They're both really amazing cultures, but Japanese culture and people are so fetishized while Indian culture and people are just ridiculed in most Western media, which is such a strange duality to me. I've also had moments where people (white dudes) seem obviously way more interested in me when they find out I'm half japanese. It's always uncomfortable and I never really know how to react to it

She has tried to distance herself from him but he is further proof that she was probably raised in a household that reinforced these bigoted views, even though she views herself as having risen above that mindset.
I really appreciate your perspective, especially how spot on it is. It’s important to know even perpetuating “good” stereotypes are extremely harmful But the amount of times I’ve heard white Americans trying to rationalize it. My high school in the U.S. was 34% Asian. Most of my Asian girl friends from high school have Asian partners today. For their whole lives they could internalize Asian-American identity as familiar, "normal" and wholly "American", instead of as foreign or "other". Never needing to grapple with their racial identity definitely affected relationship decisions.
Indians are not Asian. Indian men actually date out more than Indian women in the UK by double amounts. I'm Chinese and generally Chinese women marry out way more than Chinese men.

Most happa people are wasian, and being someone that doesn't fit into blasian or latasian is once again infuriating. I was having a conversation recently with a woman who said she won't date anyone but Chinese guys who haven't ever dated a white girl because they don't understand how whitewashed they are. I think she thought that was somewhat edgy, but that mirrors my experience. I'm too Asian for most people, but for Asian people, I'm the wrong kind of Asian. I find that i feel the same way amongst WAsians.

The conflict was 30 years long starting in the 60s ended in 1998 and Bend it Like Beckham came out in 2002 where the tension and animosity from that still wouldn't have had died at that point. My participation in this discussion as a white person is limited, but it's important for people like me to sit in on these conversations to make room for the feelings of racialized people, and examine our own actions, assumptions, and programming.
As a guy with a hot Asian wife, this kind of discussion has been a genuine landmine for me. I am mixed race myself so even calling our marriage "interracial" is weird. I really appreciate you going into the issues you feel at 21:45 as it reflects how I feel about how I'm not allowed to see our race as incidental. I happened to fall in love with a woman and she's Asian. I'm also arguably Asian. We shouldn't have to look into it further than that, and yet I get questioned on it probably monthly.
I'm half Asian too, married to another mixed race Asian. It's interesting because my kids are even more mixed. I associate myself being Asian because I'm not white passing. I'm mixed race but native American and mixed Portuguese and Spanish. Honestly though, the only thing really bonding me with Asians is that we experienced the same racism. While it's not my place to speak on 80% of the video nor am I the target demographic so I never leave comments and am just trying to listen and learn and be as respectful as I can on someone else's platforms/channel I will say it's seems to me erasure is what most folks seen to(rightfully) be worried about an as time goes by shallow soul-less vibey aesthetic "representation" for simply "representation" sakes seems to be what is actually upsetting people as well as giant media companies/mainstream marketing platforms doing a horrible job of showcasing culture while also using mixed people as the "ideal poc" and calling it a day (a lot of times ones who don't even care as well which is interesting) . There is a big difference between South Asians and East Asians. South Asians can date white women but choose not too because they have their own women. East Asian men want to marry white women but white women do not like them. Also East Asian women are sellouts to their men whereas South Asian women are not sellouts to their men. In the 1800s and 1920s, many lascar Indian sailors and Pakistani soldiers married white women at over 40%, but as soon as their own women arrived, that number fell to 8%.
I’ve not read the book in question, but I think it’s kind of interesting how the person in question assumes that because her dad only dated Asian women after her moms death that he must have had an Asian fetish, when the possibility that maybe the trauma from his wife dying may have lead him to try and date those who were similar to his late wife also exists. If there’s extra context in the book that makes this clearer please let me know, as I am curious.

