Grand Cherokee OWNERS: Replace the "lifetime" filter and fluid in your ZF 8HP Transmission Part 2

    This is part 2 of the ZF 8HP Transmission Fluid and Filter Change on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is the 8HP70 for the Hemi, but that variant shouldn't matter as it's the 8HP that the same.
    I tear into the procedure learning and overcoming obstacles as they come as there's no video showing how to do so on the Grand Cherokee. I included links below to the products I purchased for this service, the rest of the tools I used were things I had already acquired along the road.
    You will need the following tools:
    13mm socket
    15mm deep socket
    8mm male hex socket
    10mm male hex socket
    T40 Torx socket
    3" or so socket extension
    Socket wrench
    Breaker bar
    Impact Driver (optional to speed up process)

    You made a lot of mistskes in your fill procedures. The truck should not be leaning to the left. When you fill it cold it should only take about 2 and half quarts and start to run out, put the plug in. Then you start it and go through P,R,N,D 5 seconds each. Then while in drive with the wheels off the ground slowly take your foot off the brake accelerate to get into second gear hold 2nd gear for 5 seconds. Shift back to park rev to 2000 RPM hold for 5 seconds. With the truck still running, go back underneath pull the plug. Add more fluid if none runs out. Add fluid until it runs out and let it slow to a dribble. Put the plug back in. Go back in the truck go through the gear 5 second procedure again. Now you can leave it on jacket stands running until it gets up to about 175 degrees trans temp (will take an hour plus if it's cool outside) so the bypass vavle opens or you can jack it down and go for a drive to get it up to temperature. Once it gets up pass 175 trans temp. Let it cool all the way back down (overnight or several hours). Then start the vehicle let the trans temperature reach between 88 and 122 degrees. Pull the trans plug again if fluid runs out let it get to a dribble put the plug in your done. If it doesn't run out add more until it does run out let it get to a dribble put the plug in your done. This is the correct way to do the fluid check. The vehicle should be level left to right and front to back. The transmission does not need to be level the vehicle does. That came straight from ZF. Ask yourself if a dealer did this how would they use a lift and have the back higher than the front or the vehicle leaning to the left on a lift. Hope this helps everyone.

      The transmission felt better than it did after I bought it 40k miles earlier so it seems all of the mistakes you pointed out that I made didn’t really add up to anything. Thank you for your explanation though.

      It says to have the transmission level not the vehicle.

      @johnsn10 So explain how a dealership or transmission shop would do that on a car lift 🙄? What I said is correct watch the video from the transmission manufacturer that's on UA-cam. No one is leaning the vehicle or leveling the transmission. Being taken way to literal by people that don't know what they are doing.

      How many jack stands should I have under my car? I have (2) 3 Ton Jack Stands, and 2 Car Jack's.
      My car's front wheels are currently on 2 ramps.
      Will the 2 stands plus 2 Jack's be safe to run through the gears with the car off of ground?

      ​@ZxSkyLineKidxZ You really need 4 jack stands because you need to be able to go under the truck to check the fluid. Not really safe to go under the trick on just jacks alone. And you can't use the ramps because it's all wheel drive so all the wheels have to be off the ground. See if a friend has two stands you can barrow if you don't want to buy more.

    adding a note. for first-timers it's better to measure what came out first, then put the same amount of fluid back. assuming that there are no previous fluid leaks in the trans. later in about 1 week do it again because not all fluid comes out when removing the trans pan. around half of the fluid remains inside the torque and internal parts of the trans. eventually, the majority of fluid will be replaced in two shots easier rather than complicate your 1hr job. and yes keep your car elevated some how leveled.

    Great video. Thanks for posting. Some cheap wobble extensions from Home Depot or Harbor Freight might be a worthwhile purchase for anyone else looking to do this. Great idea using the pump sprayer over a more professional type tool that does the same thing for a lot more money. I have one and honestly it just sits around collecting dust now. The pump sprayer actually looks more convenient. Cutting the nozzle off the tip so itll fully insert into the fill opening, and using a heat gun to bend a 45 or 90 a few inches down from the tip of that wand (to keep everything away from the exhaust) seems like a good 2 minute investment for future. I just picked up a 2019 Limited so I’m trying to learn all the maintenance before i need to do anything. This was a big help, Thank you.

    One thing to remember is 8.7 quarts is the capacity of the entire system... when you drain and remove pan you only get out about 4 quarts... the oil left in the cooling lines and torque converter remains...

