I recently discovered a mod that only allows Preston to give out one Minuteman quest at a time and makes it such that, for the most part, you have to actually ask him to receive another quest. It also makes it such that you have to actually tune your radio to Radio Freedom for it to give you a quest. It's really made a difference for me since it allows me to control the pacing much more effectively. I no longer feel like I have to avoid Preston and my game experience is immeasurably improved by just this little adjustment. Bethesda really messed things up by programming Preston to throw out those quests every time the player was anywhere near to him.
It would still be even nicer if one could reject a settlement acquisition quest outright so that I could group my settlements in particular areas of the map (so that I don't have to run very far to defend against settlement attacks) - but maybe there is another mod for that and I just haven't found it yet in the Xbox list.

Any two of Starfield’s faction storylines are as big (and better written/paced) than FO4’s entire main plot.
It’s a fundamentally different game; not worse, different.

One of my favorite main stories in gaming is a full conversion mod for Skyrim. Enderal features a fantastic story and some side quests that I will never forget. It's still insane that it's free, and while I'll never be entirely comfortable with paying for every mod for a game, I would understand paying for full conversion mods. Enderal took me 90 hours to finish, which is double the game length of most games. Enderal features some excellent VA (and some bad VA) and has some cutscenes that are better than anything in Skyrim

New Vegas idk why ppl like it other than you can choose idiotic things and I always play games as myself. So I could be a lil bias admittedly.

Oh, man, hearing you talk about this game's story has given me flashbacks on how much I hated it when I first played it. And it's not that it's all terrible, it's that is frustrating how better it could have been and the amount of stuff that goes nowhere and/or is forced upon you without having no control to the end result, beggining with the character choice. It doesn't matter if you choose to play as the war veteran Nate or the seasoned lawyer Norah, both play the exact same way. That's a huge missed opportunity. If you're forcing me to have a backstory, make that backstory count. Have Norah be better at talking and worse at fighting and viceversa. Make Nate's combat skill count for stuff and Norah's intelligence play out in some situations. Give me a reason to choose who I play as beyond cosmetic options.
But no. Of course not. Because this game is too afraid of not pleasing every player.

  • @baronvonslambert

I like pretty much everything about FO4 save the story. I am not a parent, I have no desire to have children of my own, I, while I am capable of being compassionate towards a parent losing their child and being isekai'd 212 years into the future, I'm incapable of true empathy and understanding for such a character, and therefore unable to truly put myself in the characters shoes. So shouting about Shawn every 27.3 seconds in every other conversation really pulls me out of the world and the character.
A simple "Pragmatist"speech option everytime Shawn came up that let you focus on the whole "Isekai'd 212 years into the future" and deflect the whole "missing child" thing would have done wonders for immersion and role-play for myself and others lile me.
You're 212 years from home, in a strange world, with unknown dangers, few friends, and few resources, any sane person would worry about their own survival and establish themselves before sprinting off into a radioactive wasteland unprepared to chase after a child they don't know the location of, and that's probably not still alive seeing as *gestures broadly at irradiated hellscape*

What I like to do when I play Fallout 4, just lean all the way into the reworked power armor and roleplay as a Nate who's done playing nice. Makes it a bit easier to justify sticking with the Brotherhood and I think power armor/melee/heavy weapons is actually pretty fun in this.

I have an unfortunate issue, that forces me to disable Survival mode when I get to level 50+, where the higher level I get the more likely it is for my game to freeze. The issue is limited specifically to Survival mode, and it really starts to get exponentially bad the higher level I get. To the point where VATS and transition loading screens are a gamble.

Most UA-camrs cover the vanilla game, which I haven't been interested in since early 2016. I get why they do it; it's the largest share of the game's potential audience. It is still the least interesting aspect of the game as I enjoy it. I enjoy Fallout 4 like I enjoyed Legos as a child. As a box of possibilities. Those possibilities are unlocked with mods, and my preference is for large quest and gameplay mods with original stories, characters, assets and voice actors (SS2, Fallout London, et cetera). It's the difference between jamming out to Metallica or Taylor Swift and starting your own punk/garage band.
I've argued with friends who are UA-camrs who insist that they prefer the vision of the actual developers over unpaid amateurs/modders. I've never convinced anyone, but they haven't convinced me either. I love modding for the same reason I love a great YT channel: In a world of makers and users I prefer DIY.
I'm happy you exist and I enjoy your perspective. Stay punk AF.

