- We cruise our NARROWBOAT floating home along the Stourbridge Canal, but there’s a problem!
Everything is a struggle, the water is too low … passing boats, mooring up, and general cruising, although very pretty, is just too much … we had to GIVE UP!
But then, NEW WATERS and WOW! You will be amazed! 😍
Hope you enjoy this video 😃 xx

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have you all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a few playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises, one of our River Nene adventures, and the other is all our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

What a wonderful video. It felt like we were right there with you. Thanks for all the work you do to make these videos.
Aww what lovely words, you’re very welcome, it’s lovely to have you onboard! Thank you! xx
Such beautiful scenery on that last part of the canal. What a contrast it was to the earlier stretch with the low water levels and all that green algae. Great vlog as always Julie. xx
Hi Phyllis, hope you’re both well! Yes, that second canal was just breathtaking, a proper feast for the eyes! Just beautiful! Have a lovely weekend! xx
Hi Julie & Martin. It is me again. When you said you were not sure what birds you could hear, are you aware of an app called Merlin? When you download that, and either a UK, or UK & Europe database you can record the birdsong, and it will tell you what bird, or bids you are hearing.
Hi Alan, yes thanks for this, we do have the Merlin App, I just didn’t have my phone handy at the time, I should keep it ready at all times! Thanks Alan! xx
You are spoiling us with all that gorgeousness everywhere! The views from the water are something else! Brilliant to see those old bridges and buildings. So sad they are not used anymore. It would make for great artist studios or music halls, or shelters. Have a great weekend! ❤❤
Hi Eric! Yes those canals were just spectacular weren’t they, a feast for the eyes! Thank you so much and have a lovely weekend! xx
@ i love how you eye captures things like reflections and compositions, esp from the bow camera. Always a treat to watch them! Have a great weekend!🥂
@@tteric67aww thank you Eric! xx
Hi guys, wow, just what I needed, I had a gig tonight, over 170KL trip there and back, just got home exhausted, jumped in the shower, lap top on and suddenly I'm cruising along in the stunning country side of England's beautiful canals. Those reflections and your chosen background music are heavenly. When I saw the horses🐴 I thought, wow the green algae is so thick the horses are walking on it....Then I realised it was grass... Hey I'm tired ok.😴🤣🤣Thank you again for sharing your lifestyle with us it's so calming and restful just what the DR ordered. Stay safe and I will see you on the next one. 👍🏻👍🏻❤❤
Hi Geoff, crikey 170KL that’s a long way! Glad you’re home and nicely relaxed. Thank you for your kind words, it’s nice to hear this feedback, thank you! xx
Was so afraid for your boat bottom. That water was so low. Some really beautiful scenery here. You capture it well. The water lilies are so pretty. Glad your water level stays better. Catch you next week. Stay safe.
Cindy in Oklahoma
Hi Cindy, yes it really was low, it was awful hearing the boat scraping along the bottom! But wasn’t that scenery gorgeous, it really was breathtaking! Glad you enjoyed it Cindy, have a lovely weekend! xx
Hey guys, I'm glad you got through the shallow parts of that canal .
Beautiful scenery 👌
Thanks matey, it was awful hearing and feeling the boat scraping along the bottom, but what a contrast to the Staffs & Worcester, it was just stunning! Hope you’re both well xx
You are right about breathtaking scenery! I couldn't get over how low the water level was on the Stourbridge Canal. It was scary hearing the boat scrape bottom! The water was so calm on the Strattfordshire/Worcheshire Canal and the reflections were incredible!
Yes, both canals were so beautiful, but what a difference in the water levels! Those leaky locks definitely had something to do with it, but wasn’t the scenery stunning! Thank you for your lovely comment Joyce! xx
Hi Martin & Julie,
WOW Absolutely stunning, the scenery, the reflections, just beautiful.
Have a fab weekend.
Hi Paul, it really was stunning, so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! xx
Here is a box, a musical box...Camblewick Green of course. Love your vlogs.
