  • Ever wondered what it is like to climb Alpe d’Huez? This is the full 1hr 12min video of my ride in September 2022. Just to put this in context, I was 49 years old at the time and had been riding a road bike for around 6 years. My FTP was 245 at the time after several months of training. I gave it everything I had, but was also feeling the cumulative effect of the Col du télégraphe, Col du Galibier and Col d’Izoard in previous days.
I have left the original audio in - you can hear that I was working hard, and please excuse my dreadful French pronunciation when greeting other riders!! The average temperature on the day was 25°C, but much hotter at the bottom, and you will see that I stopped a few times (I have cut those bits out). The film covers the climb up to Alpe d’Huez (same distance as Alpe de Zwift), but does not cover the final section to the Tour de France finish (my GoPro battery ran out in the tunnel just after the finish). A fantastic, iconic climb on a beautiful day. I hope you enjoy.

I'm looking forward to riding this several times this July as well as all the other great climbs in the vicinity. Croix de Fer is my favourite ( from Allemonde ).

cheers for the vid - cant believe i just listened to a man heavy breathing for over an hour 🤣 a great effort and now i know what im facing next year, just out of interest may i be so rude to ask how heavy are you as those power numbers look serious so just want to know for comparison to myself. those right hand switchbacks look the toughest part. amazing effort once again and great vid

Thanks for the comment, and glad you got something out of it!! I certainly had to think twice before posting the 'raw' version. At the time the film was recorded I think I was 76kg, but I usually weigh around 80kg. The toughest part of the climb is the first 2-3 hairpins - despite knowing this I went off too hard. The switchbacks aren't bad, but as you say the right hand ones are harder. If you need to rest, stop at the left hand turns - you tend to get the best views from those ones as well. Good luck next year - you'll love it!!

Great effort. Have you done the Alpe du Zwift; if so wondering how it compared? I’m planning on doing this for the first time at the end of June 2024 and am pretty nervous, as just want to complete it without stopping. Like you, my lowest gear is 36 on front and 34 at the back and weight 76kg. Any advice?

I've done Alpe du Zwift quite a few times (check out my comparison: ua-cam.com/video/J-Yq8RT3SO0/v-deo.html). I would say that Zwift gives you a pretty good feel for what to expect, particularly if you set the trainer difficulty to full.

I will NEVER understand why people think that going slowly uphill is more fun that going downhill and going fast.

Takes all sorts I suppose! For me it's the sense of achievement, and the perspective it gives you on just how fast the pros are. I like going downhill too, but advancing years and being a father do make me more aware of my own mortality at times.

Watched every moment in preparation for my trip next year. 80kg want to hit 76kg by then. May i ask the gear you sat on? I will be using 50/34 11/32.

Thanks for the comment and glad that you got something out of the video! You will love it - such an iconic climb. I was on 52-36 with 11-34 at the back. To be honest I wasn't out of the 34 ring very often. I was around 76kg at the time as well.
