So was sav taking the head off at the end representative of Dodie coming to the realisation that they're both real people with their own flaws and imperfections ect ect
I thought that the girl papier-mâché head was Dodie and Dodie was being chased by her warped memories of the relationship until she makes peace with herself
You're such a good director! I love the red objects, like Dodie watching the rose /relationship be destroyed, then letting the balloon /the relationship go, then passing on the beret/relationship to the 'next person' willingly at the end. I read too much into stuff lol, but you're clever! Bravo!
Sera Ellis Oh right I thought this was one of those ad bots but instead of trying to sell me viagra or whatever it was selling me IKEA bags (which tbh was a much better sell) but I just realised it was an answer to the question.
I've thought of another meaning behind the red things as well as bookmarking and symbolising love etc. The lyrics say "Why do all the red flags just look like so much fun?", so that links back to the idea of red flags, danger signs that become something nice when you're in love, like being given flowers or a balloon only to tear the petals from the rose, and have the balloon fly off. Just a thought. Loved this, and the music video. Nice job! x
i absolutely adore the music video, as soon as i saw the giant heads i was totally on board because it's just so mad and incredible and a brilliant metaphor and i loved how over the top everything was so much. one of my favourite music video concepts like ever
Dodie’s “You” music video is all art, emotion, sensitivity... you brought a beautiful, meaningful image to the song, and I just love it, can’t stop rewatching 💕 such a good work for an amazing song! Thank you
My little brother walked into me watching the video and was absolutely terrified of the paper mache heads! Honestly, they are a bit frightening but I love the effect that they brought.
To me, the music video for "You" definitely matched the lyrics, song and tone. When I first heard it I thought, "Paris, a hopeless romantic and a funny twist" and to me, you nailed it. This is, I think, my favourite dodie music video so far. I love your work and I can't wait for more!!
I missed your voice Bertie, I could listen to you all day. You truly (mostly) know what you're talking about, never feel like you can't make stuff like this all the time cause it's really nice ✨✨✨
I love this "making of" vid, Bert! I like dissections of films, in particular (not of anything else, like dead things because... just, no) like when Dodie dissected her song, Intertwined. Was expecting for there to be one for You and here it is! So thanks. Job well done, I think, and all the elements that just needed vocalizing was addressed with this and so... yeah. That's all :)
genuinely loved the music video bertie. it was really interesting playing around with ratio, and giving it a home-movie kind of feel. i'd love for you to direct some more of dodie's music videos in the future!
I just re-discovered your channel and I just gotta say, I'm incredibly impressed with the progression you have made as a person. The first video I ever remember seeing of yours was back when you used to make videos with your two friends and the content you are currently making is really good and creative, your talent has grown very much. Well done, Bertie! You should be proud of yourself.
i definitely looked like an idiot bobblehead watching this video because i was just sitting there vigorously nodding my head every two minutes.. i absolutely loved the video and hearing you explain your process made it even more enjoyable! i really think you made all the right decisions and really nailed this one :) i'm super excited for the next film about your sister- the first one really made an impact on me and so i'm stoked to see what comes next
I'm a newcomer to dodie's music, and I saw the video for "You" for the first time yesterday (20 Nov), and I've gotta say, what a great concept for the video Mr Gilbert. I love the lyrics, and your concept for the video fits them so well. Dodie's singing/song-writing is beautiful, your film-making is wonderful...what a great "pairing", as it were. Very, very nice indeed.
This is really really excellent. So many elegant and articulate thoughts behind one vid. (Also I couldn't be happier you put the flame to them, they burned beautifully and can't come after my flesh now)
I really love what you did, Bertie. I also really appreciate you sharing your thought process and how you dissected the song to put together the music video. It helped me deal with my own grief regarding a heartbreak. So thank you on all levels. Cheers, mate. Your mind and your art both rock.
Love hearing you explain how you created the video. It’s one thing to put out such a lovely visual and let others dissect it but its another to explain you thought process! 😊
I saw you made it and I was so impressed, made so much sense. Good work! I remember watching you when you were about 13 and its so cool you're here now. You're so damn inspiring
AS A TAP DANCER I HARDCORE FROTH THAT YOU'RE MAKING A SHORT FILM ON TAP DANCING BECAUSE IT IS FUN AS HELL AND NEEDS MORE RECOGNITION BECAUSE IT GIVES ME LIFE I WANT TO GET A TATTOO OF TAP SHOES
yay bertie is back with another video! just wanna say, you are really one of my inspiration in film and one of the reasons why i went off to pursue a career in film.
