What an eloquently and beautifully spoken woman, I’m really in awe. Her voice, her tranquil demeanor.. She’s so calming. If, god forbid, I’m ever in such a terrifying situation, I can only pray I’m next to her! She would’ve been my saving grace. Bless her for the way she told this story, as not to be too graphic or detailed for Jennifer’s loved ones. Beautiful interview.
4 years on and this incident has just been featured on UA-cam, The Flight Channel. It has the original pilot audio and what is interesting is that she (Tammie Jo Shults) also has a calm demeanor - unbelievably so when considering the extreme pressure she was under.
Dear Professor Mackey, Thank you for such a straight forward interview and account of that incident. I'm a general aviation pilot, former firefighter and later crisis counselor. While I have an appreciation for the explosive decompression, noise, cold and pandemonium which ensued, I'm taken back by some of the comments here. I really appreciated your empathetic, direct account.
It's so distressing that so many people say cruelly blunt and judgmental things on social media, only because they are hidden behind their phone or computer screen. No one knows what it would be like to be in this woman's shoes, I'm sure she is struggling with lots of "what ifs", and judgmental mean spirited statements are truly unnecessary. She was asked to describe her personal experience, which I think she did very well. She happen to live through a situation that was incredibly scary and sad. She shared that she could have been in the seat Jennifer was in and lost her life and she didn't have to share that at all; she could have kept that a secret her whole life, and no one would know, but she shared it. I admire her courage for doing an interview after such a horrible event.
@@alphonsozorro7952I truly feel sorry for every person who has ever met you and especially for your family members and anyone else who has no choice but to be near you and all of the toxins that you spew on anyone in your vicinity.
Thank you for sharing your story and for the respectful manner in which you present it. I would think Jennifer's family are grateful that you were there, and you cared, and you did what you could. ♡
I guarantee you, PTSD will follow the passengers for years to come. The Professor was very articulate in her description of that horrific event. Well done interview
Tragedy has no political component! The comments about liberals (I am a staunch conservative) are so off base that they are sickening. This woman was sucked out immediately by a force so strong that it almost brought down the aircraft. She was pulled into -65 degree temperatures and 500 mph slip stream. She was more than likely killed immediately and surely was unconscious and didn't know what hit her. The details of her injuries shouldn't be published and would only be interesting to the macabre reader. Let the heroes be heroes and tragedy be a lesson that life is fragile. We are all lucky to be alive for the short time we are. It is your opportunity to make it count if you choose, or you can choose to waste your time thinking and projecting that everything is stacked against you and those others with your same belief!
i agree with everything until the very end. some of us do have a system stacked against us. it doesn't mean we cannot overcome it, but people have things stacked against them.
I love what she said. “[As a mother/mentor/teacher] In so many ways, I was terrified at so many different points that day...then you look around and realize you have to model something else...[you see others worse off than you and so] you have to be what you don’t feel...because if you don’t, other people wont know how to...if you can, you should.”-Hollie Mackey
It appears that the people who are upset by the way this lady is telling the story (calm), they came here hoping to hear all the gory details. That's pretty morbid.
It's called, "curiosity", and it's actually pretty common. It's why we have the term, "rubber-necking", an activity that most of us are guilty of. I agree that, under these circumstances (where the family members could've been exposed to all of the gory details), the woman didn't go into a long diatribe, describing the victim's injuries. However, there is nothing shameful about wondering about such details. Most of us will never come upon a situation like this and, I, myself, am curious as to what this accident did to the victim's body. If that makes me a bad person, then you'll have to lump all of the doctors, on Earth, into the same category (no pun intended). All animals are curious...Even Humans.
@@Newton14alan being curious as to what this accident did to the victim's body is pretty morbid. And morbid being...( appealing to an abnormal and unhealthy interest in disturbing and unpleasant subjects, especially death and disease)....
I think that people might be irritated with her because after she could not pull her in she did nothing. Well the woman possibly was suffocating to death she did not press the call button to get the flight attendant, and just sat there hoping that the flight attendants would find out about the problem using telepathy.
@@emmas1082 we were NOT in her place so we don’t know what she was doing/thinking. Shit I would have passed out of fear. We can’t judge someone over something we were not a part of
@@emmas1082 I don’t think the flight attendants are allowed to leave their seats or oxygen supply to help passengers until they are cleared to do so. There wasn’t much she could do. Maybe she could’ve shouted to see if any stronger people would’ve been willing to risk leaving their oxygen supply and come help, but they do tell you in the safety presentation to make sure you help yourself before trying to help others.
This woman is incredible! Her calm telling in detailed, organized fashion of the events just floored me. Her husband’s decision not to tell their children what happened until she was home was just the right thing to do. This family must be awesome. Prayers to Jennifer and her family too.
I think the reason why she's describing the scene in a calm way is for the sake of Jennifer's family and friends. They would not want to think of her last moments being described to the world. All of the gory details.
This is exactly right. She does not want Jennifer's children to see or hear anything unnecessary. A horrific event like this should not become fodder for the macabre and curious. Thanks for thinking of others the way Dr. Mackey was.
God bless you for your bravery and love. I am aircrew myself and have been through several emergency situations . Your efforts to help a stricken passenger, while not as heroic as you describe others, are no less important or noteworthy. I have seen seasoned veterans sieze up in emergancies, and become utterly useless. Take comfort in the fact that you did what you could, and never doubt that those efforts made a difference. It is obvious to all of us.
This lovely woman has such a beautiful soul and has the wisdom, calm judgement and loving desire to share all of these things with those she meets. May God bless her life with the same gifts she so openly shares with us.
I remember the event and can't believe it's been a year since it happened... Hollie Mackey told her story of what happened extremely well with details, compassion, clarity, and sincerity in a very thoughtful and articulate manner and I commend her for how she spoke and what she said.!!! A very good, strong and caring person and so much more... I have a lot of respect and gratitude for Hollie Mackey, the whole flight crew and all that did what they could during this tragic emergency...
Although I thought watching this video would be hard... Instead it’s comforting to know you were with Jennifer and you remember her as a lovely person. She is all of that and much more!!! Shes a successful career woman and raises her children making look easy. Jennifer loved to laugh, have fun, and focused on today to make it count. We’re going to miss her so much. Knowing this wonderful personal speaking about it, we know you were with her......... Thank you, know that what you did is such a beautiful act of caring for someone you didn’t know it tells a lot about you. Such honesty, and integrity!! Where there is tragedy there will be a victory. Have peace in your mind and heart God has it all under control. Even when the situations are catastrophic......... Everything will be fine.
