I had this in the 1990s and went to the podiatrist and he made me cookies - this is basically a soft arch support that's taped to the feet. This was helpful but I couldn't take it off or I'd have to go back and get another one at the doctors. He measured me for orthotics which were $200 each and weren't covered by insurance and they would take a month to make. So I canceled the orthotics and made my own for a few bucks. These decreased the pain considerably but didn't cure it. What cured it was a night splint which I made from parts from Home Depot. You can buy these at drug stores these days. What I did to keep it away was to get good shoes and keep track of the usage (which a lot of people do today but was difficult in the 1990s), and stretch. I have very strong calves from tennis. The main cause, from what I can tell, is using worn shoes for running and tennis.

Guys, I have a serious question. Genetically, I’ve had incredible calves and the comments I’ve received on them is great. I train them once, the odd time twice a week, two sets to failure. I’ve been working wildland fire for the past 5 years but usually seasonally for 4-5 months at a time. This year, I’ve been dealing with pretty gnarly plantar fasciitis in my right foot. The calf muscles in the lower grainy (soleus) muscles are excruciatingly tight when I massage them. I’ve always had tight calves and wonder if this could have caused my plantar fasciitis. Could be the work boots I wear 12 hours a day in the forest. But I’ve not experienced this before. Also, I’ve maybe been averaging 6 hours of sleep a night for the past 3 months due to the extreme fires this year, so I know this also just adds to what you guys said.
Is it possible the calves are the cause and not the result??
I just finished my season today and am looking into ways to remedy and rid this problem. I know with time it’ll happen but it’s certainly getting in the way of my enjoyment in activities.
