Richard Smith is clearly one of the world's greatest living guitar players. The level of artistry this guy demonstrates is simply stunning. His stuff is both mind blow blowing and musical at the same time. If the world was fair, this guy would be a big star.
I can't believe I didn't know about this Richard Smith guy. Now I'm watching a lot of videos of him. Incredibly talented, one of the greatest living guitarists imo.
Great player and nice man. My wife and I saw him this month, in Sacramento and he was fantastic. Has to be one of the best musicians that ever picked up a guitar.
I've known and enjoyed Richard Smith as a player for years but in this interview, I got to know who Richard Smith is as a person. Thatnks for that, Nroman! It's always nice to find out that one of your heroes is an actually good soul. Self effacing, humble and kind soul, I'm now even more impressed with Richard.
Incredible. His left hand is like a high speed precision vice - no smearing on the strings whatsoever. Edit: AND he loves the West - went through AZ, NEV, UT, COL und NM, meaning Zion, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Sedona und Grand Canyon in Sept. myself. There is nothing better than deserts and mesas. Richard Smith is the man - greetz from Germany.
Richard's an astounding player and a gracious fellow. I used to go see his gigs when he visited his in-laws in their hometown, and would sit a few feet from him, almost tearing up to be able to soak up his playing. He brought his Hot Club buddies a couple of times - just fantastic. One day in heaven I'll have the time to develop similar skills : ) Thanks for those guitar memories Richard!
I really enjoyed this. I know nothing about guitars, but whenever I listen to guy, I'm stuck by how clean his sound is compared to other guitarists. It's nice to hear him talk about definition, and he clearly thinks about it in a lot in his playing. I enjoyed understanding where that sound I think of as 'clean' comes from.
Lyrical, phrasing, and mixing up the chords along with melody lines a fantastical mastery moment that makes my afternoon. Another homerun at Norman's with Richard Smith.
I saw him with Tommy Emmanuel Years ago when they toured Germany. They are so funny together. Great guitarists both, and together a wonderful experience. Love to see him again.
Wow loved this session .Richard is a sublime musician and the banter back and forth was wonderful. Norm you look the best iv ever seen you . I'm a new fan of Richard and I'm going to seek his work and music out. Thank you again Norm
He’s right about not recommending thumbpicks for flat picking. I tried to flat pick for many years with a thumb pick and I’m still trying. The day I decided to use a flat pick I realized what I was doing wrong. I never wanted to use flatpicks, I could never keep a grip on one, always preferred thumbpicks, came from a fingerpicking comfort zone from dobro playing.
My wife and I saw Richard Smith in Springfield, MO in October 2021 playing with Tommy. We went to our favorite sandwhich shop in Springfield and were walking back to our car when we saw Richard out on the sidewalk by the theater. I told him we enjoyed the show and shook his hand. He wanted to know if there was a good place to eat that was still open nearby. We told him about our sandwich shop. After we got to the car, we drove by the restaurant to make sure I hadn't given him messed up directions and he was there. We could see him in line through the window. In any case, he's a very cool, down to earth kind of guy.
Thanks Norm for having another amazing player in your shop. Its wonderful that you take the time to video some of the world's best guitar players like Richard and post it for the world to enjoy. Would have been fun to have scene Richard and Joe DiBlasi play a song. Maybe next time.
With all the turmoil, divisive rhetoric and negativity in the world, I turn to Norm's Rare Guitars channel for a reminder of the goodness in the world. Every clip makes my day more positive. Thanks everyone at Norm's!
Since I heard Richard Smith the first time I`ve been a huge fan of his . He is so impressive in his playing and he loves to play solo as well as with other big names . 😃💚
The first time I ever saw Richard was at the Chet festival in Nashville many, many years ago. He astounded me with his ability to go from Chet to Django and back In the same song!! His brothers Rob and Sam were with him that trip as were his parents. His father actually hand made a G6120 replica for Richard. Regarding Lenny.....another truly gifted musician. I had no idea how messed up on drugs he was until I began reading his biography. Terrible loss.
There are many reasons why being English can feel a burden sometimes but seeing Richard really makes me proud to be from England - not just for his talent but he's a total English gentleman and extremely humble and kind. Thank you, Richard and ps I agree the red rocks fascinate me too!!
Over the years, I have seen Richard play virtually all of his shows at Lord of the Strings Concerts in the OC, including some of the tours with wife Julie Adams on cello. He's amazing- and so's Julie.
Very good, you guys 🙂 Enjoyed listening. Richard plays beautifully, love the jazz chords and arrangements. Nice to see Norm's hanging in there. Hope you all have a good holiday season. Thanks for sharing.
Love that song Poka Dots and moonbeams since hearing Sinatra with Dirsey playing it about 50yrs ago. Richard is a fine player. There's a you tube video of him as a kid invited to play with Chet on stagevon the UK.
As someone who does listen to shred also, I can say that Yngwie, Paul Gilbert simple scale pattern stuff is definitely a phase that we grow out of but jazz style “shredding” (just fast playing) where there’s a lot of note choice and melody within the fast playing is great to listen to