Chuck P [again] Oh!! Really!? Can you prove it, beyond a shadow of doubt? I saw another interview with this lady, and she says things she didn’t say as she is now......
Chuck P [again] Lol! 😂😂. Yes, at 1st I posted it on this video on another of your posts below...... No doubt these days everything is now called to the spot light in FAKE everything!! It’s annoying! However, I do notice that the tube doesn’t not post my comments or when I post but I don’t ever add a link for info. The thinking wheel is turning forever then it locks up my computer. They must think I spend all my days and 24 hrs. I’m on their websites. And, of course there is always going to that doubt factor about why and why now for the events that are currently going on right now. That is creating a host of fears and doubts into our minds. Kids can look on all the comments I’m sure with that young mind growing is being effective in causing an unrest and fear in the kids and adults. Leading the American people and abroad to question everything, look at everything with the glass half full, and protests, there is much division between everyone across the world. Divide and conquer? Coordinated or not.
Wtf ru talking about? Everything isn’t “fine” for Jennifer. This woman dropped the ball. She was Jennifer’s only hope and not only didn’t she pull Jennifer back out of the window, she didn’t leave her seat or even flag anyone down to help until it was far too late and Jennifer had already long since suffocated to death.
@@devitomichael she died of blunt force trauma. Even if this woman and a teenager had been able to fpull her in, its very likely she was killed when she was first partially ejected. Not to mention the immense pressure at that height. The successful attempt to pull her in was done by two men at a lower altitude after the emergency descent, meaning the pressure was less.
I am proud of the respect that this woman shows and her use of Jennifer's name...to have a near stranger, use her name...to remember her and to be there when she passed...that in itself took remarkable strength...to stay with Jennifer until help got to her....amazing.
The heartbreak of knowing you were a part of Jennifer's last moments, the peace that you had done everything you could do for her but were able to protect that young girl, there is the source of her peace.
Diva Diva68 you are so right unless you were there in the airplane at that time you have no idea what it was like it's very easy to be a Monday Morning Quarterback and say I would have did this I would have did that but if you aren't there at that moment you really have no idea what was going on in that time. And instead of being supportive because this is internet is all Anonymous now people give their opinion or their conspiracy theory about what happened and what didn't happen it's a really sad sad day
Prove it. I see a blurry shadow that some idiots might misconstrue as blood. Prove it's blood. It doesn't look anything like blood to me. Oh, and did you know you have no content on your channel? Nor do you have any tab thingys on your page . Not cool dude.
Let Us Make Man In Our Vanity you sound like a major creep, talking about some "prove its blood". Like really F'ed up in the head type to not believe that a womans body was probably tore up from being PARTIALLY OUTSIDE AT 30,000 FT WHEN THE WIND IS 500 MPH & YOUR BOTTOM HALF IS SITTING STILL!!!
What a tragedy to have thrown on you & all the passengers & crew. The immediate impact of fear does not set in, only survival. I pray the woman who lost her life did not suffer and commend those those that DID try to help in unimaginable moments. God Bless you all!
God Bless you for telling your story. You are very courageous and you did more for those around you then you realize. Stay strong. We don't always realize why we are the ones still standing after a tragedy but there is a reason! You are amazing!
What the Hell is wrong with you people who think this is fake? Come on guys. It happened. It’s real. It’s sad and it sucks, but don’t condemn this poor witness for speaking out about it or dream up conspiracy theories because you think she should be “acting” a different way. We all process things differently. One individual’s reaction is going to be different than another’s. There’s no right or wrong way to feel or act when someone witnesses a tragedy up close. It’s sad that instead of feeling compassion for what this woman went through, people question her and ridicule her. You should be ashamed of yourselves. “I would’ve done this... I would feel such and such a way...” How dare you? You’re not in her position. Be grateful for that. Not cynical. Christ.
Michelle Despres Thank you Michelle. This is the new ‘Great “ America. Prior to Trump, this heartbreaking story would have never been questioned. Now in this idiotic world of Trump people feel it is appropriate to be a bully, just like the great Trump himself. I am disgusted by what I am reading. I can’t imagine what Professor Mackie is dealing with right now. She did everything she could to help that poor woman. Shame on all of these idiots
What a sad thing to happen but what a beautiful soul the proffesor is.I can't imagine.Just pray for her family so tough. The pilot was a guardain angel by the sounds of it.Sounds like there were quite a few angels on board that flight.
ChrissyM --- The Captain was a HIGHLY TRAINED former MILITARY JET FIGHTER pilot. The safe landing was the result of EXPERT TRAINING, and you can THANK GOD for the intelligence in that.
I don't quite understand. She says that when the accident happened that Jennifer was in distress and then she never is specific about her being sucked out the window. So she was in distress and at what point did the window give out and she get sucked out? Also, she says that she and the teenager tried to pull Jennifer back in but couldn't and that the crew was not aware of what was happening in their row for some time. I"m sorry, but if one of my fellow passengers is half way out the plane I'm not going to sit there and comfort the other passenger, I'm going to be yelling at the top of my lungs for the crew or anyone to get over to help with the situation IMMEDIATELY!! Glad she and the other passengers and crew survived. But so sad for the victim and her loved ones.....
Chuck P [again]....I am retired FA. We are trained listen for unusual noises & changes in cabin temperatures & pressure. Oxygen masks falling is also a big sign that something drastic has happened. I am....stunned...that no one in the area screamed out that there was a woman being sucked out the aircraft!! These are the same folks who would ring the bell constantly for a pillow or blanket or can of Coke!
Agree to some extent here- I would have certainly tried to be more active, but then many people go into a passive mode like when in a hospital and they treat you like a child. She was thinking the crew had to have known what was happening when they did not. I'm an ex-Marine and my training is different than this lady who could not fully comprehend the situation. There was extreme danger to the passengers and airframe at the time of the decompression. Pulling Jennifer out of the window would have then allowed someone else to be sucked out or would have stressed the fuselage, which is designed to be pressurized at high altitude when the air pressure outside is very low. In a sense, Jennifer was the unwilling sacrifice who possibly saved the other passengers by slowing the rate of decompression when her body was plugging the hole. They only got Jennifer out of the window when the plane descended and the pressure outside was more equal to the pressure inside. Otherwise, the rescuers would also have been sucked out. I believe that Jennifer would have died nearly instantly, certainly unconscious when her head was outside at that altitude considering the wind speed of several hundred miles per hour, extreme cold, and lack of oxygen. Hard to imagine the trauma with all that happening.