      I had jeep dealer service do it for me and they only used 3 quarts out of 9 I left them. Should I be worried or is is possible that it only drained 3 quarts?
      Than, even if it was 4, now I see why they say it’s filled for life. You won’t change that fluid unless you take off the transmission. What’s the point of just mixing some old fluid with some new. If I knew that I wouldn’t bother.

      @@jacekmadej34 that means they only did a drain and fill.... the entire system holds 8.7 liters but when you drain just the pan... your not getting the fluid out of the torque converter or cooling lines.... ect. I wouldn't be "worried" about that but be aware that it's not all the fluid. The bigger question is did the dealership put a new pan on (which is where the filter is) and IMO is important to change.       You make good points. I will say though the fluid does get dirty and the magnets in the pan do catch impurities so replacing the pan/filter makes a lot of sense. And since some fluid is drained to drop the pan, might as well replace the fluid that came out so it’s more fresh than just putting the old stuff back in.

    Hi, the bypass valve is an important part of the oil level check procedure, which usually is a part of the documentation of the delivered by ZF oil pan. What you did is only a filling in procedure, but not the oil level check one. ZF recommends to change the oil between 80-100.000 km (not miles) or 8 years, which occures first. The bypass valve opens at 75°C and than you should proceed with a similar procedure like the one described in the filling in one. After the first change at 80.000-100.000 km it is better to refresh it after 50.000 by changing the pan incl. The filter.

      I read this too, but I've seen several people (commenting on Ram trucks, which I would presume have the same design as this Jeep for our purposes) use a 3-way bypass valve, which means there is always some fluid in the cooler, and we don't have to worry about this step. I haven't confirmed this, though several have said it. If true, it could explain why this step is omitted from the Chrysler procedure (of course, ineptitude is equally likely, so it's why I'm still looking for clarity)

    Jeep GC has a thermostat on the transmission lines, after the initial fill and level check, I recheck the fluid level after running the trans to full operating temp 190, the following day ill put it on jack stands again and run another level check, typically find it needs another 1/2 quart on the final check.

      Bypass opens at 160 degrees let it run until it hits that temp on jack stands then shut it down and wait until the next morning and restart it let it get into the check temp range and add more fluid until it runs out and slows to a dribble.

      Hey man! It’s a Frankenstein if I’m honest. Took it to a muffler shop for some work and after several visits changing it around, I settled with 8” cherry bombs before an x-pipe where the suitcase muffler was, and thrush turbo mufflers in the back where the stock resonators were with 5” burnt tips out the bumper. Looks nasty, not as nasty sounding as I want. I want to change it up but need to prioritize my projects around.

      Off hand, I am not entire sure. I think the german measurement of Gudentite (good and tight) will be sufficient. Removing the fill plug was definitely a chore so I don't believe it's a small amount of torque.

    When I do a transmission service I always measure what I drained out and only put that amount back in and then check it to see if it's full, just a tip. Good videos!

    Pretty sure that capacity of fluid is if you had to fill all lines and the torque converter. Those do not drain by simply dropping the pan

    Cool video! I have 2012 Grand Cherokee V6 without a dipstick and need to figure out how to add transmission fluid to it. Hopefully easier than this.

      This trans, I wish they included a dipstick. But you’re going to need to perform the whole circus act I encountered with the fluid at temp, the various steps of gear selections and engine speed, and then check level. It’s rough for sure but it beats paying the stealership at $150+/hr. Woof.

      Yeah, the W5A580 transmission and there is a place for a dipstick! What scan tool did you use to get ATF temp?

      My GC has the upgraded EVIC so it displays there. Yours might also, but it’s the smaller display. If not give any reputable Bluetooth OBD2 scanner a try from Amazon, I like BlueDriver and it’s matching app, and download an app like OBD Fusion which can pull your temp among many other live stats.

    The missing step from every video I've seen so far is that the trans pan needs to be level for proper fill. The rear end will need to be lifted. There is also the fact that 9.5qt is total system capacity as others have mentioned.

      The rear end was lifted, and it was close to the front, but I'm pretty sure the whole vehicle wasn't level so I may be running a little too much or too little. Haven't had any problems since I did the job so fingers crossed!

      I called ZF and spoke with a tech. He told me, if your car or truck is sitting on level ground, it is in fact level for the transmission fluid level check procedure.

      It took about 5 quarts to fill it. They sell 6 quart packs online so I'd suggest going that route and keep any left over as backup if you need to top off down the road sometime.

