How To Keep SAFE in the LOCKS | A NEW View! | NARROWBOAT Living Ep122

- We take our NARROWBOAT floating home up the Bratch locks and show you a different view! Don’t get too CLOSE!! Bratch staircase locks …. or are they? The CRUISE to the locks the day before took us through 8 locks with some unusual bywashes 🤔 so pretty! We try to moor up, but have to move on further as it’s too shallow, we manage to moor but only just, only to see the perfect mooring the next day when we set off lol!
We explain how to stay safe when going UP in the locks!
Hope you enjoy this video 😃 xx

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have you all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a few playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises, one of our River Nene adventures, and the other is all our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

What a beautifully scenic canal, and a very unique experience for you viewing the lock from the front of the boat! Thank you for the detailed description of how the locks work, viewing it from your perspective is really helpful. Take care 🤗❤️
It was so lovely of the volunteer lockies to let me stay at the front of the boat instead of helping with the locks. It gave me a chance to see it up close, glad you liked it! Thanks Donna! xx
This canal is definitely one of our favourites Donna, and it was so lovely of the volunteer lockies to let me do that. It was a great way to see the water entering the lock and the difference in the ground paddles and gate paddles. Always good to hear you are still enjoying our videos! Thanks Donna! xx
Beautiful scenery along the canal and very dramatic footage from inside the lock Julie. I can see why you would have to be so careful about positioning your boat. Another very entertaining video. Thank you both.
Aww thank you Neil, always good to know you are still enjoying our videos! Have a lovely week! xx
Beautiful video ❣️❣️❣️
P.S. I'm sending anyone reading this all my love🥰💜🎣❣️❣️❣️
Aww thank you, have a lovely week! xx
Lovely, so relaxing before bed. Night night x
Aww thank you Gail, have a lovely weekend! xx
Brilliant blog. Fascinating to see inside the locks and so close to the gates. Thanks for great footage and thanks to the lockies for giving you the opportunity to show us this. Lovely scenery. Just what I needed to chill out after a hard week in the office ❤️❤️
It was a fun experience being that close to the water coming into the lock, but a great opportunity to see how it all works. So pleased you enjoyed it! Thanks Claire! xx
Well that one takes the biscuit it was brilliant. Two great lockies and splendid filming of the action, what an event for us at home, great idea, Julie
Aww thank you so much Nigel, so glad you enjoyed it! xx
I'm hoping that for Christmas you will get a lovely gift of 10k subscribers :) Your videos certainly brighten up my days :) Thank you Julie & Martin :)
Aww that would be lovely, we are getting close to that 10k milestone, like you say it would be a lovely present! Thank you so much! xx
Julie, I love the reflections on the canals, too! Maybe you should do a book of canal photography with bridges, pubs, wildlife, boats, people and more. It would be awesome to have. Thanks for another lovely vlog you two!
Hi Nancy, that’s a lovely idea, I may look into that! Thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIBI used to work in book and magazine publishing. You should see if there’s anything are any books already available like that first. Then do an outline of ideas. If you need any help let me know! I would love to buy a copy! 😊

Awesome Julie and Martin. It was interesting seeing just how the lock paddles work from that perspective.
Hi Randy, it was brilliant being able to see the water coming into the locks up close! Glad you enjoyed it! Have a lovely week! xx
Great vlog Guys, thank you. We enjoyed being with you in the locķs, that slime on the walls look awful, But no one ever says that it stinks, perhaps it doesn't. Stay safe 🙏 xx
Hi Glenn, thankfully it didn’t stink! Trust me I would have said if it did lol 😜 Glad you enjoyed being in the locks with us, it was a great experience, being that close to where the water enters the lock! Thanks Glenn! xx
Hi guys, the scenery just gets more and more beautiful as you travel. I had a chuckle at ROCKY LOCK because back in the late 70s when I worked at the General Motors Holden car plant as a spray painter, painting cars. The blokes decided I needed a nickname and Because they knew I was a musician, I was given the nickname around the factory as ROCKY. A few years ago we became parents of two beautiful rag doll cats, they are brother and sister with blue eyes and white and grey fur. We needed two names that ended in y or ie like Tammy or Gingie, past kids, as all of our cat have had names ending like that. So the boy is called Rocky and the girl is called Jazzy. So Rocky lives on.🤣🤣 Tom and Richard were nice chaps and it was a great idea filming the lock from the boats perspective. It reminded me of a ride in the Movie world theme park here in Aus called river rapids.🤣🤣 I always enjoy your videos so relaxing and entertaining. Stay safe guys. 👍🏻👍🏻❤❤
Hi Geoff, or should I say ‘Rocky’ 😜 really glad you enjoyed the ride inside the locks, it was a great experience and a good opportunity to show how the water enters the locks and where to place your boat to stay safe, something a little different eh! I just looked that breed of cat up, they look beautiful! Have a lovely weekend Geoff! xx

