I find it so funny that Germans developed a special non-magnetic coating on their tanks to prevent magnetic grenades from attaching, so the Allies in response just made explosives super sticky
The coating probably helped the sticky grenade stick tbh, more texture for the adhesive to grip on to and stay put
@@M50A1 But pointless, as the sides of a tank were generally too thick to penetrate by the Sticky bombs, except for some light armor.
The German magnetic sticking charge used a shaped charge to penetrate around 100mm of armor.
But you probably have the most success with molotov cocktails, so both sticky bomb and magnetic charge were kinda unnecessary and overly specialized.
@@kimjanek646 well unless you put it on top of the tank
And the even funnier part none of the Allied forces used any antitank weapons that relied on magnets. Only the Germans did.
These bombs were so sticky though they were a danger to the user
"Carlyle! Use your sticky bombs on that Panzer!"
My god I haven't heard anyone quote Call Of Duty Finest Hour in a long time.
Call of Duty Finest Hour is the first time I heard about that weapon. Nice.
@@darkphoenix4568 necessity being the mother of invention, desperate days indeed..
@@eamonnclabby7067 Finest Hour was the first game I saw it. It was fun to use.
@@eamonnclabby7067 let's not forget the STEN MK2 doubled as a grenade.
I do think that the improvised sticky bombs shown in saving private Ryan were also real things, they actually did exist in the manual.
Actually the first time I heard of a sticky bomb was in Halo: Combat Evolved.
It literally landing on top of my head and all I could think in the two seconds was "what's this blue glow?" before basking in its fiery plasma-based glory.
What, like a glowing blue spider? Get it off!
Halo was my fist exposure to the idea too
There was an episode of Dad's Army where they were training with grenades and Jonsey tries to use a sticky bomb on a fake tank only to walk away still holding the bomb that is stuck to one of the binlids that made up the tank.
Dang that's a missed opportunity.
That’s were I fist heard of them
Was about to say the same thing.
That show was genius.
Usage of Batman instantly makes a video 100x more fun.
Holy sticky bombs ,Batman..!!...
I first learnt about the sticky bomb back in CoD World at War. I always find the British N74 Sticky Grenade unique due to the design and always wondered that if they actually use these during WW2 and does it always stick to everything ? (because in the game, it sticks to everything) and always wondered if its actually effective against armoured tanks and vehicles.
They were actively used the first few years of the war, the sticky part is a very strong glue so yes it did stick to many things... including the soldiers themselves. I believe that's one of the reasons why they got rid of it.
@@vylvylvyl8532 it unintentionally turned some soldiers into suicide bombers
It usually stuck to most things.
3:44 when a sticky bomb sticks to your trousers
My Father was in the RAOC in the 1950’s and was tasked with disposal of these wretched objects. They were extremely dangerous even years later, and were intensely disliked by the end users.
Id heard that and being so sticky probably killed a lot of those using rhem.
Their bad reputation stuck on them!🤣
Foxhole has a good example of the sticky bomb
Well done video Johnny for it lived up to your claim in passing!
You even added the bits about the the home guard & resistance fighters on the continent using sticky bombs which was a very nice touch that didn't come to my mind.
How you get all this footage is quite impressive.
Thanks Arni! I was hoping you'd like this one. Sometimes I have to stretch the imagination for clips but I take it as an opportunity to add some humor.
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq Might I suggest the No. 69 grenade Grenade No. 82 (Gammon grenade) both impact fise grenades so once the cap was removed it had no timer but primed mid air then blew up on contact
Both had very little shrapnel but all charge unless a sleeve added for the NO.69.
Both of these grenades were the early day equivalent to c4 used to blow holes though wall in building to assist in mobility when clearing urban regions.
The No'69 favoured by infantry while the gammon bomb No.82 favoured by special forces primarily paratroopers for it was also good at destroying vehicles which the paratroop's did in sabotage missions a lot behind enemy lines.
No.69 Bakelite plastic filled 3 different explosive for application.
No.82 Gammon bomb used a standard issued bag I can't recall.
