This
So true.
o7 and praise da SUN
Dam, I wanna put like on this comment, but don’t want to be 667th
"i dont need help"
"of course you do, we all do."
that shit hit hard
All humans need help, we wouldn’t have gotten to where we are now without helping one another in some fashion, we are a social species, we may have advanced to a point where we can believe we can live on our lonesome, however that will never truly be the case. We’re strong because we have one another, we persist because of our ancestors and because of those here and now, our strength comes from our past, working together to survive powerful predators…youre not weak cause you desire help, in fact it’s the inverse…youre weak because you dont think you do, alone we are weak and fragile, together however we are steel, we are an unbreaking chain when we work together
That's Dark Souls.
Git gud human
Humans interact with one another in one of 3 modes, along a range of intensity and so on.
1. Control ...by force, fear, intimidation, etc.
Mild : If you keep talking like that, I won't help you with ___. Learn some manners.
Extreme : Totalitarian/Authoritarian Dictatorship with secret police and other enforcement methods.
Chaotic : go until the law catches up to you, or just - go. Do what you want or can get away with.
Look out for yourself because no one else will.
Mild versions. Theft, cheating
Extreme : pre or post civilization chaotic environment. What you build may be stolen by roving bandits / gifted to someone useful to them. & The last bandit group may have a new leader or be displaced by another group within a (time period).
Cooperative : non-violent and not coercive interactions. Mutually beneficial exchanges.
Example The teamwork in a loving family where individuals support each other both emotionally and in practical ways
A sports team that works together like a well oiled machine on the field ...and keeps each other out of trouble off the field.
All cooperation depends on trust.
Specialization and exchange, mutually beneficial barter/trade and living in groups all rely on trust.
You can not build even a village with stone age technology if everyone is afraid that someone else in the group may kill them and take their stuff. Your ability to extend Cooperation to anyone outside your group (and existing alliances) relies on ability and willingness to attempt at least limited trust before resorting to hostility.
Any civilization depends first on trust.
First, you trust the world around you is consistent, & not entirely random. You trust that there is rational order that can be discovered and used to your advantage if you allign your life, belief, and actions with objective truth. In religious terms: love the Lord (rational source of law & order) with all your heart, mind, strength, and soul.
The next kind of trust, is trust that others who appear different are fundamentally people like yourself. You - and they - are deserving of dignity, basic politeness, and consideration. (In religious terms : Love your neighbor as yourself.)
Recognizing the 'self' in 'other' is an essential part of developing the ability to mentally predict the reactions of others.
Starting with limited trust, then building and maintaining trust and extending it to others is the foundation of civilization ...ALL civilizations.
Basic principles that guide all behaviors in consistent and predictable ways that build and maintain trust = morality.

When the player's own knowledge, skill, and experience are the most overpowered thing in the game, that's a damn good system. Because you absolutely know that person earned that win, not because of some cheesy build.
"I don't care if your armour is the toughest, or your sword the sharpest, I'm going to beat you to death with a stick, and you'll never land a single hit on me."
They just that gud
It's great that Solaire's view on weapons and armor is that they're just "to look good, like me" because Solaire's gear really is unremarkable, statwise. He's the living embodiment of "just get good".
Fashion Souls is the true purpose of weapons and armor!
I mean, aside from poise, armor doesn't really do much in DS3, so he's definitely right
That chonky healthbar and mega stronks make him incredibly powerful.

