Thanks to the VirginRock Community, my attention was pointed towards this very recent composition by a young Welsh artist, REN. It was a pleasure listening and exploring it for the first time, and I am going to keep my ears open to see what else he may produce in the future.

I agree, also the longest one I have seen so far. And still it felt rushed at some points. I was impressed on how she got into the feelings expressed by the good side in the beginning, him being calm and trying to be assertive, but still the fear shows through. And I think she missed going that deep into the slight change the good side made, before the newsflash part. There he loses his calm and reasonable side and gets more like the dark side, that finally overwhelms him. He does not counter with arguments anymore and sounds more desperate and tries to shut the dark side down by force. But she kind of skipped that part and got straight to the "Newsflash" part. And she didn't even get into the flashing lights, the body language, the difference in melody between the bad side and the good side and still being different to the "Newsflash" and the "Hope" side.
Funny to think, that over an hour of reaction to a 10 minute song, can still feel rushed. Shows to me, how much there is to unpack in that song.
But again, at least one of the best reactions I have seen so far, so don't take my criticism as me hating it. Quite the opposite.

I dont agree, as a reaction, its hard to get a full emotional reaction to anything when you interrupt it constantly to talk about whatever over and over like she did. Constant interruption of an experience delutes it. Constant interruption with obvious comments makes this one of the worst reactions. Had she just listened to it in full, then went back and did her commentary it would be so much less annoying to watch.

I couldn’t leave the bathroom until I had made sense of if. Later on I realized that by ren showing us his two sides, he gave us all two sides. The me before hi ren and the me after hi ren.

Speaking as a guitarist myself, the very first thing that grabbed my attention was that the bass notes in the introduction were picked much harder than is typical with a nylon stringed guitar, so much so that the notes became a bit distorted. To me, this creates a counterpoint with the more elegant notes that are played between the bass notes. This counterpoint seems to my ears to mirror the way the two sides of Ren's vocal performance are portrayed in the next portion of the arrangement. Also, the underlying manner that the guitar is played beneath each persona is different...the "darker" side is more intense and almost relentless in feel, while the "good" side is a bit quieter with a different note pattern and more space overall. The underlying rhythm is the same, but the actual notes being played and the dynamics of how they are played changed depending upon "who" is speaking.
When Ren changed the song at the "Newsflash" section, he displayed an amazing use of dynamics, ever building in volume even as he ascends and descends in his playing. To me, it feels like "Bad Ren" is bludgeoning "Good Ren" into submission. When "Good Ren" picks up the narrative again, he strips the music all the way back to playing only the bass notes, then he also begins a dynamic ascent, up to and including his only actual singing at the end of the section. Simply incredible!! His final masterstroke was to finish the song on a non-resolving chord...the battle continues.
I'm sorry if this was overly long, but I thought you might appreciate it.

I love that you caught the unresolved cord at the end. not only does it seem to signify the unending battle but also functions as a tool so that people didn't turn it off right at the end so they could catch the monologue. Very subtle but effective way of keeping the listeners attention even though by all rights it was the end of the song if not the end of the performance.

@@haze5638 I hear that, and sorry you are going through it. As Ren closes out with the line that he has spent half his life ill - I lost it. I was diagnosed when I was 22 years old. I'm 49 now, and likely now to not recover.
The kind of introspective analysis Ren is doing here is just so hugely courageous. I especially note how difficult it can be for men (I'm not male) to be this vulnerable. The amount of self awareness of his condition and status is both humbling, and a lesson to those going through it. There is a reason it takes, on average, people 7 years to seek help after first displaying symptoms. Denial will hold you in place like a bug frozen in amber. You get stuck if you can't begin with acceptance.
I think Ren is teaching this by using his art to show us the vulnerable acceptance of self. It isnt a cure (there may never be a cure), but it is a step in the right direction.

Structure is an interesting part of this. The original falsetto melody carries on as accomp. beneath the "calm voice" and a harsher more percussive rhythm is under the negative voice. The rhythms and styles keep struggling for dominance until the harsh voice triumphs "I was created...," but then the calm voice rises to the challenge, countering "Some people know me as hope.." and sings a triumphant Reggae song. I particularly like the end where Ren combines the harsh rhythm and falsetto melody into a explosion of energy; both voices cooperating to make music. --A sort of Rap-Rock sonata with rhythms and styles instead of key progressions and resolutions. So, under the control of Ren, the artist, the two sides are combined into harmonious purpose --nice

I so agree with you. The last line before the hoo-hoo-hoo reprise is “we’re a coin with two different sides.” The flickering lights, fulsome energetic strumming (dark side) combine with dancing on his own two feet and singing at the top of his lungs (light side) to produce a cohesive and celebratory sum greater than its parts. I really like the way you highlighted that it’s done under the control of Ren, the artist. That’s an important element that I hadn’t consciously recognized, but it’s so clear. Thank you.

