    Around 4 months before i saw this review i bought the last clearview pioneer my local showroom had in stock and was lucky to get it ..then i see this and i must have watched this review maybe 10 times over the last few months, i even made my wife watch it ..and so far this is the only stove i would consider changing my clearview for . But i won't, can't, as i love the thing. Just wish i had known about this stove before i bought my clearview

    Thank you for this helpful review! Looking at the compact version as will probably suit our lounge more as it’s small/medium in size and means carving less of a hole in our fireplace. Previous occupier had a gas fire before so only a small hole left behind. Thank you so much for this review. Would be interested to know how other compact users have faired. The comments I’ve seen are positive so far!

      I should have said that I often have a good bed of embers still going the next morning that’s the beauty of multi fuel. So I open the vents back up add a few bits of kindling and a little log and away it goes. Thinking about it it’s probably used for 7 months over the end of autumn winter.

    Great review. We’ve had a Sudbury since last year, only complaint would be smoking when refuelling, but you do get used to it and sometimes it’s not an issue. No complaints about the magnetic handle, it works perfectly. Look forward to you reviewing one.

      Just a question, when testing a pure woodburner, as there is often no primary air control for air coming up from below, the handle/door is left slightly ajar to feed air to the fire until up to operating temperature. So how do you achieve that with a magnetic door latch?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  10 місяців тому

      😆 that’s a good point, I haven’t tried their Sudbury yet!
      I’d have to give it a go, as I imagine they will have thought of something (the air system may allow for it in some clever way).

      @@TheTortoise Popped into a local stove shop yesterday to look at a Sudbury. Nice stove but when I asked the retailer how she manages to light the fire without being able to leave the door ajar (because of the magnetic door latch) her answer was that she wedges it open for a period of time with a piece of kindling! The clock user instructions say the lighting procedure for the Sudbury is to open the vent fully and after 20 - 25 minutes! it should be up to operating temperature, then close down the vent and use in the normal way to control the burn etc. I am sure Clock know what they are doing, and this may well be a non-issue in reality, but having designed such an elegant handle for the Blithfield, I wonder why they decided to change it on the Sudbury?

      I’m going to ask to test one. I’ve gotta know now. I expect the person on the shop is just wanting it to light really quickly, but this has my intrigue now.

    Hi pal, love the videos in fact I'm a bit addicted. Does this stove have a DEFRA device and is it removable. I had to take my clarke barrel stove apart to grind a nub that had been cast into the cast iron body. I am fancying a Blithfield as the build quality seems amazing. Just renovated my clearview vision 500 and its gone in the large workshop like a new stove. In the living room where the clearview used to be I put a Hetas 5kw. The living room is big with really high ceiling but honestly the 5kw is enough and the clearview will heat the garage well. Keep making the videos.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I was interested to see how it stacked up against some of the competition I’ve seen on the channel, and it would seem to be one of the best. Great video. Would really appreciate some advice on choosing a stove. Picking between a Clock (this one or the Sudbury) and a Clearview (Pioneer 400 / Vision 500)
    - We burn wood 95% of the time
    - Would ideally like to be able to heat two 5m x5m connected rooms in a drafty house
    - like the Clearview brand
    - like the larger window on the clock
    - prefer not to add a vent but can do if absolutely required
    - price difference seems to be a few hundred pounds so not likely to be a deciding factor.
    - will be used a fair bit so ongoing, real world economy is important..
    Thanks in advance !

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for the message. The Sudbury or Blithfield 5 would definitely have the real world performance advantage over the Clearview. Given the space and draughty nature of the house, you could consider the Blithfield 8, but as you say it includes the requirement for an air vent.

    I got my Clock Blithfield 5 Standard a year ago, my first stove, and I can endorse everything you say. I found last winter that I didn't need the primary feed at all to light the stove, and had it closed the whole time (burning wood). So far this year the stove seems to need more air, although that may be that I'm using my own seasoned wood this year. Last year I had to buy in kiln dried, but my moisture meter tells me the logs this year are just as dry. Any thoughts on that?
    I've also found that burning anthracite briquettes needs an AGE to get up to temperature, and then only if I load up lots of fuel from the outset. Overall, I'm very happy with my choice - I'd buy it again.

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  8 місяців тому

      Kiln dried will dry throughout the log. It’s probable that the centre of your logs is still a bit damp and that is slowing the burn. You could split them again to find out.
      With regard to smokeless fuel, to be fair this generally doesn’t reach the same temperatures as wood, so the whole process is a bit more gradual.

      @TheTortoise  11 місяців тому +1

      There are a couple of things:
      Check the room size because despite the 5kw output the Heta is more like 4-7 and the clock is 5-9.
      They are both wonderfully controlled and clean, but the Heta does have the practicality edge with its single air control and stay cool handle. The clock on the other hand thanks to its size has the running overnight edge.

      @@calumcrotch1906 both are multi-fuel so have a little compromise to serious overnight use with wood. They both can run overnight, but given the Clocks size it is a little easier. On the flip side the Heta Ambition is even easier again to run overnight.