Aww we’re all showing our age aren’t we lol, those were the days eh! Glad you enjoyed it Carl! Thank you! xx
I am more of a Bill &Ben era and dare l say it Twizzle😮that puts me in the early man section 😂The Staffs &Worcs is a beautiful canal.
Hahaha we remember ‘watch with mother’ lol 😂 Yes the S&W is one of our favourite canals now, it’s just stunning! Thanks Anthony! xx
I have loved the shallow and the deep❤. Your work is greatly appreciated by me, the reflections and the scenery is just beautiful definitely breath taking!
Julie & Martin despite the low water you had to deal with this is some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen reminds me of a Monet panting the colors are breathtaking! Enjoy and safe travels 😊
It really was breathtaking Lisa, so glad you thought so too! Thank you for your lovely comment Lisa, it’s so nice to hear! xx
Beautiful scenery along the Staffordshire, but would love to see a bit of “home life”! Meal prepping, etc! Life generally apart from cruising! Great video.
Hi Liz, yes, we must remember to switch the camera on a bit more indoors, I promise we will. We are a few weeks behind, but I will make a conscious effort to do more moving forward 😃 Thanks Liz! xx
The low water level must make for pretty tricky cruising. It must be awful feeling your bottom scraping along the canal...! 😖 But then a beautiful cruise later on. Beautiful scenery, beautifully captured Julie. Thanks guys. Cheers.
stunning scenery. but I still find it so sad to see all those beautiful old bridges with Graffiti on them. even the war veterans memorial
Yes it’s such a shame, such disrespect 😔 Thank you Trevor! Xx
Wow v shallow. We had the same sort of issues on the South Oxford around Fenny Compton which I know is known about but it still makes it hard going sometimes (and a bit scary when get stuck and tipping!!).
All the best to you both. Kerry, Colin and Alfie. NB Time to Pootle xx
Yes, it’s awful hearing and feeling it scraping along the bottom, but the scenery on the Staffs & Worcester was well worth it! xx
I love your vlogs and when you laugh it makes me laugh its very infectious 😅
Aww thank you, no-one has ever said that before, thank you Janice! xx
Another fabulous video, the scenery was so beautiful it was like it had been done using CGI. Thank you again for taking me on your journey, I’m so glad that there was no damage to the boat when you were in shallow waters. Take care. x
Thank you Susan, what lovely words! It really was breathtaking, I just didn’t have enough words to describe it, just breathtaking! Thanks Susan! xx
Amazing reflections and scenery on this one! Glad you made it through the shallow canal, it sure was worth it. 🤗❤️
Oh it really was worth it, although it was awful hearing the boat scraping along the bottom, but some of those reflections were just amazing! Have a lovely weekend Donna! xx
Truly is nature in all its glory. Magnificent
Aww thanks Jackie, wasn’t it glorious! xx
That canal gives a whole new meaning to the phrase green mile! Thankfully no submerged tree limbs or other snaggy things.
Yes, that would have been a great title for the video! Thanks Norman glad you liked it! xx
What a shame you couldn’t moor up for a while, it looked really lovely there. It would have been nice for you both. Cup of tea and a slice of cake, put you feet up for a while.
