@@TheStonewall117 Eventually yes, definitely. I one of those folks that rarely buys games right at release, and almost never preorders. Following this video, I won't buy it immediately because of issues of personal taste that aren't meant as a criticism of the game's quality (which sounds top-notch). I prefer odd and fantastical settings to "hard" sci-fi, I'm a big fan of varied and meaningful companion characters (which doesn't sound like a focus), and given the history of Bethesda games it's likely modders will work wonders with this game at a very fast pace (which rewards waiting). I'm also currently playing through BG3 (one of the few games I did preorder - a decision also influenced by this channel actually) which approaches a perfect game for me, so all that combined means I don't feel much urgency to get Starfield immediately. That said I trust Mortim when he says it's a great title and I will 100% be keeping this near the top of my list of next games to purchase and likely be exploring space before the year is done.
I personally watch Gameranx but I'm watching anything and everything right now as I'm waiting to play the damn game (less than 3 hours!!!). Didn't end up watching the whole thing though because it felt a little too spoilery for my taste, but I did watch the conclusion and yeah, good to know someone who 100% the game thinks it's worth it
Yes, which is very weird because as humans, we're disturbingly prone to colonizing everything we can- even already occupied land. We're so adaptive that within generations, we generally can withstand different climates better than the first generation. I'm.not just talking lower oxygen, I'm talking places with different temperature and weather extremes, to the point that adaptation can bite outside the preferred areas. Same thing with eating- Europeans developed the ability to digest and process lactose with less issue than most areas of the world, which has endured through the ages.
This is the first Bethesda game that I think I'm only playing once; I don't think mods will make me want to really play the full game again (on PC, 100 hours on character). Here are a few things I dont like: characters and NPCs: everyone is just around for you all time time. The stores are always open and nobody has a schedule outside of you. It feels like an amusement park where staff is always peforming for my character instead of living in the world (stores always open, same people always awake, etc). 2nd thing: loading screens and menus. The UI drives me crazy; it's slow and unresponsive. This rolls directly into how I feel about exploring, as I needed to build an outpost to store stuff, and that experience is something I will only engage in once; llanet exploration is so dull that it's not worth landing on any planets any more. 3rd: I just don't care about the story. It just gets a shoulder shrug from me. I don't feel that it's necessarily poignant, and the loop of artifact collection and puzzle solving is so much less interesting than playing any Fallout or ES game. Enemy factions are more faceless than generic raiders in my opinion, and all the alien life just makes me think No Man's Sky's goofy creatures. They just all feel so lacking, I don't know how else to explain them. I would have been more interested in seeing a "Noah's Ark" situation where Earth's animals were spread across the universe amd adapted in weird and wonderful ways instead of odd genetic mashup of alien life on each planet. Those are a few of my negatives; for positives, I'd say performance has been great. I think it's a pretty game. Definitely opportunities to do a lot of things with your character and ship, even if I don't find the systems particularly appealing, they are expansive. Combat can be a lot of fun, a la Fallout 4. Overall, I'd recommend GamePass, not buying a new PC, to play the game!
I agree with a lot of this. One thing I slightly disagree with is that I actually do think the overall story is quite cool. It's just that too many of the quests associated with it are such a drag. It also doesn't help that the characters in this story tend to be quite flat both on paper and during dialogue. Basically, it's a good framework for a story held back tremendously by its execution.

Yesterday I watched a video of someone talk for 30 minutes about how Starfield is a failure of a game and their example to illustrate the colossal failure was that the computers on the ship orbiting Paradiso were the same type of computers you use in the modern ships, even though their ship is 200 years old... now today I watch a 52 minute video where someone covers the good and bad of the game and discusses the nuances of it as an RPG but still holds it accountable for its flaws without trashing it into oblivion for clout or bandwagon sake. A refreshing and much appreciated analysis. Wish I saw this 9 months ago lol!

I’m a huge science fiction fan and so far this game has not been a disappointment to me(you guys have to excuse my grammar mistakes,English isn’t my native language) what an absolute brilliant piece of art this review was and I enjoyed it immensely, thank you 😊

