    Personally, I'd have to say the most effective scare tactic used with Doctor Who would be the BBC's old video junking policy. Absolutely terrifying!

      Hey there Lloyd! You know, I haven't had the pleasure of that novel. Sounds like I should? :)

    I remember the maggots in the Green Death scaring the crap out of me as a kid. Plus, that story was bittersweet for me, as Katy Manning was leaving....

    • @jarnopp
      @jarnopp  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, those maggots are nasty. They look convincingly fleshy, don't they!

    I still remember the sea devils comings out of the waves but I think the screeching outro noise was the biggest scare tactic!

    I have to say hats off to body horror as the most effective scare in Doctor Who - e.g. The Ark in Space- H.R. Giger at Saturday tea time would've put you right off your crispy pancakes 🙂

    • @jarnopp
      @jarnopp  4 місяці тому +1

      Hehe, indeed! A man turning into a giant insect really was quite bizarre and Kafka-esque for a Saturday night prime-time show.

    I think another thing Doctor Who does really well with its scares is stuff like the autons and weeping angels, everyones seen a window shop dummy or a statue of an angel somewhere and playing on that genius of creepy everyday objects being an alien threat is brilliant.

    5:05 I've seen lots of people angry that they will never know what she said. But knowing what it was could never be as good as the mystery of imagining what could be so terrible that it made people run away. People seem to need everything spelt out in their entertainment today 😩

      @jarnopp  4 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely. I'd hate to have been told what she said. We can each project our own ideas onto it. 😊👊

    For me, the best scare tactic was having our hero flitter between light and shadow, occasionally violent and with an alien disregard to human feeling. I'm not sure I could separate Tom Baker from the evil monsters as a child. Even when he smiled at Liz Sladen, there was a sense of darkness and danger just hiding around the corner in his face. When the Tom Baker intro rolled was the show ever really safe again?

    • @jarnopp
      @jarnopp  4 місяці тому

      Very good points, David! And how about the Fourth Doctor momentarily seeming tempted by the Key To Time's all-consuming power? 👀😲

    Top vid! Regarding horror in DW, when is there going to be a Jason Arnopp story on TV Who? 😊
    Btw, the poll where 38% would love to write fiction but don’t is interesting. It’s not as if you need special equipment to write - only a writing implement, some paper and good knowledge of a language! So what’s stopping anyone if they would love to write? Or have they interpreted it as to write as a PROFESSIONAL writer?

    • @jarnopp
      @jarnopp  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks Jon! Would be great to write for the TV Who.
      Re writing, you'd be amazed at all the psychological barriers and self-limiting beliefs that hold people back from writing. And that's part of the reason why I started offering coaching for writers last year! Seemed so sad that so many people either feel they can't write or can't carry on with it.

      @@jarnopp I can believe it, really. I’m sure there’s many reasons. When I was little, from moment I learnt to read and write (and I’m sure this applies to lots of children), I was writing stories all the time without thinking about it, and typing at least one on mum’s old typewriter when I was 10. Always writing fantasy and futuristic stories. But by time you get into your teens, other things begin to dominate your life, then if you have a full-time job, then of course a girlfriend, then maybe a family, it’s difficult to find time to be creative because it’s being eaten up by so many other things.
      So basically, growing up stinks! Lol 🤣🤣🤣

      @@jarnopp yes, I’ve thought about it. Not as if I totally stopped though, it’s just priorities. I was a comicbook reviewer for industry trade paper Comics International for 10yrs till around 2011 when the publisher Dez Skinn, he who had created the Dr Who mag years earlier, decided to sell it, but instead the publication ended up closing down. It was great experience and I very quickly learnt a lot about the craft of writing, even though they were reviews, not creative writing. You probably felt the same writing reviews for Kerrang. And I still do write parts of stories and plan out story ideas, but mostly nothing gets beyond that stage, though there’s a short story of mine online.
      So always lots of ideas, hardly anything finished! 🤣