tbf, joe pass wouldn’t get much attention if he were prime today. way of flat third world we all now live in
@@donsimons9810 totally agree, one of the best breathing.
He’s also hilariously funny too.
Richard Smith is just amazing!
I can't believe I didn't know about this Richard Smith guy. Now I'm watching a lot of videos of him. Incredibly talented, one of the greatest living guitarists imo.
Richard is a Master player. It seems like Norm knows everybody in the music business. Always great stories.
Norm has been doing his thing for many years. He’s known and well respected by many!
Richard Smith is an unbelievable talent!
This man is a beast of a player....no shredder beats this style of playing.....

Great player and nice man. My wife and I saw him this month, in Sacramento and he was fantastic. Has to be one of the best musicians that ever picked up a guitar.
He's a true maestro and a gentleman!
Saw him 2-3 weeks ago in Indiana, world-class musician and a super nice guy. Highly recommended!!

Was fortunate to see Richard open up for Tommy. What a player !
Yep, me too, what a support act, and he sings...
Incredible.

What an absolute guitar monster. Richard Smith is the cleanest picker on the planet period. Wow. Wow. Wow. 😮😮❤
I've seen him play live and his tone is simply unreal! The guy is the best I've heard!!!!
So impressed and happy to see and hear u Richard Smith!
Great video, Richard Smith is a genius player and Norm is a natural interviewer, laid back, bright and humourous.
Sweet playing! And cool leftie Prince tele hovering over Richard's left shoulder...
Lyrical, phrasing, and mixing up the chords along with melody lines a fantastical mastery moment that makes my afternoon. Another homerun at Norman's with Richard Smith.
Wow really fortunate to have such a legend in your store!
Two of my favorite things: Norman's Rare Guitars and Richard Smith.
Great video Norm ! Richard Smith is such a gentleman and a true virtuoso.
Amazing, as he always is. Richard never gives a bad show. A truly nice guy as well. I've played that guitar on a couple of occasions.
Amazing how he effortlessly goes from one genre to another with equal comfort.
That's some sweet playing. What a treat. The stories are always enjoyable, too.
He looks good. And boy what a master he is. Norm looking good too, keep it strong!
Wow Richard is the real deal! Very smooth and intens playing! Thank you Norm for putting him in the video!

Looking fantastic Richard . Lovely hearing you play . Keep the torch burning baby 😊🇨🇦😊🇨🇦😊🇨🇦
What a lovely bloke, and such talent and humility. Thanks Norm.

Don't forget Johnny Winter for an example of doing anything and everything with a thumb pick
Just keep practicing man you can do it
Richard you look terrific, fantastic. I hope the tour is a huge success
Sweet 🎵🎼🎶 Thank you Richard!
Sweet sounds. My tee shirt and a few small gifts arrived today! Miss you all here in Charlotte NC.
Hes amazing love the Harmonics he did never seen it done like that before cheers Richard !!!
Richard is fantastic Norm !!! Glad you had him on to showcase his talents.
Hey Richard, you are a joy to listen to. I wish I could play like you!