I don't think I have ever seen a film portrayed these 2 grenades that were developed by troops & used by ww2 British troops till the end of ww2.
After the war this form of destructive mobility & sabotage seemed to not really occur after to the same extent after ww2.
Clever designs that were liked by troops but just faded away with time & never improved upon sadly.
Imagine the feeling of pulling the pin, and preparing to throw one of these, and feel it pulling on the back of your uniform.
-How did you kill that tank?
-Pvt. Smith successfully deployed his tactical-trousers on that tank, Sir!
Nice video as all ways, Johnny!
Johnny, you damn near slew me with the Batman clip! For some reason that scene popped into my head the moment I saw ypur "sticky bomb" title, and you (as usual) delivered. Thank you!
ps- I'd rather take my chances with a Molotov cocktail. I know which way my luck goes, I empathized _far_ too much with the unsuccessful sticky bomber in SPR.
Homer shows us all how easily a sticky bomb could end up on the middle of our back.
Called a sticky bomb and the name stuck.
So that's where the Risk of Rain stick bomb art came from!
Sticky bomb! in the wheel!
Sticky bombs, light the fuses!
The quotes of rifleman using the sticky bomb upgrade in company of heroes 1, in that game that bomb does decent damage to all but the heaviest german armor and usually damages the engine or otherwise immobilizes the target, making it highly effective for pinning it inplace for something else to finish the job.
In the Telly war movies I didn't use this. I did drink some booz.
When i was a young Boy Scout, one of the US Army vet parents gave us a US Army field manual. i believe it was a reproduction manual that contained sections from various eras, but it was full of all kinds of fund things. the parent pointed out that anything marked "field expedient" was usually something very interesting. he told us that anything "field expedient" was either something a solider did on the fly that made it into a report later, or something that egg heads thought up but was never tested.
My favorite was the field expedient MRE mine (or some similar name). It involved trapping the gas generated by a self heating MRE and using that as an explosive. And of course, there were a few stick mine or sticky bomb "recipes" in there. that book basically just led to us blowing things up and playing with fire and explosives and making tiny diorama sized booby traps
I believe in Britain the field expedient was leaving rations for the enemy to eat, thus convincing them that invading was pointless due to the poor quality of the cuisine.
Awesome topic, Johnny. I did not know about the British Sticky Bomb version before now. Thanks for sharing!
I first found about this when I played Call of Duty Finest Hour on GameCube when I was a kid, and I remember it being useful. Great video as always, also love the sticky puns, too. Just try not to get stuck with them.
If you do a vid on the Tam O'Shanter or Glengarry (but not the See You Jimmy) you can use the Blackadder clip about "Wee Jock Poo-Pong McPlop".
Greatly appreciated topic from me, good job
Excellent use of Homer, the original ( and best,if very camp...) Batman....what a dodgy bit of ordinance, thanks for sharing this ,very interesting stuff with us ...and yes things were desperate, by all accounts after Dunkirk, there are still a few pill boxes ( built very quickly on Lord Leverhulme,s orders) ,here on the Wirral ,enjoy the remainder of your weekend, Johnny...cheers...E..
I gotta give massive street cred to the Soldier who was able to ditch and throw their trousers... in combat... in under 5 seconds.
That's MOTIVATED!
Good old sticky bomb
Hmmm, I remember the first time I read it was in a series of documentaries about World War II by Cornelius Ryan, "When the soldiers were the tactic of throwing grenades stuffed into their greased socks at tanks, there was a soldier who blew himself up because his socks stuck to his hands."
(As you can see, it's no coincidence that the great documentary author Cornelius Ryan and the movie title Saving Private Ryan)
Puns, puns and more puns. THANK YOU for that.
Keep up the good work. Always nice to see your videos.
The Holy hand grenade of Antioch merits a mention, especially with the were rabbits...
He stuck to his guns as one may say
Great, now you have all of those puns stuck in my head
I find it curios how ineffective the grenade was but the Germans still applied Zimmerit.
and i would like to know why if there was another reason why they did.
They liked their own magnetic mines in theory so they assumed other nations were going to use them but it never really happened.