When that engine lunched and the rapid decompression happened is when she went out. The pilot descended immediately this drama queen is lying. It took 2 minutes for that plane to get to 12K feet where you can breathe That was a rocket dive for sure but they stopped at 11 She claims she watched the safety briefing that comes before EVERY FLIGHT and could not put a yellow cup over her nose and a rubber band over her head? She is a Liar!
I've been in the aviation field for approximately 30 years as an avionics mechanic an airplane is one of the most safest places that you could possibly be most of the systems on the plane of redundant so if there is a failure of one there's another to take all them unfortunately the plane is pressurized for the comfort of the passages but when the pressure Dome is ruptured you have rapid decompression and usually when that happens you have catastrophic injuries... I noticed people are writing and saying they would have done this they would have done that but it's great to be a Monday Morning Quarterback unless you're a trained professional most people would not be able to process what's going on at that moment to be able to even help themselves so give the people a break it's a terrible thing that happened at something they all live through will probably affect them for the rest of their lives just like the woman Jennifer whose family will be affected for the rest of their lives.
one strong lady to go through that she will always see that in her mind, also the lady next to her, she did all she could do in he control, god was with them all.
In one sentence she says typically on long flights she would get a window seat to sleep but this time it was a very long flight so she took the aisle seat because she might get up a lot. So what is the difference between a "long flight" for which she would get a window seat to sleep, and a "very long flight" she wanted a aisle seat for?
bigpardner in another interview she describes that in the morning she had a very large coffee and she didn’t want to bother by going to the bathroom all the time. I feel like she should have said that in this interview cause it didn’t make sense to me either.
Her husband gets it, and I am sure her boys do as well....they have an incredible mom. A really stellar soul. I counsel emergency responders to help treat them for trauma. Having been a first responder, I can tell you that anyone can be profoundly affected by a traumatic event. Many, many people suffer PTSD and it is processed differently amongst individuals.
It amazes me all the "experts" who come crawling out to put in their two cents worth. I'm no expert but I do believe that unless you, yourself, are within these circumstances, you cannot know how or if you would react any differently. I, for one, admire this woman who at least made the attempt at helping and can calmly share her story. I have no idea how I would react but can only hope I have as much guts and determination that this woman had under such scary and trying circumstance.
Who could dislike a video like this? It is honestly super disrespectful to the flight attendants, pilots, and passengers and what they had been through. Shame on you.
So, she looked over and saw Jennifer in distress (sucked out of the plane) and then fiddled with her mask (she watched the demonstration but still didn't get it) then she tried to pull her back in but it was no use so she comforted the young girl with one hand while holding jennifer with the other. Then she waited several minutes for the stewardesses to work their way down the Isle (there was a baby that needed help) THEN they noticed that Jennifer needed some real help and not just a pat on the back and the alarm was finally raised. I'm sure Jennifer appreciated the comforting hand on her backside as she was wishing she was somewhere else but there. I'm thinking tho that she would rather have had the feel of many people pulling at her with enough force to yank her out of that nightmare. I'm sure she was just trying to be polite and not get hysterical but if there is ever a time to get hysterical that was it. At least there was no survivors remorse there. She was grinning so hard I thought her face was going to crack.
oh gosh yes, I wanted to slap your comment into this zombie professor's face. this woman is a scumbag, I am sure she was getting pleasure from what was happening, because she never got good dicks in life, her only pleasure is watching others suffer
This thread explains everything I am watching in this (sickening) interview. We don't know if Jennifer would have survived if pulled in immediately, but this intensely observant and emotionally thoughtful dingbat yo-yo is about the last person I would want near me in an emergency.
It's been several years since I have flown on an airliner, but I recall you had your seat assigned to you before you board, no? But she seems to speak as if she chose after getting on the plane to sit next to the wing and next to the aisle. What does she mean "the seats that I'd normally would have been closer" (to the front of the plane), that when she gets a ticket and chooses a seat she gets one up front if she can? But she sounds like this time she couldn't sit near the front so she picked a seat over the wing. Maybe things have changed since I flew and you are no longer assigned a seat ahead of time? Maybe a SW thing?
I understand the frustration because it seems that in this professor’s description that nobody helped Jennifer and that it took so long. But you have to remember a few things. In situations like these time feels slower so what could have actually been less than five minutes might have felt like twenty to them. I don’t think she wanted to described the sight of what was happening to Jennifer out of respect for her family and it was also probably hard to talk about for the professor. And for those of you that say why wouldn’t you be screaming at the top of your lungs to get help and that you would. You don’t know what you would’ve actually done in the situation. Fear is a big emotion and it leaves people frozen. Also they had oxygen masks on that didn’t seem to be working properly meaning they weren’t getting any oxygen or enough if you can’t breath you can’t scream. Also imagine how loud a plane is now the window is busted it’s a thousand times louder maybe they were trying to scream and nobody could hear them. You really shouldn’t judge the situation when you weren’t there and you don’t actually know what you would do. People helped they pulled her back in unfortunately the damage was done. My condolences to Jennifer’s family May she Rest In Peace 🙏🏻
Aircraft glass has to be strong enough to withstand extreme temp changes and strong enough to withstand the pressure changes. I have helped install it and it is heavy. You can just imagine what it would do to your head or body. The biggest threat is fire that is why you would sit near a exit.
Thank You so much Hollie for trying to help Jennifer, what an incredibly frightening experience,I doubt I could have done as well in that situation.I had worked for an air line for 30 years and never had a problem.I just don't know what to say,I really have no desire to travel by air now, maybe someday I will again.I'm so very sorry to all of you for that this happened. All the best!
