Quarry had tremendous heart, and power in both hands, but was a relatively stationary fighter. It was unfortunate that he never utilized good head movement, and was so susceptible to cuts.
I love watching these old fights from the golden era of heavyweight boxing! Styles made a big difference. Norton dominated Quarry in this fight. Quarry knocked out Earnie Shavers in one round. And Shavers did the same to Norton!
Jerry Quarry had a lot of heart in the ring but unfortunately he paid dearly for it later in life/ Norton faired a little better I believe as most of his knockout losses came relatively quickly- but in the '70's he was a force to be reckoned with as in the first Ali bout !!!
One thing I am surprised about is Norton chose to slug with Quarry. In other fights when Ken fought a slugger and tried to slug back instead of stick and move he was beaten up. Examples are Tex Cobb, Cooney, Shavers and Foreman. When he boxed only Larry Holmes could beat him as I have him beating Ali 3 times.
You can hear the punches. I cringed and flinched at all of those punches, especially Norton's punches to Jerry's face. My goodness, his face took a beating. I've watched Quarry vs Frazier II, Quarry is a very tough boxer, but in both this fight and Frazier II, either he or his cornered should've stopped the fight before the ref. The health of the boxer needs to come first. This is the first Ken Norton fight that I'm seeing. I want to watch more, and it's nice to see the crossguard in action too. Norton showed quite the durability too.
America dominated in the 70's, but those days are over, the rest of the world caught up. There are fewer American champions today and that's why people in America always look to the 70's and 80's as the best.
@@vestibulate Me too. I didn't much care for him when I was a kid...but as I aged, I came to understand Life a little better and could see what Howard brought to the table.
Quarry said he'd have beaten marciano!!! It's amazing to me how everyone including the very fighters who fought rocky said this right up until they were counted out in a fetal position hanging on the ropes like dried laundry etc.. the bonified all time great j.walcott said rocky can hit yea, but he's way to easy to hit, and too amateurish! If he beats me ill retire!!! 😮😮 well we know he broke that promise- archie moore was convinced he'd win, but he couldn't stop dropping like a crash dummy - it amases me people just won't ever accept rockys special achievement in this sport, 49-0 with 43 knockouts!?!? Means nothing not even benefit of the doubt. And now quarry ... ?? W.t.f. did he think he was going to do, after going to war with rocky after - say 6- 8 rounds which I'll give quarry, I don't underestimate him, but round 9, 10, 11, 12, etc .... is this sausage head kidding me, I liken him to the great rex layne- yes he fought rocky well.. at least for a while, and anyone who knows old school boxing knows how that ended up 😮😮😮 straight to the dentist, after a 10 min nap😮😢😮😢..
Not the refereeing. Quarry should have been saved from his own bravery at least two rounds earlier. Even his own corner were culpable in letting him go out round after round. That's just a horrible beating up, and knowing how JQ ended up makes this a gruesome watch.
Obviously the ref and the announcers disagreed, as do I. Quarry was cut over his eye, his vision was impaired, and he was repeatedly taking hard shots to the head without any meaningful punches in return.. There was no need for him to continue and take more punishment.
@PhilipVaughn-ri8vb Yeah. They should have let it continue. Quarry had Norton right where he wanted him. Another five or six rounds, Norton would have collapsed from hitting him. (apologies to Jake LaMotta)
@@PhilipVaughn-ri8vb I'm sure the Quarry family- what's left of them- appreciate your support. It's beatings like this that rendered Jerry and Mike unable to care for themselves. But there's always some jerk who opines, "They stopped it too soon."
The heavyweight division in the 70's was just loaded!
I agree the 70s was great era with top great boxers nothing like it
The 1970s heavyweight boxers had real boxing skills and heart... which is sorely lacking today!
Sir, I dont know why I dont enjoy watching fights of the current era at all. I still watch fights from 60s to 80s.
Good ol boxing , those were the days .
Quarry had tremendous heart, and power in both hands, but was a relatively stationary fighter. It was unfortunate that he never utilized good head movement, and was so susceptible to cuts.
Yeah that’s Rocky Marciano with the leg movement that is so desirable.
If you are a stationary fighter you probably will succumb to facial cuts.
The only head movement Quarry had was when his head was wobbled by Norton's punches - too brave for his own good.
I love watching these old fights from the golden era of heavyweight boxing! Styles made a big difference. Norton dominated Quarry in this fight. Quarry knocked out Earnie Shavers in one round. And Shavers did the same to Norton!
Quarry always smaller than his rivals. Absorbed horrific damage over the yrs. Huge heart. Tragic ending
Norton took *everything* Quarry (a very tough HW contender) had to dish and stopped him - not an easy task. Big ups to Ken Norton Sr.
Quarry was retired prior to this fight and was only given a few weeks to train.
Jerry Quarry came along at the wrong time….Frazier, Norton, Ali…..sorry Jerry.
If he came around just before Sonny Liston, in the Floyd Patterson, Ingemar Johansson era... could've been champ.
Understandable and sad why Jerry Quarry died young.
Even the journeyman were dangerous.
Jerry was slowing Kens punches with his face. This was very one sided.😮
Boy Jerry was tough!😮
Tem que respeitar muito esses excelentes gladiadores, como aguentam tantas invertidas, os anos 70 foram um primor do boxe peso pesados.
You look at fights like this and it’s no surprise the Jerry ended up.
Incredibly brave but took way too much there.

Jerry Quarry was pure heart. Damn shame how he ended :(
Norton was too big, too strong, too fast, and too skilled for Quarry. This was Norton at his best. Quarry looked subpar from the start.
He was retired prior to this fight. Only given a few weeks to train.
Quarry stopped Shavers and beat Lyle and Foster. He just was not ready for this one.
Jerry could beat any heavyweights today without a doubt he had a big Heart
Ridiculous comment Quarry was way too small to deal with a heavyweight of today.
Ali said Jerry Corey was the toughest boxer that fought at the wrong time

" Norton's makes " quarrys face look. " like smashed advocado ! " Ahh laugh 😃 😀 😄 😁 🤣 Ahh ahhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh 😃
This was a good one.
Quarry : " ahhhhh. Ah. Ahhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh " oh shit 😳 😃 😀 😄 😁 🤣
What a chin Quarry had, but he paid dearly for it later in life🤥
Did Quarry actually make the statement that he would've beaten Marciano?
Good referee..!😉👏👏👏
Today. Boxer. Not. Touch. These guys. So tuff. 😊

Quarry had no head movement
Oh yes he did. It just wasn't generated by him. 😆
No kidding.
Jerry had heavy hands. but he blocked too many punches with his head, Only mexicans can do that.
Quarry would surprise me or let me down, I learned to not bet on him to win or lose.
Target practice for Norton in round 4
These guys were made different.
These. Boxers. WS. Quality. To day. No.
Quarry did just enough, in spurts, to extend the beating he was taking. I do NOT miss Howard Cosell.
I miss Cosell. I really do.

Was there a Light Heavy Weight class those days? Quarry 205!
Nunca se dio la pelea de Quarry ante Oscar Bonavena.
Ali and Norton made Quarry look like nothing
This is what you call fighter these boxers of to day won't last 2 rounds maximum .

Quarry was just a punchbag. Poorest defence I've ever seen in a boxing ring. Norton was hitting him at will.