    • @BaronSpamedi
      @BaronSpamedi 11 місяців тому +3

This is also more or less how I interpret it.
The melody at the start is softer and feels more reserved, and even slightly lamentful, as its 'Light' Ren.
At the end its a combination of 'Light' Ren, and the energy and power brought by the presence of 'Dark' Ren (which is also evidenced by the 'Dark' Ren flashing lights in this section).
This symbolises Ren finding strength and accepting 'the eternal dance' instead of waging his internal psychological warfare.

I found this song, along with many of Ren's other songs, to be so refreshing because of the depth and meaning of their lyrics, use of poetic language, along with the skillful way he presents them. It is so far above the shallow mainstream music that most people listen to today. It comes from a genuine place, which is evident in both his music, and in the recent interviews he has been doing on various UA-cam reaction channels. He never expected to see the age of 30, so it helped shape his priorities and perspective. Most of his recent releases were stockpiled before he released "Hi Ren" and went to Canada for his 6 month treatment. I can't wait until he starts producing again.

But after I watched "Hi Ren", along with some of his other rap/hip-hop oriented songs I gained a new appreciation for it as an art form, and really like these. I have since watched some NF, and like and appreciate what he is doing. I just haven't latched on to him in the same way I have Ren. I really like how Ren can make social and psychological commentary, and appeal to those on both the left and right in this toxically divided world. He has said in interviews that one of his goals is to help us bridge this gap by showing we have more in common. He speaks to our humanity.
Rap and hip-hop are just a part of what he does. It stands out now, since all his recent releases have been from a tribute to his hip-hop influences. He said his next album will be a set of songs that are more melodically focused, and he is a talented singer. Once you dig into his catalog, you find he has already done a lot of non-rap/hip-hop songs, often in collaborations with others. He often has a strong message in these too, although sometimes he just likes to do fun songs. His Big Push band is great for exploring his rock stuff, many of which are creative covers of 60s through 90s songs (rock, reggae, soul, blues, Latin, alternative).

    Great analysis.
I think the moment that Ren stands up is made even more powerful when put in the context of Ren's life. There were times when he could not stand on his own, as represented by the wheelchair that he was wheeled out in.
I'd also draw your attention to the lighting, as it helps tell the story as well. The lights flicker only when the dark Ren is speaking. Near the end, when he's doing the celebratory vocalizations and dancing, they are still flickering, saying that the dark side is still there. It's not a victory. He's dancing with it, not fighting against it.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue; subsequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved.
Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure.
Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition.
Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available.
Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. Ren has exceeded his initial goal. However, his goal was very conservative and did not reflect the added costs of unforeseen surgical procedures, and treatment for additional health issues such as MCAD. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

One thing that always makes first reactors change their facial expression is the moment Ren starts to sing on this track. It reminds me of the alien opera singer in the movie "The Fifth Element". And it makes no sense. The guy is rolled into a dilapidated room in a wheel chair by a pig-masked butcher/doctor. Plays some guitar and then starts that singing that's almost a yodel. Uhhh...

There’s this strange idea that the peak of music, the ultimate reference point for music, comes from a very small window of time from a very small group of composers in Europe. If you’re at all curious about this topic, I highly recommend watching the video above. Rap is music, and is just as valid a form of music as European classical music or British and American classic rock.

