have helped steer. 😊

    Happy belated birthday, Liz! Another great vlog, you three!
    Paul ya did a STELLAR job!!!
    You guys need the Shadowhawk flashlight for future tunnels! Or, maybe whenever you do Scarecastle again!
    And, for the record, I think what Paul was talking about is his comprehension of how his endurance has improved since living on a narrowboat and walking everywhere more! I do get it! Keep’em coming, guys! Ernie: you looked RIDICULOUSLY adorable in your sweater and hood!

    Ahh, i felt for Paul there, that tunnel is nasty, you would not get me to go through that no way! Hope you guys have a camera at the front so Paul can actually see where he’s going. The lake was lovely and a bit of a breather i guess. We’ll have to wait n see whether you stopped at the potteries or not but a very Happy Birthday, Liz! ♥️🥂🎂💎🦮♥️

      Hi Eric, thanks for the birthday wishes. Glad we got the tunnel out the way, Paul did very well getting us safely through. We didn't stop at the Potteries unfortunately..we moved on past as mooring wasn't good there and in all honesty we take Ernie with us as we don't leave him alone on boat so he had already threatened to cause a substantial amount of damage with his tail wags against the china cups 🤣😊

    i know how your feeling I've done this tunnel while in a holiday narrowboat, and yes its long and scary Paul you are doing very well, you deserve that cup of tea enjoy. I love the old english dinner set, I went to the english willow and I have everything Churchill have made I reckon right here in my litchen in Australia, some I have to hand carry in my luggage so that it wouldn't get broken, Oh the Calden Canal is actually very pretty, thank you...if you see the churchill place where they make their stuff, can you just pop in there and grab me a round teapot, I've broken my lid..........................hehe..... only joking...... but did break my lid...... stay safe guys until next week, love you Ernie and thanks for the Vvlogs.

    Liz, Paul and Captain Ernie
    Liz the Australian term for a metal container used for boiling water, making tea in or cooking over a fire is a "billy". The little wooden shack at the end of a path and has a crescent moon or sun cut in the door is called a "biffy". How these terms came to be I do not know but maybe uncle Google can help.
    Paul stepping out of ones comfort zone is nearly always a challenge unless one enjoys going out of their comfort zone. Well done on navigating through Harecastle tunnel. As for walking the lake I know exactly what you were saying about the distance thing. My partner would say the same as Liz did when we used to go for lengthy walks.
    Captain Ernie, it was obvious that your self respect and pride were shattered when you were forced to wear that brown sweater thing. Imagine how chilled you would have been if you continued to wear your wet coat. We can't have the star of the show getting sick. Swallow your pride and be sensible like Paul and Liz.
    Mark
    Alberta, Canada

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  6 днів тому

      Hi Mark, well after he read your comment Ernie's learnt a few things....he now has a new coat on order for the days that his other one is still wet, not sure how he managed to get us to buy another one but I think it was something to do with 'The show can't go on without him' comment that he threw in to the mix 🤣😊
      If you type bivvy cooking into Google a silver cooking pan comes up in images and that's the type I had in my mind, but I've no idea where I got the term from then if bivvy is a fisherman's tent 🫣
      Paul did really well in the tunnel and hopefully that's built his tunnel confidence back up, especially as we have to do the horrible one that we had an accident in, early next year. Hope you're well and keeping warm 😊

    I was surprised my Dad wasn't in the slightest bit phased going through. We had been stuck at a stoppage for 2 days and rocked up with no notice. Thankfully the guy let us through. We were last and he shut the doors behind us. Massive BOOM when they slam shut lol. 😐 Not sure if they do that every time but it was eery being in alone. Im gonna steer next time! Did you both see the skeleton drawing? The coolness is lush in the Summer in there but it must be freezing in the Winter! Hope Paul's confidence is better afterwards and happy belated birthday Liz. Can't remember if I said last week but that artwork was stunning the other week. 👌

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  5 днів тому +1

      In winter months they don't allow you to turn up without booking as they do in the summer. The door get shut behind as the extractor fans need to operate with them closed, they time roughly your exit and open the door to exit as you approach. Not sure if you noticed in the video but they took quite a while to open the exit doors when we came through, that was a brief moment of panic 🤣 We both missed the skeleton on the wall 🫣

    You were lucky starting from the north end of the tunnel as you were nervous if you start from the south end that is where the fans are when you go in they close the doors behind you then turn on the really noisy fans this causes a very cold mist to engulf the whole boat making it impossible to see for a few seconds but if you are nervous it be frightening.I have used that tunnel dozens of times but one time I followed a livaboard through and he literally bounced from one wall to the other the whole way through when we got out the otherside I asked if it was his first trip through he told me he was a regular through it but had never got the hang of doing it I had good laugh so the shows how well you have done

      Oh wow, it's hard to get off the wall once you're running alongside it in a tunnel isn't it, you tend to bounce off and back on again. So glad we managed to remain central in this one unlike our trip through Braunston 🙈😊

    *Morena Captain 'ET' Ernie, Liz & Paul 🙂 Paul apparently, all that walking is good exercise & you will be so much fitter. Yep the lake looked really lovely and a nice place to walk around too.🙂Wow Harecastle tunnel, was really interesting & Paul did really well. Liz you did great with all the info along the way and great filming too 🙂 Awww Captain 'ET" Ernie (with the hood up on his head) looking ever so cute as usual 🙂 Every time you went thru the tunnel or under bridges etc I always say 'DUCK', so I do hope you can hear me yelling that out as I would hate for you two to hit ya heads lol 🙂Ya'll have a awesome safe and warm week 🙂nz*

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  6 днів тому +1

      Bless you Andrea, I will sure hear your 'duck' bellowings from now on when approaching bridges 🤣 The tunnel, although it wasn't enjoyed, was actually quite an alright one as it was straight so although concentration was needed it went well and hopefully that will help with Paul's tunnel confidence. It's going to be needed as after Xmas we will be having to travel back through the one we had the incident in 🫣

    • @andreacrashe9894
      @andreacrashe9894 6 днів тому

      @@uponreflection *Liz (I'm just thinking out loud) maybe you could, also take the tiller sometimes, when going thru the longer straight tunnels... to also boost up your confidence too, whilst steering the boat too. 🙂 Cos as we all know, that the more times that you do it, then the better you become at doing it.🙂 Paul will be fine at the one after xmas... just tell him to breath in deeply and then let the breath out slowly and repeat a few times. Then go for it thru that particular tunnel. Then it will be a piece of p^ss for him... easy peasy🙂.*

    I would definitely have to have spot lights on the front so I could see what was coming up or did the camera not pick that up ? great vlog

    • @uponreflection
      @uponreflection  5 днів тому

      Yes you have to have a headlamp up front and onto of that we have a workman's light on the back deck, a head torch, and two other torches shinning up the walls on either side. The trouble is the tunnel gets filled with smoke from the engine so it actually gets harder and harder to see clearly as you go in further. There are extractor fans but they don't clear all the fog away 😕