I've been dealing with depression. The kind that makes the world turn grey. The kind that makes thinking painful.
I'm feeling a bit better now- this was exactly what I needed to hear.
Thank you.
Praise the Sun!
Bro...!
Much empathy for your struggles mate. You're not alone, even though (in my experience at least) depression can feel isolating. Keep pressing on. Don't you dare go hollow.
Don't worry, you will recover
It's four months later. I know depression can be cyclical. I hope you had help then and are doing better these days. You aren't alone.
I've had a similar thing happen with my anxiety. I have a fear of failure and of disappointing people. The only reason I didn't use the word "crippling" is because that's what it used to be. A combination of talking about it, therapy, and Dark Souls has made me accept that failure is an acceptable learning tool. I ended up going from fearing to turn in a homework assignment to thinking "okay, even if this sucks, that is fine because no good professor wants to see you fail." Why? Because I had an arena where each time I failed, I laughed about it and tried again. Even when I played with friends, some of who are veteran Dark Souls players, I just laughed. When I spoke with a professor about my struggles, I was no longer on the verge of tears: I was cracking jokes. Even now, I'm amazed that a video game became a platform that has helped me get to a healthier emotional state.
ChibiGeeBee, I seriously hope you find the help you need. Whether that be therapy, talking about it with friends and/or family, or even just a shitton of Gittin' Gud in Dark Souls, I hope you can experience happiness in life. Praise the Sun :)

This is kinda like, a good version of a peptalk to a depressed person. It's really hard, you need to empathize with the struggle, but at the same time find a way to sneak a sense of empowerment through a thick hide of practiced and internalized... pre-defeat. I haven't played this game, and I've started watching this video when I need a motivational pick-me-up. Kudos guys.
My head canon have always been that DS1 in it's entirety is a metaphor for depression, and that really helped me make progress.
There is a video essay that talks about how dark souls can help with depression. It certainly helped me and I keep coming back every time an episode comes to me
@@Nemo.404 I've seen a couple of those, which one is it?

@@rafstrayhorn5772 don't compare depression to something like cancer. Organism sickness is competly different from mental one.
You cannot talk out cancer out of someone. But you can talk to someone who have depression and motivate them to keep going. It's constant struggle in the head that cannot be controlled. But it can be fighted against and the only one who can really help someone with this. Is the sick person. Testament of "GIT GUD" is about "getting better", there is no secret. But. Just. Trying...

Then you need to search for and watch - "We are the souls (new ending)"
"You need to get good.
- That's really, really, really hard!
Of course it's hard. We all struggle, sunbro. Everyone of us.
Throughout our lives, we can get knocked down, and frustrated. We fail, we experience extreme loss. In order to recover and continue on our journey, we have to be focused, we have to practice, and we have to learn from our mistakes. And hey, a bit of help of a jolly cooperation never hurts either.
- I don't need any help…
Of course you do. We all do. These things I'm saying are not new. Nor are they specific to you. It is advice as old as time itself. Passed down, generation to generation, since before the age of ancients. So you see, "get good" is not some dismissive meme, quite the contrary. It speaks to a truth at the heart of our entire lives. "GIT GUD" Is honestly the best advice there is whether it be in FromSoft games or just life itself. It isn't going to be easy, in fact it's going to be incredibly difficult. There isn't any secret that makes any of it easier. You are going to fail again and again. The only advice there is is you need to keep getting back up, keep trying and eventually you will persevere. You simply need to git gud.
It's like cough syrup in a way- disgusting to take, but really helpful
Well that was unexpectedly wholesome and relevant.
That, and Ben's acting (or digging down) keeps amazing me.
I agree, I was waiting and wondering where the punchline was going to come from. Where's the twist? And they just walked off into the sunset straight as an arrow.
I love how solaire says it's all about skill not stats, when in a previous episode he vanquished a boss just with two lightning bolts 😆
Yes, with skill!
Ah, but Tis not skill my sunbros. Tis faith.
Perhaps he wasn't born that strong and had to git gud before you meet him...

I know this was a souls logic but this could easly be slotted into the mental health skit category too thank you
Omg, a positive spin on a trolling meme combined with an actually good character developing speech. Masterful
Ironically this is what I genuinely tell my friends who struggle in Souls-esque games. A lot of them struggle and the only real advice I can give them is "find a play style and get good with it." Cause that's honestly what those games boil down to.
Now yeah, there's some cheesy weapons in each game, but those are usually only found if you already know the games well enough to find them in the first place. Those literally cannot matter if you're not good enough at the game to have the ability to procure the items anyway.
That really is what git gud means. I used to think it was a troll too until I understood.
The whole point is tho that it's not a troll. Even people who tell you this in spite without the flowery package are still right. At least, for the large majority of the souls experience.
The primary conceit is the belief that there is a singular piece of advice that solves the problem. There isn't. In the first place, there are so many viable playstyles that noone can really tell you what'll work for you.
Sometimes there are hidden mechanics or formula that make the whole thing make sense, but that requires a) you're reasonably competent in a playstyle, and b) you know what questions to ask. If you're just throwing out blanket "how to win?" questions, you're going to get blanket "git gud" answers.