🤠👍👍I still love the sense of community on the cut, the same red neck type of people I know, no matter what a hurry you're in you'll pause and make sure your neighbor is able to continue on his way👍💯
Yes, we love the boating community for exactly that, we love this community spirit! Thank you Marty! xx
Hi julie and martin another great vlog some stunning scenery me and my wife jen are thinking about getting a narrowboat its not quite the right time for us but nearly, and one of the reasons we are getting one is because of your vlogs showing us basicly all the ins and outs of boating from the scenery to maintinance with martin, lock info places to visit and so much more so we hope to see you on the cut one day👍
Oh this is lovely to hear, thank you! And so exciting for you, please keep us posted and yes, one day we’ll meet up on the cut and have a cuppa or something stronger! 😜 xx
Hay Julie and Martin, such a wonderful video this week. Goodness me that section of canal really was low and so much duck weed in places it looked like grass! Hopefully you are having a fantastic week, it’s going to be a cold weekend and sleet on Tuesday if the forecast is to be believed that is. Hope you have a brilliant weekend, love of love and best wishes as always
Hi Edward! Yes, if really was so low, we were so pleased to get to new waters! We’re watching the forecast, really love snow, perhaps a little early for it though lol. Keep warm Edward! xx
Beautiful cruise despite water levels. Made my evening so chilled out 🙏
Aww that’s great, so pleased you enjoyed it, the scenery was just spectacular! Thanks Trevor! xx
My Eloise and I have been to Stourbridge back in 1989. We use to own and operate an industrial combustion and refrigeration company. Some of the products we represented in the US manufactured in the UK were Nu-way burner (Droitwich), and ComTherm Burner company. We are familiar with the John Bradley & Co located in Stourbridge and their legacy. It was so wonderful to see the old Warf entrance to the John Bradley Foundry. Historical. Wonderful part of history that still stands.
Oh wow! Thank you for that info and how lovely you have those memories, I’m so glad I read that out now! Thank you so much Eloise & Bill! xx
Wow, what a stunning area. Scary how low the water was on the first canal - I’m guessing this was back in the summer and hopefully it’s filled again now. The reflections and colours were so clear - sometimes it was hard to see where the canal went as it seemed you were heading into a beautiful painting or photograph. Great video as always - particularly enjoyed the Windy Miller impression Martin! Have a wonderful weekend xx
Hi Mishka, yes the canal was so low we could hear and feel it scraping on the bottom! But wasn’t that scenery stunning, we absolutely loved it! Lol, we were showing our ages with that impression lol 😂 Thanks Mishka! xx
good filming julie its amazing there it takes mre right back its a magic place it all ways has been
It really is beautiful! xx
Really nice area of the Canal Network, perfectly shown with your brilliant videography!! Well done.
Thank you so much, it really was stunning, thank you for the lovely compliment! xx
Another lovely video, you certainly get the best weather ! We did that exact cruise from Stourbridge in our friends boat but went down to Kinver. They can get down to Kinver and back in a day from Stourbridge, and do it at the weekends when they can.
We held our wedding reception at Stourton village hall in 1977 !! Ooh memories, thank you ❤
Aww so glad this bought back memories for you, it certainly was a beautiful cruise! Thanks Gail! xx
Hi Julie & Martin! As usual, another gret vlog. Stay safe, and keep them coming.
Aww thank you so much, that’s lovely to hear! Have a lovely weekend! xx
Wow what absolutely amazing views on this water once you got on the other canal ,think this is the best stretch of canal yet ❤
Yes, think this is one of our favourites! Thank you Barbara! xx
Wow! That was spectacular, so calming (despite the low water), so beautiful and a delight to see. 😊 thank you for sharing 😊
You’re welcome Dave, so pleased you enjoyed it and thank you for your lovely comment! xx
The canal looks like glass, so smooth and still! Awesome scenery guys! 👌🏾
It was gorgeous wasn’t it! Thanks Randy! xx
From the title I thought you were giving up boating, shock horror.
So glad to hear you laughing.
Well done for getting as far as you did.
Scenery looked stunning. Once you got onto the Stafford canal.
Good to know you are both okay. Thanks for sharing.
Take care and stay safe.
See you on the next one.
ATB to you both. 😊x
Oh good lord no! We love living on the water, we didn’t mean to give that impression sorry!
This cruise really was stunning, it’s such a shame we couldn’t get moored along the first stretch, but it really was so shallow we just couldn’t get near the bank! Thank you Yvonne for your lovely comments! xx
It is a lovely cruise but there is lots of green on the water and water being so low it must be hard for you but do love your vlogs all the best 👍
Hi Terrence, it was quite a struggle on that first canal, but the scenery made it all worthwhile! So pleased you enjoy our vlogs, it’s lovely to have you onboard! Thank you! xx
Great vlog Julie and Windy Miller
Lol, that made us chuckle!🤭 Thanks David & Ruth, glad you liked it! xx
The struggle paid off !! Some really pretty scenery after the locks. I enjoyed the journey as usual!!