I think the biggest problem with Fallout 4, obviously the story, is it felt like they wrote the entire story for Fallout 4 before developing the game. Then tried to develop the game around that story, and give the player illusion of choice. However, the illusion of choice is blatantly obvious after playing and you didn't have a choice. While with a game like Fallout: New Vegas, it felt like they started with the factions, wrote the entire story with each faction, and then mixed things here or there. So while there is still some illusion of choice it's less obvious.

When it comes to the Evolution of V.A.T.S. : in F76 it became pretty much an aimbot.
I don't know if they changed it by now, but last time i played (roughly half a year ago) it still was this way:
When you activate the System it autosnaps to the target nearest to your crosshair and with the right perks let's you autosnap to specific bodyparts (like the head or Fusion core) without hindering your movement.
Only Downside is that the Hitchance is Statbased (but you can push those so high it doesn't rly matter) and that each shot costs AP which, with the right Gear and Perksetup becomes a nonissue too.
Once you set your perks up and got the right gear, you can just hold activate vats, hold down the mousebutton and watch your crosshair snap around until everything is dead or you ran out of ammo.

They just have boring quests, boring characters except that one older lady, and are ultimately overshadowed by the Institute, BoS and Railroad which have their own problems but at least they have some flavor.

It's annoying that Bethesda could have fundamentally changed the entire story for the better with just one caveat. Make the player a synth. The twist being that Sean created a synth in the exact image of his father, implanted it with memories ect. and sent it out there to see if it would seek it's "child" on it's own accord and how. This would turn the story into a Blade Runner esque "what really makes us human" and would even explain some of the downright silly encounters like the infamous child in the fridge. All those things are planted by the institute to see how this advanced synth would react and if it would deviate from it's goal. Wouldn't have turned the game into a milestone in writing but would've made it way more engaging imo

Aside from the issues that had been identified, my main qualm is how inconsistent some of the plot/storylines/quests are just because of either laziness or because of poor writing. I personally want to go with poor writing.
I love the quest to turn Curie into a "human" synth, from a Mister Handy robot.
But for some stupid reason, you can't do it for other robots, even worst, not even for robobrain bots.
I'm sure there are some lame excuse for this, from either the writers or some lame reasons from the hardcore fans, but I really wished that I could have my Codsworth or Ada as a "human" synth.
At least make it a simple optional questline, otherwise, it just feels so inconsistent.
Even if it's a matter of not important enough to make it at launch, just do it over patches.
I just want Codsworth to be the Alfred to my Batman.

I also never got into the settlement DLC with the contraptions and such. But I enjoyed Automaton, but wished they would not have reused Mechanist and Antagonizer from FO3. But the story was intersting. Far Harbor was Shivering Isles and DragonBorn levels of Bethesda Quality story telling.

Is right to say that the main quest and the factions of the base game are really bad (but Brotherood of steel are really cool), but i also think that the main quest is bad in almost every Bethesda games (maybe only in Morrowind is a little better).

Its by far the weakest fallout, may not buy the next one as a result. The attemp to turn it into a colony sim is not what i want from fallout. The repeat quest that make up the majority of the game are ass, and there are less than 20 actual sidequests with actual storylines. Main quest is actually kinda good. The new way they handle level progression is ass. Weapon selection is boring as hell.

Nee Vegas is also afraid to let you commit to a faction until a certain point, I don't know why people don't talk about this. Once you reach the Lucky 38, all factions forgive everything you ever did to them so the player can change their mind if they wanted.

Probably the best game mechanics as a fallout game.
    Story is meh.

Then you don't care about story or dialogue (which are quite important in rpgs), because if it was the case, your opinion would have changed

You're free to believe what you want, but there are some serious shortcomings to the writing and pacing of Fallout 4. New Vegas isn't perfect, but it follows more of a "because of this, then" rather than the "and then" way of writing the modern Bethesda keeps using. It makes the world and story make more logical sense and flow better imo.
