    Any multi-racial people out there reading this? 🙋🏽‍♀ For the sake of my mind, please, I need to know someone that has gone thru something similar than I have 😭 Being multiracial is a very complicated feeling/situation: if youre too proud youre pretencious, if you dont have the look youre not enough, but if you do look like it youre discriminated. This video unpacked a lot of feelings that I didnt want to think about, I had repressed them because every time Ive wanted to voice them every one had kind of shut me down (perhaps my issue is that I havent met anyone that has the same issues). In my case I have a complicated relationship with ethnicity, because my father is caucasian-french and my mother is half "white" latina (theres probably some european in there), 1/4 sinhalese and 1/4 black. But my problem is that Im the only child of both of them, but they both have several children and I dont look like any of them. My father has like white, blue and green eye kids and my siblings on my mothers side look south asian, the kicker is that somehow with those genes I actually do look latina (ive had people say to me that I look like im from Chile, which is not even my flavor of latina, and some times even a little eastern asian). So its really strange to grow up in this enviroment where even my own family would mock my features (when I was little my mother would say to me that I was born with my eyes upside down, becuse theyre smaller than hers, and I thought it was true), but from the outside I would tell my friends that I didnt know where I fit and them saying like "What are you talking about? Youre clearly latina", almost like anoyed that I was acting "pretencious" (yeah well its easy for you to say when youre a full breed). Or having people come to me and speaking english (and even russian once), then asking my fully french sister what did I looked like and her being like (also anoyed) "Latina, of course". And then not only that, but being raised with one culture you dont look like is a whole other layer to unpack. I know theres probably no one reading me rigth now, but just getting out of my chest (not nowkning anyone with a similar experience yet) mayes me feel better. And if theres is someone that read this and has gone thru something similar, I hope its at least validating to your experience.

    24:31 I always thought of God Bless America - And All the beautiful women in It more as an ironic song making fun of the political landscape at the time rather than an attempt to make a patriotic-esque song, specially because of the use of gunshot sounds and the lyrics “Even walking alone, I'm not worried” while also poking fun at the “Free Land” ideology of the US

    I have a question- can you help me understand what you meant at the end when you said understanding her place in the american political landscape as useful and selfish? I loved your video- but that was the one talking point i didn’t quite understand. Thank you!

      @emmachangkredl 23 години тому

      Hello! I meant it’s both selfish and useful because she does really focus on herself on the album and its a bit self indulgent, but its also useful to look inwards and understand your own place within the political landscape :) hope that clears things up?

    I’m only a quarter Korean because my mom is half Korean and half Puerto Rican and my dad is white, like his siblings are various levels of redhead, so I’m basically Emily from PLL lol. But my mom was born and lived in Korea until she was a teenager. She always had Korean friends who were also from Korea even after she moved to the US, so I’ve always felt connected to being Asian American. Except most people think I’m either whatever slight ambiguous ethnicity is prominent in that area (native Alaskan even I was growing up, Mexican in California) or Filipino. I’ve always felt like an imposter with Korean people, Puerto Rican people (and I recently learned that my mom’s bio dad was afrolatino which also was interesting to learn bc my mom has always looked mixed to me but I thought we were like JLo Puerto Rican) and white people. But then I read crying in h mart. Holy shit. It took me about 1.5 years to finish it because I basically sobbed my way through it. I’ve never ever felt so seen. On top of that, it’s so interesting how popular Korea is now in the west. I always grew up with Korean skincare, Korean music, Korean shows since the 90s. When I was a kid, Japan was popular and so many kids didn’t even know what Korea was. I love that it’s more popular but it’s wild. Also growing up, on multiple occasions, white guys would tell me they like Asian girls and Asian guys would tell me I’m not Asian enough for them.

    Interesting points made, but i wanted to ask what kind of complex experiences would you like to see more of from wasian characters ? I'd like to think more about this as it's so intriguing and this video really gave me great food for thought!! Im also wasian, and i do see that many of these wasian characters hinge on very relevant themes that i myself have experienced. Obviously there are many flaws and thosen aren't helped by the scarcity of these roles and celebrities. But it is true that, even having grown up in asia but going to a white school, there is a huge emphasis on physical appearance - to assimilate to this appraised white look would earn you a lot of privilege within the white confines of the school but also within an east asian population. The more white passing = prettier = the easier the life. Language is another major topic and culture too. And yet even knowing both languages there is a sense of non-nationalistic belonging. I am neither fully white nor fully asian and i grew up in none of my originating countries. In my experience, i broke free from the longing of being more white when i moved to more cosmopolitan cities such as london. There, being different became a highlight and i felt appreciated for my diverse culture and how I've mixed them both into my life - from values, etiquette and perspectives, i felt like a concotion of both my countries' history and culture yet without wholly being a part of them. And yet, the longing for whiteness still lingers sometimes, and its something that seems so superficial when it comes to looks and nonetheless it still heavily impacts my life. So many of these representations, even if theyre not well-made or casted or scripted media, i do appreciate many of their interpretations of wasians and there is in my case a pervasive alienating feeling when you don't find your cultural community. I suppose the wasian experience is largely uncategorical and non-generalisable, but i thank uou for giving a space for wasian conversations :)

    Lust for Life was the first Lanas political album, there’s a line before and after this project. Actually, the first half of the album is like the “old Lana” and the second half is like the “new Lana”, the one who talks about politics, poetry, feminism, the future, getting older and living the simple life. It’s a transitional album for me.