It's does not mean you suck. It isn't meant to be gatekeeping. It's just meant to say that the game doesn't need to change for you to enjoy it and to beat it.
I think people psyche themselves out before they play the game. They are scared of failure and that's the only real way to go hollow.
Contrary to popular belief most of the souls community ive played with are very much like solaire in this video. Most of us will help you in any way we can, explain whatever you need to know, walk you through the game but at the same time will let you know that learning how to deal with the challenges yourself in your own way is its own rewarding experience AND that everyone had to get good at some point.
We all died, it took us practice so don't be discouraged. And no matter how good you are you will still die and it is not failure.

@@tommyherbertson8037 If it's Alan then he can pull off a really good British accent - but I thought from the other skit with Solaire that it was Rob..
The UA-cam story makes me think it's Rob.
It's definitely Rob playing Solaire. Rob's pinkies got injured while he was training in Brazillian Ju-Jitsu. When Ben's subscibers bought him a PS5, they put expertly drawn scenes from Ben's Soul's Logic series on the sides. On one side was Solaire... including Rob's bent pinkies! Plus, as Rob was playing Dark Souls for the first time, he kept quoting Solaire's speech from this episode. 100% Rob.
This is probably the best thing I've seen in a long while. It's so hard not to dismiss those words since they get used mostly for trolling, but gotta give it to Solaire, who just made it into the greatest wisdom to ever be taught.
It was always the greatest wisdom. It just got lost, buried beneath rage and frustration, and misused/overused by the arrogant.
I learnt this myself around Dark Souls original release. Couldn't get past blighttown for the longest time, got told "git gud" so often, and ended up rage quitting. Went back a year later, and a year smarter, and I realised how so many other games are just... well, soulless. Progression in most other games is just about what level you are or how strong your equipment is. But in Dark souls those things are almost meaningless. Instead Dark Souls progression is about you, not your character. You improve yourself to progress. As soon as I figured that out I realised most of the "git gud" I received wasn't insults but actual advice. The game became so much easier that things I couldn't do at lv200 with a +10 weapon I could suddenly easily do at lv20 with my bare hands.
I actually started applying it to other games, ones that just let you progress through levels and equipment, and I found it worked in most of those too. Then I applied it to real life, and gained things I thought were not within reach. Dark Souls literally changed my life by teaching me such a basic lesson that in hindsight should have been obvious.
This helped me with depression, the loss of my father and the birth of my daughter. I will forever try to GIT GUD. Thanks to Ben and SunBro. Praise The Sun!

Really powerful and wise advice from a game meant to torture and destroy every fiber of your being...
It's a game that's meant to purge weakness and bring out your true potential. In that sense, yes. It breaks you, but only so you can recover stronger than before. Stronger than it can hurt you. Strong enough that little else can break you again.
You should change 'torture an destroy' to ;test and develop'
To torture and destroy... Or to cause you to git gud.
Well I don't think it is meant to torture you at all.
Yes it can seem like that at 1st, I think the biggest turning point for me was accepting I failed and died.
If you accept "death" or "failure" it doesn't become an aggravating game.
It's not about being the best, or "purging your weakness". It's just about learning where not to fail, and were to persevere.
1st time I was hitting my head against everything to kill it. Wasn't quick wasn't strong. I just wasn't dying, which meant I was winning.
My progress started with the simple shield and spear, judge me all you want. But it was progress, and that I think the essence of "git gud".

