Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 vs Drop Shot - Which one will Catch HALIBUT Surf Fishing?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- The 2 most common techniques I like to use for targeting Halibut while surf fishing is the Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 and the drop shot. In this episode, which technique will catch more fish? Both are extremely productive but the best option really depends on the conditions you are fishing that day.

OM... You got a bite on your thumb ~ :(. Hope the hali brushed the teeth lol
Nice job again ~:)
Thanks for sharing
Have a blessed day ~!!!
This made me lol! Thank you always for your encouragement, one of these days would love to share the sand! 🙏
Wow, Nice~ Always fun to watching surf fishing~ Great video~
Thank you! Great legal in your last video, I hope u get another this weekend!
great video brotha! you should make a tutorial video that explains how to tie a lucky craft and how to tie a drop shot ?
Hey thanks for the encouragement bro! Definitely, I can do a video like that. Great idea!
tip if you get hook stuck and pulling it out is a fail. Push it all the way through and snipe off the barb. It will then slide back out.
YES this hurts like heck but I'm every case pulling that barb out backwards will do more damage. I think that's OK for short subsurface penetrations. But if it's deep just have to find way to bear the pain and push it through the soft tissue letting it follow it's curve. Once the barn is all the way out the other side it can be snipped off and the shank will slide back out with no pain... I know OUCH... but if out and far from medical help this can actually prevent more serious injury and actually let you keep fishing, well have a bucket of vicodin and quart of JD. hehehe... I saw this happen once as a kid. Guy had hook deep into his backside. His buddy knew the trick and it worked. Since I have carried a small med kit but added some of that liquid freeze plus a bottle of Rx strength lidocaine...and one sealed vicodin (really as a just in case thing for real emergency pain relief though it's sort of old now but should still help?). The tropicals help a lot and since it's hard to get injectable novocain they can help a lot given 10-20min to work.
Yours wasn't that bad though but it just brought that trick to mind.
Robert, I cringed reading this entire comment hahahaha! I've read that this is a valid option and I HOPE I will never be faced with that decision!
I always bring a small altoids box with first aid stuff because halibut teeth are so unforgiving. Yikes.
That’s not a bad idea, you never know what might happen out on the water!
Hey Benjie! Your newest subscriber is the guy you met last week at Trail 1. Tight lines!
It was so great to meet you Michael and thank you for the sub! Hope to see you around again!
For a second, I thought you were hooked on one of the trebles. Great video as always my dude. #CantStopWontStop
Yes sir, gotta keep movin! Thanks Dino, can’t wait for this year to be over...already so excited for the fishing in store for 2021. Even tho there is much fishing left this year!
Hehehe thumb up
I recomend if you are gonna nose hook a drop shot bait use something 3 inches or smaller if it's a bait that's 4 inches or bigger than a worm hook gets the job done
Example: missing that bite you had
But the advantage of nose hooking a bait is that it doesn't get destroyed by the shank of the hook
Good insights!
What size tac you were using.. pound test..?
50 pound tac. 30 lb straight braid (I think..)
Looks like you need to invest in some fish grippers. Makes it easier to unhook them to.
Can’t disagree with you there! Thanks for the tip 🤙
Awesome! Loved watching the video. Which beach was that?
Hey Matthew!! What’s up brotha?!
Not a super secret beach or anything but I’ll email ya 😉
WOW i thought you got hooked, nope! Gnarly little guy
Gnarly is a good word for it 🤣🤣
Informative video; Are tide levels critical in fishing for halibut? Can you fish the Lucky Craft in surf with frequent wave periods? Are you always successful?
Tides are important but as the old timers who have taught me always say - tides dictate where I fish, not if I fish. The calmer the water, the easier it is to maximize the cast with the lc, but that’s just me. I’ll throw them anywhere and anytime but it’s better to be selective, especially with the 110.
I wish I was always successful, but no I’m not...at least when it comes to catching. If I learn something new the day I skunk, I consider that a win.
Another fun Vid, keep it up Benjie, Now you know what a sardine feels like LOL
I'm out on the Yak tomorrow to target spotties.
shoot you a report later.
Thanks Rudy!! How’d u do on those spotties?! I had a fun time a week ago in the sd bay, got about 20 to play, mostly dinks with a couple legals. They are so fun!
@@BenjieKimFishing It was a super slow day. 8 fish total.
1 cuda
1 croaker
1 mac
1 sandbass (dink)
4 spotties. (2 legals)
I was getting spoiled with 25 fish days.. LOL. the bite was off, may have been the storm front coming in.
my guy i was just here the other day and couldnt get a bite! which section of carlsbad if you dont mind me asking? i was on the south side by north ponto i believe... but i don't ever know if where i'm fishing is a good spot! i get insecure and move every few casts
also WTF i had no idea halibut have teeth LOL good to know for when i catch my first one
That’s a good area and ur doing well be covering ground. If ur ever there at low tide, looks for structure - anything that is different from flat skinny sand. Even the smallest cuts and holes in the sand are places halibut can hold when the water is filled in. Structure changes sometimes in the same day so it’s good to walk and fan cast. But that area in general is good.
awesome video as always
brotha.... hope your thumb heals...
Thanks Eli! Bro, u got on some nice Opaleye the other day!
@@BenjieKimFishing oh yeah....thanks to John Carpenter and sam Carpenter I got 5he skunk of my back and my first opal eye
Dude, your dropshot technique is so...different. I dont mean that in a negative way...
