Just to clear things up, tannins are not toxic to fish. Bettas, tetras, discus, angels, and shrimp thrive in acidic, tannic water.

      @TheCineScaper  2 роки тому +77

Yes I know that tannins are good. I don't know exactly what comes out of this wood, but the smell wasn't very good either. I find alder cones and catappa leaf much safer.

Are backyard pinecones safe? How often do you re- landscape the terrarium? Annually? Biannually? Triannually? My beta lived 4 yrs (after purchase) in a filled 5 gal tank, is it sufficient? Your 10 gal tank appears to contain less than half capacity of water.

Shrimp do not prefer acidic water, they do best in higher pH with more minerals than tannins in the water.

Some info: the brown water leaking from the wood are the same tannin as from the catappa leaves. It is completely safe and the smell you mentioned in another comment is just the normal smell of the wood, not pleasant but not toxic at all. Next time you can do like 3 water changes to keep the tannin and to remove the wood smell or as you mentioned just boil it.
    Amazing scape otherwise !

For anyone who sees the moss ball and wants to get one: make sure you either get them from a reputable seller or *thoroughly* check yours for zebra mussels, an extremely invasive and damaging species that have been spotting in moss balls a lot lately.

@@mallorys2793 I’m not sure about Canada’s status on them because of the Zebra muscles, but they’ll likely be widely unavailable until the Russia Ukraine conflict is solved and Ukraine is able to resume its exportation of them. They were the major exporter of the plant.
Japan has classified them as a protected species, thus limiting or even banning exporting them on a wide scale. From what I hear a lot of their’s sold in LFS’s are imported from Ukraine.
I hope we get them back soon, they’re such a great plant.

Ferns are very tricky at times, you can easily over water which kills them. How do you think they will go having their roots only in water? I can se that the roots aren’t fully submerged tho, but I was still thinking they’ll get too much water. I’ve killed so many ferns in pots I have now given up, not enough water, too much or something else…they just die on me. Also the same with the Ivy plant? I just killed a variegated one by it sitting in too much water. Cut all stems off to see if it shoots again but I doubt it.
Please let us know how they go on the wood.
I’d luv to use wood hanging into n over a tank like yours…

You might want to try wick watering for your trouble plants. I use acrylic yarn for a wick out of one of the bottom holes and potting soil that is 1 part peat, 1 part perlite, with a little worm poop mixed in. Also, some plants can do well with just their roots in aquarium water because the filter helps keep the water fresh and oxygenated.

I really do love the tank, looks amazing; only thing I would say is that corydoras do prefer a fine sand due to them sifting through it to find food, as a result some can cut themselves on gravel and that obviously leaves them open to infection. It is a smooth gravel so not the worst thing, but I just wanted to let you know

Amazing video, i was vibing to the music which was really relaxing 😌 love the color orange on your backlght which is a mellow touch, honestly though when you were acclimating your fish, and you poured the corys in, i would not mix any of the water from the bag the corys were in or your snail bc that most definitely cross contaminates your water, it can sadly introduce a disease or something funky from your lfs, i usually just use a shrimp net or if they are big enough i grab them and slowly release them into the tank, whatever your method is, thats your choice but highly recommend never pouring water from the bag the fish are in, into the tank, a few years back i did that into my fluval flex 15 right, about a hundred dollars of cpd's dwarf emeralds, sparkling gouramis and they were so nice and chunky and i loved them, so one day i bought a tiny female rocket killifish, she was so small, like a cm long, super suspect but i just poured her out with the water in the bag she came in, bc she was so small, had a bad feeling about it at my lfs... but bought her anyway.... and low and behold a few days later, little red worm hanging out her butt, and that was camellanus worms, infected all my nano fish and killed them in 2wks...it was so prolific you have to treat the water column and there food with fenbendazole, and once its in one of your tanks, its probably in your other tanks, like extremely freaking bad parasite, it was a nightmare, the worm litterly killed my fish bc i poured her and her disease into my tank, i then had to bleach it out, lost everything and all my plants also it was a bummer 😕

I tried Asparagus setaceus in my shallow, cleaned the roots from the soil, had it acclimate to water for 3 weeks, and moved to shallow with only roots in water. After a week or so, the leaves went yellow. I may have damaged roots when I made the bush smaller, or could my light be to intense?

The red berries of _Asparagus setaceus_ are very toxic, especially to pets. Bear that in mind if you fall in love with that plant, get rid of it's flowers as soon as you see them. Hedera is also toxic, that counts for pets as well. So if you have pets, stick with Maidenhair, it's safe :)

Even the snail needs to be in plastic bag before get into to new tank ???? Wow this is new to me, you make it to the new level of safetiness. And you can use Seachem Purigen for the color from the wood.

It's a nice tank set-up but the water is too yellow looking for my taste though tannin is good. I have so many marino moss balls in my tank set-up I love them you inspired me to get an maiden hair fern to put in my tank set-up. I love the look of this plant but kill it each time in soil so perhaps water will help it thrive. I have so far 4 bamboo and one lily growing in my filter box as I am scared to take the lid off my tank in case Toby my betta tries to jump out!

Always nice to see your gorgeous face. I admire your artistic scaping so much. I really find you to be one of the unique designers no matter the layout. I still love the wood scape that hangs over edge into tank and doesn’t even touch the substrate…easy to lift if needed but nothing contaminating the gravel/substrate. Leaves all that underneath area to view the fish you had…that’s my fave scape…..well until today maybe..lol
    Love from Perth, West Australia…Lisa

Its great what you did here. But tannins are not toxic.
Boiling the wood doesnt prevent it either.
In fact. It will remove most of it but it can also destroy the fibers causing the wood to rot faster.
    Especialy thinner pieces.
Its better to do frequent waterchanges and to filter over active carbon to remove tannins when they are unwanted.
