    Satchel charges, Bangalore torpedoes, claymores, shaped charges were awesome to utilize on fixed fortifications or built up areas. As a 0351 Marine, it was always great to work with combat engineers since they brought more explosives.

      Claymore mines were not developed until after WW2. The widely used M18A2 wasn’t issued till the 60’s. It’s more of a defensive anti personnel weapon. Not really for use against bunkers etc.

    My dad, who was a combat infantryman in the Pacific during WW 2, said that the Japanese had used a sandstone formation as a bunker. He said they threw a satchel charge on the roof of the bunker. The blast wave of the charge turned the sandstone into sand and the whole thing collapsed. He said that as they walked over the area arms came up out of the sand and they pulled survivors out of the ground.

    The Finnish satchel charges (kasapanos) were either factory made explosive filled sheet metal boxes with grenade handle, or field made by taping or tying explosives with a metal wire or a string or what ever you had on hand to a regular stick grenade. Sometimes soldiers would go to the nearest minefield to collect Soviet mines (like PDM-6) to use their explosives in kasapano's.

      I hope you meant "Panther" tank, as "Panzer" in German is a catch-all generic noun or adjective for armor or armored (tank/tank destroyer/car/AFV); i.e. Panther as a big cat or a specific tank type is the same in English & German but Panzer (Armor) is not. Simply put, a Panzer Panther is an armored Panther (I,II,III,IV) tank. Likewise, a Tiger I tank would be a Panzer Tiger I. 👍

    One time movie-makers get it right that being that close to an explosion is DANGEROUS. No one has used an incident with one Marine (I believe on Tarawa) who was literally blown out of his pants planting the first charge. He then answered "what do you need"? With "MORE DYNAMITE".
    Hackworth mentions in "About Face" one instance when one of his men (Korean War) attached a rope to a charge and spun it overhead (cowboy style) to get enough momentum to reach a bunker (and keep themselves out of the blast).
    Each squad in the game "Computer Ambush" 1980 could carry one demolition charge and set it in a location. The computer player would inevitably use it on a suicide run.

    It should be noted that the multi head stick grenade deployed by German forces were used to destroy the radiator stacks at the rear of a T-34. In the training film "Manner Gegen Panzer" (men against tanks) you can see a failed attempt where the grenade falls off detonating beside the T-34 causing minimal damage.

  • @Gungho1a

    WW2 australian army (and later) used a 2 quart oil can full of explosive, using an adapter to fit a standard grenade as the igniter. It meant troops didn't have to carry detonators, plus was cheap and easy to produce. They also have a beer can bomb, with a beer can full of explosive, taking a grenade igniter assembly...it carries a lot more explosive than a grenade, and is a decent blast effect.

    My grandfather told me of another use of grenade bundles: faking artillery support.
    When the Wehrmacht was on its last leg in Normandie, they were still prohibited from retreating and got told to fight to the last drop. Allegedly, when they requested ressupply, they were even told to mount bayonettes instead and essentially do a banzai charge, as the last ones having ammunition would be the ones in the second line ready to shoot anyone who dares to retreat...
    Of course, many were thinking of how to run away or surrender, however both could easily end in their death instead and stories circulated that the Americans would take no prisoners. In fact, the Americans had recently gunned down a whole bunch of POWs after erroneously identifying them as Waffen SS (which makes it not much better, though it was motivated by revenge).
    According to my grandfather, some units thus focussed their efforts on delaying American advance and that included pretending to still have artillery support and obviously making all sorts of traps. Then, when the British would conquer a different sector, they would run parallel to the frontline and surrender to the British...

    Satchel charges have generally been replaced with C4, as C4 can be easier to work with.
    while they talk about early use, in reality these date back to almost the creation of gunpowder.. as a bag or satchel full of gunpowder with fuse could be carried and packed under bridges or such by sappers.

    • @vacgyverfin5170
      @vacgyverfin5170 10 місяців тому +1

    • @jenniferstewarts4851
      @jenniferstewarts4851 10 місяців тому +1

      @@vacgyverfin5170 yes and no. The point here is that C4 was much easier to carry. A satchel charge was fairly large... a satchel charge might be 8.8 pounds while a demolotion charge might be 20 pound. But that limits what a solider can carry. However giving soldiers 1 pound blocks of C4 that can be stored, gathered when needed, and used for demolition work that way... is a lot easier and lighter per individual.

