Fixing a Toyota Mr2 That fills with water

  • So the car had sat covered for a few years when the old top was on it. But after replacing the top I assumed it could sit out in the rain without issue. .. I was wrong. While the new top fit well, it was actually the drain ports that had clogged at the bottom where they exit. So.. lets fix it and test it out

You gotta love your Toyota! My sister‘s Camry has been passed around my family for 15 years! It went from my mom, to my aunt, then to finally my sister, we named it Bonnie!

I had a 2001 in that exact color scheme with the top you described. I liked driving it more than Miatas. Only complaint was it had a typical Toyota 4 banger and since it was right in your ears you could hear every clack and click. Sounded like a tractor at times. I do NOT envy you having to replace the top. The way they tensioned it to keep it sealed with strings crisscrossing everywhere required a PhD to figure out.

It really isn't the prettiest sounding engine. When I come to a stop and go out of gear, I hear what I think to be clutch chatter from the aftermarket clutch and it drives me mad.

@@MatthewVanceMusic I changed to the available highest perf Toyo tires in 2003 and the road noise was intense. Still, hearing every pebble and every valve open/close I still enjoyed the hell out of driving it. It's like driving a grown man's go-kart. If you don't have legs too long.

Sharp car Jay. Headlights need attention though.
I guess the spider's demise was Toyota getting out of the spots car market. The Supra lid a rebadged BMW roadster.

Here in the UK I bought two new old stock headlight units from the local Toyota dealership 6 years ago, £200 each. Ditto rear light units.

Mr smart geart video great car I had same problem when if first got mine but all the carpet was wet quick way to clean dry out in the UK was to remove centre console 4 screws a few clips and both seats takes 20 min then once clean ADULTS ONLY light your bbq and quickly place lid on bbq before it gets too hot and carpet on lid and keep the carpet moving so not to burn lots of steam lots of fun and dry clean carpet 😀

If that hadn't worked, I was gonna recommend some Liquid Plumr. 😄 That will definitely cause some rust for sure over time. Not to mention mold. Thanks for the tip, Jay! 👍

The part where you was sticking the screwdriver in… just to let you know, that also pops off if you need to run it under some hot water. You can then click it back on.

This reminds me of my 1969 Mustang convertible that retained so much water that my friends suggested I get a couple gold fish to put in the back

Also regularly check the hole under the sill where the water drains out to the ground.

I heard that the carpet has a rubber liner inside it, so you may dry the "top" carpet but below, it may still be wet on the floorboard/metal .... not sure how true this is, but worth checking you would hate for that to happen

You can also pour or spray rubbing alcohol on your carpet it will help clean out the water cause it'll evaporate quicker and I won't hurt your postery

Go for top money in Ireland, but the Japanese Imports command stupid money
There was a black Japanese Spec MR-S Spyder with 92 thousand miles on it and it was like 22 thousand Euro

Toyota-branded, probably yes. Technically the second generation Lexus IS also had a convertible version, and of course the SC 430 but we all know how much of a disaster that car was.
There's also the new LC, but those are quite a bit more expensive and limited production.
