If you want to treat Alicja to a good ferry trip try the Norwegian coastal route, Bergen to Kirkenes and back. You can just do the northern or southern section to save money. If you do the full route it's 11 nights with full board, 3 meals a day. In winter you have the possibility of the Northern lights and in summer the midnight sun. Most stops are very short but there is normally one per day when you can get off of the ship and explore. The Havilla ships look to be the best as they are more modern and have larger cabins, I am contemplating doing this early next summer. The one drawback is that you are definitely suffering from Aberdonian Syndrome, short arms and deep pockets.

Honestly, after watching this, I go abroad a lot, and there isn't a chance in hell that I would ever go on that crappy ferry or use that company at all. Disgusting. Thank you to you both. Lee
Welcome to the party ferry Italian style. Menefrego! Literally sums up employees and party goers attitudes alike. This is the aspect that most people don't experience while travelling other countries. Look up the word in Italian. Sorry you had to see it in the raw. We, living here see it everyday! Hope you have a great time in Barcellona! Thanks for sharing!
Man I totally get it. You can’t be positive 100% of the time. And when you are responsible for somebody else’s good time it can turn up the stress. But she had such a good attitude and you guys go so well together. Love how when you called yourself a Name and she just glossed right over it like “meh, everybody has a bad day”.
A totally classic example of when something so bad it becomes good. I will be surprised if Alicja lets you take her to your front garden in the future video. From one Mr Gumpy to another well done for keeping the side up.
The younger people on board probably thought it was great. The fact that you had Alicja with you meant you could make the best of it, and that's what you have to do. She's a ray of sunshine and a counter to your dour outlook (OK, I was born in Scotland too). When our Eurostar train broke down between Brussels and Amsterdam a couple of years ago, we also made the best of it, adding our own dialog to what the response crew were saying to each other outside, and that's what made it into a fun experience. Whenever you said Grimaldi, I kept thinking of the Griswalds for some reason. It had that National Lampoons feel to it.
We did the same trip in the other direction on a sister ship -- from the 1970's. No en suite facilities, everything rusted up, really daggy showers. You were lucky.
My two hungry puppies must be fed and then my usual Saturday morning coffee with Steve and (as someone recently called in the comments) the best UA-cam sidekick, Alicja. Thanks guys 👍🏼🇮🇪
OMG . Poor you , I can feel your frustration when you wanted a nice trip with Alicja . That is my idea of living hell . The lasagne meal was a joke for the price . Made for an interesting watch and had me chuckling . Safe travels
That customer service is typical for Italy unfortunately. No one takes responsibility, when you got a complaint they just shrug. They don't care because there are always so many more tourists coming, it doesn't matter if you are satisfied or not. Nowhere else I met staff so arrogant and unfriendly like in Italian beach resorts and ferries. I live very near to Italy but I stopped going there for vacation years ago.
@@steve-marsh I spend a lot of time in Crete and in the recent years the number of Italians going there has grown quite a lot. Because it's not like they only treat foreigners like that, they do it with each other just as well. One family from Bari I spoke with last year was astonished how relaxed and friendly vacation there was compared to their own country, especially in the south of the island. It was their first trip abroad but they didn't sound like it would be their last.
The Italians that migrated to Australia post-WW2 were top quality, hard-working people who got involved in the fishing industry, labored on farms and taught many Aussies about limestone foundations, concrete additions, tiling and glass-working for the thousands of houses being built at that time. They also introduced their cuisine and happy attitude to life. The ones that stayed behind . . . apparently went into the hospitality and tourism industry back home 😊
What an utter shambles, thank you for doing this so I will never have to, at least you had each other for company and to help you retain your sanity I can't find a single redeeming feature of that unkempt boat. Stay safe and well and till next time cheers from Oz and better luck on the next ferry.
Hi Steve, thanks for the excellent video. As a subscriber over the last two years I find your videos enjoyable, entertaining, and informative, especially when Alicja is with you. Your presentation is always honest and down to earth. Looking forward to the next one, thank you, regards Barry.
I needed some laughs and this video did not let me down. Every minute it got progressively worse. “Is it a party cruise tonight?” “Yes”. Cue lights flashing on ship and loud music.