Awesome vid. For the surf, do you prefer the spinning rod/reel or the baitcasting rod/reel set up?
I go back and forth on preference, right now I'm more comfortable with my spinning setups. Spinning is probably the way to go for most folks but for me personally, I find it more fun to fight the fish on a bait caster. But really its dealers choice.
@@BenjieKimFishing which do you think can cast further? Thanks for replying.
In theory, a baitcaster should cast farther due to less resistance from spool thru guides. But in real life, I think it just depends on the person. For me, the difference is negligible.
I’m always worried they will snap and bite me like that! I’m sure one will get me someday! Great video brotha!
Haha thanks josh! This was a first time for me and man, those teeth are sharp and he wouldn’t let go 🤣🤣!
You're in my hood! Gonna try some surf fishing tomorrow for some Hali. I'm guessing the beans are gone by now? Nice video!
What’s up bro? Hope u got em! Beans are kind of still around but it’s way past peak season. I actually saw em today and was pretty surprised.
@@BenjieKimFishing Ok, finally got one of the Lucky Craft lures to see what all the hype is about. Went fishing at Ponto today and caught a 35" hali. The biggest Halibut of my life! Didnt get a video of it, but the people who gathered around were nice enough to get a pic of me with it. Wish I could post of pic on UA-cam. I released it unharmed to the dismay of the lookieloos. One guys said he would have bought it off me, but I'm catch and release only :)
What the?! For real??? Dang man, you the real mvp bro!!! Holy crap!!! U can email it to me at benjiekimfishing@gmail.com, would love to see that beast!
Congrats man!!! 🔥🔥🔥💪🏼
@@BenjieKimFishing Sent!
Can you please share your gear and set up. Thank you.
Another dope video. Sucks you got bit, but I couldn’t help but laugh! You called him a “freak”! 😂🤙🏽
Haha, I’m a big baby, hopefully my booboo can provide a tiny bit of entertainment for folks 🤣!
What do you think about removing the middle hook in the 110s
Dealers choice. I don’t have a problem with it. One benefit would be less damage to fish.
Thanks I like not hurting fish fish are friends and sometimes food
Both work
Absolutely. I love getting the bite on the hard bait but both are definitely productive. 🤙
I was probably in the same area at that time (10/3).. but I was trying to kayak launch out of there and flipped :( lost my pedal drive and a bunch of gear so I'm back to surf fishing for now. bought a bunch of lucky crafts after watching your vids. keep slaying :D
Awww man what a debacle, so sorry brotha. I’m hoping to pick up a scout inflatable and launch from the surf some time but stuff like your experience has got me nervous
Wow! Halibut booboo Again super informative!! Good to know about your experiences snagging with the DS and the LC was killing Thanks for posting BK
Always a deep appreciation for you Kate! You’ve made a difference in my life so thank you!
You knew it was short!
Great video as always brother, always super fun to watch haha. Nice bites you got, except the one on your thumb, looked painful sorry man. Can't wait for part 2 :D keep it up!
Appreciate your support brotha, thank you man. It’s been cool interacting with ya the past month, one of these days we’ll link!
@@BenjieKimFishing Anytime man, just let me know when your schedule is free c:
On average how many yards are you casting out into the surf? Also are you trying to make it past the breakers or before? Thank you so much man
It’s pretty subjective depending on the day. Even a slight breeze towards you will knock down the lc. But just a general average, probably about 40 yards or so. Not trying to make it past the breakers. Most bites will be within 20 yards of shore.
I have yet to catch a hali 😫. I’m going out to the lagoon tomorrow so hopefully I get one 🤞
Stick with it and you’ll get em brotha! Hali fishing can be a grind but so rewarding when you get em 🤙
😂 nice bite, huh?
Great video. Would you consider that a fast or slow retrieve for the lucky craft?
I suppose it’s relative. I was retrieving as slow as I possibly could while staying in contact with my lc. But the water was moving pretty fast so the retrieve doesn’t necessarily look “slow”. Hope that makes sense 🤙
That was so good man!! Do you use a weight for the minnow so you can cast further?
Thanks for watching! In this case no, but I do throw a modified lc that I weight with storm suspenstrips when I want to hit deeper water columns.
ua-cam.com/video/LAAI3nh71s4/v-deo.html
You got some sweet setups bro!!! Great content, thank you.
Appreciate the positive vibes man, thank you!
Now you know how the fish feels when you hooked them with those treble hooks😀
He was mad at me for sure! 🤙
benjie bro i’ve been on the quest for halibut for a whole year now i can’t find them 😭 then again i’m in ventura, u ever caught any up north?
I’ve only fished up there once but was targeting corbina. However, there are halibut up there for SURE. They are very location specific so you’ll need to target them in the right areas. I would start from any river mouths or bay entrances. Idk the area so I can’t be much help for up there but pretty sure that would be a good start.
Stick with it brotha, nothing more rewarding than putting the time in and figuring it out!
Try Kiddie Beach Park, toward the ocean on the rocky area. I recommend dropshot. Good luck.
Damn he got you! Fiesty little guy!
He sure did. He was angry! 😜
Another great video buddy!!
Thanks neighbor, you’re the best man!!
Watching this on my way to work
Don’t crash!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Much love Mo, let’s get out there again before the year ends!