Gonna be absolutely heartbreaking in S3 when Ben finishes Solaire’s quest line.
Depends on how you finish Solaire's quest.. On one hand he loses his purpose... on the other hand, he loses his sanity....
Well.... Both are heartbreaking in fact.. One is sad, the other one is sadder... Damn, now I'm crying!! :(((

This went from a troll phrase to the most insightful helpful advice ever. I love this.
it never was a troll phrase, ( if u talk about people on internet saying it ) nobody explained it as well as solaire thats it
“Git Gud” isn’t a troll phrase for most people who’ve played Dark Souls, but I see how it could be mistaken as such by those who haven’t played the series (and I suspect many players looking for advice also feel it’s a troll until they themselves understand its meaning).
What Solaire says here is actually at the heart of the game’s design. It’s a metaphor for life: yes it’s hard and you will fail, but what matters is you learn, keep going and never give up. The game encourages you to try, don’t you dare go hollow.
It’s an antidote to the sugar coated participation trophy BS and bulldozer parenting that leads to narcissism and entitlement. That’s why I think the game has famously helped so many people overcome depression. It’s so beloved by its fans because it is a revelatory experience providing crucial life lessons that are no longer being taught.
Git Gud is simply telling people to keep at it. There isn’t a trick. DS is so well designed and balanced that anyone can succeed, hell, people can beat it using literal bananas (look it up)!
However, since “git gud” it became a meme there are plenty of people who now use it to troll. If you see it used in context of games that aren’t souls-like, (especially competitive multiplayer games like CoD, Halo, etc.) that’s probably a troll.
@@michaelk4480 Truest true that trued.
The delivery of this skit was perfect. I was afraid that they were going to end on a joke, but they nailed it.
This is probably the best skit they've done.
Honestly I think this was the most wholesome episode I ever did see.
I shed a tear. That was beautiful. Solaire is truly the best. PRAISE THE SUN!!

PRAISE THE SUN!!!!
PRAISE THE SUN TILL YOU GO HOLLOW MY FRIEND
Getting good is not just a meme
It's a way of life
The lesson learned in this video is on par with a masterful work of cinema. Sure nothing big budget or spectacular, but something influential. Quite beautiful I must say, praise the sun and let this meme stick with us, until we conquer the struggles within our lives, and to the lives that come after us.
This is the only acceptable use of "get gud" I've ever encountered. Thank you for this, and Praise the Sun!
The retrospective flashback throughout the series is a really great touch
I just realize that if people says gg in chat after winning it could also mean git gud

It took me many years, and this video, to realize that "Git Gud", while clearly a trolling insult on reddit, is also an open invitation to overcome challenges you didn't think you could. I mastered AC6, when I was on the verge of giving up, thanks to this realization.
This is by far one of my favorite videos on UA-cam.
I really ... REALLY glad this didn't end in some kind of joke or trolling, because it would ruin such a beautiful moment. Really shows how Solare cares about his sunbro.
Likewise. I love that Solaire is portrayed so genuinely in this.
Yesss! As it was getting towards the end I kept glancing nervously at how many seconds were left! 😂 We needed this 👐
I'm gonna be so sad if they go with his canonical death ingame here
A wise man once said"In dark souls you aren't leveling up your character, you level up your self"
"In order to play well, you have to die well" A friend from the Ultima Online days once told me.
This is so wholesome! Praise the sun!
I didn't expect that to be so sincere
"Just to look good of course, like me."
Fashionsouls is the true endgame!
The souls logic series became my favorite series of Viva La Dirt League. This episode wraps up everything that a player has to go through to complete a soulsborn game.
This one should have a BILLION views. It's everyone's dark souls classic.
That was really, really good! It is refreshing to really hear someone give advice who doesn't have an ulterior motive. Speaks about our society and how rare such things are. This touched my heart and made me feel better than I was. Thank you, truly. We could all use a Solaire in our lives in which supports his advice about how we all need help.
Ulterior motives are stupid!
Your words speak far truer than many spoken before. It is true that it was the intention of Miyazaki to make Solaire the holy being that is truth worthy and truly faithful and loyal to the bitter end. It is true that we all need a solaire, but we can also be a solaire. If you dont have a solaire in your life then become him. His level of honor and respect is much needed in a world such as this........even when you or I become solaire in every way and still dont have a solaire that does the same for us and we have to bare our depths of emotions to our grave then at least let us die knowing we cared for others and did the best to set them to the right path. Because....I know that is what Solaire would truly do if he was here with us right now. *Praise the Sun for it will forever touch our hearts......*

Here’s hoping for a season 3: this show’s amazing.
This is so heartwarming of a ending for season 2.

