this is an old video but STILL relevant. I can confirm- this works great. SO MUCH better than having to take half the top end apart just to get timing 'cover' off. Thanks for putting this out there.
i used this method on my 81 shovelhead. worked like a charm. used a small centre punch to locate the drill. helped elimnate any wandering. thanks large mate.
Thanks for the video brother! I had used this method on seals back on the farm. The reminder was spot on and I ordered a couple of seals to be safe. My 91 FXR purchase was pissin' oil from the hole beneath the timer cover. Now, she's leak free. Cheers! cb
Excellent video for sure. One suggestion is to suck those shavings out with a vacuum sweeper hose after drilling and again after removing the seal. Thanks for taking time to show how easily this is done.
Thanks Jeff. I would assume everyone would clean out the shavings and any remaining leaked oil (I hope). Yes, maybe I should have shown that bit but I really did think people would automatically clean the area so I edited that part out 😄
Thans Ken...i think i need to do this job. Just bought a FXR evo from 1990. Just degreased the engine and went for a test ride. I discovered the leak its comming from the nose cone.
Cheers Indo. If it's a very minor leak you'll be OK for a few hundred miles before it makes a huge mess or the oil level gets a bit too low. But best to fix it as soon as possible. Glad to help 👍
Nothing was damaged, scratched, or even scuffed in the process. The only damage is to the seal that gets thrown away. Interestingly, it is the way many authorised Harley mechanics do it, but charge for a full dismantle.
I know it’s an old video and not sure if you’re on here still but I am gonna tackle this today on my 93 FLSTC. Might be a dumb question but do I need to drain the oil before doing this? Didn’t seem like you did since you put it back together and fired it up and never mentioned draining.
Sorry Sean but I'm not familiar with Sportsters, only Big Twins. Pop the timing cover off and have a look. If you can see the seal under the timing plate you should be able to remove it.
While I've not done that particular seal, I have changed seals. The one thing I do differently, is use an awl and hammer instead of a drill. Easy, works well, and no metal filings. Good video thanks.
Sounds easier! but not everyone owns a slide hammer or knows how to make one. But you are more proof that dealers do it the easy way, not a total strip down which they often charge for. Thanks for your tip 👍
Would this be the same on a 79 shovelhead with an electronic ignition I saw oil right under the cover then saw it leaking out of the hole the wire comes out then all the way down the wire?
Kerhonkson Sewer The timing is set. It is an Injected model which cannot be altered. Timing is perfect. I did cover that point twice in the Video. At 0:46 and at 9:44

Very helpful information, was hoping it Would be this easy. I will be changing mine as soon as the seal comes in. Thanks
Good luck. It's really easy.
@@Ken_James_SV all set, no more leak. Thanks again!!
@@raymondsadowski6080 Good to hear. Pass this method on to others 👍

Cheers Jim Bob. Look after the old girl 👍

@@Ken_James_SV If i don't fix it the engine will be covered in oil. Making a big mess on my back yard and upsetting my wife lol.
@@Indobiker61 - Sounds like you need to do it right now!
I got parts today but the seal had to be ordered..
This is a good example on how to fix one thing and scratch the crap out of the other

Do you have a part number for the seal?
You will probably find that it is Part Number 83162-51 Camshaft Oil Seal for HD 1970-98
Great info bro...truly is the easy way without removing frnt pipe and cone to drive out old seal..and fast!!! THANX
Glad to help.
Does this apply to early model sportsters… 91 for instance.

- Great idea. Thanks for the tip.
What's an awl?
@@jimmyjennings4089 - a sharp metal spike.
It's even easier if you drill one hole and use a slide hammer. I used to work in a dealership

Jimmy, the seal may not be the exact same part number as the Evo seal but it will be the same setup. Seals haven't changed much. Use the same method.
greattttt .. it is exactly what i have to do in my bike (FXR)..... Cheers .
nice job like your accent do you sell blenders?
Nah, just Boomerangs 😄
Timing looks way too advanced