@@rocka-cb7kk we have a blizzard at the moment, it’s really cold outside, but toasty inside the boat! xx
Wow... that was incredible. Really showed the ground paddle, gate paddle difference. Thanks for the lesson!
You’re very welcome Karen, it was so nice of the volunteer lockies to let me film from the well-deck, a great experience for me and an ideal way to show you how the water enters the lock, so glad you enjoyed the ride too! Thank you so much Karen! xx
❤ your vlogs - great stress relievers- much needed of late. The "jigsaw" scenery❤💙 - although trying to solve a jigsaw of your canal scenes maybe not😂😏🤪
Do you stay on one moring for winter? Or move every two or so weeks? Watched another boater who is preparing for winter hence the ?
Thank you Jan Adelaide
P.S ❤ the glass museum with the narrowboat in the frame -postcard maybe? Great for the TV series to come?
Hi Jan, we are continuous cruisers so will continue all throughout the winter, moving every week or two, unless we get frozen in and then would need to stay longer lol. We quite enjoy the winter, a new set of challenges, ice, snow, freezing conditions, rain, wind etc, keeping stocked up on food and water, diesel for the engine and fire, and being able to empty our toilet lol, they’re all part of the adventure! You have some great ideas, thank you and have a lovely weekend! xx
Very good footage. Martin keeps the boat at exactly the right spot, presumably with some throttle to counteract the force of the incoming deluge, while also ensuring not being pushed back too far and risking hooking onto the back gates. It was very helpful to have long locks in the staircase. The driver is constantly monitoring the flow & adjusting the throttle accordingly - no sitting back & relaxing or nipping inside for a comfort stop!
Hi Barbara, that’s exactly right! Often people think that I have the difficult job working the locks, but I think Martin has the most difficult job, making sure our boat/home is safe, such a huge responsibility. When I’m working the locks I’m always keeping an eye on the boat to make sure it is rising or lowering at a level pace and so is Martin, like you say, always adjusting the throttle and keeping the boat where it needs to be. So pleased you enjoyed being onboard with us inside the locks, have a lovely weekend Barbara! xx
Its nice to learn something new as you travel the waterways. You both are a good team!
Thank you John, yes every day is a school day when you’re boating that’s for sure! Thank you John! xx
The step locks are intimidating for sure!
Yes, they are quite deep, and being at the front of the boat as I was then, like you say, it was quite intimidating! So long as you take them slow though they are fine. Thank you Laurie! xx
Another fantastic video
Loved it inside the lock shows the power of the water ty both
Hi Ian, it was so nice of the volunteer lockies to let me do that instead of helping work the locks, I did feel lazy! But it was a great opportunity to show how the wate4 enters the locks and to highlight safety when working the locks. So pleased you enjoyed it, thanks Ian! xx
Thank you Julie & Martin
You’re welcome Helly, certainly a different view from inside the lock, glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! xx