You ma'am, are a beautiful person. Don't listen to the negativity. I don't think any of us mean it, rather, I think it is quite hard to imagine being in such a situation where you think your life is about to end and trying to imagine all the chaos that that must entail for everybody on that flight in that moment.
why wasn't this woman screaming for help and telling everyone around her that her seatmate was sucked halfway out the plane? Horrible tragic event, but she goes on about how the flight attendants were busy with other lesser matters until they themselves laid eyes on teh nightmare situation. If only the people who were able to act / pull the woman back into the aircraft had been made aware sooner
I agree she probably was so afraid and just do much to help doesn't want to admit it, putting hands on each others backs what does that do to help the women in "distress"
When relaying an event afterwards, there are some details the mind blots out as being too traumatic to remember. Who said they weren't screaming for help? The reality is that trying to pull in a body that is half out the window is almost impossible to do until you are closer to the ground. Go look up the story of the pilot who was sucked out the window. They couldn't pull him in till they landed, thankfully he survived but was traumatized. She may have realized already that the person was dead plus she, herself felt the force pulling her towards the window, rendering her weaker. The only way to know the truth is to have been there & seen it for yourself or if there was video footage that could partially tell the story.
Pixibelle It is too bad that you had to explain this, but many people out there just don't understand stuff like this. A plane going 300 MPH and tremendous suction. No they could NOT pull her back until the plane slowed down and lost altitude. It's not rocket science, but a bit to much for some on this site.
She was told over the wing was The safest place on an aircraft you have screaming turbines just outside your windows and your sitting on a wing full of fuel! The safest part is the rear as far as you can go that’s where the FDR & CVR are located since this is the most survivable area on board.
Everyone is saying why didn’t anyone scream for help , we’ll didn’t they all have masks on for breathing? People asking why it took so long for her to get pulled back inside , being up that high and so fast they are lucky to even have pulled her back in . The pressure sucking her out would be insane . Scary situation that we only fear could happen but never really see 😞
For this woman to say that Jennifer was in "distress" implies to me she was out of touch with reality. Distress is far too gentle of a word to describe what happened to Jennifer. This professor seemed to go on and on describing the comings and goings of flight attendants and other passengers all the while Jennifer's face was stuck outside being flailed to pieces by a 500 mile an hour wind. I strongly suspect this is what killed her, not engine shrapnel. This professor should have been screaming for help for Jennifer
James Neilson Graham I respect your comment. However, if that was you stuck outside with your body being crushed by a 500 mile an hour wind, I think you would want that professor to be screaming bloody murder for HELP!!!
Well literate people who are exposed to more than the stale vernacular of “like, lol, tmi, lit, omg, etc” use “distress” to describe situations where trauma is occurring. Have you never heard medical profesionales say “she was in distress so we gave her cpr”? Medical professionals seem pretty ok with the word “distress” to describe really bad health situations.
if the person sitting next to me was sucked out of the window, and i saw a flight attendant coming, but turned to help someone else...i'd be screaming my head off. like, "HEY THERES SOMEONE OUT THE FUCKING WINDOW!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!" that part is a little confusing to me.
You know unless you're in a situation, There's was time when i was watching a robbery or holdup crime documentaries, wherein the person they robbed was killed because that person didn't right away give her/his belonginds, I was like why didn't she/he give right away? Later I understand why, because i too was in a near death situation where I was robbed and was about to be killed, glad the police arived before he could pull the trigger, me and robber were like playing tug war because i won't let go of my bag, after that incident, they questioned me why i didn't gave my bag and I answered I couldn't think right fully at that time, maybe adrenaline rush
To the people saying why didn't she do this or that....why didnt say this or that.....i think she was trying to be respectful for the family.....i know I wouldn't want to have to watch or hear the gruesome details of my family members death or last minutes. Think about it that way and you'll understand.
Beautiful woman expressing how to have class. I can't imagine what everyone on that flight felt while this whole incident was happening. They say that we don't know our strengths until we only have that left with to handle such horrific accidents. My heart still breaks for her family, friends and the community that lost this wonderful woman. Never forgotten and may she rest high on that Mountain 🙏💔😢
Middle-aged and ugly, but the confusion comes from her good gesture, trying to save her travelling companion. Kindnes is not beauty, neither is celebrity. But the US public get mixed up all the time.
@@alphonsozorro7952 - It's you who cannot recognize beauty. It is neither youth nor mere prettiness. It comes from within. I hope someday you become mature enough to understand this truth.
It's such a crazy situation when you look at where the seat was to the engine and that the shrapnel hit her window when it seemed like the wing was blocking any direct path to that window.
Because she is a liberal idiot teacher. She made this about her. Here is a air traffic control recording of the event. ua-cam.com/video/cnSizWZVyD4/v-deo.html
This is the second Southwest plane! Same engine! Passenger compartment pierced and depressurized ! (The other southwest rapidly descended and landed in Pensacola Florida) I hope this ladies family asks some hard questions with a good lawyer. Such a nice person well liked loses her life over this. In my opinion someone screwed up letting this happen twice!!!
Willie Gillie ~~~~ I'm sure an attorney somewhere will make a good chunk of money by making a few phone calls and arranging payment to Jennifers family.
Ransom Prigg Its a shame it has to come to that. If the airlines and those that regulate them did a better job that fan blade may have been replaced. A damaged plane and destroyed engine isn't cheap either.
Michael Williamson Thank you for your sane comment. I cannot believe a lot of these comments. What is wrong with people these days. This is a terrible thing and a lot of these comments are so mean. I believe Hollie. People that were not in that situation do not know how anyone would react. And people that think it didn't happen, well I have no words. Also I am not related in any way, for anyone wondering.
@@ransomprigg1047 Exactly. I cannot imagine why she did not press the call button to get the flight attendant or scream to nearby passengers to help. When she was unable to pull her in she just sat down and acted helpless, she didn’t think it was enough of an emergency to run up the aisle and get the flight attendant? Instead everyone just rubbed each other‘s back‘s.
If you need help in a life-or-death emergency, it's not panicking if you scream for help. That's just using your resources. You truly need life-saving attention, and that's what screaming is for. It wouldn't have helped in this case, but precious time was lost because no one was assertive about getting help. Once the crew knew, she says the all sprang into action. No judgement - who knows what I would do in the same situation - but it's a lesson I hope someone takes home from this.
Distress is a ridiculous word for this scenario. It’s disastrous! Why her primal instincts didn’t kick in is evidence of her detachment from reality. Dissecting the scene is useless. Screaming is why we’re given vocal chords.
Um, er, Flight Attendant? Oh, Flight Attendant? There's a woman hanging out of the window over here. Could you do something about that? I'm trying to get some work done here.
