Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 vs Drop Shot - Which one will Catch HALIBUT Surf Fishing?

  • The 2 most common techniques I like to use for targeting Halibut while surf fishing is the Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 and the drop shot. In this episode, which technique will catch more fish? Both are extremely productive but the best option really depends on the conditions you are fishing that day.

    tip if you get hook stuck and pulling it out is a fail. Push it all the way through and snipe off the barb. It will then slide back out.
    YES this hurts like heck but I'm every case pulling that barb out backwards will do more damage. I think that's OK for short subsurface penetrations. But if it's deep just have to find way to bear the pain and push it through the soft tissue letting it follow it's curve. Once the barn is all the way out the other side it can be snipped off and the shank will slide back out with no pain... I know OUCH... but if out and far from medical help this can actually prevent more serious injury and actually let you keep fishing, well have a bucket of vicodin and quart of JD. hehehe... I saw this happen once as a kid. Guy had hook deep into his backside. His buddy knew the trick and it worked. Since I have carried a small med kit but added some of that liquid freeze plus a bottle of Rx strength lidocaine...and one sealed vicodin (really as a just in case thing for real emergency pain relief though it's sort of old now but should still help?). The tropicals help a lot and since it's hard to get injectable novocain they can help a lot given 10-20min to work.
    Yours wasn't that bad though but it just brought that trick to mind.

    I recomend if you are gonna nose hook a drop shot bait use something 3 inches or smaller if it's a bait that's 4 inches or bigger than a worm hook gets the job done
    Example: missing that bite you had
    But the advantage of nose hooking a bait is that it doesn't get destroyed by the shank of the hook

    Informative video; Are tide levels critical in fishing for halibut? Can you fish the Lucky Craft in surf with frequent wave periods? Are you always successful?

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  4 роки тому +1

      Tides are important but as the old timers who have taught me always say - tides dictate where I fish, not if I fish. The calmer the water, the easier it is to maximize the cast with the lc, but that’s just me. I’ll throw them anywhere and anytime but it’s better to be selective, especially with the 110.
      I wish I was always successful, but no I’m not...at least when it comes to catching. If I learn something new the day I skunk, I consider that a win.

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  3 роки тому +1

      That’s a good area and ur doing well be covering ground. If ur ever there at low tide, looks for structure - anything that is different from flat skinny sand. Even the smallest cuts and holes in the sand are places halibut can hold when the water is filled in. Structure changes sometimes in the same day so it’s good to walk and fan cast. But that area in general is good.

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  3 роки тому +1

      I go back and forth on preference, right now I'm more comfortable with my spinning setups. Spinning is probably the way to go for most folks but for me personally, I find it more fun to fight the fish on a bait caster. But really its dealers choice.

    • @itzyabui

      @@BenjieKimFishing which do you think can cast further? Thanks for replying.

    • @BenjieKimFishing
      @BenjieKimFishing  3 роки тому +1

      In theory, a baitcaster should cast farther due to less resistance from spool thru guides. But in real life, I think it just depends on the person. For me, the difference is negligible.

      It’s pretty subjective depending on the day. Even a slight breeze towards you will knock down the lc. But just a general average, probably about 40 yards or so. Not trying to make it past the breakers. Most bites will be within 20 yards of shore.

      I’ve only fished up there once but was targeting corbina. However, there are halibut up there for SURE. They are very location specific so you’ll need to target them in the right areas. I would start from any river mouths or bay entrances. Idk the area so I can’t be much help for up there but pretty sure that would be a good start.