Zimmerit was intended to counter magnetic anti-tank mines not sticky bombs. Of course, no one outside of Germany field magnetic AT mines.
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq oh ok I thought that zimmerit would prevent both sticky and magnetic thank you for the clarification
Zimmerit was made up of a Zinc compound that was primarily designed to defeat magnetic mines. Funnily enough Germany was the only nation to use magnetic mines in a large amount. Zimmerit stopped being applied to late-war tanks for this reason.
No I heard it from my grandfather, he used to put them on the back of German tanks up close in North Africa.
He was a sapper so he said he assemble them. And something about about tank trying to run them over, them lying down and letting the tank pass over them and popping up on the other side with a surprise for Kerry.
Never heard of this thing. Amazing video as usual, Johnny.
the germans had the Hafthohlladung, had a magnet to attach it to tanks
Tom Hanks’ character mentioned something about a field manual referencing the improvised sticky bomb. I know Spielberg went into a great deal of detail making the film. As much as possible being historically accurate. I would imagine he would have a team of historians who were subject matter experts. Who would have been familiar with oddly specific things like this. Using primary sources like declassified field manuals and such. It’s what I do when I do research is find old army manuals because they make manuals for everything. A great “how-to”
But was there or was there not a sticky bomb in a US Army flied manual? I would imagine such research was done for this video, which doesn't corroborate that mention. Does anyone know?
I'm somewhat skeptical about Spielberg's commitment to realism, given (among other things) that another character refers to P-51 fighters as "tank busters", which was not even a myth during the war.
That sticky situation pun was great
"Sir the enemy have devised a new weapon " " Oh really private and what is it?" Exploding trousers sir." Those Englander schwien!!!
"It's in the manual...look it up..."..
"You probably first heard of a sticky bomb from Saving Private Ryan"
*laughs in drunk Scotsman*
lol
never heard of it
Great video my guy you are definitely getting the attention you deserve! Back in mid 2022 I found you with 59.9k subscribers and now you are on the way to 110k subscribers man. Great work and great content
Thanks for sticking with me man! Hope to have an A-10 video out soon
We are tied up in a sticky wicket now
The soldier who threw his trousers along with a stuck sticky grenade was probably throwing away soiled trousers.
“Sticky bombs; light the fuses!”
“Sticky bombs; in the wheels!”
“Throw a sticky bomb!”
69 tonnes of rolling fail are hard countered by a 35 munition magic sock. Love it.
Insert stuck in the middle with you here.
"Sticking around," you got me there.
At the battle of Milne Bay the Australian found the heat a humidity prevented the Sticky bombs from sticking to the 2 Japanese MK95 tanks being used during the attack
Nice RoR2 sticky bomb in the thumbnail.
I'm late but keep up the good quality videos johnny :)
I'll tell you where you can stick your sticky bomb.
A weird thing. There will be a lot of laughter then.
Comical WW2 Benny Hill style.
Great use of Blackadder scene :)
Thanks for sharing ❤️
One problem I see with is that the spherical shape meant it had a very small surface area to actually stick to the flat metal surfaces of the tank. Basically a pinpoint.
i thought the same thing, the adhesion would be great if they made it a flat sheet, something like a spatula, as long as it doesn't land on it's side.
Same, but if they made the bomb flat, it's almost impossible to land a throw so perfect that it lands flat on the surface.
What they should have done, was to make the bomb kinda soft, like a beach ball, so that it squashes out against the surface.
In the end, it is a stupid weapon. I don't think they were very effective, even if they did stick to the surface.
Ah that weird ball thing that bounces off everything in BF5
The material properties are interesting. Most glues don't stick immediately and having just this shell shouldn't prevent it from drying out...
Cool that you use fotage from the Forgotten Hope mod, i remember thoes sticky nades had good animation.
How do you remove the casing if it's stuck to it? does the casing have a teflon coating? Or does it just not stick to smooth metal?
Could you do a video on the Gammon grenade?
Watch tank chats for their episode as well
The Batman clip at the end really made the video.