Very responsive if your budget is not great. I wouldnt pick any of the others in the go eco range cheap handles and less control . The clock is simply peerless . The build quality is like a tank. If you were to burn wood in it , and treated it well by not overfiring it . I think it could last a lifetime. A clock is an investment. You will thank yourself for years down the line if you buy one. Hi there, I have the Clock Blithfield compact as it fits the room better and I like to have more room each side of the stove (not keen on seeing them squeezed into the fireplace). Anyway I would be interested in knowing whether everyone leaves a layer of ash in the base of the stove after it goes out and relays the new wood for relighting on top or cleans the stove out. I've always tended to clean out all the ash when cold and relaying for a new burn each day as it's easier when the ash is cold but that means I don't have the ash bed from the start. Which is best anyone?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  8 місяців тому +1

      When burning wood a clean stove is a greedy stove. Leave the ash in and everything will work better, more economically and efficiently.

    I’m looking at this or the DG Ivar 5. I’ve had a multifuel previously and like the idea of pan for cleaning it out and the ‘option’ to burn other fuels. However, it will mainly be wood with maybe some briquettes every now and then. In terms of efficiency I was going to go for the wood burner this seems to super easy to light and is also very efficient. I’ve also seen seen your Heta Inspire review and that looks great but seems a bit fussy in terms of fuel and set up. What would you go for between the clock, Ivar and Heta? Thanks 😊

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  9 місяців тому +4

      That’s a tricky one, they’re all awesome!
      The Clock is the heaviest beast of a work horse, so that I would consider based on my intended use.
      The Ivar is the most focused wood burner, which although flexibility maybe useful, will prove to be the most economical choice. Burning overnight with wood is superb and it will naturally produce less ash too as it is constantly re-burned.
      The Heta is the most refined. Everything is butter smooth, the handle fees like a Mercedes and doesn’t get hot. Every bit of it feels too if it’s game. But to be fair in this company it is the least focused on constant or serious use. That said we’re sort of splitting hairs because these are all as I’ve said “top of range”.
      I would genuinely have any of them and think, this thing is superb every time I used it!

      I think it’s between the Ivar (or Anste) and the clock (the hetas needing things a bit too perfect is off putting)I know you should always burn really good quality wood. Im guessing the clock being more versatile would cope would less than perfect (moisture wise) timber?
      They are both the same price range. I think I’m leaning towards the clock due to versatility and not being that much less economical than the Ivar (based on your testing 12 vs 14 hours).
      Decisions, decisions, thanks again 😊

Because I live in a smoke control area, my stove choice always comes down to a stove that's still controllable with the DEFRA kit on, or one where it's easily removable if needs be... A stove thermometer is probably a helpful idea as it will guide you on when to close things down and open up etc. we sell them on our website, if you decide to get one.
      Generally you will close the Primary air (air from under the grate) once the stove is up to temperature, and you can then control the stove with the secondary air. If you burn coal then you will tend to control the stove equally with both controls. Once you’ve got used to keeping it at the right temperature, you can then look at more advanced control, but let me know when you’re at that point.

      I called the manufacturer and was told the defra kit is in operation if the rectangular tab is not covering the hole. The circular cover is for the air system that comes through the holes in the back of the fire bricks and to leave that one alone as there is a small measured gap in there that regulates how much air comes in through those holes.

      They’re not really direct competitors because one is multi-fuel and the other is wood only (bit like comparing a sports car with an SUV).
      If I was burning wood and wanted the best performance there is no comparison, the Heta will win every time. But the Clock does have some aces up it’s sleeve too, so it’s more a question of who the buyer is and what they want from the stove.

      Yes, there’s no issue at all with connecting a 5-6” increaser to these stoves and then running on a 6” flue. In fact I would recommend it (generally) as it means you can run the stove without the DEFRA stop, maximising control.

      James Archer is the original creator and owner of Clock. He is a really lovely chap and he seems to have set his sights on achieving zero warranty claims (something I believe he might achieve). With regard to cracking he has alluded to me that the mk1 stoves did have some issues and he has assured both me and another commenter on this video that anyone who suffered this has been properly cared for (a replacement stove seemed to be the solution he mentioned where a manufacturer fault was found).
      Having poured over this stove I cannot imagine this issue being continued, but leaving aside somebody being abusive or foolish with a stove I do not foresee any cause for concern. I rated the stove very highly and based on my conversations with both James Archer and TEP who manufacture and distribute Clock stoves, I don’t know of anything that concerns me. Almost everything I’ve heard is very positive in regard to their handling of the issues with the mk1 stoves.

    A problem I can see with the rotary knobs is that there is no visual indication as to where they have been set. A simple lever lets its position be known so a quick glance tells where the air controls are. I can see it wasn't designed by a Nuclear Operator (retired in my case) :)

      The DEFRA kit prevents the stove from fully shutting down. If your stove can extinguish its flames, then it’s not fitted or doesn’t need removing. If when your stove is fully closed it still burns with a busy flame then you possibly could remove the block in the vent at the back. You need to have a 6” flue and not be in a smokeless zone, but if that’s the case you could have a chat with your fitter about pulling it out and making the change.

      This was my stove of the year, so it is certainly highly rated. If you’re burning wood then the DG is perhaps the best option. I’m using a Fireview at the moment and this along with the Clock is exceptional. The Clearview is obviously an old school beast, it has its charms, but will certainly be beaten by the others in terms of efficiency. I think if I wanted a multi-fuel then primarily look, which I preferred using (handles and control etc) and price would drive me between the Clock and Woodwarm. The Clearview could pick me up if I was feeling a bit of a nonconformist 😆.