Aww so pleased you did, the scenery along there was just stunning! Thank you for your lovely comment! xx
you would not think it would be low with all the rain we have had its strange why its so low .
Yes it’s very odd! Thanks Derek! xx
Great vlog guys. Windy miller, cambellwick green. Showing my age lol 😂 xx
Aww thank you Kathy! And yes, that’s the one lol, they don’t make kids TV like that anymore, those were the days! 🤪 Thanks Kathy! xx
it started with a music box opening and at the end closing.
That’s the one! We’re all big kids at heart aren’t we lol 😜 Thanks! xx
Thanks for videoing, great scenery. The reflections remind me if the time i spent in Scotland at this time of years about 6 years ago. Oh my. The views. Have a good week 🤗
Aww so glad it brought back your memories, wasn’t it just a stunning canal! Thank you! xx
I'm busy humming the theme tune of one of them, I think!
Hahaha 🤣 we’re all big kids at heart aren’t we! Thank you Liz! xx
Really beautiful area you traveled today.
It really was Bill, glad you liked it too! Thanks Bill xx

its always been good round there very nice place i have been there with my uncle many moons ago .its a very great view in places hope the boat did not get any damage
Aww lovely memories for you! No luckily the boat was ok, but thank you for the concern Derek! cc
Camberwick Green hasn't changed much 😂
Lol, that made us laugh! 😆 Thank you! xx
That gorgeous Triassic sandstone is why Wolverhampton is not in the Black Country! Where you were at the BCLM was once the Silurian Sea, which is why the area is full of fossils & is a UNESCO site. The geology then gave rise to the limestone [ from the sea creatures] & then the coal - which were needed for iron production. Coalbrookdale [ named on one of the bridges you passed under] was the birthplace of iron smelting. [Look up Abraham Darby if history is your ' thing', this area is chock full - and suprisingly pretty!] Near there is another Living Museum, much older than the BCLM, which is also worth a visit & the world famous Iron Bridge.
Oh wow, thank you so much for this info, that’s amazing! Wasn’t the canal scenery there fantastic! Thanks Debra! xx
Yes, absolutely stunning. Glad you liked the potted history!
Aww thanks again! xx
camplewick green or trumpton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hahaha, yes Camberwick Green! Lol 😂 Thank you! xx
That was a lovely but tough journey but how was it worth it in the end. I am going to watch again and get Merlin working to identify the birds. We think the program you were doing is camberwick green could be wrong 😂😂😂😂❤ 27:43
Yes, you’re right, we are a daft pair lol 😂 Glad you liked it, that canal was stunning! Thanks Jacqui! xx
great vlog cranking it on the cut on grea\t waters thanks lee
Thank you Lee, hope you’re well xx
I'd like an explanation from the CRT where all the water is going. The amount of rain we've had this summer the canals and reservoirs should be full to bursting. We see reported all the canals low, reservoirs low? feels like somethings not right.
Yes we know what you mean, however, they do have a winter maintenance programme that is just starting so think they will be dealing with some of the issues. On the CRT website, they have a new statement saying that they have listened to boater’s feedback and that they have put a lot of new things in place and made leaky locks and broken paddles a priority, so hopefully things will only get better! Thank you! xx
Another great vlog!! Thank you for taking the time to take us on your journeys every week. One thing that I miss... you used to put the date of your journey on the vlog. Can you do that again?
Hi Sheila, oh yes you’re right, I don’t know why I stopped doing that, sorry! I’ll put it back in from the next video! Thank you for your lovely comment and so glad you are enjoying our little videos! xx
@JulieandMartinonRIB oh thank you so much!

