    What I had to use was a speaker wire through the firewall I was loaded with four elk and the weather was warming up quick. Made it home, saved all my meat made elk jerky.

      If the weather was warming up you could have had jerky sooner

    Geez people lighten up. Everyone's got their own way of fixing shit. If the end result is a problem solved why argue about it. Personally dude, I think ur videos are great and ur very good at explaining what ur doing. Obviously, you know the correct way to fix this is to replace the cable, I found it to be informative though and it can relate to all vehicles. I've never even thought to check that the butterfly opens all the way up when the pedal is depressed. I guess I've never had an issue yet over the years that prompted me to even consider it. Now that I know, I'll be checkin my vehicle out tomo. And if it isn't opening all the way, and the cable can't be adjusted, you can bet I'll be rigging something similar as a temp fix till I feel like buying a new one. Good video bro.

      +SparkysGarage its the same people that would bitch n whine if you told them they needed a $100 throttle cable, its not an honest fix but if you do it for yourself or give a customer the choice there's nothing wrong with it at all, there's no danger if the zip ties fail either

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare 9 років тому +3

      +Scott Stalmack Yeah it's not rocket science. He's taking up the slack in the cable with some ingenuity. Ford made most their vehicles this way. Who knows why. Maybe to get better MPG averages. Of course newer vehicles started going with non cable electronic accelerator pedals. So no worries of adjustments, slack, or frayed cables.

    I did this and it is amazing the amount of response from pressing the gas pedal now. First time I drove it, I barely pressed the gas and the truck surged forward. It's a pretty amazing and cheap fix. Thanks for this.

    I wouldn't say "gain" 50hp. It's more like "reclaim" lost 50hp.
    Or since it will probably stretch again, just replace the cable.
    Depending on how well you kept up the rest of the truck, would be the method you use.

    • @acephantom903
      @acephantom903 7 років тому +5

      Yup. My 1995 explorer had pretty much the same issue but I didn't trust the cable since it needed 4 big zip ties and 1 small one just to be in a drivable state. After a few hours of looking online I found the correct cable for me (1994 Ford ranger cable as 1995 explorer cable is nowhere to be found) for $50 and 15 minutes to replace the cable and I now have a working throttle pedal again and I can rely that it will last me another 22 years. I imagine the suv will die before that cable goes bad again.

    I saw something similar but the fix was to fabricate a small brass bushing with a groove in to fit over the cable. Also saw a fix on a transmission valve cable. The fix was to use a fishing weight placed on the cable to remove the slack and worked very well. I have used the zip-tie on the transmission valve cable to take up the slack and that worked well also. Thanks for the video. Don't worry about the naysayers, been around for ever.

      You can't do that in a brand new electronic throttle. It will fuck up your car and your budget. This trick is only possible on old cable\spring actioned throttle bodies

    • @potatojz38
      @potatojz38 9 років тому +1

      Mario Millan how/where would you even put a zip tie on an electronic throttle body unit? This FIX is just to gain back the throttle sweep you had at factory and with age the cable gets slack and a zip tie is a quick and easy repair to get your full wide open throttle back

    Both. There is a TPS (throttle position sensor) attached to the side of the throttle body. So when that butterfly valve opens to allow more air flow it also trips the sensor to dump more fuel.

      SparkysGarage First of all, I did not insult your video, but made a joke, so take a syringe of chill. Second, you did not gain 50 hp, 5 hp, or any for that matter, you just did a temporary repair that makes your vehicle work as it should from stock, and third, to gain hp you must make proper upgrades such as cat back system, programmer, headers, cold air intake, etc. such as I have done to my truck, not just zip tie a defective part. Good luck with all your new found hp buddy!

    I just did this on my 92 Mustang! I floored it, indexed the throttle plate, threw a zip tie on and mashed it again, almost 3/4 of an inch more from the old index mark and growls a lot more too when mashed!

  • @beatsbytheory
    @beatsbytheory 9 років тому +7

    Did this to my 98 XLT..works a lot better. My issue was the leverage bracket behind the pedal, I guess it broke from wear and tear. I would HIGHLY recommend starting with only 2 ties to avoid breaking the cable's tip off.. Lol, I think I may "graduate" into adding another tie though.

    Thank you so much. I always thought my vehicle had pathetic throttle response and acceleration but I was wrong it was my throttle body only allowing 30% air flow. • @DaytonCarCare

    Same thing on my 94 Mustang. I took a small piece of sheet metal. Cut a piece and bent it over the cable slack. Works well. Doubtful doing this will give any car a 50 HP gain. But will definitely improve your WOT response and maybe few extra ponies.

    • @SparkysGarage
      @SparkysGarage  9 років тому

      +DaytonCarCare Well... Dyno your vehicle and half throttle, then full throttle. Bet the difference is more than 50hp :)

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare 9 років тому +2

      +SparkysGarage LoL Of course there's going to be a HP output difference between half throttle and WOT. But this mod won't ADD 50 hp to your car. I don't need a dyno to tell me that.

