If you leave the room, but convinced Lazel to follow your order, she won't attack you, but will doubt her intentions. Regardless, you can leave the room and still enter the artifact - which will change a few dialogue options. Which is what I did, because Vlaakith is not my queen, and I kinda want to find Orpheus if he's somehow alive.

I let shadowheart murder lae'zel in the camp, so I didn't have to worry at all about keeping her happy

Yeah…at least with shart your approval makes her doubt her mission…laezel is still a grumpy frog stupidly loyal to a lich regardless…and in my romance run, I did everything I can to hurt her deeply..I enjoyed that so much. Plus my other run where I simply killed her at the creche was great…the party was better off without her. I replaced her role easily with minthara. Who is honestly an evil companion done right and is much more complex and deep than laezel and astarion…istg I would trade those two for her if ever
The point I took away from this is that you can't kill the guardian anyway, so you might as well not even try.

fun fact you can also pickpocket the “key” from the captain and go thru the portal yourself
