  • After struggling with a learning disability and mental health issues her entire life, my sister is making big changes and pushing on like no one else.
Felt it was time Gene got a chance to be heard. I couldn't be more proud. Hope you enjoy.

i showed my brother who has autism this and he seemed to really like it.

One of my oldest friends has a learning disability and as a kid I would get so confused when people would talk about her or make fun of her because to me she was and is just a person. A person who loves My Little Pony and Halloween, loves to tell stories, has the most beautiful blue eyes and wouldn't hurt a fly. So I liked this quite a lot, Bertie. Thank you.

I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, I didn't expect it to hit me that hard. It's like you told the story of me and my twin brother. He struggled a lot, always. He began thinking about suicide 5 years ago and got so violent, even to my mom. We were helpless. On the worst day of our lives we had to call the police and they brought him to the hospital. After months there he could go back home and now after two years being at home he is now in a supported house and happy there. Two years ago I never would have thought that it will ever be possible.

I'm crying this video really hit home. I know a girl who's about two/three years younger than me who has the same learning disability as Gene and last week I witnessed her being taunted because of it. My immediate reaction was to go over and tell the bullies to go away and leave her alone. After about 5 minutes arguing with the bullies, I turned to her and hugged her as she cried into my shoulder; it was the third time they had bullied her that day and it was only 11:25 am. Today was our last day before Easter and as we left school she ran up to me excited because she had been told she was able to have her first sleepover at a friends house; after i got home I broke down in tears because she sees me as one of the good people in the world but we may never see each other again as I start sixth form in September.
It's so refreshing to see learning disabilities shown in a positive light and I'm so proud of Gene for making such a big change!
i'm aware this is a long comment, but it needed to be said.

what a wonderful woman Gene is, as someone with a disabled brother, this is so lovely to see. we also have a Tom test, anyone who is awkward around him because of his disability we do not like. he's just a person, all you have to do is talk to him but some people can't see that and just choose to ignore him, gene has probably experienced the same
again, such a lovely video and so glad to see disability represented in an honest way ❤

    • @bryrk
      @bryrk 7 років тому +1

I absolutely despise the discrimination against people with disabilities. Just because they don't act, talk, move, or look the same as people, doesn't make them any less human than anybody else. I hate when people deliberately ignore disabled people, and if I ever see that happen I make an effort to talk to the person with disabilities so that they know the world isn't all like that. Give your brother love from me :)

this was lovely😊I have a relative with learning difficulties, she lived at home until she was 23 and really struggled to leave the house unassisted. she went into supported living and started to become more independent, she learned how to do basic tasks like washing clothes, ironing, cooking etc. She moved out of one supported living house into another due to an incident with another resident and her second place was where she really came into her own! I remember seeing her after several months of her living there and I couldn't believe the amount of confidence she had gained, she was traveling to and from town on her own, doing the weekly shop for her house with little supervision, she learnt an easy way to manage her money and she was just so happy to have so much independence. she moved into her own place last year at 29 and she's doing really well! supported living works wonders for people with mental health issues and disabilities, hopefully your sister has as much success with is as my relative has☺️
(I call her my relative because she's my dads cousins daughter so I have no idea what family title she would have in terms of cousins etc😂)

I don't cry much. This made me cry. It takes so much love and understanding to live with people with learning difficulties, such as my father who grew up in such a time where it was not accepted well by most. He grew up with those around him pushing him aside but has learnt to surround himself by people with love and understanding. It's not much of an overstatement to say that Bertie has become a large part of my life as someone to relate with and I treasure him even more dearly now he's made this wonderful video.
Thing like this are hard to talk about and I am so glad that you have done it the way you did ( even if I didn't put it the best way). This kinda thing will make a difference and it's important that Bertie knows that.
Thanks for being there in so many ways,
    Sam

This was absolutely beautiful. My brother has asperger's syndrome and he was definitely treated differently as a child. Our public school system treated him as an outcast, he was bullied relentlessly, even his doctors told my parents he would probably end up in a home. Instead of believing that garbage, my parents fought back and treated him like a fully capable human and now most people that meet him don't even know he has asperger's. He is kind, loving, and smart as hell. I am so happy with the change and growth our society has experienced in the last 20 years alone towards those who are a little different. Congrats to your sister and thank you for shining such a beautiful light on such an important conversation.

She’s so cute, I don’t understand why people would judge someone so beautiful inside and out for difficulties she can’t control x

No judgment Genevieve ;) I hope everything works out for you and keep up the good work. Always remember that not one person is perfect. We all have struggle and make mistakes but what matters is that we are kind to each other and always do our best. You seem to be very kind and thoughtful which makes me very happy. Wishing you the best!

This is just so lovely. I work with adults with a range of learning disabailities and watching them learn how to be independent by doing small things like ironing their own clothes to going out and getting jobs is amazing. It really gives them and the people around them a sense of pride which is so important.

Oh goodness. This struck a nerve (in a good way). My younger sister is autistic, along with having OCD, anxiety, and depression, and has been having an especially hard time the last few months. We've come so close to calling the hospital or the police, both for our safety and for her own, and sometimes I just don't know what we are going to do with her. She's so brilliant and special, just as your sister is. Gene's video is so encouraging. I've never met her, but as someone who knows what this can be like, I feel so proud of her. Golly goodness. Why must you make me tear up like this. I wish her all the luck and happiness in the world. Ok bye now.

My oldest sister grew up with a lot of learning difficulties. She now lives on her own. Your sister reminds me a lot of her. This was lovely, mate.

I have a very borderline learning disability, which means I perform just under my peers. I'm just as smart as them, and I'm just as mature as them, I just learn differently. Since I didn't meet many criteria for programs that could help me, there was very little help I could get. I went through hours and hours of testing to diagnose, only to hear that yes, I could benefit from help, but there were very few ways I could get it. So, I became unmotivated, and ended up pretty much a high school drop out. I'm still trying my best to finish so I can qualify for the programs that will get me to my future, but it's so hard. I'm so so glad that Gene got the help she needed. It makes my soul happy to know that this will raise awareness for learning differences. I'm hoping to adopt in the future, and adopt kids with learning disabilities. Because I know what I needed to succeed and I want to give them that. Thanks for doing this Bertie, you're really doing a good thing here.

This was so nice to watch. My little brother has special needs and I couldn't love him more or be more proud of him. It's so lovely to see a person with learning difficulties being portrayed as the lovable, complex human that they are, and not the burden that society assumes they must be.

"No, no, you didn't force me. ...There comes a time where you have to go for it, and I'm ready now." I love this and now I'm crying a lot, from that part and the last bit where you ask Genevieve (I can only hope that her name's spelled correctly) if she enjoyed being filled and she responds so brightly and bubbly, "Yes, I have. Can we do it a little bit more?" You both are just so lovely and this video was just so sweet.
