    Many of you asked for a low-budget aquarium video. I’ve been waiting for a betta tank long time ago so I it was a great opportunity to combine the two. I was trying to use the most budget friendly things available but there are some parts where you should not go for the cheap. It’s kinda hard to make it cheaper really. Maybe you can collect the wood and the stones from outdoors but I trust more in the ones you can buy in aquarium specific stores.
    This tank is optimal to keep a betta in it. It doesn’t like too much light and too strong flow. Since the light isn’t that strong, you should choose low-demand plants, (maybe you can ask your friends for some) Also don’t forget about the water heater, water temperature needs to be 26 degrees (C) at least.
    I suggest 30% water changing in every week. The plants will need a bit of fertilizer. Also you can put snails in it, but I don’t suggest shrimps since betta eats them.
    The darker soil would be better for the betta, but I could have bought only active soil that time and I didn't want it, so I chose this one. Since the light isn't strong and there are plenty shady areas in there, I hope it won't be a problem.
    This is really a budget-friendly and easy aquarium, ideal for beginners and such a comfy place for the betta.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! It's sad how betta is the most mistreated fish in the entire aquarium hobby, people just dump them in bowls, jars and vases and be done with it. Bettas are a very active swimming fish , instead of a stationery floating fish which is one of the excuse why people keep them in small spaces.. Because they don't think bettas are active swimmer. They might not be as fast as neon tetras, but healthy bettas ARE , indeed, very active when kept in larger spaces instead of jars. Bettas are absolutely my favourite fish, and I REALLY appreciate that you shattered the dreaded, cursed Marina betta cube at the end , LOL!
    BTW can't wait to see what kind of super lucky betta ends up in that gorgeous tank :D

Im going to try to get more variety since i just have Hornwort, and i'm going to make the 20 gallon a blackwater aquarium since i've heard the tannins can strengthen a betta's scales, Crusoe keeps rubbing his off on everything.
    My fish are basically my babies and i will do anything to keep them happy because they're so stinkin adorable and spastic.

Really good job, it looks amazing!!! I dropped the idea of buying a tank kit bcuz I think its best to build it together yourself so u can make sure everything is the right setup for the betta fish. Guess its time to save up some coin and soon I will be able to give a betta (I had to) life to one of these poor souls in the pet store. #nocupsforbettas

      If do not have a lot of money and there is no good used marked you can access, try building most yourself. Building a tank is actually not that hard. Get the cut pieces from a glass store (you can even get it to your specification) and glue them together with silicon. There is a lot of videos and tutorials that show how to do it right. Plant you can also get from other people who keep aquariums if they have good growth. The only things you really need to buy, and should buy new, are filter and lamp.

    • @yourlocaltoad5102
      @yourlocaltoad5102 5 років тому +14

      Bettas breathe air from the surface and if its too cold or dry they can get problems.
      So the cover makes sure that the air above the tank stays at about the same temperature as the water is and that it stays humid.
      Also bettas can jump and so a cover is a nice way to prevent finding a dried up fish on the floor.

      They do not "usually" jump, it's a stress response to discomfort, i.e. poor water quality. The likelihood is quite minimal if you use floating plants and provide good water chemistry, at that point the lid is more of a precaution than a necessity.

    • @ZSFries
      @ZSFries 5 років тому +7

      @@dominic.h.3363 Bettas do, occasionally jump no matter the water quality (even if you got 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0 nitrate from planting heavily). It depends on their personality and mood but bettas are indeed the most notorious jumpers in the aquarium hobby (they even jump out of water to catch food mid air). And most people who gets rimless tanks don't get floating plants.. They wanted full unblocked light for their other demanding plants. Floating plants replaces the lid, but if the tank doesn't have enough floating plants or shade, a lid is a must. The likelihood of bettas jumping out without a lid or floating plant is 50/50, it's a huge gamble. Most of the time they jump, and they ended up back in the tank, but some other time they don't...

I already have all of these things except the plants and the hardscape, but seeing how good this much lower budget tank worked out, I honestly don't know how to proceed, because I like your simpler setup better than my idea of a native tank with advanced plants, and I don't know what to do with all this junk I already have. :-/

      Adding additional Co2 to the tank can probably be risky with bettas because they breathe air and Co2 could accumulate above the water.

    • @dominic.h.3363
      @dominic.h.3363 5 років тому

      @@kiri23234 I have been using CO2 in tanks with fish that have labyrinth organs for several years, never had any issues. The surface agitation of a filter outlet is usually enough to circulate air, and since you have a partial lid anyway, there is no reason to not completely fill up the aquarium, so CO2 doesn't have a large column of air enclosed by glass to fill up. The rest is taken care of by your plants that produce enough oxygen to go around, my tanks have so many oxygen bubbles around the plants, especially the floating roots, that it looks as if I filled up the tank with soda water.

    Unfortunate where I live all of this is very expensive 😔 that piece of driftwood you have in there would go for like $30 bucks without a doubt. Not to mention, if I bought a bundle of those plants it's would run anywhere from $20-$50 bucks and unfortunately most come with little travelers like worms and snails 🤦😔 but this is amazing and I'm glad you were able to set it up for cheap and it came out this amazing!!!♥️

      I think it would water propagate for several months before perhaps rotting. Not sure, as I haven't kept it in water myself. If you want an alternative, something like pothos or sweet potato can live in water for a very long time and provide a similar effect.

    • @aeneas1677
      @aeneas1677 5 років тому +3

      bianca boman the thing with pathos is that it absorbs all the nitrates in the water, and doesn't leave them for the other plant. you could try in an established planted tank when all the plants are grown in but it would still be bit risky

    I love the scape but unfortunately where a lot of us live it is not that cheap! This is what I've learned over time as the cheapest way to get aquarium supplies
    1. Always be on the lookout for good deals! No matter if you're setting up a tank or not if there is some sort of crazy good deal on hardscape - get it! Check the rocks at the dollar store every once in a while, and tanks at goodwill or other thrift stores.
    2. The best way to get cheap rocks or stones for aquariums is to find some sort of landscaping rocks at a garden center and use them.
    3. For tanks get a $1 per gallon sale tank and take the rims off and redo the silicone. Otherwise, if it's a small tank you can make it yourself.
    4. Make your own glass lid at lowes or home depot.
    5. The light option here is awesome! You can find cheap HOB filters and heaters online in my experience.
    5. Finding wood is probably the hardest part. You can find some cheap small pieces on eBay but they take a long time to ship. If you're lucky enough to live somewhere where you could find driftwood by water (and it's legal to take) that's the best option.
    6. Sifting out organic soil and topping it off works well instead of an expensive planted tank substrate. Otherwise, root tabs are a good option.
    7. Check locally! See what Craigslist or Facebook marketplace has to offer.
    8. eBay has a lot of good deals on plants and local stores usually aren't too bad. You can check out forums for planted tanks on Reddit and see if anyone on there is willing to sell some extra plants to you.
