Many larger Stations have or had these model railway layout (eg. Düsseldorf, Duisburg (this being a display window instead of the usual freestanding layouts), Cologne,...) . The layout itself is always the same, made by Noch, only the scenery varies depending on age and locale. The layouts all feature no longer produced TRIX track and rolling stock, and are built and serviced by a small company in Düsseldorf.

SBB after some hesitation also starts using Stadler Kiss trains on intercity routes. Wherever high capacity is most important, they certainly do a good job.

    • @quuxjn2452

No, SBB still doesn't use the Kiss on IC routes. They are now driving more and more IR routes with the Kiss trains, yes, but they do not use them on IC routes. The only exception is the IC from Zürich to Stuttgart which is driven with the DB trains reviwed in the video.
And honestly, the Kiss trains are very great trains for regional service but imo they kinda lack the matureness for IC or IR services. Though I have not yet driven with the new Kiss SBB has put in service (RABe 512) maybe these are better. But it's a similar issue like DB has with the Twindex IC2 becauxe the Kiss was also originally developped for S-Bahn service and you still feel that even in the IC versions.

Wouldn't mind if DB bought more of them instead of using the IC2.
By the way, the IC2 also tends to malfunction a lot, to which DB answered by converting a few IC2 services to ICEs.

Both, the Bombardier Twindexx and the Stadler Kiss, are being designated as IC2 by DB Fernverkehr. That confuses a lot of people. Because the Twindexx is really bad for any journey over 90 min, while the Kiss is actually a good replacement for the old loco-hault IC trains of DB.

This line is relatively new. It was introduced in 2022 due to ongoing demands of local politicians in the Chemnitz metropolitan area. Being populated by over 200,000 people the city of Chemnitz city hasn't been a long distance destination since 2006. The state of Saxony heavily subsidizes this line. Otherwise it would not have come to fruition. However, the travel time is bloated due to the detour over Dresden and the stops in the smaller cities and towns along the route. It takes less time to travel to Leipzig via a regional train and then taking an ICE to Berlin although there is a siginificant stopover in Leipzig for about 30 minutes plus.

I thought the same about the comfort thing especially because this double level thing reminded me of the RE trains operated by DB Regio (the red two level train we've seen in the video as well). But after taking a short journey with it it fells like that's it is more comfortable than the old IC1 trains. Of course, ICE is always the best in matters of comfort when we only look on German train companies. I've taken one trip in an EC from Büchen (yes it's funny that international trains depart from there but not from Lüneburg) to Bratislava operated by the Hungerian railway company. That was quite comfortable as well, maybe a bit more than the ICE (ok, I was traveling 1st class, so maybe it's not that comparable).

i took this train from Berlin Gesundbrunnen to Rostock Hbf in June last year when i was visiting a friend (he couldnt pick me up from the airport so we agreed to meet at Rostock which is closer to him instead). it was more busy than usual but it was pretty decent otherwise. the seats werent bad (although after a while they began to feel kinda hard) but the legroom was a bit disappointing, they were kinda shoved a bit too close to my knees (doesnt help that im tall and i was travelling at second class). it was nice though and got us on time. i do kinda wish Stadler and WESTbahn (the original operators of these trainsets) put a bit more effort into it (legroom is important after all imho) and i wish Bombardier actually put effort into making the IC2 sets for DB and making them work properly. but otherwise theres not much to complain, although the return journey i took was in an ex-Touristikzug InterCity carriage that was super comfy and even had reclining seats (but sadly no proper internet on board) which was part of a push-pull consist with a DB 101 at the back and a control carriage at the front. also a fun fact: for a non-railfan though, the only thing that betrays these sets' colours would be the stitching on the seats, which is in WESTbahn's colours than the DB's traditional colours.
idk if this is mentioned in the video (i havent watched it all sadly) theres a run from Warnemunde to Wien and back because they have to still be maintained by the same guys who maintain the WESTbahn trainsets. and they go thru the night... i very heavily doubt that this service brings any revenue (yes, it really is meant to be a revenue service, otherwise it'd pointlessly run empty for such a long distance), cause last i checked it showed up on vagonweb, but this was for last years' timetable, so...

I really don't understand the dislike for the IC2. It is definitely not more uncomfortable than other long distance trains in the DB rolling stock. I "had to" spend 8 hours in one last year from DD to Cologne and the seats were definitely not uncomfortable to sit on for hours on end. The speed is the only criticism that I consider valid. They should really have a max speed of 200. However, if you want to believe DB, they mostly operate on lines where they cannot drive faster than 160 kph anyway. What I also consider a really amazing feature are the single slot bike spaces. No annoying fiddling with other passengers' bikes when you have to get off ahead of other bike users.

If they had just invested into better interior there would be no real problem with the IC 2, the original IC trains had great seating after all and was accetable for overnight services, which these trains also service.
I am not a fan of their seats and the group seats with a table aren't even chairs but shitty couches.

I dont really see a point in restaurant cars... I mean, yeah, there is the convenience of being able to get food on long journeys, but then, it is usually damn overpriced (no surprise cos it is on a train), so you are really better off just bringing a bit of your own food with you... unless you are travelling for days (which isnt really the case in Europe), you should be fine with a bit of food and drink in your backpack... it is called being prepared for your journey and saving a lot of money... so, as long as the train itself is nice, I dont mind if there isnt a restaurant car - not everyone can afford eating there, y know? :)))

    1. Intersting how you say Chemnitz, no hate but its wrong. 2. The same model Railway isn in Berlin Ostbahnhof.

      1. That also stuck with me, but only because most other city names were pronounced very well. 2. Almost every main station in Germany has this (almost) exakt model railway (always the same layout, but different buildings and trains).

Not sure about German stations, though I feel I remember one or two from being a child and growing up in Germany. I can say that last time I was at Kansas City's Union Station that they had a model railroad on exhibit.

This is a really stupid train! It doesn't even offer more comfort than a regular regional train and our 1990's loco hauled Intercity is much faster and has more comfy seats.

The Kiss is way better (faster and more comfortable) than basically any regional train of DB Regio. The other version of the IC2 is stupid.

From WC USA, Great Video! I could be wrong but I believe that many presenters in Germany don’t realize that a lot of people in the world speak English and to me if you present in English or at least have English sub-titles you will get a lot more people interested in visiting Germany and at the same time riding German Trains! I know when I was stationed there in the 1960’s I enjoyed riding trains on leave or even on weekends! You could go many places and at least spend the whole day of Saturday there! You could still get back to base by Monday morning, of course you would really be tired but it was worth it!

Hey WC, I think that most content creators in Germany are aware of the fact that English has a big footprint. But the German-language railways- or transport-related channels I know are usually focused on quite specific railway news within the German-speaking countries, so I assume that there would not be that much interest abroad anyway. In addition, if you consider the viewers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland your core audience, you probably don't want to present your content in English as not everybody may be able to understand or willing to listen to it. After all, your "local market" is still some 90 million people in Europe when you use German.

Thanks - it sounds really great, that people could be interesting on things we see as boring day to day thing. Giving this advise on an english video feels a bit strangely placed though - much like on dvds telling folks piracy is bad, while the pirated copies had that cut out ;)

I know that the ICE is now 'the product' passengers should take, but this IC is a far cry from the loco-hauled trains of the past. Sure, you can get more people in it, but it's not really all that romantic, is it?! Plus it's nice to be served coffee by an actual person.