Thank You Amy, for listening & analyzing this music - or performance art if you will. Did you notice the camera also changed when Ren stood up? Any way - apologies for the length of this comment, but you and Vlad may find additional insights as I have a family member who previously has been misdiagnosed with CFS, just at Ren was.
Persons given the label of Constant Fatigue Syndrome often require an unusually long span of time to recover from moderate exertions - friends think they are being avoided, but that's not the reason. Sometimes that recovery time is a few days - forcing a person to "be taking some time to be distant & still". If medical tests are inconclusive (missed symptoms, etc), physicians and specialists might refer a patient to a psychiatrist - who cannot treat a physical ailment, but might proscribe medication which which would alter the creative process of an artist. There is often a long cycle of misdiagnosis for persons with CFS. As ~80% of CFS persons are female, some are diagnosed with hysteria (!), yes you read that correctly. In case anyone should read this and know someone who has been given the medical label of CFS, I'm listing 3 excellent websites below.
[The physician and patient alike should remember that CFS is not a disease. It is a chronic fatigue state where the one essential characteristic of M.E. is acquired Central Nervous System (CNS) dysfunction, that of CFS is primarily chronic fatigue. By assumption, this CFS fatigue can be acquired abruptly or gradually. Secondary symptoms and signs were then added to this primary fatigue anomaly. None of these secondary symptoms is individually essential for the definition and few are scientifically testable. .... This has resulted in much confusion, and many physicians are now diagnosing CFS as though it were a specific illness. They either refer the patient to pharmaceutical, psychiatric, psychological, or social treatment or simply say: “you have CFS and nothing can be done about it”. The CFS definitions have another curiosity. If in any CFS patient, any major organ or system injury or disease is discovered, the patient is removed from the definition. The CFS definitions were written in such a manner that CFS becomes like a desert mirage: The closer you approach, the faster it disappears and the more problematic it becomes.] www.nightingale.ca/understanding-m-e
[Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is an artificial construct created in the US in 1988 for the benefit of various political and financial vested interest groups. It is a mere diagnosis of exclusion (or wastebasket diagnosis) based on the presence of gradual or acute onset fatigue lasting 6 months. If tests show serious abnormalities, a person no longer qualifies for the diagnosis, .... According to the latest CDC estimates, 2.54% of the population qualify for a ‘CFS’ (mis)diagnosis. Every diagnosis of ‘CFS’ can only ever be a misdiagnosis.] www.hfme.org/meandmisdiagnosis.htm
[When I first became ill, one of my symptoms was a constant, low grade fever. Because my doctors weren’t sure what was causing it, they wrote in my file that I had a “fever of unknown origin.” This wording is very similar to that found in the official description of CFS where it says it is for people with “chronic fatigue of undetermined cause.” Imagine if, instead of continuing to seek the true cause of my fever, my doctors and I had settled for the label of “fever of unknown origin.” Imagine that this became the norm any time anybody visited their doctor with a fever. Soon, insurance companies begin to realize the money they can save on expensive tests by convincing doctors and patients to not bother searching for the cause.... Several decades go by, and now nearly everybody - some doctors included - are treating “fever of unknown origin” as its own distinct disease. By treating CFS as its own distinct illness, the powers that be keep people from getting an accurate picture of what’s happening in their bodies through correct diagnosis. By settling for CFS as a final answer, patients are unable to benefit from the research and treatments available for their own, specific condition (conditions frequently misdiagnosed as CFS include Multiple Sclerosis, Lyme Disease, certain types of cancer, Major Depression, and more....] documentingme.net/2015/08/08/me-vs-cfs-whats-up-with-the-name-war/
BTW- this last website is a blog written by my family member, who has been bed-bound for over a decade now. They had previously played piano, flute & viola - not as "relatively lucky" as Ren in merely having Lyme disease and myelin sheath abnormalities which seem to be treatable. Again, thanks for listening so thoughtfully to "HI REN".

Ren is a modern day bard. Not music I would ever have said I’d like, but the more I delve into Ren, his music, his stories…..it sucks you in….and you just have to listen to more. His songs have literally brought me to tears…..

Art like this is rare and Ren has himself watched a lot of these reaction videos. He has also commented on a lot of them. He is as honest in his commentary as he is open and vulnerable in this song. When people praise him for certain progression in the song and how that matters in the story, he admits that the intention of the musical structure is mostly intuitive. He really appreciate how people explain in words for example the technical reason why the music change is so fitting after "News Flash". Also he appreciate all analysis of his lyrics. Art is expression and sometimes we learn what we express from the people who analyze our art. Nobody ever understands what they give us when they create art. Good art don't even expect that to be the case. It is like a feeling put out there and a wish to communicate. Rich artists sometimes forgets that, but Ren hasn't forgotten that

Great, great reaction to this amazing performance. What I‘ve never heard anyone mention (and I watched quite a few reactions) is the following:
In the beginning Ren says: „…my therapist told me I’m ill“, in the part after the Lucifer bit he says: „I spent half my life ill“
I think it’s significant in so far as it shows that in the beginning he is doubtful about what’s wrong about him, he is only being told this and that is wrong with you. After the battle with himself he finally knows what is wrong with him and what ails him, and he has accepted it. This sentiment is also mirrored by the last part where he speaks about learning to accept and relax into it. It is so masterful what he does with his words, it’s simply incredible.