    Good video!! Can remember making satchel charges while in US Army as a Combat Engineer out of SANDBAGS and CLAYMORE MINE CARRY BAGS and out of other material. We also made some out of empty MRE POUCHES and even CARDBOARD MRE BOXES. Basically, we were just fooling around trying to see what would make a good satchel charge had we ever needed to make one for whatever reason in a combat situation. Do remember us trying to destroy an anti-tank ditch one time by digging into the side of the ditch and placing as much demo as possible and blowing it - thus the idea of using MRE BOXES + using cratering charges. It was hoped the explosion would collapse the side of the ditch thus filling it in with dirt and making it easy for vehicles to negotiate - did not fare out as planned for still needed to get personnel into the ditch and use shovels. Usually stuffed as much C-4 inside each container as possible, attach the blasting cap/det cord/time fuse/fuse ignitor then go to whatever designated item to blow up and light the time fuse and get out of the area and wait for the B-O-O-M!! Also used dynamite (not as good), and blocks of TNT of various sizes (usually the best). Also, would place the charges on bridges or other obstacles to figure out the best BANG for the various types of satchels we made. THANKS!! for the memories!!

    When I was playing a badguy in commercial nuclear security, I almost broke my kneecap because of a satchel charge (simulated).
    So what happened was, I had a gas mask pouch on each hip, each loaded with an 8 lb breaching charge (basically, a half gallon jug filled with sand, and a length off 550 cord as the "fuse"). Had a leg strap on each one so they wouldn't flop around as I was running. And boy, were we running, because they were shooting at us like crazy.
    Anyhoo, as I'm sprinting across this parking lot, with everyone and their kid sister throwing rounds at me, the belt attachments for the bag let go, but the leg strap didn't. And 8 lbs slid from my hip to my ankle while I'm in a full sprint. Landed directly on my right knee.
    You shoulda heard me caterwalling! But I managed to drag myself to where I needed to go.

      Jack we had a retired State Trooper who was hired to test security at our Nuclear Power Station come into our Gun shop one Day . He showed us his Brief case and put it on the counter and opened it up . He sawed down a 10 gauge Shotgun and mounted it inside to be fired from the Handle . Ex Police are immune to Rules ? This Guy was hard core . I am glad he never brought simulated explosives Into our Store ! Jack thank You for your efforts to keep us Safe .

      @@markcantemail8018 Surely he had it registered it as an SBS (did the tax stamp thing and ATF paperwork, etc) before cutting the barrels under 16inches right?? Otherwise he committed a federal felony, and our Gov takes illegal weapon charges seriously, minimum several years in prison. Also doesnt the NFA have a clause that covers guns that are intentionally obscured as other objects? I wouldnt have been a snitch in that situation but I wouldve politely reminded him what if any laws he broke and to get the fuck out of my shop before im associated with him lol

      @sergeantbigmac Shotgun with a barrel under 12" is an AOW (any other weapon). I believe a form 1 for that is a $5 tax stamp.
      Interestingly, an AR-15 pistol with an overall length of >26", with vertical forward grip, is simply a firearm. It falls into no other legal category. It's not a pistol, a rifle, or an NFA item. Your local laws may vary.

    The "bundle of grenades" looks so insanely dangerous to use.
    I don't know the odds for this scenario, but what if the peripheral grenades don't go off instantly, but only sets off their fuse. The initial blast will throw 6-8 grenades, at high velocity in 6-8 random directions, and then you'll have a second wave of explosions wherever they happens to land...

    Though you didn’t include a mention, the Japanese, I believe, did use satchel charges against US tanks in the pacific. Not 100% though on what type of satchel they used, or if it was makeshift.

    • @DeltaEchoGolf
      @DeltaEchoGolf Рік тому +2

      Late in the war, the Japanese would dig a hole in a road or path and place an artillery shell along with a soldier in it to detonate it! They also used a stick with a shape-charge on the end for anti-tank use. Having metal rods on the end (stand-off probes) to endure proper distance when detonated. Unlike the German anti-tank charge that had magnets. The Japanese soldier had to physically hold the charge onto the tank when detonating it. Blowing himself up with it!

    Hello Johnny
    Some facts from your previous video :-

    While i may be wrong, but the British had some specially designed ground attack likes contemporary to the American A-6 like the Supermarine Attacker and the Hawker Sea Hawk, of which the latter was capable of operating from an Air craft carrier. The Sea Hawk served with valor for Indian navy as a part of air arm of India's first aircraft carrier , the INS Vikrant 1961 (Ex HMS Hercules ) of the majestic class of aircraft carriers .
    This was before the Sea Harriers would eventually replace them as VTOLs for the British Indian and Spanish aircraft carriers. And the Soviets would also design their own YAK 141 VTOL.
    TBH I prefer the VTOL over fixed wing for Aircraft carriers.

    I've exaggerated about these WW2 weapons, just by thinking about restoring these old-timer WW2 satchel charges. Even though these things should belong in a museum. They should be fake ones in order to be put on display. The reason why I exaggerated over this is that, I've seen countless numbers of WW2 combat rifles, machine guns, shotguns, revolvers, lugers, and automatics get restored. Even guns that were used just right long before WW2.