Bertieee! Thank you for doing this kind of videos, it's always a pleasure getting to know a little bit about your creative process, hope to see more proyects of yours soon💖
I love the music video, I love the ideas behind it and I love your work. I am so happy I got to see and hear all the pieces of this. It goes together so well.
you have done your job, quite well. Personally zooms just make me laugh like an idiot,so,it was really light on the surface as you wanted to and as you said if you dig deeper there is that sadness hidden between the lines. I didn't really expect this kind of thing from you, i am really pleased with it, i love seeing your kind of psychological and philosophical style merge with dodie's song and a more light project. Will impatiently wait for more of your work.
Well I am EXCITED for Stomping Grounds! As a tap dancer I am so ready for it. Loved this video as well! You nailed the dodie aesthetic right on the head!
the music video is so meaningful and beautiful. you have achieved what you wanted to because i think it is such an incredible video alongside an incredible song
you're so wonderfully talented
ur explanation of the song is delicious
also u guessed all the it comments
doddleoddle it is such a beautiful music video🍭
i love the song and the music video it is beautiful 😍😍😍
the same can be said about you ;p
you're one creative cookie
DODIE'S CLARK
Aura Ali dODIE’S CLARK
"it's got that crusty, crab, crabs, krusty krab feel"
are you sure sav is the poet?
13:49 if anyone was wondering
what is Dodie’s “clark” and can I be it
Melanie Anne Ahern congrats on getting more likes then the comment from dodie 😂
Lol I agree
Melanie - hi it may be that clerk is spelt with an 'e'
NOOOOOOOOOO GOD NO
i was really looking forward to 16 minutes of paper mache crafting
Not even the explanation
So was sav taking the head off at the end representative of Dodie coming to the realisation that they're both real people with their own flaws and imperfections ect ect
!!!
i wonder what made bertie think, "hey, let me make paper mache heads of my friends and light them on fire!" true icon
those were both bert's ideas
Savannah Brown fixed it! :)
The first thing I thought when I saw those heads was "burn them" tbh thanks for making my dreams come true
i love dodie's clark
giovanna ,
dodie's clark is amazing
your hair looks hella good
It's funny, I assumed the red balloon was a reference to Lamorisse's short film Le Ballon Rouge. Stephen King didn't even cross my mind.
same, i watched le ballon rouge in my french class and immediately assumed that
savannah gross
i thought it was a reference to funny face, a musical in paris starring audrey hepburn
I thought that the girl papier-mâché head was Dodie and Dodie was being chased by her warped memories of the relationship until she makes peace with herself
so did i tbh hm
as soon as the video started and they put the heads on fire i was like nOOOOOOoOooOooOO
You're such a good director! I love the red objects, like Dodie watching the rose /relationship be destroyed, then letting the balloon /the relationship go, then passing on the beret/relationship to the 'next person' willingly at the end. I read too much into stuff lol, but you're clever! Bravo!
I love hearing about this BTS stuff - and how it was all conceptualised.
shit I thought you were talking about kpop and got really confused
Tamar Mack same I was like did they comment on the wrong video??
AKIKO CHAN Same.
question: how did you guys take the paper mache thingies to paris?? did you guys make it there or did you guys travel with them???
Sera Ellis Oh right I thought this was one of those ad bots but instead of trying to sell me viagra or whatever it was selling me IKEA bags (which tbh was a much better sell) but I just realised it was an answer to the question.
Aura Ali I can just imagine the faces of the airport security!
They probably went on the ferry from england to france
Rosie Butler or the train, even easier :)
actually they did go on the ferry, you saw it on dodies snapchat
This is so interesting! now I wanna direct dodie's next music video!!
About a movie You would be great at directing music videos, as your videos already kind of remind me of music videos in a way, love them too!
I'm sure you'd be great at it
you should! I love your channel & videos
Just when I thought there would be nothing interesting to watch today, the Gods of film-making and music give me this. Bless.
you always inspire me
You is one of my favorite, if not my all time favorite song off the EP and you really did it justice. I adored the concept of the music video!
is that dog a lab ?? bc if it is then bertie perfectly timed the quote "handing it off to a lab" with actual footage of a lab & that's genius.
Eliska Merchant pretty sure it's a golden retriever but I had the same thought
I've thought of another meaning behind the red things as well as bookmarking and symbolising love etc. The lyrics say "Why do all the red flags just look like so much fun?", so that links back to the idea of red flags, danger signs that become something nice when you're in love, like being given flowers or a balloon only to tear the petals from the rose, and have the balloon fly off. Just a thought. Loved this, and the music video. Nice job! x
Wow Bertie had a glo up since bleaching Tyler Oakleys hair
Super 8, Paris, nostalgia, romance, Dodie... Wait, this isn't "You".