This sort of disaster causes my vocal chords to close down, I can't even speak when I go through such traumatic experiences, let alone scream. We all react differently to these situations so don't judge her on her after report. Also keep in mind that a lot of the interview would have been edited out, so we are not really get the whole picture from this video.
Pixiebelle, I am like you. My vocal cords become useless in a state of emergency. I suppose it's shock. Nothing comes out . That only adds to the panic.
Sorry Folks! One-She NEVER declared an EMERGENCY, ATC even questioned her-"you're descending?" The closest she came to that was to say "roll the trucks" further into the event. Two-She accepted 11,000, emergency decent procedures call for an RAPID decent to 10,000. AND almost a total lack of CRM. I heard maybe 3 radio calls from the CoPilot. Was pretty much like a single Pilot operation. Bottom line-You declare, they move everyone out of your way AND YOU ARE NUMBER ONE!! And as most any Airline Pilot will tell you as a Professional, cool calm and collect performance is what's expected of you as a Professional Pilot.
yeah ; I was surprised she did not declare an emergency. She seemed to fluctuate between engine out/fire/no fire/ flying on one engine and stating some people were injured and one went out. She also said " part of the plane is missing ", which is not true as it was only a broken window. I expect the report she got from the crew was confusing her. She kept her cool and stayed detached, but maybe just a little too detached. Well, at least she did a great job bringing the plane down with one engine. It is not really easy. Lots of rudder to deal with.
Don Kiel she advised ATC of her situation and at that point they cleared the approach for her to land and ask her her if there's anything she needed.. it's not like the movies
Really? Your imagination is just that good. That you can imagine the situation and scenario to ask that question based off of a youtube interview. Like seriously. how can you possible question any ones response time or anything for that matter from behind a computer screen. this lady was there and involved and she isnt that crass at all. You have some audacity, I highly doubt you would have been anything other that a hysterical self preservationist .
NOBODY has on their oxygen masks on correctly. PLACE IT OVER YOUR NOSE & MOUTH!!!! How will you breathe in the oxygen you need!??? This is why folks need to PAY ATTENTION during the safety demonstrations!
You are requested to,keep your seat belt on if not getting up for the bathroom. There can be no warning for air turbulence. You don’t feel the oxygen flowing from the masks.
Such a tragic event especially for the diseased and her family. Just makes me wonder, Southwest doesn't assign seats? I've never flown with Southwest but with most other airlines, the crew won't allow changing seats out of whim.
I have flown SWA many times, from Dallas Love Field, they do not assign seats and never have. You pick your own seat. Passengers get assigned boarding groups like A,B, and C and a number and you board the plane based on your boarding letter and number, and that is assigned based on when your check in time was on the internet. Some people pay an extra $25 to get Priority boarding, which will allow you to preboard. Sadly, the passenger that died chose her seat. It was not a computer algorithm or the airline. What's really sadder is, Just really bad luck and a horrible twist of fate. Very tragic. My condolences to the passenger's family.
I e worked EMS since 2004 and had to do CPR on my own brother and immediately my training kicked in and Thank God I saved his life. There have been a lot of times if I see someone that doesn’t look ok (and no I’m not a nosy person) or need medical attention I go and help. Not that long ago I was driving down a street to get home and honestly this guy had his head what looked to me like leaning it on the driver side window and I went past him but immediately thought let me check on this guy so I reversed ( if I didn’t stop and he was having a heart attack or something else and I just went home and seen The next day guy found dead in his car I couldn’t live with that. I went back I probably drove like 7 feet passed and went back I honestly thought this guy was dead. I knocked on the window and it freaked me and out because he looked up and I told him I just wanted to check on you you’re head looked in a odd position and the guy was absolutely nice and said I appreciate that and he was filling out paperwork but I was shocked to see the guy was alive.
It didn't need to happen. I thought about the possibility of a piercing of windows in the early 1980s when, I was helping to take care of my Grandparents and I did a lot of flying. I did some inquiries into the cost of armoring the windows and it turned out that it was very doable and somewhat expensive. In 1983, I was in contact with PSA and at the time, I also ran a small machine shop; I offered to do a small run of armored glass for testing purposes. As with a lot of companies at the time, they turned out to be not too serious about the project. I don't believe that large companies such as PSA care about passenger's safety and I can feel that when I talk to representatives of the companies. I would like to meet Jennifer when, the End of the Age and Jesus arrive.
Three points: (1) why didn’t the flight attendants walk down the aisle to do an assessment immediately after the cabin depressurization? (2) trying to pull jennifer back into the plane would have been very difficult until the pilots took the plane to a lower altitude and the indoor pressure had a chance to be closer to the outdoor pressure. Try again! Another reason why flight attendants needed to know and to alert the pilots about what’s happening in the cabin. (3) what is it with people or the oxygen masks?
These are the people living among us....total and complete zombies. No emotions, no reaction...thanks to our wonderful era of cell phones. You're so numb and so concerned with what people around you think that you wouldn't stand on your chair and scream your head off trying to pull her in while screaming for help!!! I wouldn't want to be sitting next to this lady. I continually come across people like this...dry, numb, all zest for life sucked out of them. No reaction to anything, just getting through life half asleep. She's smiling while she tells the story???? This is so so shameful. Is this even freaking real??? I don't trust the media at all. Very funky story. She's not convincing at all. She's smiling while she's telling this story? And she's doing so 2 days after it happened? Lady, why aren't you under your covers in your bed crying your eyes out? You just watched a human being die in the second you turned your head and you were trying to put oxygen mask on while half her body was out? And you were waiting for flight attendants to come? How much did Southwest pay you to say the staff were remarkable? SMH. Ugly, ugly times we live in.
Chuck P [again] That makes a lot of sense. A close family member is in Marketing and they always tell me how everything is PR, especially when it involves government and corporations (one in the same) It's just another illusion they're creating to make us believe something that furthers their agenda. And the masses fall for all this on a daily basis.
People react to emergencies in different ways. To say that this lady should have done this or that, should have reacted in a particular way in a traumatic situation, is to show a failure of imagination. We cannot know the situation, cannot know the pressures, cannot know how we ourselves would act. I do not think her account is cold or lifeless. I find it detailed and vivid. Smiling can sometimes be a sign of sadness, then the tears come . . .
Chucky is jealous that he didn't get the five grand to tell a false story. Your paranoia is fascinating, but a little bit sick. Why don't you go out and get some exercise. It will help clear your head.
