Is there anything that this excellent old school mechanic cannot do? I doubt there is anything he cannot do. You would have made an excellent teacher WB. Much respect and thanks for all your great videos
Ah, yes, the 3-5-R Wave Plate. Back 10 years ago, it was only $6.18 for just the Wave Plate, not the Sonnax Repair Kit. I had an '09 Saturn Outlook XR which we bought as a GM Exec vehicle w/19k miles, loaded out with every option. Great vehicle, except I knew the transmission was a ticking time bomb with the Wave Plate issue. Before the powertrain warranty expired, the transmission case developed a fluid leak, which required the dealership to drop the cradle, remove the transmission, and separate the cases to address the leak. Having a good relationship with the GM SA, she agreed they would replace the 3-5-R Wave Plate with a new one "while they were in there" fixing the case leak. even though the Wave Plate had not shattered (yet). Iirc, I paid for the Wave Plate and 1/2 hr worth of labor to R&R the part. The 3-5-R Wave Plate shatters because the supplier skipped the important step of heat treating the Wave Plate. Therefore, the thermal cycling of the transmission temp from normal driving eventually causes the material to fail from fatigue. Typically, the Wave Plates would start breaking soon after the Powertrain Warranty expired (5-yr/100k miles), so the customer would be SOL, while a few "got lucky" and had the failure within the warranty period. The reason this failure is so expensive? When the Wave Plate fails, it can dump metal debris through-out the transmission hydraulic fluid circuit, so worse case, the entire transmission needs to be removed and torn-down to get out all that metal debris. It's really a shame that GM screwed-up the 3.6L DOHC/6-spd powertrain, 1st with 10k OLMs, which killed the Cam Chains, and then 2nd with the 3-5-R Wave Plate, which killed the transmissions.
I was a tech in a Saturn dealership back when the Outlooks, Auras and Vues with the 3.6 powertrain came out. We did TONS of these transmissions and more often than not they actually were within the warranty period still. Most were in the Outlooks though as they are the heaviest of the bunch. Most of them that we saw deposited metal debris throughout the entire transmission and often damaged non-wear parts or even the case. The ones that were repaired would always come back a few months later with the wave plate broken again, so we just started replacing the entire transmission. GM didn't even have a service bulletin regarding approved repairs yet so they were happy to take in entire failed transmissions so they could investigate the issue.... and we sent them lots. I remember I got the very first Outlook that came in with a transmission issue to our dealership. It was not a known issue yet. The vehicle owner got the transmission so hot trying to drive the thing in that the 3 5 R clutch pack actually welded itself together, which pretty well turned the entire guts of the transmission into shrapnel. It was the worst smelling transmission I've ever come across. I've also never seen so many broken pieces fall out of a transmission either before or since then. I still have a few pieces of it in my toolbox in my "yes, this actually happened" collection. Every techs jaw hit the floor when they saw what happened inside that transmission. Little did any of us know that we were all about to get VERY familiar with these transmissions in the coming months. They actually had another lesser known issue prior to the now notorious timing chain problems. There was a bad batch of cylinder heads that were cast with a softer aluminum that they were supposed to have, most of the first 2 model years had to have both cylinder heads replaced as a result. The softer metal caused the camshafts the wear away at cylinder head and eventually the lateral run out would cause cam position sensor codes, usually it would happen on bank 2 before it happened on bank 1 but they often came in with codes corresponding to both. It was an engine out job on the Outlooks and Vues (which were most affected by the issue) and it could be done with the engine in on the Auras. We didn't see a whole lot of Auras with the issue though. Mostly Outlooks, some Vues. I dropped so many subframes out of those Outlooks I could almost literally do it with my eyes closed. Most of them came to me because I could turn them around a lot quicker that anybody else in the shop. It wasn't unusual for me to drop the subframe out of an Outlook for either a transmission replacement or a cylinder head replacement 4 or 5 times a week. I could often start one first thing in the morning and have it done (if I wasn't interrupted) and back on the road by 2 or 3 the same day. I actually made a lot of money off of those Outlooks, was one of very few warranty jobs I didn't mind doing. I probably did 500 of them by the time they shut down the Saturn brand.
