    I'm from Ohio, USA. I'm in awe of you people climbing these big alpine monsters. Around here, all we've got are hills about a mile long with maybe 300 feet of climbing. A KOM wannabe I am.... 😂

    • @jennycycles
      @jennycycles  2 роки тому +1

      Wow! 300 feet?! I bet there is competition for a KOM on that 🤣 does the alps tempt you?

      @@jennycycles The hills here are near the Lake Erie lowlands, and are so short it only takes an idiot like me 6-7 minutes to climb. The average gradients are around 7-9%, but the road surfaces are like chip seal.
      Yeah, the Alps would be a buckey list thing. But I'd be wise to firstly tackle one of the mountains in the Appalachian Blue Ridge range, in the West Virginia/Virginia/North Carolina area...

    i moved from Scotland to Australia 3 years ago. Done Alpe D'huez 5 times in the past but now i so miss being able to hop on an Easyjet flight to Geneva and riding in the alps!

      How do you find riding in Australia? I always find the alps HOT! 😂 I do love being able to hop on a flight and two hours or so later, be on an Alp!

    i did Alpe and ventoux in the same week a few years back Ventoux was much harder. Alpe is class too but give yourself a few kms to warm up before you hit the bottom the pull up to the 1st switchback is a killer

    Love it. I did it in 2011 and had planned to do the Galiber after, but scrapped that!! But I do recall the bike I hired having a sadistic 52/39 and 11-25 gear combo which made it a real grind grrrr.

    • @jennybrennan7177

      The Galiber is beautiful. Fantastic climb 😊 you will have to go back and ride it.

      @@jennybrennan7177 Agreed Galibier is amazing. Toughest ride i have ever done all the way from Bourg to the top. Found the altitude a killer and those long uphill tunnels can be a bit sketchy.

    I've ridden Alpe d'Huez a number of times and it will punish you if you attack it a bit too agressively at the steep start. It's nice having a cafe at the top. Very close by there are harder and more interesting climbs though.

      If you do get there - The Alp is OK (tough but not the best as usually busy with cars / bikes etc). I much preferred the ride up the Glandon / Croix de la Fer from Allemond. Also check out Les Deux Alp - much quieter. You could also climb up the back side of Alp D'Huez (Col De Sarrenne) then descend Huez to La Garde and then take the balcony road.

    • @Adambrennan
      @Adambrennan 2 роки тому +1

      @@Greg.Sutton good advice! We have a video of the Col de Sarenne loop too. Definitely one of our favourites! Col du Sabot is another one that should be on everyone's to-do list (and it's a lot quieter than the Alpe, as long as you don't count cows!). The balcony road to/from Auris is possibly my favourite road to cycle but Jenny isn't a massive fan of the drop...

    Or you ride against massive winds and air pressure in Southern Ontario Canada, you might as wish you were going up Alpe D'huez. Hell we cross chain here just to get decent speeds around the great lakes, notorious air pressure and winds. Barely no winds up those European mountains, I grew up in them you are at 2000 meters with barely any wind.

    • @jennycycles
      @jennycycles  2 роки тому

      I do love that about the Alps. Very little winds. Scotland can be pretty windy which like you say makes cycling difficult (especially lighter riders 🤣). But at least you get some good training in 😂 what do you do over the winter months? I’m sure you must get lots of snow?

      Winnats isn't difficult with a low enough gear. It's what 1km? The narrow road is the issue for me. The Alpe is long with changes of gradient. You have heat to contend with. You ride it at your pace pref with the lowest gear and work from there.

    • @richardburns5925
      @richardburns5925 2 роки тому

      @@markrushton1516 Alpe? Beautiful sunshine, brilliant road surface, no traffic and even better, in a pro cycling country, lovely car drivers (when you see one) to wave at. Winnats Pass? Steep, narrow sides looming above you, cars and vans driven by impatient anti cycling British drivers on your back wheel, fighting to get past, constant traffic, constant. You are under the cosh in a big way. Peak District weather to contend with, no sunshine and pleasantness, just a howling gale against you, frozen numb hands n feet and sideways, I say, sideways rain. When you get to the first cattle grid, probably the steepest cattle grid in Britain and you are in the top rear cog already, it's not good. At the first right hand bend, I will guarantee you will try and shift into a gear that doesn't exist. Try to remain seated till death, if you get out of the saddle too early, your in trouble.