    • @jeremiahgoodwin3408
      @jeremiahgoodwin3408 9 років тому

      +DaytonCarCare if you actually think about it... to make things simple, say a car has 100 hp. now say it can only use 25-50%. car only has 25-50hp then... once you can open up 100% you get 100hp. resulting in 25-50 hp. now aplythat to a v8 with 235 hp and the gains start to to get real big

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare 9 років тому

      +Jeremiah Goodwin Don't need to think about it. Have a 01 Audi TT Quattro now. Only 1.8T and gets 225 HP all day long. If I get a APR stage 1 tune it will give it 260 HP. Enough said. LOL

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare 9 років тому

      +Jeremiah Goodwin Calling people names you don't know and on the internet really shows your true intelligence. But if you really think you're getting 50 HP from this. Well... let's not start with name calling. LMAO Besides max hp/trq output is measured by it's RPM range not necessarily where the throttle position is. I also run across this mentality with people not knowledgeable with stereo systems. They don't tune their stereo head unit with the gain level of the amp. They think maxing out the gain is best for the sub woofer. Whereas it's not that simple. All you'll hear is bass and nothing else.

  • @klmartin1962
    @klmartin1962 10 років тому +5

    This works for a time, but the reason the cable stretches is because there are broken strands inside the cable housing. It will eventually break and leave you sitting with a vehicle that will only idle. It is better to go ahaead and replace the cable when this happens. I think I paid $18 for the last one, and that was from the dealer.

    • @SparkysGarage
      @SparkysGarage  10 років тому +1

      Just because the cable is stretched does not mean there are broken strands. To each his own.

    there should be an adjustment nut at the throttle valve lever to take out the slack from the cable, usually its a nut you back off one turn, pull on the cable till its tight, but doesn't prevent the valve from closing when the gas pedal is released. re tighten, and that's it, there's a similar adjustment for e-brake cable

    uuum...not to be rude but there was a recall on ford explorer/rangers on accelerator cables and cruise control cables for this exact reason and would not cost you a dime. (I'm sure by now the recall is expired) I was a ford mechanic for 10 years and have dealt with many of this problem it worked both ways the throttle/cruise would activate and stick wide open or not activate and barely move off idle. the safest thing to do is replace the cables

    I knew a guy that broke a throttle cable and just tied two long shoestrings together, tied one end to the carb linkage and ran it through the hole in the bulkhead. I thought he should have used a lawnmower throttle cable with the lever that has the turtle on one end and the rabbit on the other

    i did this mod and i dont understand why my fuel consumption became worse even though the car feels more responsive and more driveable but why am i spending more on fuel??? :O just kidding aha :D i had the same thing on a wreck 99 jaguar xj8 sport i bought off a workmate it was only getting about 80% throttle (OBD readout) so i tensioned the throttle cable and it was an unreal difference it actually solved the clunky automatic gear changes at the same time

      What's the difference between cable and wire?

    • @armymatt83
      @armymatt83 7 років тому

      zeke112964 the cable is a mechanical connection between the pedal and the throttle body were you have a cable connecting the the two. throttle by wire is a sensor at the pedal feeding position data to a servo that operates the throttle body and it works fine most of the time especially if you get a custom tune done.

    While test driving,I thought I'll hafta fix the slop in the gas pedal. Saw it had this prob. I hadn't read this thread yet. I made an adjustable tightener out of one of those butterfly wall anchor thingys. I filed slots in the ends of each 'wing'on the anchor. Put a big head screw in. Put the end of the cable in my slots. As ya tighten down the screw between the wings,it pushes them apart making it a longer spacer. Makes a big improvment in the feel when driving and shifting.

    I just tried this mod on my 2001 nissan frontier supercharged. I was having issues with stalling and low RPM at a stop and sometimes it would even die on me. I would be at 900+rpm on a cold start but when I came to stop it would drop to 350-450rpm.Tried cleaning throttle body, idle air control valve, ungunked all the intake lines the problem would just come back. I tried this (started with 2 ties) and instantly went to 700rpm at stopping idle. with 3 ties I was at 800rpm and now happy with it :)

  • @DudeWithaPage

    Ive done this on all of my past vehicles, it works great, you can notice the difference and the throttle does close when you let off the gas, just like in your moms new car that she lets you borrow for first dates. If you didnt understant the concept that spacing out an old cable is like putting on a new cable.

    I had a 96 Jetta that not only had a ton of slack in the throttle cable but also had a plastic nub under the gas peddle that prevented WOT, it was like that from factory. So after removing that and taking up the slack in the throttle cable there was a HUGE diff like going from 20% throttle to 100% I would deff say there was a major change.

    He basically just restored the power that was suppose to be there... Throughout time the the throttle cable stretched causing the throttle body not to be able to be opened like it use to be. So by putting the zip ties on the throttle cable it theoretically shortened the cable so that when he floors it he can go past 2000 rpm and by doing that you take in more air and gas and are able to raise the rpm level that the car is suppose to have and now he can go faster!

    I had the same problem in an old international scout. the metal arm that has the gas pedal mounted to it was bent from years of use. when it broke I hooked a shoelace to the cable so I could pull it until I got home. the first time I pulled it the truck took off like never before. I found out when I was making the repair that the throttle arm on the pedal was bent and only opening the throttle part way.

  • @EpochMod
    @EpochMod 12 років тому

    To check the slack, pull the pedal towards you, as in the reverse of pushing on it. You will probably see about an inch of slack. Make sure you don't add to many cables or you will fuck with the idle of the vehicle.

    I had this problem on my 96 F150 5 L as well I found there is excessive play in the cable at the gas pedal and like you said only opening a throttle body about 25 barely 50% I just thought the old truck I bought was sluggish and slow I was able to wedge in a couple Clips in a plastic wedge of sorts that took up the tension in the pedal there should be a barrel adjuster of sorts like on a bicycle brake lever to take up slack in the cable tension I've often thought it meant to do this on my own but my wedges and spacers have done the trick so far