Best review I've seen so far. Explain many doubts I had even after watching many others. Very good work. Most reviews are just interested in giving a number in the end and not "reviewing" the game
This really provided a more in depth look that other outlets didn’t provide. You and ACG mentioned some of the largest gripes but provided the gamer perspective that it’s FUN. Thank you for the hard work and you actually influenced my decision to purchase.
You are the man, Mort. I come to your channel first. You are always balanced, detailed, and easily accessible/understood. Thx for what you do, and thx for getting me pumped for this game.
@AarushKumar-sf1vk I’d still be surprised if it launches and turns out to be a good game. Bethesda hasn’t made a good rpg ever. Skyrim was an awesome game with 350+ mods, but even then it was dry and boring in it’s delivery with the story and dialogue. Mortem here saying ”most choices don’t matter” isn’t a surprise at all.
Thank you for going into depth about the gist of the game. I've been cautiously optimistic about it so far, and this video answered a lot that I was wondering.
Your reviews are always stellar, and your 100% definitely pays respects to the efforts of the developers, but YOU'RE A GAMING GOD in my opinion. 100% is no easy feat!!
I am just so absolutely bored with ground combat. The AI is horrible and I almost never feel like I’m on my heels other than fighting that huge bullet sponge monster in the clone colony basement. And even with that one I just went back down a hallway it couldn’t fit into and melted it. I am actually about to just drop down to standard level gear because my DR and DMG are just too much. Yes, I’m playing on very hard. I still enjoy the game and I hope BGS moves to continue improving on it. Thank you for your review and not just jumping on the Starfield hate bandwagon of many reviewers on YT.
Try the new extreme setting and visit higher level systems. Chance of getting one or two shot to death is more likely. The AI is not that bad. Enemies charge if they feel confident, flee when they meet strong resistance or get seriously injured. They tend to use surroundings and environment for cover, even shoot from behind cover. If still not convinced, try melee
Thank you! I like how you speak about game standards regarding quality and content, how you avoid spoilers, and how you specify what are your personal opinions. Nice work! 🤩
The handcrafted stuff is great. That's basically what I did my first run. Then on my second I thought I would take whole days of play bouncing around and even then I would run into unique places with a little story to them but that was about 1 in 8 jumps/landings. I don't think there's any reason to intensely hate the game. All it's hand stuff is fun and detailed and the other places are kind of an xp resource farm and fun to find a few diamonds in the rough.
Thank you for this. I bought the game a few days ago and have to wait until September 6th. But I feel confident in my purchase after hearing a review from someone who has put all the hours into his review and 100% completing the game
Great review Mort, thanks for your hard work. Regarding the 'Thing' you don't want to mention, that was teased in the final trailer - can you give an opinion on how well executed/substantial/enjoyable it was? Is the 'Illithid powers' mechanic in BG3 an appropriate analogue (in terms of game design, rather than in any potential narrative context)?
I learned more about this game from watching this, over any other video. Thanks for taking your time and speaking in a way that didn't seem snobby/like I was a toddler or like you were paid off or had a agenda to make yourself sound/look good.
@@sirloock8360 I did. Just put more weight on his opinion than I should have. But lesson learned, he and I don’t like the same games. Back to my other trusted reviewers I know I see eye to eye with.
The only real issue I've found with Starfield is if you want to play as a "bad guy". It's definitely an afterthought but everything else is a solid 7.5-8.
Learning nothing whatsoever from fallout 4, which again had no evil path or actual decision making. Like in fo4, you cannot even deny a quest or ever actually insult somebody.

Didn't end up watching the whole thing though because it felt a little too spoilery for my taste, but I did watch the conclusion and yeah, good to know someone who 100% the game thinks it's worth it
No cutting corners here, PC build
It breaks my heart nobody recognizes the “adoring fan” from oblivion
I literally laughed when I saw the character haha I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it
So are there only 4 major cities on 1000 planets?
Yes, which is very weird because as humans, we're disturbingly prone to colonizing everything we can- even already occupied land. We're so adaptive that within generations, we generally can withstand different climates better than the first generation. I'm.not just talking lower oxygen, I'm talking places with different temperature and weather extremes, to the point that adaptation can bite outside the preferred areas. Same thing with eating- Europeans developed the ability to digest and process lactose with less issue than most areas of the world, which has endured through the ages.
Most of the planets are empty rock
Wow i didn't expect that review so fast, The Power of Mortismal
You and ACG are my go to reviewers. Amazing work 🎉

One question, how do companion skills factor into gameplay? Can you send a companion to pick a lock, stealth kill an enemy, or craft stuff? Or do you need to do everything skillwise that you want to do?
They can be assigned to work on things in your outposts, combat they just kind of attack based on what they have and can't be given orders
@@MortismalGaming Thanks for the info, it's a shame they can't do more but I guess that also lets you take whatever companion you want without worrying about getting the one with optimized skills then.

