Every time I release a video on UA-cam, I make a series of extra content and practice sessions that go deeper. I'm adding new videos all the time! Can't wait to see you there.
I see it all the time. You know what scale to use, but when you improvise, it doesn't sound as amazing as you want it to. This is because as guitarists, we spend a lot of time figuring out what works so much, that we sometimes forget there is a human side to melody. Here we are taking a look at how just 3 notes can change the way you approach your improvisation and make you feel closer to your music. PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO WITH SOMEONE WHO YOU THINK WOULD ENJOY IT.

My biggest problem. Mindlessly stringing notes together! Thanks man.
I think it's called "shredder syndrome" Where many of us don't feel we're really playing unless we run up & down the fretboard!! Easy to fall into!!!🙏🙏🙏
Hey man, you have become a master of the craft of teaching and connecting. Your lessons are no doubt the best, I feel like I'm sitting in a lesson with you, not watching a video. It's incredible
I was thinking the same thing
So true
1000 percent
2000% true
I wholeheartedly agree Jake… Stich is great at teaching feel!
Your lessons are gold, they helped me improve almost ten times faster than any other teacher.
A Stich in time saves nine.
You have a terrific way of connecting with us in our guitar journey..thank u..greetings from AUSTRALIA

Perhaps one of THEE best instructional videos I've EVER seen. Getting back to the basics is so important.
totally agree...all the unsaid details that make the difference
100% this guy is providing an amazing service! He explains things better than any teacher I've ever seen
Thanks Stich. This is EXACTLY where I feel stuck on the instrument. I know my chords and fundamental theory, my 5 pentatonic positions and blue notes, but when I go to improvise it lacks emotion. Just spattering notes noodling over the top that don't seem to be going anywhere... simplifying it down to 3 notes and focusing on emotion and rhythm seems like a great exercise for me right now.
One natural addition to this list would be playing dynamics. Mixing up the volume of the 3 notes and attack style can also have a huge impact. Of course, you were naturally doing some of this, but it would be useful to point out. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
Exactly my suggestion with volume. You might try working on your phrasing, keeping it short and simple like this but also creating a conversation, think of happy birthday, call and respond.
You make take self deprecation to an artistic level! Pretty easy to see that you’re a damned genius and yet as modest as all get out! Keep being yourself, you are awesome!
This really is the best lesson. A little pause here and there makes all the difference.
You are simply the best teacher on youtube right now....listen up folks. If you can't learn and improve by listening to this fella' you just might not be meant to play guitar ;)
With al due respect, You have become “The Guitalli Llama”. Very cool!
Ian stich is one of those greatest of teachers that comes along only once every thousand years. The Plato of the major scale and the Aristotle of the relative minor scale.
THANK YOU!! The first HUMAN teacher I've seen in a LONG time...
People are starved for actual connection so much...
You gotta crawl before you can walk.. THEN you can run wild!
I really enjoyed the driving analogy. My elementary school music teacher also used a car analogy when "flubbing" or messing up. He'd say if you're driving and you make a mistake, do you just say "oh well" give up and crash? No you keep driving. Anyways your example adds wonderfully to this. Thank you!
I've been watching you for like six months. Intermediate guitar player for 20. Wanted to break my cieling and found you. Best teacher I've found in youtube. I love the dead and phish so i relate to a lot of your lesson but they make sense. Also some cat was like "Created this cool progression and it was your correct version of stash, he looked sheepish
this is the one subject for me after 20+ years playing guitar. Great lesson, really appreciate it
Holy shit...after 15+ years of playing this video really put things in perspective. Always trying to play faster and more complicated things whereas in reality it's all about making nice sounds.
I discovered this video (and your channel) today and you just changed my life!
Your explanation on how to play 3 notes with breaks and rhythm completely changed my playing after 30 minutes of practicing. I was able to sound really nice with only 3 notes!
It's the first time over the past 5 years that I didn't feel like I was playing a scale! A BIG thank you!
PS: You have a gift for teaching, thank you again
I decided to subscribbe after yoiu said: "Follow the rules"! Our Zeitgeist is "brake the rules", "think outside the box", "deconstruct", etc. People want to break the rules without knowing the rules, they want to think outside the box, before knowing their box and so on. Music has rules and these rules are important. Master them and you will be free. Freedom is navegating within the rules. The rules will tell you when to bend them. Keep up, man... Your lessons are inspiring...