Went on a trip with Grimaldi once during spring and my wife and I found those dog cages. It was very hot in there, so they put a blower in the door opening wich was very loud. All the dogs where so scared and sad. We stayed all night to calm those dogs and refresh the water. Didn't see a crew member once. I have a picture of my wife sleeping on the floor there. So sad...
Grimouldy, poo(l) deck, rude staff yelling 'checkout!' : welcome to Italy! And that's why, as an italian, I mostly like to travel north. Still I laughed so hard while watching because, hey, we are used to all this and barely notice (unless seeing it all through someone else's eyes). Thank you Steve for sharing another great video ❤
What a disaster! I hope you get your money back. You two are so Positive and funny. You took a complete fail and turned it into a funny experience for us. Thanks for taking one for the team!!
25:26 Steve "I promise I'm going to take you on, like, a proper cruise" Oh dear... you know what Alicja really needs is one of those nice crossings on a Northlink cargo ship: no all-night partying there and the breakfast room looked lovely :-)
Oh boy! I'm only a few minutes in, and as an introvert with chronic social anxiety, this is my nightmare. I want to turn around and run away - and I'm not even there with you! 😂 #Grimoudly 🤢
Oh no, I feel so sorry for you guys! Being "trapped" on a ferry with such people is a nightmare... This makes me appreciate the Silja and Viking Line ferries in the Baltic Sea, they usually point out that weekend cruises may be less quiet due to partying students, which is fair enough to me. And at least they did not party-theme the entire ship for that, it's just a regular crossing nonetheless xD
How disgusting on so many levels! Honestly it was hard to watch. Thank you for the tour! I'm guessing they don't get inspected by a health department or something similar. You both deserve a better cruise. At least you slept well although it looks like the kind of place you might want to sleep in your clothes.
Steve, holy sh!t man, you have the patience and acceptance of a saint. 12 minutes in and I feel like I want to complain and lawyer up for you - right now. You even said thank you at one point, which caused me to shout at the TV 😂 Much love, mate. Lee
I tried the website, as I was interested in taking the ferry this Spring from Barcelona to Rome. You’re right, IT’S AWFUL! Looks like I’m flying…CHEERS!!!🍻
OMG Steve!! That room gives me the Boak! That would've been nice about 30 years ago, bet it hasn't had a deep clean in 30 years!! And Jeezo!! What is the deal with that food? I don't think i would even eat that if I was starving. Still that's definitely a great video. lol.
Steve is the most positive and fair guy on UA-cam. He is just being objective about that ferry - he is telling it as it is. He is still managing to make the best of it with Alicija... no more Italian ferries for the dynamic duo
My god you both deserve a medal! What an absolute nightmare! Such rude staff and terrible food and service! I hope Grimaldi have you a refund.. I’m stressed just watching the video 😂
I think they should have at least told you it was a party then you could have decided what to do. Take Alicija on a proper cruise. You both deserve it. I watch all your videos you are my favourite UA-camrs. Keep up the good work. THANK YOU
From the start of this video I immediately thought I would never travel on this ship, thank you for this tip and I really felt sorry for you. I was in Italy a long time ago and I think it is a beautiful country, but I have not experienced the Italians as friendly, which is probably part of their culture. Thank you for this video and hope the rest of the trip was better.
I never ever thought I'd see a grumpy Steve 😊 but I understand why. You were hoping for a nice ferry experience for Alicja so she could do more with you. At least she seemed to take it all with good humour, so hopefully there will be more ferry trips together
Next trip is the Friday night overnight ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm. It isn't as loud as this ferry or diorganised but there are a LOT of very drunk Finns and Swedes drinking the duty-free alcohol. Crikey, it's like Pontins on the sea! Yep, that's my worst nightmare. You go on Cruises to relax and take it all in but there's no way you'd be able to do that with Grimaldi! Very poor of them not letting you know that it was essentially a Rave Cruise.
I appreciate you posting this so I know to NEVER use this company for travel. Disgusting environment & terrible people. Thank you for this great warning! Ps. You both are lovely!
Great to spend fun time with you chaps! Southern Europe has a strange tendency to ignore facts like the wet and cold of winter. Hurrah for Scandiwegian ferries with their non-slip decks! But it takes all sorts...