On a flight from Houston to Dallas I boarded a SW flight. We sat in out seats about 30 minutes. We were told we had to change planes. No explanation was given. We got all our overhead luggage and moved to another plane. I like to sit in the port side of the plane about the 5th row back in a window seat. I was looking at the port engine which had the cowling open. There was a mechanic doing something to it. In a few minutes he stepped back from the engine, had what looked like 18" screw driver in his hand. As he was fastening the cowling back down he was shaking his head in a 'NO' fashion. All I could say to myself "Lord keep your hand on this Flight". We made it to Dallas. No telling what he was looking at or working on.
scary hein ? I used to look out and check the rivets and I would often find many missing.....I even reported it once.....I am just a private pilot but I know when we do our walk around the plane we are about to fly, we look for anything suspicious ; lots of missing rivets would be.
IMO medical opinion the victim would have probably lost consciousness very quickly. She had no oxygen like the other passengers who had oxygen masks and that would have caused her to black out. I would also consider that the original impact as she flew out could have caused a traumatic loss of consciousness. Either way, I doubt she suffered much if any.
Terrible story telling. Its okay to say the lady was sucked out the window, not she was in distress. BE REAL. Thats like saying JFK was in Distress in the back of the limo
Chuck P [again] do you know what traumatic shock is? You just watched a video, in fine detail of it occurring. As well as her guilt that she didn't take the window seat.
Chuck P [again]... Bahahaha ..obviously you do "care" in an obnoxious attempt of trying to control others by bullying and insulting them...you chose to attack me and it didn't work. Need a blankie, a binky and a safe spot to cry/scream in chucky?
So what exactly happened then? Thankfully Air crash investigation will let us know. This woman gives me an untrustworthy sense/feeling. She does seem very comfortable, seems something is fake here.
Agreed -- overly dramatic -- "having a foreboding feeling" -- BS! She keeps calling her Jennifer, she didn't even know her name at the time! Practiced, like a speech. Repeats what she's already said, she should have been YELLING for help from the flight attendant.
What do you think is going on then? Christ.
Don't be naive, the Press pays plenty for commenting on a situation, and they goad the witness into exaggerating most of the time. She should have said "no comment." Today, the Press makes a mini-movie out of a witness's comments, the witnesses are usually told ahead of time, they appear in full make-up and with hair newly coiffed! AND they have their "moment in the sun" so they make the most of it.
Sadly, you are 100% right, but one cannot account for the greed in people, the rampant fake news by the Press whose motto is: "If it bleeds, it leads" so whatever is the most sensational, that is what they will print, true or not. AND, they pay people PLENTY to lie or embellish or exaggerate a story so their ratings will go up! That is one reason why I don't believe half of the BS "news" that we're exposed to daily. But it"s truly a shame how readily people will lie for money, AND let reporters pump them and put words in their mouth and the dumb person will agree to that statement so then they're "quoted" as saying that.
This gal is really pretty sweet. You can tell she's educated by how well spoken she is. Very articulate. What an awful and also bizarre tragedy. To this lady, be sure and take good care of yourself. You might end up suffering from some post trauma. If you start feeling down and out, please try to talk to someone about it. PTSD can come up out of nowhere and oftentimes ppl don't get proper attention. Just don't feel bad if you're feeling emotional. Or numb. Whatever. Just reach out, let someone help. And this is to anyone, you're not alone. If you don't feel like talking to anyone, then you can even text someone! Yep. Crisis text hotline. From a cell you text HOME to 741741. You're not alone you really aren't. And you shouldn't be either! God bless these gals who tried their best to help. And All the other people who helped also. Stay strong! I bid you all well. So sorry to the loved ones of the lovely lady who was lost in tragedy. Idk any of these folks but I've prayed for all of them. My condolences @]>,-'----
She's already starting to have some symptoms survivor's guilt because originally the seat that she chose and then changed. Most people never experienced something like she did a catastrophic failure and it cost a person their life. If you notice the three people that tried to assist her one was the nurse the other was a fireman and the other one was an EMT all these people are trained for something like this and when it happens it just kicks in. In her talking you can hear her saying that she feels some form of responsibility for not being able to help her then she did what she could do by placing her hand on her. Not knowing her only from the interviews that she's given you can tell that she's a good person and hopefully she can get some assistance for her and her family
Jr Gt her and the lil pregnant gal did what they could. This is truly just one of hose bizarre and unexpected and tragic situations. Idk this gal although she’s a professor at my alma mater. But hopefully ya know, having a husband and boys and being educated, hopefully she’ll recognize, or a family member will be able to see and help if she starts slipping. Some people don’t even realize when they start slipping into the throes of PTSD. That was me. And smh, it was literally trauma on trauma on trauma etc It was very bad . Which is why I sure hope she’s got strong and attentive people around her. I think she’ll be ok. You’re spot on though. She’s already asking the survivors guilt “WHY” questions. A lot of ppl don’t understand how life altering an experience like this can be. Notwithstanding, there’s no telling how much her and the lil pregnant gal actually saw. By that I just mean seeing a death is bad enough but graphic ones make it even more difficult. Imo that is. I was downtown OKC on April 19, 1995, Alfred P Murrah federal building. I remember thinking, “I will never witness something this horrific again in my lifetime.” And I was 100% sure of that too. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I was right about part of it though. I suspected I’d never see so much blood again. Knock on wood. Uhh. It was very violent and graphic, there were body parts but mostly a ppl covered in blood. I can still smell burned-ammonium nitrate and blood if I think about it. So ya anyway, I bet this gal will weather the storm. I think they’re going to be ok. She really did such a great interview.
You are calming
Thank you
P
Couldn't agree more
4 years on and this incident has just been featured on UA-cam, The Flight Channel. It has the original pilot audio and what is interesting is that she (Tammie Jo Shults) also has a calm demeanor - unbelievably so when considering the extreme pressure she was under.
Aw❤
Dear Professor Mackey,
Thank you for such a straight forward interview and account of that incident. I'm a general aviation pilot, former firefighter and later crisis counselor.
While I have an appreciation for the explosive decompression, noise, cold and pandemonium which ensued, I'm taken back by some of the comments here. I really appreciated your empathetic, direct account.
I like how she told her story but I don’t like the fact that nobody thought to press the intercom button to get the fight attendant.
What a beautiful, thoughtful, kind person.