This is me!
(no joke) (this is definitely me)
Connor Griffiths Oh then we might be the same person ahah
I wonder what Jon Cozart’s opinion of this music video was
N o
thank you for blessing us
If there is not an "it" joke in this imma cry
I liked the doddlebobble heads. They reminded me of the film Frank. Wonderful work!
i absolutely adore the music video, as soon as i saw the giant heads i was totally on board because it's just so mad and incredible and a brilliant metaphor and i loved how over the top everything was so much. one of my favourite music video concepts like ever
Bertie, your endless talent and utter wit never ceases to induce and amaze me. Please Bertie, never stop what you’re doing.
Congratulations on making one of the most beautiful pieces of art 👏
Thank you! These process videos are so lovely! I enjoy them immensely.
omg i’m deeply in love with this light and color correction
Dodie’s “You” music video is all art, emotion, sensitivity... you brought a beautiful, meaningful image to the song, and I just love it, can’t stop rewatching 💕 such a good work for an amazing song! Thank you
MISSED U BERT
This makes me want to hug Dodie so much!
came here because of dodie but wow that is one beautiful man
I love the creative yet complex approach to this song and what it represents, it's so amazing
My little brother walked into me watching the video and was absolutely terrified of the paper mache heads! Honestly, they are a bit frightening but I love the effect that they brought.
it's a terrific video! Really dig the "Krusty crab" feel.
these are literally my favourite types of videos to watch on youtube so the fact this contains some of my favourite people makes me v happy
The accordion sound! Was lovely!
Still mad they removed the accordion sound!
where do you get your 8mm footage developed into digital media? sorry about all the comments, you inspire me as i film too x
Elisa Benaggoune i dont know if they used this, but there’s an app in the App Store called 8mm that I use and love!
There'sNoPlaceLikeHome I assume she was asking about developing the literal 8mm film, not the 8mm film effect for a phone
Asyifa Kirana I think she/he knows that and is just suggesting an alternative:)
yeah I was :) thankyou!! I have the app already and two 8mm cameras but the process no one talks about
Very expensive scanners. They scan the film unto the computers I cannot recall the name of one.
Rugrats in Paris is the shit
thankyou bert
To me, the music video for "You" definitely matched the lyrics, song and tone. When I first heard it I thought, "Paris, a hopeless romantic and a funny twist" and to me, you nailed it. This is, I think, my favourite dodie music video so far. I love your work and I can't wait for more!!
“Walking round Paris, being pissed off” same
I missed your voice Bertie, I could listen to you all day. You truly (mostly) know what you're talking about, never feel like you can't make stuff like this all the time cause it's really nice ✨✨✨

Honestly, that video was so creative. Your work never seizes to put a smile on my face 💜
genuinely loved the music video bertie. it was really interesting playing around with ratio, and giving it a home-movie kind of feel. i'd love for you to direct some more of dodie's music videos in the future!
omg seeing the tap dancing at teh end got me so excited for this film cause what he did was part of the cyllabus that we do and eeeeeeee im so ready
This made me see the song and video in such a different way. Thank you.
You all did an incredible job. Honestly this song and the video together were perfection.
Anyone else know the french children's story called "Red Balloon"? Thats what I thought the balloon symbolized, the crushing of innocence by others.
I just re-discovered your channel and I just gotta say, I'm incredibly impressed with the progression you have made as a person. This is very insightful and brilliant. Learnt some new phrases and stuff about cameras too. LOVE IT
'everyone on the outside looking in'
ON THE OUTSIDE ALWAYS LOOKING IN, WILL I, EVER BE MORE THAN IVE ALWAYS BEEEENN
This is absolutely amazing and also that clip at the end boyyyyyyyyyy my heart
I'm a newcomer to dodie's music, and I saw the video for "You" for the first time yesterday (20 Nov), and I've gotta say, what a great concept for the video Mr Gilbert. I love the lyrics, and your concept for the video fits them so well.

it's all amazing when watching it but it's even better when looking into the complex and beautifully creative thoughts that went into it
Love hearing you explain how you created the video. It’s one thing to put out such a lovely visual and let others dissect it but its another to explain you thought process! 😊

I must say, the music video was brilliant and I'm very much looking forward to your upcoming stuff!