As an Asian guy, it’s alright. Growing up I got a ton of disrespect and racism from Asian women, that I just grew to not prefer them or have them in my life. I’ve have many biracial nieces , nephews and cousins of all racial mixture , Ashkenazi Jewish , Korean , Persian and Scottish. Somehow they all have been mistaken for Puerto Rican or Dominican. I am a Foundational Black American , meaning my ancestors were in America before there was a United States. Given that fact I’ve have British and Nordic ancestry as do most descendants of America’s chattel slaves. Yet I’m a very dark Black man and I’ve never been mistaken for anything else but Black. White supremacy is a global religion with many adherents and worshipers. Many of worshipers ancestors were converted to the religion at gunpoint and at the whip. The pinnacle of white power and beauty has been the Anglo Saxon for the last 300 years. Even though Ashkenazi Jews founded and run Hollywood, early leading actors both men and women had to fit into Anglo Saxon beauty standards. This involved many cosmetic procedures, makeup and surgeries. Non whites like Mindy Kaling were programmed from birth to worship Whiteness by mass media and even the government. Any non white writer, producer, director and actor in Hollywood will tell of the time they were forced to create white heroes,lovers or characters where none existed in the script so that their project could get funded. Good news is that times are changing because there is money to be made. Soon you will see fully Asian men as sex symbols , but first Asian women must see Asian men as more sexually desirable than white men.
It’s funny because Kaling is Black too and people with a little higher of a percentage and less Caucasian you usually see it strictly the other way around.
This is interesting because I once asked a girl from Indian if she viewed herself as Asian and she said she did not. A lot of these identities have been placed on us by ppl in power who tended to oppress other groups in a colonial way.
What about the myth of the dominant white male colonizer in a couple relationship? Do we have to assume that the woman does not have much agency in the relationship? I personnally have not met that many Asian woman who fit this submissive stereotype. When you bring up movies like Full Metal Jacket, one needs to realize the movie was based on an autobiography about one guy's service in the Vietnam War. If those who lived through the war think that was an actual depiction of what really happened, is it really fetishization? Or is it cherry picking culture to find things that reinforce some theory about depiction of Asians in Western culture? Oliver Stone made a movie called Heaven and Earth which was an attempt to show what a Vietnamese woman in these circumstances would have gone through from her perspective. Not too many content creators today mention this movie because the current culture wants to create story about how Western culture intentionally misrepresents Asians. Watching videos like yours make me think your work is more about adopting this belief system and spreading it around than actually trying to understand this phenomenon.
I think you entirely missed the point. It's a distributed social phenomenon, not a way of painting every white man in an interracial relationship as a "coloniser." Yes, in the most simplistic form lots of people argue like that, but the video is nowhere near that simplistic. There's always an argument that minorities develop internalised racism and seek out a white person as a preferred partner. I see it all the time. But the Full Metal Jacket part wasn't about that, she was referring to how damaging the stereotype became from what was clearly a throw away inconsiderate piss take of a scene. I've seen it and the film is in no way, in THAT scene, trying to say something deeper. Even if it is illustrative of the hardships faced by Vietnamese women, the framing doesn't take the audience there. And no it's not cherry picking. Lots of this stuff is also backed up by empirical research about stereotypes and implicit bias. It's solid stuff and I encourage you to engage with it in depth rather than "cherry picking" apparent weaknesses in the argument of a UA-cam video. This is essentially a secondary or even tertiary source. You should read the primary literature to get a better appreciation for the points being made.
It's funny you bring up full metal jacket. When I saw that as a kid, that Vietnamese sniper definitely made me think of Asian women as strong and courageous. I always wondered where this submissive characture came from.

There is a big difference between South Asians and East Asians. South Asians can date white women but choose not too because they have their own women. East Asian men want to marry white women but white women do not like them. Also East Asian women are sellouts to their men whereas South Asian women are not sellouts to their men. In the 1800s and 1920s, many lascar Indian sailors and Pakistani soldiers married white women at over 40%, but as soon as their own women arrived, that number fell to 8%.
I’ve not read the book in question, but I think it’s kind of interesting how the person in question assumes that because her dad only dated Asian women after her moms death that he must have had an Asian fetish, when the possibility that maybe the trauma from his wife dying may have lead him to try and date those who were similar to his late wife also exists.
If there’s extra context in the book that makes this clearer please let me know, as I am curious.