"beautiful", lol!
Tom Kirchhofer, true, life is fragile, bless you
God Bless you sir
i agree with everything until the very end. some of us do have a system stacked against us. it doesn't mean we cannot overcome it, but people have things stacked against them.
But it is the evil of liberals that mske a short life seem so unbearably long
Tom Kirchhofer thank you.
I love what she said. “[As a mother/mentor/teacher] In so many ways, I was terrified at so many different points that day...then you look around and realize you have to model something else...[you see others worse off than you and so] you have to be what you don’t feel...because if you don’t, other people wont know how to...if you can, you should.”-Hollie Mackey
i agree 🤍 I was reading your comment while she said this.
Or this her personality, not everyone is hyper and dramatic.
Such a Sad Situation
Turberlence
I'm sure she is a lady of dignity and respect for others, one that many women could take a lesson from.
This is exactly right. She does not want Jennifer's children to see or hear anything unnecessary. A horrific event like this should not become fodder for the macabre and curious. Thanks for thinking of others the way Dr. Mackey was.
Give this woman a break, I am sure that this was a VERY traumatic experience and retelling it very difficult.
@@devitomichael - Tell me you're a hater without telling me you're a hater. Or maybe you just hate women. You should be ashamed of yourself.
What amazing composure! Talk about “Grace under fire!”......
Thank you for sharing your story. My heart goes out to her family and also to you. What a horrible thing to experience.
The heartbreak of knowing you were a part of Jennifer's last moments, the peace that you had done everything you could do for her but were able to protect that young girl, there is the source of her peace.
Let’s not judge her we weren’t on that plane. Easier said than done.
Diva Diva68 you are so right unless you were there in the airplane at that time you have no idea what it was like it's very easy to be a Monday Morning Quarterback and say I would have did this I would have did that but if you aren't there at that moment you really have no idea what was going on in that time. And instead of being supportive because this is internet is all Anonymous now people give their opinion or their conspiracy theory about what happened and what didn't happen it's a really sad sad day
Excellent virtue signaling. You two are professionals.
I wasn't on that plane, but I think I know an English Prof when I hear one..........
Correction, a comment below say she is a feminist Gender Studies Prof, that explains it even better.
I enjoyed your interview. Very informative and sentimental. God bless you and the family of the lady who God received that unforgettable day.
I can’t imagine seeing that , I pray she felt no pain , i wonder how long she was out of the window , sounds like a while , so sad
Long enough to bleed out. Blood streak from window to tail attests to that.
Prove it. I see a blurry shadow that some idiots might misconstrue as blood. Prove it's blood. It doesn't look anything like blood to me.
Oh, and did you know you have no content on your channel?
Nor do you have any tab thingys on your page . Not cool dude.
Looks like a dark shadow that covers the rest of the underside of the plane. Not blood.
You would do like this woman did and rise to the occasion trying to do whatever you could.
What a fascinating and well-spoken woman. Her depth and perspective is amazing.
God Bless you for telling your story. You are very courageous and you did more for those around you then you realize. Stay strong. We don't always realize why we are the ones still standing after a tragedy but there is a reason! You are amazing!

Now in this idiotic world of Trump people feel it is appropriate to be a bully, just like the great Trump himself. I am disgusted by what I am reading.
Selfish pricks humans are
Stone W... You are absolutely right! (retired FA)
It took 2 minutes for that plane to get to 12K feet where you can breathe
That was a rocket dive for sure but they stopped at 11
She claims she watched the safety briefing that comes before EVERY FLIGHT and could not put a yellow cup over her nose and a rubber band over her head? She is a Liar!
So sad.. I could never forget this devastating trauma..
I noticed people are writing and saying they would have done this they would have done that but it's great to be a Monday Morning Quarterback unless you're a trained professional most people would not be able to process what's going on at that moment to be able to even help themselves so give the people a break it's a terrible thing that happened at something they all live through will probably affect them for the rest of their lives just like the woman Jennifer whose family will be affected for the rest of their lives.
one strong lady to go through that she will always see that in her mind, also the lady next to her, she did all she could do in he control, god was with them all.
then why did he let the engine blow up and suck a lady out the window????
In one sentence she says typically on long flights she would get a window seat to sleep but this time it was a very long flight so she took the aisle seat because she might get up a lot. So what is the difference between a "long flight" for which she would get a window seat to sleep, and a "very long flight" she wanted a aisle seat for?
bigpardner in another interview she describes that in the morning she had a very large coffee and she didn’t want to bother by going to the bathroom all the time. I feel like she should have said that in this interview cause it didn’t make sense to me either.
bigpardner Who cares? She didn’t cause the accident!
No one is prepared for something like that you are still a hero
It amazes me all the "experts" who come crawling out to put in their two cents worth. I'm no expert but I do believe that unless you, yourself, are within these circumstances, you cannot know how or if you would react any differently. I, for one, admire this woman who at least made the attempt at helping and can calmly share her story. I have no idea how I would react but can only hope I have as much guts and determination that this woman had under such scary and trying circumstance.
I find the negative comment's unfair and I don't think they realize the feeling you get in that situation,
Wow i can only imagine the horror she had to go though in that moment of tragedy. Rip to the woman who died...🌈
Tragedy 😢
Ransom Prigg She's a hardcore feminist Gender Studies professor. Sadly, this is what they are like.
oh gosh yes, I wanted to slap your comment into this zombie professor's face. this woman is a scumbag, I am sure she was getting pleasure from what was happening, because she never got good dicks in life, her only pleasure is watching others suffer
This thread explains everything I am watching in this (sickening) interview. We don't know if Jennifer would have survived if pulled in immediately, but this intensely observant and emotionally thoughtful dingbat yo-yo is about the last person I would want near me in an emergency.
Did jennifer not have her seatbelt on like she was instructed?
It's been several years since I have flown on an airliner, but I recall you had your seat assigned to you before you board, no? But she seems to speak as if she chose after getting on the plane to sit next to the wing and next to the aisle. What does she mean "the seats that I'd normally would have been closer" (to the front of the plane), that when she gets a ticket and chooses a seat she gets one up front if she can? But she sounds like this time she couldn't sit near the front so she picked a seat over the wing. Maybe things have changed since I flew and you are no longer assigned a seat ahead of time? Maybe a SW thing?