Another ferry crossing on the banned list! And I'm glad that Steve's notes have been reinstated . My list of banned ferry crossings/companies so far 1)Irish Ferries 2)P&O 3)This one
One of your last videos when you was aboard a vehicle ferry, with basic amenities, basic accommodation and basic everything... you seemed to enjoy that experience so much more than this crappy ferry. In fact, I think that one was one of my personal favorites of mine! Lee
You poor, poor things... I'm SO suffering with you. What a nightmare. Lucky you having sunshine-Alicja! It's an experience you will be laughing about, when the "trauma" is fixed. 😅❤
I could have tolerated the crowds of drunks as we all have different needs and want different experiences, but I would have done it by staying in the cabin. What I couldn’t have tolerated was the standard of cleanliness (or lack of). That was my absolute nightmare and given those standards I probably wouldn’t have got INTO the bed!! In my personal experience Italians come across as rude but it’s not meant that way it’s just the way they converse. Having said that I certainly got the impression that the staff didn’t like their jobs 😂 and didn’t care one way or another. Thanks for entertainment both
😂 Best bits-- bread roll dipp-😮 ! Steve in window recess ,and poor Alijca who was starving when u joined the massive Q for grub. Nevermind ( great for us to watch) brilliant vocalist / song to end at Barcelona. 🎉 Thank you.
lol Steve my lad! you`re sounding like Cpl Frazer in Dad`s Army in this video," we`re all doomed"! ,,perhaps the name, party ship maybe a clue.. but the state of that bathroom ,hell, now we know why it`s called, GRIMaldi.. but the positive, you brought the lovely Alicja, whom i bet is a party animal..this Steve is one of your best ferry reviews ,loved it...Titanic on a budget lol great call Alicja... so bad even the dogs have abandoned ship.. That`s it,must go on the ship in 2025
Watching the two of you flirt reaffirms a little bit of my faith in the rest of humanity. I have to say I’m thrilled the notes are back, our little girl loves the smilies on them. ‘The man that does the smilies.’ I hope Grimaldi see this video. It is telling them the future of their company. Not good.
OMG... I'm to old for that, similar age as you Steve, i had taken the loss and run in the other direction from that ship, then booked another way to Barcelona!!!
hmm bit unlucky but it was good to see your "grumpy old man " impression, very convincing!😃Grimaldi certainly won't experience a rush in sale based on your experience and I am a bit apprehensive about my own trip but we 'll give it a go
Once aboard and cast off, if you go to the Pursers Desk you can find out if you can move to a quieter cabin. I used to pay a little more to upgrade as it is down to the Purser.
Wow do the staff clean that ship deffo 2nd hand anxiety wow I will continue to watch to support Steve marsh I'm with you guys I would be grumpy as well
Very sorry to see you apparently got the crossing from hell. I was on this ferry going the other way on my month long road trip from my home in Norway with my Lincoln Town Car in the autumn of 2021, and I actually quite enjoyed it. There weren't too many people on board, the weather was great, and I got to sail between Sardinia and Corsica during the day, and it was a pretty spectacular sight. I also stayed in one of the Owner's Suites - mine only had one room plus the bath, though, but they still called it an Owner's Suite - and although it was a bit dated and worn, it was certainly a lot cleaner than yours. I had brought my own food on board, so didn't try any of the restaurants, but as for the rest, I'll have to say I had a much better experience than you, thankfully.
When I was there 20 years ago I went on a boat on the Tiber. It was a dinner, dance river cruise. The ship belched black smoke and shook perilously. The Italians had a great time and did not seem at all concerned for their safety. The food was ok, the ship not so much. The food everywhere in Rome was fabulous . That was 20 years ago.
You two need an award or something. As that bathroom.. certainly lived up to the grim title didn't it. I appreciate its a big ferry so has lots of rooms to clean, but that was awful. Especially for the price paid.
Steve… my very first action would've been to show your 'filthy room' video to the most senior person I could find. I would've also mentioned the number of UA-cam views your channel attracts! At the very least (if the ship was fully-booked) - I would've insisted that a team of cleaners was sent to make the room habitable. You really should still send a formal complaint to the Very Grim & Mouldy Ferry Company to demand a full refund. What a shambles. If their safety standards are as good as their maintenance & cleaning standards, you did well to make it to Barcelona!