@@lostinnepal7897 If it's supposed to apply to life, then it's a really stupid advice. Real life doesn't value persistence. It's all about luck. That's what's beautiful about games: the rules are the same for everyone, and you get rewarded for playing well. Real life doesn't have rules, it doesn't reward you for doing good things. Well done, thank you and praise the sun... Bro.
Came here after hearing Jim Sterling's awful video on the git good aspect of the dark souls community. This video is so great for people to recommend to others when they don't understand the meaning of git good.
This video needs to be shown to every new souls player. Before I got Gud I would read that and it infuriated me. Over time I learned this exact lesson. Getting gud is a state of mind. It is a lifestyle one must live, it is more meta than simply getting better.
Once you learn the area and how enemies fight it can still be hard but you know what to do
It's not just Dark Souls, plenty of games need to heed this advice. Sea of Thieves being a big one.

Standing ovation for Ben and the crew, S2 was flawless! ♥
This . . . is actually something I needed to hear right now.
I guess Hornet saying “GIT GUD” was the best advice anyone could offer :)
Now that was awesome and genuinely inspiring. I felt Ben's frustration and Solair's sincerity. Thanks for making this Viva.
That was… wow. Just… That was deep. I mean, Ben had a point: he didn’t need to hear “Git gud”; he needed to hear “Your rolls need to be quick, your parries need to be precise.” He needed the explanations of all that “Git gud” was a shorthand for. But the life lesson in it all was striking.
Indeed, I think it's a life lesson for everyone. Most advice people give is "git gud" but you hardly hear what you need to get "git gud" at. We all need a bit of help, a little nudge and then we're finally ready to "git gud".
I never thought I'd see a video about the "git gud" turn into something great like this.
Solaire's advice, followed by the "git gud" is a way of softening the "git gud" and making Ben appreciate the phrase.
@@mnArqal93 Actually, only our own parents that gave us the proper advice, and elaborated on the “git gud”. When we finally step out to life, no one will ever explain it to us but simply say the term “git gud” as they themselves need to “gir gud” and they don’t have the time to sit down to explain it to us.
@@stevenlee3240 I think the whole relying on parents/family to teach you shouldn't be people's mindset, even some parents don't (or won't) have the time to teach their children.
I never really had that advice, I was just expected to "git gud" from the get go. I've had to often turn to professionals for this advice. Even now I struggle with a lot, some of that is down to my own health problems. I'm fortunate enough these days that there who are people I know are willing to be patient with me. But not everyone is fortunate enough.
I think with some people is they've figured things out and don't realise that there's some people who haven't. Things come easier to some people than others. In the case of this video there's a lot of Bens out there still in need of a Solaire. Giving someone a little bit of help doesn't hurt.
@@mnArqal93 That's why I said only our parents actually did that. If even they don't do that, then no one will tbh. Professionals for help? They will only teach you about work and thing you need to know to enter the professional world, not teaching you how to live. You either teach yourself on that regard or your parents (Or your guardians, etc.). Thing such as manner, way of speech, behavior, and stuffs like that are taught to you by your parents (guardians) and school, and even school doesn't sit down and carefully teach you that either. They have many children to tend to. If parents don't instruct you when you were young, then you'll have to "git gud" yourself but don't expect anyone else actually explain to you how to "git gud".
This whole series was an absolute work of art. Thank you for making it happen.
This is my favorite VLDL sketch, this is damned good life advice. Basically, life will throw things at you, knock you down, challenge you... Git Gud is a mind-set, you get back up, learn and try again, eventually you do .. Git Gud :)
Top Video, really good stuff.