There are allot of accounts that state that the cover for the bomb, would not close all the way, and would sometimes even leak out the sticky resin that would cause it to stick to the user, or as well cause the bomb not to be sticky. Most of these accounts come from them being used in the North Africa campaign, such as from the SAS.
This thing should've had a stick granade it could go with. You can make satchel charges, use it as anti infintary granade.
I would however would ask for the thing to be kept in boxes where it can be retrived for use and not carried around and sticking to things.
sticky spam (against tanks) before it was cool
2:42 man, that is trolling your teammates! 😅
I suggest videos on the:
Glock
Sig Sauer
Claymore sword
Sterling submachine gun
Mrs C carried a Sterling sub machine gun and a Browning side arm to protect her patients if the Russians arrived in the Cold war in West Germany...The Gurkhas carried Sterling sub machine guns in the Falklands war...excellent weapon...
I believe that the first assessment committee described it as "an objectionable device"....
what makes me a good demoman?
every tf2 demoman has entered the chat drunk
"What makes me a good demoman? Well, if i wasn't a good demoman i wouldn't be sittin- **vanishes*" "
Heroes&Generals also has the sticky bomb, as well as the H3 magnetic mine in pretty good graphics quality. Could have used it in your video!
sorry, but i heared about sticky bombs in Team fortress 2
My father was in the Home Guard. They trained in a local quarry with sticky bombs. He threw a sticky bomb towards a steel plate. It bounced off and rolled down the slope towards him. He ran and then threw himself down away from the bomb. It exploded before it reached him and his boot soles took the force of the explosion.
These things really look like a huge hazard for the soldiers themselves. Sticky enough to adhere to clothing but not enough to adhere to armor.
Yes but the improvised version like in the movie was frequently used.
There was more than one occasion when the sticky bombs got stuck on the person rather than the tank. The results were predictable
The civilians have a sticky bomb...
We call it Taco Bell.
Ive got a vague recollection they used this as a joke on Dads army in the UK at some point. Either in the series or the film and probably with Jones as the cause of the problem.
How did the sticky bomb cause the track to come apart when it was stuck to the bogey wheel? The bogey wheel didn't look damaged to me
How do you find all that footage from obscure mods for 2 decade old games? Well done!
Private Ryan, Mister Bean, Batman and Homer Simpson. What a team up that would be.
You missed Telly the BOSS!
Video on C4 next?
im just gonna say it...STICKY BOMB!!!
The case was adapted from a ball cock float already in production and the glue was the now what was to become the infamous contact adhesive the yellow Evostik .
If your close enough to throw a grenade at a tank….you’ve done something significantly wrong
R.I.P.
I know such a fact that Call of duty players and developers are so obssesed in a weird thing called "sticky bomb" or "semtex".
I found out about stickybomb , in Juge Dredd comics way back when .
"Your job is to take this sticky ball, run up to that giant machine of death, do not get shot by supporting infantry/enemy tanks/our own artillery aiming at this tank, stick it to the road wheels, and maybe you will reduce it's mobility if you did not stick it too yourself. "
Wait, did you coordinate the timing of this with @thetankmuseum?
Nah though they're a pretty sweet organization
If anyone ever makes a video about the most unpopular weapons of WWII the sticky bomb needs to be in first place!
Did the improvised sticky bombs from Saving Private Ryan exist/make sense though?
2:36 favored by Churchill proves it was a bad idea
Good old CoD1 taught me about sticky bombs^^
The funniest thing is how the soldiers in SPR do not know what a sticky bomb is. They are airbourne soldiers. They were literally force fed their manual. If anybody would know what is inside that book, it was these guys…
00:19 the forbidden caramel apple
Liked for the risk of rain sprite
It was made of glass? That seems so weird
One Problem is that if this gets stuck on A soldier using it, it will kill them
Must have been a real ”sticky” situation for the guy who got it stuck to his pants.
the original Halo plasma grenade.
Sehr gutes video-
No. I heard of a sticky bomb on a Dad's Army episode from the 1970s.
A British TV Comedy
Great show
2.5 million made, evidence for maybe a couple of dozen tanks actually being destroyed by it. Sometimes Churchill didn't help the war effort.