Thanks for the connecting us.. lots of love from #Sikkim North East India
I think it was Keith Richards who said, "Anyone can rock... not everyone knows how to *roll*" This is a great lesson in rolling. Thank you!
Top notch! This guy is a guru - just what I needed to improve my playing. Very excited to play around with these eight fundamentals using just three notes. Brilliant teacher, very kind and talented. Keep up the great work man! 🙌
after debating all day whether i want to buy a guitar again (after SOOOOO many years away from it) i have watched Stich all day and my decision is made. with a teacher like him, i'm feeling really inspired. Patreon, here I come.
I watch these videos for fun. That’s how great they are; they’re way outside of work
Nice lesson! A few more techniques to try with these 3 notes:
- trills (rapid hammer on / pull off / hammer on / pull off / etc.)
- double stops (with the C on the 5th fret of the 3rd string, and the E on the 5th fret of the 2nd string)
- unison bends -- bend the D up to an E on the 3rd string, and alternate playing that E with playing the E on the 2nd string (5th fret)
Been watching you for a few weeks now. You are a God. Been playing for about 2 years and since finding you I've improved no end. Cheers Buddy
Cheers Barry
You have a lot of great videos, but this one... this one gets me “in the feels.” Honestly, this could be the most enlightening video you’ve done and most likely to be a game changer for aspiring guitarists. Kudos!
Awesome to hear! It’s a video I have been wanting to make for a while. All I ask is please share it with someone to help spread the word.
Damn! One string! I am so glad I found this channel. This teacher simplifies it so i understand what he hell is going on. I am a complete novice, And UA-cam only leaves me confused half the time. So glad for StichMethod
This lesson to me was like a "Key" I've been looking for (About 50 yrs), that "Unlocked" what seemed almost like "The Mysterious or Elusive Secret" to improvising!" I could never understand "How to use all those notes" from Scales, Appregios, etc I've never come across any other teacher that explained it so well! Thank you from the bottom of my "Want to improvise" heart! LOL
Mark (From Northern Canada)
Excellent lesson! Not just because of the info but rarely do teachers on UA-cam appeal to the people that already know the scales and arpeggios. There is much content for beginners and much content for experts (normslly technique based) but bridging these gaps is where UA-cam lacks lessons! Thsnk you my friend, greetings from ireland!
You helped me change the title of the video😉
Oh thats awesome man thanks so much :D love your channel you always nail it :D
So easy to get caught up in learning theory, tabs, riffs, chords, etc., but this video clearly explains the secret of how to play. To express and communicate emotion from an instrument. Tabs and theory can't teach you that. You have to craft that. Ultimately the technique and theory serve as the foundation to give voice through the feel of playing.
This is what I needed. My guitar teacher has been trying to get me to solo and I sound like that guy who gets in a fast car, hits the gas, spins out and hits the wall. This tells me how to take everything I already know how to do - slides, bends, pre-bends, hammer-ons and pull-offs - and put them together. The big ones for me were the rythmic hammer-ons and pull-offs. Also braking - I'm inconsistent with my braking. This is good stuff for me to work on!
'The Drummer' (Mike) story turned on the lightbulb. Best lesson ever to convince my mind to stop running and pump the brakes...
I don't care who you are, how long you've been playing or how good you are, EVERYONE should do this exercise consistently. I had a teacher that made me do a similar exercise at least once a month and it's helped me for 40 years. From my punk, metal and shred phase to my classical, jazz and fusion phase and especially through my lifelong blues phase. The longer I play, the more I get from it.
Amazing clear explanations, not just the how, but most importantly, the why. You really excel at that sir. This has already made a huge difference in the sounds I am making. Thanks again.
I would swear under oath that this is the single best guitar lesson on UA-cam. Thank you SO much for sharing this with us, Sir Stitch.
finally heard someone who can articulate my struggle; gotta try this
Thank you for making it simple, understandable, practicable, effective, and fun.
I’m so glad I came across this channel!! This is how you teach guitar and this is how you play! Thank you so much!! You’re the only channel teaching the soul element that is missing from everyone else’s technical music theory
A good friend of mine has a band, they are pretty good. He asked me to join. I'm really excited about this, but then again, i really have to get better and quick. Your channel is doing wonders for my confidence, thank you so much !!
A lot of what of you is what I've been doing...acting like a runaway car. I don't play drums, but that analogy made it clear. Great stuff!! I'm a subscriber as of now!