Perhaps my answer: thetravelsisters.com/southwest-airlines-seating-tips-how-to-get-a-good-seat-on-southwest-airlines/
Southwest let's you sit wherever you choose
My arms are aground you all! My heart goes you to you all as well!
why wasn't this woman screaming for help and telling everyone around her that her seatmate was sucked halfway out the plane?
Horrible tragic event, but she goes on about how the flight attendants were busy with other lesser matters until they themselves laid eyes on teh nightmare situation. If only the people who were able to act / pull the woman back into the aircraft had been made aware sooner
I agree she probably was so afraid and just do much to help doesn't want to admit it, putting hands on each others backs what does that do to help the women in "distress"
realrayra think it was SELF EVIDENT WHEN THE WINDOW BLEW AND PEOPLE ACROSS SAWMIT SHERLOCK
When everyone "knows they are going to die" their reactions will be different than the armchair annalists who were not there.
I dont understand though how exactly did Jennifer die??
@JH1234 Im literally asking how it wasnt mentioned in the video
Did the decompression rip the woman out of her seat belt or didn't she have it on?
Jerry Foreman
FAA reports she was wearing it.
Jerry Foreman ~~~ if she was wearing it she wasn't wearing it very well.
Scary situation that we only fear could happen but never really see 😞
And it’s also been said that it was incredibly loud in the cabin
Is there any video of the plane actually landing?
I think they got into another dimension. Have you seen Manifest? They will appear in 2025
For this woman to say that Jennifer was in "distress" implies to me she was out of touch with reality.
I am glad the lady interviewed spoke in a measured way. Understatement is sometimes more effective at conveying trauma than over-statement . . .
James Neilson Graham I respect your comment. However, if that was you stuck outside with your body being crushed by a 500 mile an hour wind, I think you would want that professor to be screaming bloody murder for HELP!!!
The nurse who gave CPR said there was very little blood but you could tell that she had a massive amount of trauma to the head/face.
Chuck P [again] you don’t have to be a physician to use the term “distress”.
if the person sitting next to me was sucked out of the window, and i saw a flight attendant coming, but turned to help someone else...i'd be screaming my head off. like, "HEY THERES SOMEONE OUT THE FUCKING WINDOW!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!" that part is a little confusing to me.
I was thinking the same.
Very sad for Jennifer and her family, and so glad everyone made it thru it to talk about what happened
She has so much grace about her.
I would love to take her class. She seems like an amazing professor.
God Bless You! I hope you find serenity and please see someone for PTSD. 🙏💪❤
You gave an amazing story. You are a hero - don’t ever forget that.
For how long was the woman's torso out of the window?
Thank you very much for your help.
No one called out that she was hanging out of the plane? I am not sure why no one realized other than those in her row?
And even then they would be expected to yell out or scream. This is bewildering.
Because she is a liberal idiot teacher. She made this about her.
Here is a air traffic control recording of the event.
ua-cam.com/video/cnSizWZVyD4/v-deo.html
Wondering why it took so long for other on plane to realize that a woman was getting sucked out of a window.
Bcause it was a rapid decompression!!!
Wow this lady is awesome she would be perfect as a first responder if this how calm she was during that time as well.
God bless you lady!🙏🙏🙏
RIP Jennifer
If she hadn’t drank so much coffee before boarding it would have been her. What a horrifying incident to live through.
This woman is a professor?
Lets count our blessings and hope the next time we fly, we have a seat companion like Hollie Mackey.
Michael Williamson ~~~ I'd rather sit next to the guys that pulled Jennifer back into the plane.
People react to traumatic situations in different ways. Not sure that screaming would have helped. It usually makes them worse . . .
It didn't happen
This is a completely sincere person. I know because I am one.
No heros because they took their time to help her........ how long was she dangling outside the plane before they came to help????????🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Really? Your imagination is just that good. That you can imagine the situation and scenario to ask that question based off of a youtube interview. Like seriously.
how can you possible question any ones response time or anything for that matter from behind a computer screen.
this lady was there and involved and she isnt that crass at all. You have some audacity, I highly doubt you would have been anything
other that a hysterical self preservationist .
This woman is so humble.
The back of the airplane is the safest
I e worked EMS since 2004 and had to do CPR on my own brother and immediately my training kicked in and Thank God I saved his life. There have been a lot of times if I see someone that doesn’t look ok (and no I’m not a nosy person) or need medical attention I go and help. Not that long ago I was driving down a street to get home and honestly this guy had his head what looked to me like leaning it on the driver side window and I went past him but immediately thought let me check on this guy so I reversed ( if I didn’t stop and he was having a heart attack or something else and I just went home and seen
The next day guy found dead in his car I couldn’t live with that.
I heard a totally different story in the news about who was sitting next to Jennifer.
Can you post a link to it.
Here is the air traffic control recording.
ua-cam.com/video/cnSizWZVyD4/v-deo.html
The news is as reliable as wet toilet paper
Chuck P / Just look at the outside cabin where the window was blown out with blood on the windows and fuselage . Your what's wrong with today !
What is OU?
Oklahoma University
Smiling can sometimes be a sign of sadness, then the tears come . . .
You conspiracy theorists are all too much! Paranoid daily? But you buy a virgin birth story? Get some mental health services.
Chucky is jealous that he didn't get the five grand to tell a false story. Your paranoia is fascinating, but a little bit sick. Why don't you go out and get some exercise. It will help clear your head.
Yaritza L typical
Malingering story teller too, it's more about narcissism and vicarious psyche . Sick. You're right
On a flight from Houston to Dallas I boarded a SW flight.
A vivid account of the incident from someone who was intimately involved in it. I was surprised and grateful to come across this . . .
Ridiculous political correctness
Chuck P [again] do you know what traumatic shock is?
You just watched a video, in fine detail of it occurring. As well as her guilt that she didn't take the window seat.
Chuck P [again] ...like anything about you, your opinion or you shrieking THE SKY IS FALLING...matters at all to me.
I agree with you, see my comment above in View all 15 replies.
What a sweet & compassionate lady.
How can someone be being sucked out a plane window and flight attendants not notice that immediately?
What a remarkable human being.
Wow. Such a wonderful lady
My condolences
@]>,-'----
She's already starting to have some symptoms survivor's guilt because originally the seat that she chose and then changed.
So ya
anyway, I bet this gal will weather the storm. I think they’re going to be ok. She really did such a great interview.
Why would anyone share this?