This is so enjoyable watching, it flashes me back to my younger years when I used to work with a certified tech that showed me how to tear motors apart and rebuild them, I so miss being able to do this kind of stuff, but thank goodness you do this and share with us, Big Thumbs up!! Liked , Happy Holidays Pal
Excellent video Mike.... I have never been mechanically inclined but watching your videos has taught me things I never knew regarding vehicles and what makes them run. Your talents are incredible and really admire you and what you do. I am hooked on your videos and enjoy learning from a great teacher. Good luck getting the Saturn fixed and back on the road......I have no doubt you will do it.
Maybe the fact that you do not have a tripod is one advantage of your filming, you change the camera position more often and it makes it more lively and less static. I loved the filming from inside the block. And if you are already even with the Saturn than buy a brand-new transmission and ask for 5000$, or become a transmission guy and savior for all of the cars from this generation. 😁😁
Thank someone, who will remain unnamed, for connecting up with you a few years back and turning us onto Weirdbeard. I was just thinking we got to be getting a new video one of these days! Nice long line too. Keep up the fantastic content.
@ChadWilliams I belive I know of the "unnamed" person you mentioned. I think his channel is Firestone Auction Rebuilds, or smething like that. Beard is the real deal, and that other guy long forgotten.
@@robertwitkowski1650 Yep, thats exactly how I found this channel and deleted the other "person" too, always thought there was something not right about his dealings.
Damned old waves plates. Bought a 2008 Acadia at auction for $1900. Needed wave plates. Quoted $4000 for a new trans. I passed. Actually sold it to a guy that was going to fix it himself or exactly what I paid for it so I saved my ass. But I’m so glad you did this video so for future reference! Thanks beard you’re doing us all a big favor man!
Here I am on vacation and really enjoy the relaxing video. It doesn't get any better Mike. Your can do attitude and the freedom to perdue it is what made America and Americans distinctly great!!! Thank you Mike. I'm praying & hoping for a great year in 2022 with both you and Kayla's channel.
The camera work is excellent. Great job Mike (and whoever is filming you). This video made me learn so much about engines. I am so grateful for that. Thanks.
Do you know how rare it is to find a channel ( especially an auto one ) without a single dislike? Just goes to show the true loyalty of your fan base. Keep it up my friend =D
WB I just wanted to say your video presentation and editing is top notch and makes watching your videos so enjoyable.... 10/10 You are now my main rebuild watch on You Tube ..... Love ya work.... 👍🏼 😎
Well now u know why this car was at the auction. I'd be tempted to grab a tranny from one of those Saturns at the junkyard u talked about - which probably just has the factory defect - and fix that. Good stuff WB. You do good work.
OUTSTANDING !I really love your hands on videos!!! Beats the hell out of some of these "walk around" videos. I'm sure I speak for the majority. We want to know how to FIX STUFF !! HooAh?
fantastic video again, to think in the future all the kids will be trying to fix these sorts of repairs with a laptop in their hands. This is what I call hands on and I love it. Thanks for all the lessons.
Hey Weird Beard, took a chance and looked up parts geek I think it says they have 11 camshafts in stock for the 91 Ford F-150 made by Melling, I hope that helps you. They also have Comp Cam's and Ford Racing Variety of Prices.
Its been pleasure watching 48 minutes of your video and forgot all my worries during this time❤ Learning a lot from your videos Mike. Wish you and family very prosperous new year
Good discovery on the stock camshaft lobes being worn down to a circle!! A new mild RV camshaft from Summit, etc would work with out upsetting the other stock components and fuel injection/timing etc.
Another great video Mike. Disappointing that the rings was not the issue here. But hay we are all living and learning right along by your side. Fantastic channel. Lawrence from Heathrow London.
@Weird Beard , i notice that at minute 38:15 when you were explaining the reference of the repair kit, you put the piece wrong side way, if you did not notice yet, you might want to check it...

I had a Saturn Aura with the exact same transmission. My transmission died at 59k miles. And I’m extremely easy on my cars. Thankfully I had a GM 60k warranty. They repaired it, I went to go pick up the car and I drove it two miles and the transmission blew again. They had the car another three weeks. I picked it up and it never shifted right. Hello Mike.Since you are just about rebuilding the whole motor, I suggest you pop out the core plugs and replace them too. Cheap insurance at half the price. Anxious to hear that bad boy run when you finish. Do you have a run stand for it? Makes it easier to open the motor after first run if there is a problem somewhere.