    As a wasian, I've noticed there's a factor to social identity that is based on just how you look. My sister is fully Japanese and I am half but she has received racial comments and attitudes all her life, while no one ever suspects that I'm asian unless I tell them because I don't have any of the obvious facial features. This has led to my introductory phrase being that I'm half Japanese, but there are times I feel like an imposter because I wasn't born in Japan, don't know the language, and my mom had already been somewhat Americanized by the time I was raised. However, I don't feel like I'm white either, despite my family's jokes. I don't see myself in American TV shows and movies and there was only one time that I saw someone who had a similar face to mine (Angela Aki).

    I’m black, and it’s nice to see that other races are dealing with the same thing, and also surprising. Some of the wasian actors named, I didn’t even realize were half white. It made me realize that when you don’t have representation of what Asians actually look like, it’s easy to think the media is correct. Just like how a lot of white people don’t understand that biracial actresses keep being promoted as fully black characters

  • @user-qf5kl6cv2y

    I think it's important to mention some of the earlier drafts of the songs and the early tracklist of the record because it somewhat emphasises the feeling of being torn between the past and the contemporary time, as well as political themes, though features more personal imput on the topic with draft titles like "Right Reasons" and "Good Intentions", though also some borderlime nihilism such as the draft "End Of An Era" and "Something Real". For example, the demo of Lust For Life talks more about how she feels the time is unstable and she feels trapped in it. The demos also generally have a more eery witchy production than the released versions.

    There should not be this modal view of mixed race children; Either their one race or the other. One can argue that they are not half this or half that, but that the two race that makes up the individual makes them FULL citizens in both. It's dehumanizing when we talk about people's identity solely on race and colour when it is obvious that this is too narrow of a lens.

      As a full Asian American immigrant, I never related to the idea of any so-called identity crises. I don't think I understand it. I've seen this sort of half this half that talk even among full Asian peers as I was growing up. I also never understood that, the whole comparison to bananas or being too white washed or a FOB or some such.

    As much as i love this video, i think it only represents American wasians. As a wasian, non American. My white part is french British Swiss (it’s complicated) but something ive noticed is being American is kind of a strange identity, for me growing up in Asia AND london, i speak Taiwanese mandarin , English, Korean and Japanese and i feel so much more connected to my asian culture than most fully asian Americans (probably due to me living there) it feels like Americans SPECIFICALLY over every other white culture because Americans can be ethnically from Africa, Latin America, and now Asia too- its like your ethnicity doesnt define you if your from America which is really really weird to me. I think every other wasian who arnt related to America, living wise, ethnic wise feel a lot more close to there asian Side

    Also i think there is a major distinction between critiquing representation in a film or TV vs critiquing REAL PEOPLE for being a “bad” representation of their culture. Do they have some responsibility to be a good role model for young people and to not feed into stereotypes or fully feed into our idea of whiteness?- yes, but it’s also unfair to burden young artists and actors with the idea that it’s their job to perfectly represent an entire culture of people with everything they do. It ultimately puts the burden on 20 year old asian girls to resolve the underlying issues of how minorities have historically been seen and portrayed in media, an issue that they did create yet are they are expected to resolve.

    Saying they all returned to their initial selves in reductive to the point of being erroneous in my personal opinion. By that time barney had engaged twice, married once, and had a child, which they show to have completely changed his stance on one night stands. Marshall and lily are still together, but they've grown and matured in some ways. Marshall was close to being tied down to his job as a corporate lawyer, but ultimately worked toward becoming a judge which he felt would have a more meaningful impact on his environmentalist goals than even being a environmental lawyer. I think your pov gains more steam if we're just talking about ted and robin, though, I don't really see personal growth on their end, but they also weren't as problematic as barney to begin with either.

    Quick correction: 'Lana del Rey' is not a character hut rather a new image. Lizzy Grant (her former stage name) also cling back to nostalgia. This was always a part of her artistic identity. So it's more like how lounge and jazz divas of the 40s and 50s present themselves on stage. Gaudy and theatrical for a song but not necessarily a character. She did however, had a character named Carmen for the song with the same name and in 24, she impersonates Nancy Sinatra.