@@JulieandMartinonRIB me and julie want to say you make thursdatys special what do you over christmas do you rest or do you keep on going or do you spend time with family i was just wondering
@ we keep going and stay on the canals. We do see family too! xx
As usual the reflection queen strikes again, beautiful scenery that's Staffs and worcs canal looks stunning xx
Hi Nina, hahaha 🤣‘reflection queen’ lol, but wasn’t that scenery just stunning! Thank you for your lovely comment Nina! xx
It’s high time the CRT got their act together and cleared all the duck weed and repaired the leaking locks. It costs a lot of money to put a boat on the water nowadays and the CRT must start looking after their assets before people start leaving and cutting off the money supply. What would the shareholders think of that, not that they care as long as they’re getting their big fat dividends.
I am not an expert about this, but CRT is a charity rather than a company, so probably does not have shareholders. The issue is they are having to maintain things originally built hundreds of years ago, so, inevitably do not have enough money to do all that they need to do. Last year, or perhaps the year before, the government announced they would be cutting their grant to them, so the costs to canal users will have to rise greatly to help make up for the deficit. I think that the rules mea that continuous cruisers are particularly targeted, when it is them that keep the weed growth down. As the costs keep going up, it will put pressure on them to give up, and I can only see a dismal future for lots of these canals.
Hi Tom, as @groutmanalan has said, the CRT is a charity trust and they have had their gov grant hugely reduced. However, they have just issued a statement to all boaters that they are determined to make things better. They have pledged to repair and sort all lock gates and paddles and to generally keep the canals more maintained so as to keep boats moving. You can read it on their website called ‘Our Better Boating Plan’, so hopefully things are looking up! Hope you enjoyed this week’s video! xx
Hi Alan, yes we, as continuous cruisers are having to pay quite a bit more now and for the next 4 years, but hopefully things will pick up a bit now after their pledge in their latest statement! 🤞 Thanks Alan! xx
Has there been explanation as to why there has been so many issues with low water ? Here in the Midwest US we’ve had a terrible time with drought
No not really, but we think it was those leaky locks that were to blame. Hopefully the CRT will look at them over winter and sort it out, it’s not as if we haven’t had much rain lol! 😂 Thanks Sean! xx
Why don’t you carry a strimmer and you could tidy up to Moore where you prefer
Hi Veronica, we have a set of garden shears, however, it wasn’t vegetation that was the problem here, it was that the water was so low that we couldn’t get to the side to moor up! But you’re right, we have been thinking of getting a strimmer, perhaps for next Spring 👍 Thanks! xx
Trumpton? Camberwick green?
Lol, it was Camberwick Green! Thanks Liz! xx
The red tape people have to jump through if they want to purchase one of those buildings is silly. Planning permission etc,,, its like they would rather let them collapse than let someone save them. I understand they want to save the character of the buildings, but sometimes they ask to much and the cost, just doesn't make sense
Yes it’s such a shame, it’s lovely to see these reminders of the past, but sad to see them going to rack & ruin! Thanks Ade! xx
I don't see much evidence of fish in the canals. Is it a little inhospital for them or do I just not see the little rings they usually make in calm waters?
There usually are fishing the canals, but you will probably not see them in boating vlogs for two reasons. The first is that canal water is usually pretty opaque, because boat movements stir up the silt, so the water looks brown. The second is that the sounds, and turbulence of the propeller will make the fish move away. Canals will often contain roach, perch, tench & carp, and probably other species too. Unlike rivers, they do not usually contain runoff from land, roads, household runoff etc, which can contain all sorts of things bad for the environment.
Hi Celia, yes there are fish in the canals, it’s just that the water is often so murky that yo7 can’t see them. There’s often fishermen out along the canals. Thanks Celia! xx
Hi Alan, yes, although you do get run-offs from the land, I often film them, especially in rainy weather as sometimes there’s a torrent of water coming into the canals and yes you’re right, the water is often brown and yukky looking! Thanks Alan! xx
Your poor things. Please
Thanks! xx
