Despite some slight time mis-management here, Anatoly Karpov showed his understanding of the position once again.. Considering he's 70 already, I think he played very well, which is a feat by itself. The only other players, that could do the same (and did) and that I can think of, were Vasily Smyslov and Viktor Korchnoi.
I can't help but admire the great Anatoly Karpov and his long-lasting level of mastery of chess.
But also thumbs up for the 'enigmatic' opponent, who did not play too badly at all.

This is possibly an interesting example of crystal v fluid intelligence. Karpov's time trouble, like Kasparov in a recent tournament, suggests the loss of fluid intelligence, or processing speed to access and execute the knowledge. However, each of them has more crystal intelligence in chess, or memory, than 0.000...1% of any opponents they might face. Crystal intelligence does fade, like a worn memory card over time. At least, that is the way I remember it. Interesting game. Of course, GM Karpov, is a gentleman and may just be playing along.

  • @ALandarion

As some points, like at Ra2 - Karpov was smiling as if he has seen a win but didn't want to crush Rey right away.
Also at Qg3-Kf4; Rf3 - Karpov was smiling as if "This was your chance".
Around the Karpov's King movement in the end game they started to play very fast, but at the clock Karpov had around 40 seconds, and Rey had around 20 seconds. There is no way Karpov would lose on time with such an advantage.
It was all either staged, or heavily edited for the show.

Well, mr. Karpov is older, he's 70, it's more difficult for him to have such reaction and speed. However his age makes his current level and understanding of the game even more impressive and inspiring.

@Jasper Percabeth How tf is chess a drowning ship? It's never been this popular, we just had the WCC, the SCC (Ding-Hikaru match was the most exciting thing I've seen all year), the candidates tournament, Norway chess, World cup, Grand Prix, and in a week we'll have the World rapid and blitz championships, along with many more exciting online tournaments (MC tour) and the GCT. What's your point exactly?

Wow…amazing game and amazing job by you of giving us a blow by blow, a jugada por jugada, “reenactment” of the game between Karpov and Enigma, I happen to be a fan and a subscriber of both your UA-cam channel as well as as Rey Enigma’s channel, I really enjoy both his and your “energy and enthusiasm” for the game, as well of how you and Enigma, explain the game in a way that a “casual play at lunch time at work with my friends and online with people around my ranking” can follow and understand. Thank you for what you now do. Watching your channel made start playing again this game I love but had not played for many years. I’m also now teaching the game to my little grandson so that we’ll also have that connection, which is pretty cool. Thanks again.

Karpov was always superior to Kasparov at Middlegames and Endgames. Kasparov was better at opennings. I don't know why people don't consider Karpov the GOAT when he is the most achieved player in the history of chess(160+ times 1st in tournaments).