Man…so clean and a great tone…I could listen to that stuff all day. Definitely a CGP!
Richard Smith. A very common name for an exceptional musician.
Richard is one of my favorites. Thanks so much for posting!
Richard; Humble, understated, legendary and as good as several of the best ever, combined!
With all the turmoil, divisive rhetoric and negativity in the world, I turn to Norm's Rare Guitars channel for a reminder of the goodness in the world. Every clip makes my day more positive. Thanks everyone at Norm's!
Here's one of those guys that I check their website every month just hoping to see a performance near me. Thank God they are touring again!
One of the best is Richard, and his interaction with Tommy is phenominal, they are absolutely interwoven together.
Saw them play together live last year in Dallas. Amazing show and they just feed off each other. Highly recommend anyone to see them live.
Richard playing ‘ The entertainer’ being watched by Tommy Emmanuel who is in awe of what Smith is doing is one of the best ever UA-cam videos 👌🏻👌🏻
Richard Smith is one of the greats!
Wow. Beautiful playing.
Since I heard Richard Smith the first time I`ve been a huge fan of his . He is so impressive in his playing and he loves to play solo as well as with other big names . 😃💚
How Richard can keep that baseline going in the middle of a run blows my mind.
Great interview. Richard is a genius, an incredible talent.
wow great epsiode and dang he can play that sounded amazing happy happy keep it up Norm and dang he was all over that fret board
"Basic Rule of Thumb" Ok that cracked me up hard. Richard, and Tommy are so good together.
The first time I ever saw Richard was at the Chet festival in Nashville many, many years ago. He astounded me with his ability to go from Chet to Django and back

Polkadots and Moonbeams with that tone is BEAUTIFUL. True mastery of the guitar!
Straight off the early 1980’s Standard Brands album by Chet and Lenny.
That sure was some nice guitar playing. Some of the best I've ever heard.
Absolutely mesmerizing ...........what a brilliant guitarist Richard Smith is
There are many reasons why being English can feel a burden sometimes but seeing Richard really makes me proud to be from England - not just for his talent but he's a total English gentleman and extremely humble and kind. Thank you, Richard and ps I agree the red rocks fascinate me too!!
Why on Earth should being English be a burden?
@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 because so many countries hate us and we have done some terrible things.. Isn't that obvious?
@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 they colonized and ruined half the world's countries that's why.
@golden.lights.twinkle2329 you've never studied English history obviously 😅
A clown's comment if there ever was one.

Polka Dots and Moonbeams, TOO COOL !
Richard is a great Guitarist!!

Richard - A singular talent
I remember seeing Richard play with his two brothers, 25 years ago in the Devizes Art Centre in Swindon. He is a true virtuoso.
I seen him play with Tommy Emmanuel in Loveland Colorado was a great show awesome guitarist a real class act!
WOW that Guy can really play a guitar, I wish you had more videos of him playing
The box in the background marked, “Fragile “… is a major award!
(A Christmas Story 😊)
It must be Italian
A real guitar hero! I know he is English but his accent could almost be mistaken for Aussie at times.
you have to have an aussie accent when you can play like this. tommy emmanuel, ever heard about him? 🤣🤣🤣
Richard….you smoked man! Great playing and big thanks to Norman’s Rare Guitars for a great video!
A great interview and performance!
Two of my favourite people. Great video!
I was fortunate to see him at a house conce4rt maybe 6 years ago. He was fantastic then, but he is even better now.
Wow 😮green talent
So much better than shredding.
I agree totally:)
Yes
Yep after a very short time shredding loses whatever appeal it ever had
As someone who does listen to shred also, I can say that Yngwie, Paul Gilbert simple scale pattern stuff is definitely a phase that we grow out of but jazz style “shredding” (just fast playing) where there’s a lot of note choice and melody within the fast playing is great to listen to
Richard just shreds your brain with joy instead
Richard is looking great!
Love Richard & Tommy Emanuel. 🙏
One of the greatest acoustic players around 🙌
My guitars logged into reverb and put themselves up for sale after watching this video.
Richard Smith is simply the best.
