I learned what I think is an easier method for pentatonics, based on what string the root is on. Using A on the sixth string (box one) for example. If you want a minor pentatonic sound, play the box one form starting with your index finger on the sixth string A. For a major pentatonic sound, use the same box one form starting with your pinky finger on the sixth string A.
To move up the neck in tone, the A is now on the fourth string (box two I believe). Simply do the same thing. For a minor pentatonic sound, start with your index finger on the fourth string A. For a major pentatonic sound, start with your pinky finger on the fourth string A. Use the same box form. You can use the same method moving up the neck for the 2,5 and 3 strings. You don’t have to think back and forth from what box am I in, and what string is the root note on.
    Anyway, just an idea.

Cool stuff. Do you still play? Also, dig on this, the major scale is just and only groups of 4 notes. Go figure. Look at a diagram- you will never see it the same way again I bet. WWWH WWWH and that's it. W(Do)W(re)W(Mi)H(Fa) W(So) W(La) W(Ti)H(Do) Every string horizontal and vertical you can see that pattern. Easy to hear if you drill it up and down on a single string like the thin E string. Key of C is easy too- no sharps or flats.

To me, the title is Phrygian pentatonic. It really helps me to think of the fretboard in modes.

  • @KirkDickinson
    @KirkDickinson Рік тому

I am a bass player just starting to play guitar. I learned all the Modes and pentatonics a long time ago and in my mind all my numbers are based off the Nashville Number system. 1 is always Major Ionian mode. I learned the pentatonic shapes based on the modes.
    1. Ionian - form 2
    2. Dorian - form 3
    3. Phrygian - form 4
    4. Lydian - x
    5. Mixolydian - form 5
    6. Aeolian - form 1
    7. Locrian - x
Since Lydian and Locrian notes aren't used in the pentatonic, there is no corresponding shape. But, multiple pentatonic forms can be played over other diatonic modes.
Ionian pentatonic can be played over Ionian, Lydian, and Mixolydian.
Dorian pentatonic can be played over Dorian, Aeolian, and Mixolydian. etc...
I have watched several videos about the CAGED system and it just seems confusing to me. I have a decent grasp of the diatonic modes and can play any arpeggio in any inversion all over the bass, but when I pick up a guitar, I am really lost. That minor 3rd between the G and B string really messes me up.

Is it good to jump scales with chords? Does it sound significantly better?
    E.g. if a song is C F G Am
Is it good to play the whole song in Am Pentatonic
as compared to playing Am when the C or Am is played, Dm when the F is played, and Em when the G is played?
Shifting scales based on chords seems really involved, bc chords change really fast.

    • @mojodojo5533

There shouldn’t be a debate. The shapes are the same. You should think about the notes you’re playing either way. The actual note name and the number as it relates to the underlying chord, like root, third, flat 7, #9 etc. Those numbers for the pentatonic boxes are somewhat arbitrary. The CAGED label is in the actual order that the shapes are in. I’ve always called it Caged-a-tonic😂

I started with the e shape moved it up one fret and barred it making an f Barre. Than I figured out 4 more positions to play an f chord. So I learned in this order e, d, c, a, g. I didn't realize that in different order it spells caged. Most people learn an f Barre chord first( e form). Then they learn an Aminor pentatonic scale next (5th fret, E minor form).that's how I started. My teacher didn't know the technical names he called it a lead run or blues/ rock scale. Then I learned the other fingerings from there. I became the guitar teacher at EDWARDS MUSIC in Tampa(Edwards wrote the fretboard logic books about how the caged system works.) I can't understand why other teachers like Rick Beato don't like it, for most students it a good (but not the only way) to organize the neck). My teacher was Johnny K with Bill Haley for 8 years. And I taught Ralph Santolla (death metal god). He also had many students before he died. Musically yours Butch Darby. Pass it on
