"A Mayor Named Sue" - Marsh Family adaptation of "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash about London mayor

- This song doesn't really need an introduction because it tells its own story - the story of the failed election campaign of a candidate for London Mayor, which was held recently as part of a load of local elections in England and Wales. You can find a bit more about the news involved if you want the background here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c....
It was really just an opportunity to cut Thomas loose on his developing Johnny Cash impersonation - late night on a Tuesday of GCSE exam week, so this explains the interrogation lighting and the absence of Danielle. But since it featured on a holiday playlist we've all loved the original track with its incredible character, humour, laid-back-ness, colloquialisms, and dry delivery. One day we might return to get the instruments a bit tighter, but it's near enough for this satirical purpose!

LYRICS:
There was once an ol’ gal named Susan Hall
Who had spent some years down in City Hall
A surprising pick but selectors had to choose
Now she got the chance to try to run for mayor
Had a whiny voice and kinda stringy hair
But the main problem was the words she tried to use
Well she planned it out, and started her campaign
But we all had doubts, when she took to sayin’
That she thought that London Town’s a “hell on earth”
She was spiky as a porcupine
Spoke from the hip - really shot her mind
And she didn’t have a clue what a real-life bus fare’s worth
In November time, well her life got worse
Cos she couldn't find her loaded purse
So she blamed the crime on some dark and evil group
But it turned out Sue was just wrong again
Cos some friendly Good Samaritan
Had turned it in, when she’d dropped it on the Tube
Now, she was taking on a tired-looking man
Who could talk real quick and whose name was Khan
And he’d already been the mayor twice before
He’d got some things right and some things wrong
And he wasn’t weak but he wasn’t strong
But she chose to paint him out like Voldemort
You see: London Town’s got busy streets
There’s protests ‘bout the Middle East
Where innocents face daily blood and strife
It sure don’t help to whip things up
But Susan saw a half-empty cup
And she poured the rest like oil onto the fire
If you scroll down Susan’s Facebook feed
There’s Far Right crap that you can read
She’s anti-Green and a Truss and Trump fan too
The election came in early May
And low turnout she hoped might sway
Enough folks to vote first-past-the-post for Sue
Now some Press leaked that Sue might win
But she ended standing by the bin with
One last chance to be a diplomat
She could have been like Andy Street
But all she did was yowl and bleat
Like some rancid bitter gutter-licking cat
Now she’s disappeared to some new place
Where she can spread her fears and impart her grace
Probably shoutin’ and a’screamin’ and a’tweetin’ till she’s blue
It’s a sad outcome unless you’re Sadiq Khan
Who isn’t Batman but who’s once again returned
Cos the city wouldn’t have that mayor named Sue

For the first minute or so I actually thought I was watching Thomas lip syncing an old Johnny Cash song, that is how good he sounded. Way to go, Thomas, and also cheers to the great musicians backing him up on their instruments! Keep up the fantastic work, Marsh Family!
Oh my goodness that was brilliant , what a great use of Thomas' deep brown voice! Instrumentals so tight underneath too. Excellent chaps. 👏👏👏👏👏
I second that!!!❤😂😂😂
Oh, Thomas this is absolutely brilliant. Definitely got the ‘twang’ going on. Well done.
Thomas and the rest of the Marsh Family, you are superb. What a great tone to Thomas’ voice and boy do you guys have your fingers on the pulse in terms of current affairs. That Sue is a vile bigot and she stands for all the wrong things in life. Good riddance I say. ❤ Thanks Marsh Family. 👍🏼
Well said! I agree 100%...
As an Aussie the subject matter was completely unknown to me but I got the picture very quickly.
Poor London and Britain in general for the lack of viable choices. We have similar problems Downunder.
Absolutely loved Thomas' performance - I did a double take when I heard him because he'd got Johnny Cash's voice and intonations almost perfect. You can tell it's not Johnny but you really have to listen carefully.
Awesome Thomas - your career as a Johnny Cash impersonator is going to "walk the line" to stardom!
That was fantastic! I laughed at the analogy of Sue, 'rancid, bitter gutter licking cat'. Very talented, very clever. The accent was superb too! 👏👏👏👍
Brilliant Marsh Family. Wow Thomas that was amazing - well done you!!!! 👏💫👏💫
There's a place beyond brilliant where the Marsh Family reside. Got to be the best yet. You summed Sue up perfectly!