That would be really scary going through those locks if you didn't know what was going to happen. Thanks for the views from the bottom. I've been through locks on a really big boat and it wasn't so scary.
Hi Celia, glad you enjoyed being onboard in the locks. We wanted to show how the water enters the lock and the safest way we know to work them. Have a lovely weekend Celia! xx
Another great vlog Julie and Martin. So pretty xx
Thank you so much Kath, have a lovely weekend! xx
Hi Julie! I really enjoyed seeing those interesting locks, even though they were super intimidating with the ferocious way the water came in, both from the ground paddles and the gate paddles. When they opened the ground paddles, it looked like a boiling cauldron!
Yes, it was a fantastic experience being at the front of the boat, I really hope it helps people understand how the locks work. Glad you enjoyed being onboard with us inside the locks, have a lovely weekend Chris! xx
Great vlog!! Thanks for adding the date! I like knowing the time of the journey. It was great to see the footage of the locks from the bow of the boat.
Hi Sheila, yes I remembered to put the date in lol. Sorry we are so behind, but we ended up travelling further and quicker than we normally would due to keeping to Ch4’s schedule for filming, so I ended up with more footage, I will try and catch up over the next few weeks! We don’t want to be putting winter scenes out in Spring lol 😜 Have a lovely weekend Sheila xx
The lower end of the Staffs and Worcs canal is beautiful especially around Kinver and Wolverley I don’t think it get the recognition it deserves I’m so pleased Martin keeps the bow away from the front of the lock on the way up I do the same I been told more than once to let the front fender slide up the lock !!! you can see from your camera footage lots do
Hi David, the Staffs & Worcester canal is one of our favourite canals, so beautiful! Yes, we have heard of people doing that, perhaps ok if there are only ground paddles as the water comes in from underneath, we wanted to show how the water enters the lock, we certainly would not open those gate paddles if the boat was near the top gate! Thanks David! xx
It’s freezing! 21st November! Thank goodness it’s Thursday and I can relax and watch what you two are up to! Looking forward to you catching up with the weather! Keep warm!
Hi Liz, yes it really has been freezing these past couple of days! Sorry we are further behind on footage than usual, we ended up cruising further and quicker than normal to keep to Ch4’s schedule, so ended up covering more miles and have more footage than we usually would. We will try and catch up over the next few weeks with extra videos. Thanks Liz! xx
The locks from a different perspective is awesome. Thanks for that. Again, awesome video. As per usual, I learnt a lot.
Take care. As you have said frquently, SEE YOU IN THE NEXT ONE🤣

Grrrr....I somehow missed my notification !! Anyhoo...That was really a cool view being so close as the water came in. It was obvious that you aren't usually on the boat since you were so mesmerized by the slime 🤣 Entertaining as always.
Yes, I couldn’t believe all that yuk on the walls, but what a fab experience, and a good opportunity to see the water coming in up close! Glad you liked it, thank you! xx
My favorite episode yet! Nice filming and explanation.

great see new vlog out on cut keep up the great vlogs and cranking it on the cut
Always good to hear you enjoyed it Lee, thank you! xx
That was really informative and I hope you can do the same sort of vlog going down as it would be useful to see how Martin place’s the boat by the gate’s. As a holiday boater I’m never quite sure the best position. Many thanks. 👍
Hi Judy, yes, the next time we go down in a lock we will show that. I think we will need to show it from Martin’s perspective, as going down in a lock is the opposite from going up, in that you need to be close to the front gate, so as the keep the boat forward of the cill. I may do a talk over in an upcoming video, as I’m sure we have some coming up that are going down. Thank you Judy, have a lovely weekend! xx

Hi you three! It was a fab experience and really helped to show how the locks worked, glad you enjoyed it too! Hope you’re all well xx
yes thats a great view
Thank you! xx
Those locks you went through were a bit scary, the force f the water was tremendous. I know a few years back a boat got upended on one of the canals it’s was awful. Thank you so much for another great video.
Hi Susan, it was a great experience being that close to the top gate. It gave us a chance to show the force of the water and explain why it is so important to keep alert when your boat is in the lock. It’s awful when you see a sunken boat in a lock. Thank you so much! xx
Fantastic scenery and lovely moorings..not sure about sitting at the front whilst in the locks 😂
Hiya matey! It was a little scary being that close to the water coming in the lock, but a great experience! Thanks Debbie! xx
Waw, that filming in the lock was really powerful, could be tricky as a single boater or a big boat like Liz and Paul’s. Good there are volunteers ho help out. I still can’t get over it how different everything looks from the water. I can see why you moved from a house to a narrowboat now! ❤🎉❤
Hi Eric, yes, we absolutely love life on the water, like you say, everything looks so different from the water! With longer boats like Liz & Paul’s and single-handers, they would just take it slower and open the ground paddles and wait for the water to be above the fill and up to the gate paddles. This way when the gate paddles are opened, it is running into the water instead of dropping down, and your boat would be on the same level or above so the water wouldn’t fall into your boat. Hope that makes sense! Thank you so much Eric, have a lovely weekend! xx
@ cheers guys! 🍺🥃