    My understanding is that Mopar uses a bypass valve that never allows the cooler to be empty. Haven't been able to confirm this, but the concern of the guy in that other video may be addressed by the design. Second point is that I don't think you ever will get all 8 quarts drained unless you did a flush (which ZF doesn't advise). The torque converter is going to hold onto some of the oil - 5 - 6 quarts is about what I've heard. Did you measure what came out to compare against what went in?

      I went with replica WK SRT wheels in black, 20x9 and the tires are Nitto Terra Grappler G2's, OEM size.

      The pan comes with a gasket but I didn’t realize until it arrived. I had also ordered a gasket separately but ended up returning it as it was not needed.

    What is that big secret reason behind Jeep saying this is a lifetime oil , no need for servicing, and ZF the manufacturer of the transmission saying it rather needs oil change at 100.000 km? Did Jeep add any special additive to the transmission oil that allows it last forever ?

      I think it's more of marketing terminology. What is considered lifetime? I think when they say "Lifetime," they mean for the life you own the vehicle from new, so like up to 80k-100k miles. I'm guessing, I could be wrong though. I don't believe there's anything special they've added to the fluid.

      Your best bet is if you are receiving this code, is to bring it to a reputable dealer or trustworthy shop to get the vehicle looked over. A quick look online and it appears it could be any number of issues to cause the P1DC7-00 code to be thrown. Good luck!

    ive heard you never get all the fluid out when draining. i did that on my 88 jeep cherokee . i drained it and put back what was required , and test drove it, i blew fluid out the dip stick . live and learn made a real mess on the engine

    Hi im no mechanic and i have some doubts i have a grand cherokee laredo 2015 and the trasmission cooler is leaking trasmission oil and the mechanic said that he has to empty the a/c gas so he can remove the old transmission cooler?

      Yes that is actually correct. The A/C condenser doubles as the transmission cooler so in order to fix the transmission cooler leak, the refrigerant needs to be removed from the system so the condenser/cooler can be replaced.

      Yes you can, but I figure if you are going to spend the money, you might as well replace the filter as well to extend the life of the fluid you just spent a lot on the expensive fluid.

      It was a pain but I’m happy to do the exploratory work and share my experience so others hesitant to do the work know what to expect, and then make the judgment call to do the work themselves or to have someone else do it. I’m just an average dude that’s very capable who likes doing diy jobs and sharing what I learned. I love my 2014 too, it’s the vehicle I’ve owned the longest out of all of my vehicles and I haven’t thought once about getting rid of it. She’s a pain and needs work but I love wrenching and it’s match made in heaven lol. If anything I will keep add a two door rwd sports car and keep this as a daily that I’ll probably supercharge lol.

    How often to change the transmission fluid?

      It really all depends on driving style. If you are hard on your vehicle, you will want to change it sooner, but if you are easier on it, you can go longer. The transmission manufacturer states it should be changed 80,000 miles (I believe 80k miles, it's been a bit since I have looked it up) but it could have been 80,000 kilometers or less.

    Do you recall how much fluid you took out? I am just curious because my fluid leaked out and I added some, pretty much the same way you did. Just not sure how much fluid was lost. It drive fine except it didn’t shift to 3rd when accelerating full throttle this one time and down shifting is more noticeable.

      I don't remember how much fluid came out exactly but I may still have the bottles I used to store the old fluid, I will check later today. It was somewhere around 4-5 quarts that came out though.

    Has anyone who’s ever done the oil change in the pan change on this eight speed automatic experience slipping even though you know you have the proper fluid levels at the proper temperature? Thank you in advance

      This seems like there may be an underlying issue that is unrelated to the fluid. Is the slipping happening in all “gears?” If so it could be something with the torque converter. It could even be the clutch’s inside the trans handling each speed. Definitely something worth investigating some more. Good luck!!

      Everyone seems to make this mistake, the PAN needs to be level but the truck. If you have the truck level the actual pan isn’t which causes you to be about a quart under. Tons of people have had this exact issue, leveled the pan which basically means jacking the rear up 10” while leaving the nose on the floor and then adding more.

      ​@stevehenaire742 This is wrong no shop is doing that. The vehicle just has to be level. How would a shop do that on a lift, it's going to make the truck level not the transmission. ZF says the vehicle has to be level. His truck in this video should not be leaning to the left to fill it makes the checks inaccurate.

      The filter is build into the pan, which is kind of annoying if you ask me since you need to drop the pan and replace it. I'm sure some company out there has made a pan where you can change just the filter but that would certainly not be stock.