I’ve seen people listen to Hi Ren, and I think they don’t get it! But your analysis is thoughtful, honest, and brilliant. I think of it more as performance art than I do as a song. I appreciated your thoughts so much that I have become a new subscriber. Thank you.

Hi Amy, thanks for your post. I think many of us would be interested to hear your reaction to the Tale of Jenny and Screech, it's 13 minutes long and at the end we have the impression that no time has passed, but that we have witnessed a whole modern opera.

Its really rare to have a reaction video actually add substantive content about the song. The level of emotional, musical, and historic context in this reaction really helps me appreciate this song on a different level. Its long, but if you love music its well worth it. Dont go changin

"Hi Amy" ... I love your breakdown on this piece of art. I am glad you decided to react to an independent modern artist like Ren. His catalog of songs is actually quite deep. It was great to see a "classical" mind perspective on this performance and I look forward to more. new sub! ... much love!

This young gentleman is a Poet, Philosopher, Composer, Actor, Bard, Minstrel, Troubadour and Piper all-in-one. This was an amazing performance-art piece - ingenious, deeply moving, open, honest and profound. Two intensifying-soliloquies followed by an exquisite philosophical-monologue -just brilliant. The mature philosophy of that spoken monologue at the end was so astute and compelling that a verse from Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ came immediately to my mind…
    “And it's whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
    For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter”.
Tears of sorrow and joy came quite unbidden to my eyes and the impact of the complete piece sent me into intense introspection.
It reminded me of the way that I was recently emotionally moved by a well-done performance of Sir Edward Elgar’s cello masterworks.
Your review was educated and insightful and very well done. I appreciate your hard work bringing this to all of us. May you be blessed with continued peace and joy. Again, I thank you!

I have watched this video/reaction at least 50 times now and the most profound thing to me (besides the speech) is...
Temptation: I am Temptation, and I'm Immortal!
Hope: Oh yeah? Well I am HOPE, and I am ENTERAL! We are a coin of different sides.... 2 Opposing forces battling throughout the test of time.
Ren is has Shakespeare like level of writing ability (both musically and poetically) while being able to sing, rap, play instruments , and ACT. It's amazing!

Ren is a story teller, he calls his art Bard Core. In todays mash of over sexualised, over produced, formula driven so called music. Ren is a breath of fresh air. He is a social narrator and his message is relateable to so many. I think he is going to become a very important artist. His creativity and rawness is a gift to the listener.

Justin Hawkins (singer and guitarist of The Darkness) made a brilliant interview with him where he explained alot about how he basically had to fight to even get tested for certain markers and ended up sometimes making appointments at other doctors specialised on diseases which get diagnosed by similar or the same blood markers etc.
If you have a car journey ahead of ~1h30min i can only recommend it, it's a great listen.

I love that you mentioned Ian Anderson ... well, actually Jethro Tull, but Ian is obviously the most important part of the band. I've always considered Ian to be the greatest all-around musical genius, at least since the rock era began. And now since I've recently discovered Ren, I've been telling people that he's the first one in DECADES that can even approach Ian Anderson in sheer, all-around talent.

I enjoyed your analysis, as it was more astute than most reactors. I wanted to add an insight of my own, which your reaction helped me to articulate to myself and that I found compelling enough to share.
The falsetto section at the end has a significance to why it feels so triumphant. As the section is playing out, the lights are flickering, and Ren is using the haunting falsetto from the start, indicating the presence of the darkness. Yet, he's also standing and singing/playing more impassioned, with the guitar's driving force raising the listener up, all indicating the light's presence. The triumph is revealed to be more than just light overcoming darkness, and that the real victory is that the two sides have become one, as in the Yin/yang depiction or Ren's coin metaphor. That these two forces, when combined, and harnessed, can create astounding harmony and beauty. And, that beauty is able to be expressed when the person has risen above the ebb and flow to become the witness and bearer of the two extremes, rather than yanked into the tidepool of either. As mentioned at the end, it's not a battle to be won, but an eternal dance.