Hi Julie and Martin, fantastic view from inside the locks, they really are quite a piece of engineering. Hope you’re are keeping well with all this snow, it’s just started snowing here again and it’s getting heavier, luckily my jury duty has finished now. I did see your Facebook post this morning with the canal frozen, hopefully the weather will warm up a bit soon. Hope you have a wonderful weekend, lots of love and best wishes as always
Hi Edward, it was a great experience being that close to the top gates, gave me a chance to see exactly how the water enters the locks, glad it came across ok. Hi Julie, hi Martin
I've been trying to recall who built Rhapsody. If I may ask how long did it take from the time you put a deposit down until Rhapsody was placed in the water? She really is a beautiful boat and it is evident that you have both enjoyed her.
I love the way you showed the canal book to the viewers, nice touch and very informative.
Mark
Alberta, Canada
Hi Mark, Rhapsody was built in 2004 by G.J. Reeves and fitted out by Crown Boats. We didn’t have her built, we have only owned her since September 2021. We were very lucky that the two previous owners really took care of her, as we do too. Thank you for your lovely compliments Mark! xx

I guess a day without locks must be boring heh ? 😉
Bratch locks: Whats the altitude difference between the bottom and the top ? The locks seems to be quite tall
Hi Francois, the Bratch locks are 3 locks and a rise of 30 feet and 2 inches, so yes quite deep locks! Every cruise is different, working locks can be fun, but cruising without locks is very relaxing and peaceful, never boring lol 😜 Have a lovely weekend! xx
I notice over several videos, boats that are either in the process of sinking (sad) or have sunk (more sad). Would rain collecting in the unattended or abandoned boat a contributing factor to the sinking? I'm of course, excluding boat maintenance for leaks from the equation. Are there automatic bilge pumps that help? Is it collected for use on the "healthy" boats?
Hi Brent, usually boats would have drainage holes somewhere at the front in the well-deck, so rain water would run out. But at the back, especially in the engine bay, if water leaks in it will just collect and yes eventually sink a boat. Usually most boats will have automatic bilge pumps to expel the water, especially if they are leaving their boat for any length of time. Otherwise, boaters will always keep a check on the engine bay and also check the base plate using an inspection hatch near the bulkhead at the back and pump out any water that has collected over time using a pump. In winter you have to be especially careful, as there is always condensation that builds up inside the hull, due to changes in temperature, being warm in the cabin, but the hull being in icy water, you can see the droplets when we look through the inspection hatch and see the condensation on the inside of the hull. This water runs down and collects near the bulkhead. Our first winter onboard, we weren’t aware of the need to check it regularly and when we did we had over 13 litres of water down there! 🫣 but this is completely normal and in the summer months it’s dry as a bone! Hope this all makes sense Brent! Thank you xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Yes it absolutely does and I appreciate the explanation. Wow, y'all got lucky that first winter. Good lesson for everyone to learn. Thank you so much!
You’re very welcome Brent, and thank you! xx
Hi julie and martin quick question why do narrowboats have one or two coloured srtipes at the tiller ?
Hi Graeme, they are called tunnel bands, it’s how they used to tell which way a boat was travelling in a tunnel, or so you could tell if a boat was approaching or going in the same direction as you from a long distance... This has been carried on especially on trad stern boats like ours, keeping things looking traditional. Hope this helps! Thanks Graeme xx
@JulieandMartinonRIB ok thats great thanks for the answer thats put that to bed keep up the great vlogs love your channel
Thanks Graeme! xx

Thank you again for posting another video . One question regarding morning privileges. Could you explain where and how you’re able to discern locations that are open to the public verses those that are private . I see there are indicators in maps but do you have visual aids on the canal itself ?
Hi Sean, yes, there are signs on the bank showing if they are private moorings, or perhaps CRT long-term moorings, or moorings that are for permit holders only. If there are no signs at all, then you can moor for up to 14 days, and often there are signs that say we can moor but have a restriction of say 1 day, 2 day, 5 day, or 7 day only mooring. I will try and incorporate this in a future video. Please bear with us, as we have ended up a few weeks behind with footage, as ended up cruising more journeys than usual to meet Ch4’s schedule. I will see if we can catch up a bit with the odd extra video, so it will be in a few weeks. Thank you so much Sean! xx
Xx
Hope you’re well Edward! Thank you! xx