Great lesson...again! Perhaps the last thing to add in this list is silence. That empty space is so powerful and where and how you use it and pay attention to it makes the world of difference. It is a tool used in acting, comedy, the visual arts, etc. Thanks again for such a meaningful lesson.
You are right that this is the stuff that UA-cam lacks and the reason is that it is HARD to teach. This is something that one almost has to learn by just putting in the time and playing. Thanks.
I really needed this! Another great lesson!
Thanks for the lesson, I Needed this one.
What an amazing teacher 😍
Ophelia is such a great jam. One of the first songs I ever played live, so much fun to solo over.
In the mind of Ophiela coming out next week.👍
Such a great lesson! Thank you! 🙏
This is probably my first UA-cam comment, and I just had to say this video with 62k views alone covered more and was to the point than other videos with 1M views and 10 mins of fluff content.
Wonderful advice and insights. Thanks!
Thank you, this video opened up a new world of soloing for me. Now I have more melodic solos that enhance the song.
I love this it will help me so much. Thank you for your time.
Simply, an amazing lesson. Thanks!
Your analogies are very creative and helpful.
Superb advice, Thank you so much 😊
this was what i needed.Thanks man🙏🙏🙏
Really cool! Great lesson!
Awesomeness, you have such a great teaching method. Love it !
Ian, you’re such a great teacher. Thank you for your patience with this huge, invaluable class. I hope you get even a percent of the reward that you deserve. Thank you, friend. Best wishes.
Thank you Stich!
Hey Ian, thanks a lot for lesson. I feel you got through to me and have given me food for thought and some things to work on. Cheers.
Thank you so much for creating these lessons 🙏 I really appreciate the efforts you put to help us in learning!
Thx Ian. Loved it! Good stuff! Must practice now! 👍😊🎸
Just what I needed, thanks!
This is the lesson that i have been needing. Brilliant.
very helpful...thanks Stich!
Another good one. Thanks Stich!
Great video Stich! This has really made a lot of sense to me and will hopefully help improve my guitar playing.
Thank you once again for such an awesome lesson!
Really excellent lesson, and really helped me . Thank you so much !!
Fantastic lesson, man - thanks for this. Amazing what can be done with so little.
Thank you! Great lesson!
Been away from it but after watching you after a long time reminded me what a brilliant teacher you are!
This helped me SOOOOOOO much. Thank you for conceptualizing that in such a fantastic way. I had the tools but this really showed me how to use them sound great.
This is amazing! Honestly, one of the most informative lessons I’ve ever had! I love the way you try to do things differently and force your brain to think differently. Love your channel!
Perfect lesson Ian. Just what I needed right now. Thank you Sir !
Excellent lesson, once again. Thanks! Holding off on pull-offs & hammer-ons, genius! :)
Such great and practical tips. Your methods have helped me think and play better. Thank you so much!
Wow that was exceptional insight, thank you so much for teaching with such clarity 👍
Once again, very unique and significant learning experience. Much appreciated!
Thanks again Ian, you're a great teacher !
Lightbulb moment. Awesome.
I know I’m late, but one line in here really resonated after I listened to my own improvisation… that the rhythm of your solo is the MOST important part for making it sound good. Introducing different rhythms has made my improv sound so much better even with simpler melodic lines
So needed to hear this
fabulous lesson here ...thanks
excellent lesson....Gonna run with it this week...Thanks
This was the perfect video for where I’ve been stuck at (for years now 🤦♂️). I came across it this summer and I’m now playing regularly with some other friends. ( I guess technically a band of sorts). We’re now playing Ophelia and I’ve been playing some of the solo parts to it. Can’t thank you enough Stitch.
Another wonderful lesson Sir
I needed this so much. Thanks, Stich!
Very welcome
You never fail to make me smile man. Sending love from Virginia!
Fantastic lesson, thank you so so much
This is just pure gold. Tyvm for sharing with us
It's amazing how the melody of the vocals on Ophelia can be summed up with just those three notes. Emotion... Right on!
What great advice and content 👏
Great stuff as always.
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you.
It’s like you’re watching what I’m struggling with and making videos specifically for me every time
Very, very helpful. Thank you my friend!
Wow great additional learnings to me👍👍
Great stuff. In a similar vein a great guitarist I knew said to me "it's not the notes you put in that are important it's the ones you leave out"