You promised and you delivered, well..Grimaldi 'delivered'. Butlins at sea on an 18-30's weekend. I cannot imagine anything worse. Full marks to Alicja for being so positive, and funny too. Steve, you do grumpy brilliantly. It's like looking in a mirror. As for getting turfed out of the cabin like that ... just like most things on the ship, it was out of order.
I love how Alicja passed a young man and he said Ciao Amore. I know he said it into a phone but the timing was interesting. Alicja has a fan already but Steve is right there so no worries.
Oofff, she's a trooper for having that positive an outlook after beng confronted with that line of people. I'd cancel and get the next one for sure if plans permitted.
It’s amazing no matter how bad things are Alicja always remains positive and happy . This is why you 2 are so popular on UA-cam. 😘

Would've been even better if she actually said it in Italian too 😅
Alicja's hybrid Polish/Scottish accent is adorable.
If you want to treat Alicja to a good ferry trip try the Norwegian coastal route, Bergen to Kirkenes and back. You can just do the northern or southern section to save money. My list of banned ferry crossings/companies so far
1)Irish Ferries
2)P&O
3)This one
Cabins very spacious larger than some suites on cruise ships but rather dingy. Silk purse from a sows ear comes to mind!!
Great vlog Steve. You should have named the vlog ‘fawlty towers Of The Sea.’
😂🎉❤ You guys are very entertaining. Glad you had your gal with you to get you thru. She's awesome!! 😊 You both together are awesome!! Thanks.
One of your last videos when you was aboard a vehicle ferry, with basic amenities, basic accommodation and basic everything... you seemed to enjoy that experience so much more than this crappy ferry. In fact, I think that one was one of my personal favorites of mine! Lee
Cheers Lee!
You poor, poor things... I'm SO suffering with you. What a nightmare. Lucky you having sunshine-Alicja! It's an experience you will be laughing about, when the "trauma" is fixed. 😅❤
My takeaway is don't go on an Italian ferry.
Great video, You've been on some great ferries. Sad this wasn't what you were hoping for
I could have tolerated the crowds of drunks as we all have different needs and want different experiences, but I would have done it by staying in the cabin. Thanks for entertainment both
Thank you for suffering through that so none of us watching will ever have to 😂 and for you and Alicja managing to turn it into a comedy scenario
I can't say I'm envious of that boat trip. It's a shame that they not informed you. Nice to see Alicja not was too disappointed tho😊😊
The MV Pubic lines!! Congrats to you both getting through it!
‘The man that does the smilies.’
I hope Grimaldi see this video. It is telling them the future of their company. Not good.
Awwww thank you so much :) :) :) :)
OMG... I'm to old for that, similar age as you Steve, i had taken the loss and run in the other direction from that ship, then booked another way to Barcelona!!!
Bit tricky if you're in middle of sea!!
hmm bit unlucky but it was good to see your "grumpy old man " impression, very convincing!😃Grimaldi certainly won't experience a rush in sale based on your experience and I am a bit apprehensive about my own trip but we 'll give it a go
I think it'll be so much better without the party element!
LOVED Alicja's Swiftie bag❤! You both are troopers. The conditions were pretty gross, especially the dog poop part🤢.
It looks as if you've arrived on the Italian equivalent of Spring Break.
Not often I get stressed out by a video - but NIGHTMARE
I'm still shocked at how incredibly filthy this ship must be and I'm very glad I saw this video before I ever thought about making this trip myself.
Hi Steve, the name says it all "Grimaldi " GRIM.😆
Once aboard and cast off, if you go to the Pursers Desk you can find out if you can move to a quieter cabin. I used to pay a little more to upgrade as it is down to the Purser.
The cabin was probably the best on board (had it been clean)
Wow do the staff clean that ship deffo 2nd hand anxiety wow I will continue to watch to support Steve marsh I'm with you guys I would be grumpy as well
Love watching you both and am really looking forward to your next couple ferry trip.. something a bit more romantic eh ! 😊
I would’ve canceled and booked another day 😂😳😬🙄
The pleasure of traveling with Grimaldi ferries. 😮
fun adventure❤🎉😮😊😊😊😊 Thanks
I need to try it!
Alicja got me through that 21 hours! :)