Outstanding Thomas! I thought for sure I was listening to Johnny Cash!
That song has haunted me all my life, as I am a Sue 😂. This was a wonderful remake and a very good Johnny Cash impersonation 🎉😊
From another Sue
That was brilliant! I got a laugh. Thomas did a very credible Johnny Cash imitation complete with the deadpan delivery. The line about Valdemort was brilliant.
Wonderful- just brilliant Thomas voice - wow !
Nicely done Thomas, superb vocals. Brilliantly deadpan despite the witty lyrics. Another excellent song, thank you Marsh family.
Your talents get better all the time. Thomas's impersonation is brilliant.

So excellent. I certainly hope Thomas is in drama class, and I think he should use that accent all day in school.
Oh.... my.... GOODNESS!! WOW! Perfect!!! I'd dying here at his voice and the American accent. Well done, y'all!
Excellent - and respect to Thomas, who really nailed it !
she was elected to the London Assembly, that was how it was going to be all along, and continues to be a councillor in Harrow.

Even more brilliant than usual - which I didn't think was possible. I live in London and you got it 100% right. Thank you so much - you're an amazing family.
Wow! Once again you’ve nailed it. SUPERB! 👍🥰

Excellent singing and impersonation.
Brilliant. And it’s been a pleasure to watch your kids grow up. That voice! Not what I expected a few years ago!
Well done Thomas, absolutely amazing! 👏👏👏
Brilliant. You did a fantastic Johnny Cash! Thank you.
Fabulous! Thomas really nailed the vocal (and only one "intrusive r"-impressive!).
More Johnny Cash songs please. That was so good.
Going straight into the top 10 classic songs.
Well done! I love how you all morph effortlessly between musical genres whilst maintaining acerbic wit & vocalising what most observant and caring folk are thinking.
Excellent lyrics. And what a good American accent 🤩
Another brilliant performance. Thomas’s voice deserved to be show-cased!
Love it. I honestly don't know how you have found the time. 🥰
Excellent work, Thomas. Johnny Cash couldn't have done it better.
Once again a brilliant view upon current affairs.
Wow that was good. Well done Thomas and your backing group.
Another great and timely song. Thomas’ voice has settled in a fantastic place, and his confidence has soared. You should attend the Tamworth Country Music Festival in NSW, Australia, held early in the year. It is a fantastic play on the style of the original song.🎉🎉🎉
Amazing. How did Thomas pull that off! Thank you.
You did Johnny Cash very well!
Simply brilliant!
Oh that was excellent 👍
That was fantastic Thomas! I remember that song from my childhood. If I didn't know any better I would swear you came directly from Texas or Arizona. Great Job dude .
Brilliant lyrics, exemplary vocals from Thomas.
Very impressive, and fun too.
That's an awesome voice.
Brilliant Guys. Fantastic Lyrics too!
Brilliant! Nuff Said!
Wow - well done Thomas. The timing and breath-control were faultless; am sure it's not as easy as you made it look. Have loved watching everybody developing their styles. Am the youngest of four siblings (way older than you lot; actually probably older than your parents) but would so love to have been able to do this as a family. I got kicked out the school nativity choir aged 6 for "growling", which seemed kind of harsh at the time!
This is remarkable! Thomas that is really amazing. Well done all!
Brilliant. And Thomas got a voice - and the looks :-)
Brilliant ❤❤❤❤❤
What a great accent by Thomas on this. Very well done.
Brill and well done, that must have taken a bit more practise. I thought a young Johnny Cash was in the house 👏👍
Absolutely brilliant. Well done Thomas.
Amazing job by Thomas who also can still hit high notes as well as his sister Ella, who has the higher voice among the kids!
great Johnny Cash impression. Love the Marsh family
I've enjoyed many of your songs, but this one is absolutely fantastic! I love the song anyway and the original arrangement with Thomas' voice is flippin' brilliant.
Your voice dropped then Thomas, brilliant performance.
That's a pretty good Johnny Cash impersonation!
Exceptional performance, fronted by Thomas but Ben, Alfie, Ella and Tess put the shine on a lovely Johnny Cash soundalike performance.
Absolutely brilliant, a really good deep voice and as always well written lyrics.
Brilliant stuff !
Absolutely love it! Thomas' channeling of Johnny Cash is fantastic! I warned you before - watch out! He is getting ready to go solo, breaking up the group. One always does!
They are a family pop group who love each other, were you thinking they were Take That?
Brilliant
❤❤❤❤❤ Beautiful Family absolutely spot on!
Fantastic singing
Fabulous, as always.
Awesome! Well done😂😂😂