As an Asian guy, it’s alright. Growing up I got a ton of disrespect and racism from Asian women, that I just grew to not prefer them or have them in my life. I got my life together and got my blonde white woman. Asian women are invisible to me, not even worth holding doors for. I can at least agree with them that white is better. I don’t even intend on having Asian women around my potential child’s life.

I’ve have many biracial nieces , nephews and cousins of all racial mixture , Ashkenazi Jewish , Korean , Persian and Scottish. Somehow they all have been mistaken for Puerto Rican or Dominican. I am a Foundational Black American , meaning my ancestors were in America before there was a United States. Given that fact I’ve have British and Nordic ancestry as do most descendants of America’s chattel slaves. Yet I’m a very dark Black man and I’ve never been mistaken for anything else but Black.
White supremacy is a global religion with many adherents and worshipers. Many of worshipers ancestors were converted to the religion at gunpoint and at the whip. The pinnacle of white power and beauty has been the Anglo Saxon for the last 300 years. Even though Ashkenazi Jews founded and run Hollywood, early leading actors both men and women had to fit into Anglo Saxon beauty standards. This involved many cosmetic procedures, makeup and surgeries.
Non whites like Mindy Kaling were programmed from birth to worship Whiteness by mass media and even the government. Any non white writer, producer, director and actor in Hollywood will tell of the time they were forced to create white heroes,lovers or characters where none existed in the script so that their project could get funded.
Good news is that times are changing because there is money to be made. Soon you will see fully Asian men as sex symbols , but first Asian women must see Asian men as more sexually desirable than white men.
It’s funny because Kaling is Black too and people with a little higher of a percentage and less Caucasian you usually see it strictly the other way around.

What about the myth of the dominant white male colonizer in a couple relationship? Do we have to assume that the woman does not have much agency in the relationship? I personnally have not met that many Asian woman who fit this submissive stereotype. When you bring up movies like Full Metal Jacket, one needs to realize the movie was based on an autobiography about one guy's service in the Vietnam War. If those who lived through the war think that was an actual depiction of what really happened, is it really fetishization? Or is it cherry picking culture to find things that reinforce some theory about depiction of Asians in Western culture? Oliver Stone made a movie called Heaven and Earth which was an attempt to show what a Vietnamese woman in these circumstances would have gone through from her perspective. Not too many content creators today mention this movie because the current culture wants to create story about how Western culture intentionally misrepresents Asians. Watching videos like yours make me think your work is more about adopting this belief system and spreading it around than actually trying to understand this phenomenon.

I think you entirely missed the point. It's a distributed social phenomenon, not a way of painting every white man in an interracial relationship as a "coloniser." Yes, in the most simplistic form lots of people argue like that, but the video is nowhere near that simplistic. There's always an argument that minorities develop internalised racism and seek out a white person as a preferred partner. I see it all the time.
But the Full Metal Jacket part wasn't about that, she was referring to how damaging the stereotype became from what was clearly a throw away inconsiderate piss take of a scene. I've seen it and the film is in no way, in THAT scene, trying to say something deeper. Even if it is illustrative of the hardships faced by Vietnamese women, the framing doesn't take the audience there.
And no it's not cherry picking. Lots of this stuff is also backed up by empirical research about stereotypes and implicit bias. It's solid stuff and I encourage you to engage with it in depth rather than "cherry picking" apparent weaknesses in the argument of a UA-cam video. This is essentially a secondary or even tertiary source. You should read the primary literature to get a better appreciation for the points being made.
It's funny you bring up full metal jacket. When I saw that as a kid, that Vietnamese sniper definitely made me think of Asian women as strong and courageous. I always wondered where this submissive characture came from.
