Dude me and my dad absolutely loved this movie and I Want to Be Famous in fact, my family and I have all watched your movies and loved em. They always trip out when I tell them there was little to no budget in most of them. Me and my dad still stand by the fact we think you could make a really good spoof comedy horror movie. And we would really love to see what you would do with that lol

Aww I’m so happy you and your dad watch my stuff together, that’s really special! As far as a horror comedy goes, I’d never say never. I love the spoof genre and always thought we needed another good one.

I'm so glad to hear you saying some positive things about this film! It certainly does stand on it's own in your catalog, but so does Pretend That You Love Me, so does A Simple Smash and Bash Job Gone Wrong, so does basically every film you've made and they're all wonderful in their own right! As for Taking a Little Time to Feel Sorry for Myself, the opening perfectly sets the tone, little gags like Fort Night and no one having ever heard of Fight Club consistently make me laugh, and the monologue of the voicemail to the girl that would always cry is something I think about often. I understand that it's not the most representative of your now-established style, or the most intriguing to you personally, but speaking for myself, I'm really glad y'all made it💕

Honestly there's something special about your movie and I LOVE it personally.
There's so much passion and you can tell everyone involved is still having so much fun with it. Even though it's rehearsed that doesn't take away the fact that it was a product of love and it shows a lot of respect to the art.
I've watched it more than any of your other videos and I think it's because Bud is just a loveable idiot and he doesn't get the respect he deserves from any of his friends or family. It's good to see him finally accept and probably acknowledge that he needs to grow up and move on.

it's cool to hear the behind the scenes for this film. I just watched it and really enjoyed it. I did notice the audio dub but it was nearly seamless.

This was my favourite movie. I loved the scene with the rocking horse, and ya started riding it like a motorcycle. There are some great jokes in there as well.

The end of I want to be famous always gets me when you're performing in front of your dad. And then you have the montage where you say 'don't wait , do it yourself'. It's been mentioned heaps probably but the fact you actually gained huge success and still growing, make that movie so empowering.

It's interesting to see. I've talked to a lot of artists who outright hate their earlier works, to the point where I started to think it's a standard thing. You look at your early work differently, which is admirable and feels fresh.

Just watched your features last month. I did enjoy this film quite a bit, it's fantastic despite it's limitations. The heart of the work shone through, and I'd say that's the core element of your films. All the best as you round out this decade of filmmaking, and best wishes for the next.

Was the song at the end of that film available for casual listening?
I have to say you captured social tragedy quite well. The trauma of wanting to change something so evidently tragic from the beginning. Being stuck and thinking that this time you've afforded :between: yourself and the problem will make things better. Then; splendidly, :pushing: to move passed this trauma only for revelation to come pulling all that hurt and humanity back on to weigh you down all over again...
-and it's scarily accurate, but funny, too, when you think about how optimistic and full of faith the protagonist was. "We can fix this" was very much the theme right until there was nothing left to fix. I absolutely loved it. We, as the viewer, know how this ends- we think we're ready... We never really are, of course.
Great stuff. You're a treasure, Joel.

I really admired your film I'm Going to Be Famous, it's how I was introduced to you. I have since binged all your movies and really admire the approach and style you've adapted to just "get things done and make a movie". Thanks for reminding the rest of us how it can get accomplished utilizing the things and people we have around us.

It's been exactly 2 years and 1 day since I saw the film (at least according to my letterboxd idk that off the top of my head bahahaha). Back when I discovered your features I mostly watched them in reverse chronology and it was so cool to see how you grew as an artist. Haven't seen the full webseries but the movie edit of "I AM GOING TO BE FAMOUS" is one of the funniest things I've seen. I'm so curious what your professors thought when you showed up with a massive project like that lol. Was it a surprise for them or were they aware? I'm in school for animation and we usually do screenings for all our projects but idk how that would work for a 5 hour project hahahaa. Anyways, hope you're doing well dude! : )
Totally unrelated but since this is a channel about movie talks.... have you seen Aftersun?

    • @joeltalksaboutmovies

My thesis professor knew because I’d update each week with new footage. As far as showing it goes, I just showed the last episode/the ending. And no I haven’t seen Aftersun, but I heard I should!

@@joeltalksaboutmovies it’s a great but incredibly tough film. I have never had that much of an emotional reaction to a movie before but it made me just cry and cry and cry until i rewatched it the next day (and cried more lol). I instantly put it in my top 4.

Hey Joel! I'm really enjoying this new channel. You've really motivated me to pursue my dream and create art without worrying about how professional or how nice it needs to be. I was in a very stressful time at the end of high school, full of self-doubt and despair from the uncertainty of that stage of life, but as silly as it sounds, your mindset towards filmmaking and your pure and honest love and passion for the process motivated me and continues to motivate me very very deeply, I wish you all the best dude!!

Would you be able to talk about Pretend That You Love Me at all? It's my favourite film of yours, above that, it's my all time favourite film. And I'd love to see you talk about it because it's such an interesting idea and every scene and every word feels so honest and real.

Regarding the “I’m Going to be Famous” part, have you ever talked about the inspiration for that? It’s hard to look past the striking similarities to Bo Burnham’s “Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous” that came out a few years prior. I mean even the title is almost identical haha, was this app just random coincidence or were you following his same template?

    • @joeltalksaboutmovies

Not related at all, never saw it! Given my series was set in reality, it was entirely inspired by Nathan For You and Nirvana The Band The Show. It has far more in common with those!

    • @SereneVibrations
      @SereneVibrations Рік тому

@@joeltalksaboutmovies I really loved the part of that film where you have everyone pick what song to dance too, and you wanted it to be your Joel Flava song, I hope this doesn't sound like I'm comparing or making you and Nathan similar but, it feels like because your song didn't win (as good as it was) it allowed for this wholesome moment between everyone involved whereas I could see Nathan if he were in a similar position would've done something that would be funny and formulaic for the show.

Do you think you'd ever try to make a movie that was mostly improv but with a couple of scripted scenes? It could be interesting to see what you produce in a middle ground like that