      Hi there! I did this work around 105,000 miles which is about 168,000 km plus or minus a bit. I included links in the description of the video, I got them from Amazon since the prices were pretty reasonable and delivered to me at no cost. As far as how it drives, it feels great! I’d say it feels no different that it did prior to the change but it’s peace of mind knowing it’s got cleaner fluid in the system with a fresh filter.

      @@user-fk2oo7ne5n honestly I doesn’t feel any different than it did before I did this work. No slipping at all in any gear. Changing the fluid and filter may help but if not then you may be facing another underlying issue unrelated to the fluid, like the torque converter going or the clutch pack prematurely wearing.

    Hey, mine is leaking oil, i can see oil on the bottom part of the an. Would you recommend change the whole pan and gasket or just the gasket?

      If you are certain it's not a leak from somewhere else, then the gasket is bad. Considering the job in its entirety, I would suggest replacing the pan because it has a new seal and it has a new filter. Might as well do it all while it's all apart is the way most would look at it. And replace the fluid too. Basically, do what I did haha.

      It probably wouldn’t hurt to change the filter/pan each time the fluid is changed, but realistically, you’re not doing this often, maybe only once while you own the vehicle unless you keep it forever and continue to drive it over the maintenance intervals.

      I would say that whatever came out, that same amount should go back in. So it 5.2 L came out, then 5.2 L should go back in.

      I was noticing a slight audible “zipping” sound like gears turning in a transmission. Who would have thought? Well, automatics don’t really have gears like manual transmissions do, I’m very familiar with a whiny transmission from my ‘05 sti with an upgraded transmission mount and trans cross member bushings. That 6 speed was looouuud and awesome. But what I heard was much more faint than my sti but I still heard it and shouldn’t have considering auto trans’ like the ZF 8HP use planetary gears and for the most part the whole unit should be silent. I spent some time researching and decided I wanted to change it and with no video online explaining how to do it, I decided to make an exploratory DIY video while I did the work. And that my friend is why I changed it. I hope that helps!

    When running through the process inside the car, was it on the stands the whole time??
    In drive, 2nd gear at 2k for 10 seconds - how did the car go on the stands??

      Yup! It was on jack stands the whole time I ran through the gear selector procedure. It ran fine on the stands, with the traction control light off, the wheels turned with no issue and no codes were thrown from it.

    PPE makes an aluminum replacement pan that has a replacement filter. $300

      A pan with a replacement filter is a good idea. When I found out I had to replace the whole pan because of a non-replaceable filter, I was shocked. Though, you need to wager how often you want to replace the filter, given they are good for 80k-ish miles, the 2nd filter replacement will be your breakeven but will ever get to that point? Just something to consider.

    in your opening sequence when you opened your fill plug too much fluid came out, so that was indicative of not having the vehicle level like the instructions want. you can't totally get these transmissions to drain so only putting in 6 quarts sounds about right, torque converter etc was still full, along with the cooling system.

      I didn't realize it at the time but I believe the 3.6 6cyl uses a different transmission than what the 8cyl uses.

You never know how qualified the dealership is nor do you know how expensive the parts & labor are until you get the final bill from them. I try to do as much of the maintenance as I can but I'm not getting younger and sometimes I just don't have the strength I had when I was 20. :)

    Dealership wants $1,000 for a transmission fluid and filter change. That was 5 years ago. Probably $1,200 now.

      The dealer may perform a flush rather than a drain, fill and replace so there's probably some additional value to their service but that is still a steep price for sure.

    Just drain it, measure the oil amount and install same amount of new..do every 30k. No need to replace the pan.

      Yup, I had replaced it after I did this service. I didn’t have the time or chance to record that job but it was easy. No more than 45 minutes and that job was complete.

    1 issue I see here is that you're incorporating some air bubbles into the trans fluid with your garden sprayer. I personally would figure a way to put Air pressure in the tank with out using the pump. Maybe an air chuck & a regulator set to vary low pressure. Instead of adding air below the fluid level.

      This is a good point. It didn’t issue to me at the time about the air bubbles. I’m sure it’s not something to be too concerned about, if bubbles are introduced to the fluid, they will rise (albeit slowly), and where the pick up tube for the sprayer’s wand is all the way at the bottom of the tank, there’s probably not a lot of bubbles being introduced into the transmission while it’s being pumped up there.

      You don't have to if you're doing a basic transmission service. Transmission service involves changing the filter and refilling the pan. A transmission flush is what you're referring to.