Hey dude. When you do your hone, its important to remove the ridge with a ridge reamer. Easy to use, and prevents a hang with your honing stones and prevents rings from breaking during removal. Great video! Using gasoline to clean parts reminds me of back in the day. Helped my neighbor rebuild his combine engine while it was still on the combine years ago and we needed something to clean parts with. He had an old oil well close to his barn so he went out and got some drip gas from it and it worked great. Good times!
We used gasoline to clean parts back in the day when we didn't know better but I would never do that or recommend it now, the danger of fire plus the health risks of breathing gas fumes and skin exposure is just not worth it.
Don't get discouraged Mike, you can do it, just do more research and you will find the solution to the problem. I enjoy watching your videos. Wishing happy, healthy and more prosperous New Year for everyone!👍🍻
Hey beard you need the writing down on that sonnax plate. Also on top of all them steels and clutches there should be a cover plate and a snap ring that goes in to the top groove in the drum, as far as I can remember any way. Look into it👍
Weird Beard, i think you can test the solenoids, put power to them and you should feel/hear a click, or you can use the multimeter to test the coils. PS i am not a transmision guy. PS2 Rewach your video before puting this pile back, because while you were looking at it, you fliped some things. Love to wach your videos and i am happy too see that you are changing everything in the 150 engine, thats how its supposed to be done. Not just washing it and sending it down the road hahahaha . Keep up with the great content THX !
I am sure you checked the linkage and control cable alignment. It might be just a bit off causing the problem. Just an input...I enjoy your channel.. great video.. thanks
The Saturn needs a new drum and new clutch packs the reason you have no third fifth or reverse is because with those clutch is going to engage they just spin in the drum because of how worn down it is
Having Weird Beard explain how to disassemble an engine is kinda like listening to your Granddad reading you a bedtime story back in the day. 🤣
Is there anything that this excellent old school mechanic cannot do? I doubt there is anything he cannot do. You would have made an excellent teacher WB. Much respect and thanks for all your great videos

If I'm not mistaken you accidentally flipped that sonnax plate the wrong direction, don't know if it's direction specific or not
You can test the solenoids and see if they ohm out and or see if they move or might be stuck in there bore....

Been here, done that. On Renault Fuego. Block had a crack and changed all stuff into other block.
Too bad on the Saturn, but you seem like the type of guy that when life hands you lemons you make lemonade. Hope you all have a happy new year 🎉
Truly enjoyed watching your dedication
Great show, keep it up, I'd recommend you check shift solenoid resistance on each one too be safe, good luck. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida 🌞
I'm from Jacksonville too!
WB, another great video man. All the very best to 2022. Really enjoy watching you do your business. Always enjoy your commentary. 👍👍👍🇺🇸🏴
Great videos, much better then walk around videos like other boring youtubers do. (AAR)
Multi-talented you are.
Look into it👍
It should definitely be contained as a unit, not relying on the gearbox case to keep the pressure on the clutches 👍
There are a few replies about a missing snap ring, that would be great if thats it
Awesome Mr Beard! 😊👍👍👐
I have been looking for a brush like that and haven't been able to find one. Where do they sell them?
I am sure you checked the linkage and control cable alignment. It might be just a bit off causing the problem. Just an input...I enjoy your channel.. great video.. thanks
The Saturn needs a new drum and new clutch packs the reason you have no third fifth or reverse is because with those clutch is going to engage they just spin in the drum because of how worn down it is
Mike sorry about your luck but keep at it you’ll sort it happy new year to you and your family
Awesome video. Love them all! Sorry that didn't fix the Saturn I thought it would. Keep up the great work
Nice video. When you gonna finish the dodge Coronet project plz update I want to see content on your dodge Coronet plz
Happy New year Mike and family.
Great video and Happy new year 🎊🎆🎈
Thanks Mike for the FB notification. YT didn't do it again!
There is a video about a 10amp fuse under the hood, that powers the TCM, it may not hurt to check to see if it's blown?
