I am so grateful for being able to know Richard and being able to see him play many times. Each time is a magical performance that just leaves you speechless. Hope to see him again soon.
Richard is quite literally one of the best guitar players alive today, and the fact that he is so down-to-earth is amazing. He is such a fantastic guy. Thank you so much for watching!
Richard has played shows at my house in Minneapolis and he is genuinely a great guy and a wonderful conversationalist on many subjects. Oh, and he’s not a bad picker.
Good interview. It's great to hear a world class musician talk so honestly and down to earth. He's obviously got to make a living but clearly he loves what he does and how refreshing is that rather than the selfish ego trip so many other artists go on?
You are so right. Richard does and plays exactly what he loves, and has zero ego while doing it. He is one of my favorite people in this business, and I consider myself very lucky to call him a friend.
I have seen him live a few times and you are 100% correct. He is not one of those "hey, look at what I can do" musicians. As down to earth as they come.
Cody, I’ve been a drummer in bands for 40+ yrs and have recently converted to guitar, it’s been very challenging at the age of 61. I find your videos a huge boost to my focus on playing. It’s good to hear from someone who has experience and knowledge and able to give a glimpse of the “behind the scenes” look in to the current industry. Any tips are certainly appreciated! Thank you for sharing these videos. Mike
This comment makes me very happy. I’m glad people are enjoying these interviews as much as I have enjoyed making them. That’s an interesting time to transition to a new instrument - I’d love to hear more about your experience with that and why you decided to make the switch!
@@CodyJungGuitar The reason for the change was a combination of a couple of things. The first being burn out from playing. The second being, back issues. I have always had an interest in guitar playing. The fact that I am a singer as well drew me to this new instrument. I would have more opportunities playing as a single if I can learn the guitar as an accompaniment to my vocals. I enjoy your videos.
That makes a lot of sense! Definitely feel free to reach out if you ever have any particular questions about picking. I’m always happy to talk guitar!! Please keep me in the loop with how your picking is progressing!
Hey Cody, thanks for having Richard on the show. It was great to watch the interview. I am not a musician but I like music and very fond of Chet style of playing. What he shared about the dynamics of music can be applied in any area of life and expertise to attain the mastery as his. A request, what was the song you guys jammed in the end, sounded in Em key. If you don't mind what all chords did you strum with that melody. Thanks a ton, I would love to go over the other videos. Love from Bangalore, India :)
Hey Suvro! Richard is a great friend and one of the best guitarists out there. I’m so happy his interview is getting some attention. It’s awesome that Chet and Richard have fans all around the world! As far as the song at the end, it’s “The Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish.” Chef played it on his “Down Home” album. Definitely a fun (and relatively easy) song to play if you’re a thumbstyle player.
Thanks mate. Definitely Chet and Richard are admired everywhere for the kind of music they have played (have been playing). They are legends and have inspired generations. The song at the end is amazing and I should give that a try. Keep up the good work and say "Hi" to all those beautiful musicians from Nashville.
that people who help Richard Smith letting him and his wife stay in for a couple of months are real good people, Now Richard Smith is one of my top guitar hero.
It's unreal to get to sit and pick with a guy like that. If you haven't listened to Eddie Pennington or Thom Bresh before, they're two more guys whose thumbs cannot be stopped!
Paul Yandell was certainly a treasure! Somewhere floating out there was an interview he did where he went into a deep dive of Chet’s setup (both live and recording) throughout the years, and it’s a goldmine of information!

Richard is absolutely one of the best guys on the planet, let alone one of the best guitarists! Thanks for watching, Jim!
@@CodyJungGuitar He always comes across as a really nice guy in interview. Very down to earth.
Then his personality comes across in interviews, because that’s genuinely how he is as a person!
Great interview with the great Richard Smith!!!
Thank you! Richard is one of the best for sure!
lucky enough to see him play - so much humility for such incredible talent.

@@CodyJungGuitar I love those rag videos he did - I must have watched them 100 times each.
I think Richard’s ragtime stuff is some of his best, which is saying something because he’s extraordinary at just about everything.

Awesome guy and great interview! Whats the name of the tune at the end?
Thank you! The tune at the end is “The Girlfriend of the Whirling Dervish.” Check it out!
Great interview👍🇬🇧
Thank you! Richard makes my job easy in this interview, for sure! Haha.
Good interview! Really like Richard.
Thank you! Richard is the man!

Will do! And if you take a crack at “The Girlfriend if the Whirling Dervish,” send me a link to the video of you playing it!

They really are wonderful people. That’s something Richard and I have talked about quite a bit, and I know he is infinitely grateful for those folks.
He has such a weird accent, born in the South of England, moved to Nashville and sounds like an Australian now lmao
Richard has that authentic Chet “thumb” sound better than anybody.

The closest thing to Chet as far as I'm concerend is Paul Yandell. 25 years as Chet's sidekick payed off.

nylonsteel Very British mate. ;)
Very, very British.