By far the most helpful and informative review on this.
Really good review. Well paced, informative but not bloated. Nicely done.
Ready to watch this channel take off. Proud of the work you put in.
Insane man! You are awesome, excited to see you 100% BG3 still but glad to see starfield too!
Thank you for one of the few competent reviews out there. You are a gem sir.,
Great to see that this really is more like Daggerfall than Skyrim In Space. Amazing! Definitely going to buy it now after watching your amazing review.
What made me think about it is that you also could buy... a ship in Daggerfall
Isn't it more like fallout 4 in space tho?
Agreed, it reminds me of Daggerfall with its scope. I can understand how fast traveling around can annoy ppl, but that was 90% of Daggerfall, imo. No one was running across that map 😂

Best review of this game I've seen. You really explain HOW it feels to play the game without spoiling WHAT is in the game.
not really, when you fail to explain what certain systems do such as the settlement building it's less than useful.
So how does it feel to play the game now that you have had the chance to play it for yourself?
Just so you know, yours is the first review of this game I wanted to see and it's the first one I watched. I just can't believe it was today!
This is the best and most informative review I've watched for the game. You actually gave information that's good to know for playing the game. Thank you.
The review I was looking forward to. Appreciate the work you put into it ! :)
Thank you for an actual review that explains the basics gameplay without any spoilers. 10/10
just piggybacking along this thought; I was scared to click on the review since I havent finished the main story yet. Thankfully, he didnt spoil anything
When your review is trending and more viewed than an ACG review of the same title you know you've made it to the top. Amazing work as always. Congrats on the well deserved views!
I guess but ACG is overrated imo, SkillUp is the gold standard but Mort is up there with him regardless of how many views he gets
@@fatbroccoli8for me I think it's more of what genre and game focuses the reviewer excels. Myself doesn't lean towards skill up when it comes to reviewing gameplay focused titles 🙆

Agreed! He's the best RPG reviewer on UA-cam, by far the very best.
One of the best reviews I've seen in a while. 50 minutes and you managed to restrain yourself from spoiling everything, unlike most other reviews. You also played to the end of the game, unlike other reviews.
All sorts of reviews coming out, but the minute I saw yours I knew it was the one I needed to see. Love your presentation style.
I really want to pick this game up and a Xbox series X. Love the Fallout franchise. Won’t be getting it due to being laid off recently, looking for work.
Hope you find a job soon
Expected much more from Starfield.
You can always expect more from its DLC.
You were expecting a No Man's Sky clone
@@jimmythegamer2231game is just bad
The decision to include the 'Background' option in this makes me hopeful that we'll get something similar in the next Elder Scrolls installment.
Lowkey wasn't expecting you to have this out day 1, absolutely crushing it with content lately dude!
I must say, this is a great review, I love the game I’m nowhere near the time you’d put in but I’m 20 hours into it and it feels like I just started playing. I’m a huge science fiction fan and so far this game has not been a disappointment to me(you guys have to excuse my grammar mistakes,English isn’t my native language) what an absolute brilliant piece of art this review was and I enjoyed it immensely, thank you 😊
Great video! I don't hold the same opinions after playing it myself especially about the srory as I thought it was far too familiar. I am most appreciative to hear the opinion of someone who 100% it. Thanks for the video.
Best review I've seen so far. Explain many doubts I had even after watching many others. Very good work.
Most reviews are just interested in giving a number in the end and not "reviewing" the game
UA-cam should have option for filtering congrats and thank you comments
Starfield is one of the greatest games of the last decade. I started all over again with new mods. It just keeps getting better!
Wow. Just...wow. This is my first time on your channel, and I am thoroughly impressed. Well done. What an amazing and in-depth review.
Quite a surprise coming from Bethesda, thank you again for another stellar review.
Stellar lol nice
Reviews are actually bad.
@stefannicic6509 it isn't, its whopping 88 on metacritic which is a lot for a Bethesda game, fallout 4 was only 84 but it was a great game
@AarushKumar-sf1vk One that doesn't require modders to fix absolutely every damn aspect of the game? Yes, totally.
Was definitely not expecting this review from you already dude, great work. Watching as I type can’t wait to see what you think.
Thank you for going into depth about the gist of the game. I've been cautiously optimistic about it so far, and this video answered a lot that I was wondering.
This is why I subscribe. Way to crank out this review!
100% day one review….intense and awesome. As always, thanks!
Best review I’ve watched, new subscriber ❤
I appreciate your even-handed reviews without needing to be shocking or sensationalized - well done.
I'm buying this game because of your review 👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mortim. Nice video.
Most comprehensive and best review I've seen so far.
Your reviews are always stellar, and your 100% definitely pays respects to the efforts of the developers, but YOU'RE A GAMING GOD in my opinion. 100% is no easy feat!!
This is a great review, done very well and with good information. I’m only 8 hours in and should have watched this first. Thank you.
1 Million Views for my boy, totally deserved. Congratulations.
From me too!
God damn that is a detailed review. You have truly become a master of your craft.
