I believe part of the reason it has garnered such a bad reputation is because so many games implemented them poorly and only used them as a cheap gimmick.

Overall I feel like the wii was ultimately poorly equipped to bring IR aiming into certain fields. For example, I'd like to point to Metroid Prime 3 actually. Being able to aim with the controller was great. Fabulous. I loved it. But I had to point at the edge of the screen any time I wanted to turn, and that was a major hindrance to play. MP3 could have benefitted greatly from dual analog control, left stick for feet, right stick for head, and IR for the arm cannon

Gotta give props to Nintendo for sticking with the tech they believe in instead of abandoning it at the first sign of outcry. Microsoft dropped the Kinect like a hot dinner plate and I’m pretty sure Sony had whoever created the Move silenced... permanently.

And I really really really loved the Move. I don’t know how anyone can believe we aren’t fools for trusting Microsoft and Sony to support their own accessories and features. Sony has a great gyro controller as good and as capable of Nintendo’s.... and they never support it for FPS.
I saw the new PS5 controller and couldn’t help but laugh... I’m sure that too will have a bunch of new and fantastic features that Sony will never support!

    • @DarkDyllon
      @DarkDyllon 4 роки тому +10

Yeah, they stick with their gimmicks, look at the Wii U, universally hated and underselling all around (maybe because Nintendo never actually puts good hardware in their systems and it shows?)
The Kinect with the Xbone was a sour spot from the get go, instead of having it as an add-on they decided the FORCE people to buy it with a 500 euro/dollar package instead of the competitor the PS4 which retailed at 400 euro/dollars.
Also that my Kinect actually died by absolutely nothing, the fan just stopped working and it never turned on again, not my problem since it was a paperweight regardless.

Funny; my first time with gyro aim was on the Wii U with Wind Waker HD. I started out just using it to make small adjustments and corrections almost without even thinking about it, and I ended up using it almost completely in place of the stick.
By the time I got Breath of the Wild on the Wii U, I was completely used to gyro aim. Sadly, I was also used to the touchscreen inventory that Wind Waker HD had, and I spent Breath of the Wild thinking that navigating the huge inventory would've been more intuitive with the touchscreen. Imagine how I felt when I remembered that, originally, the game was going to have a touchscreen menu, and it was gutted from the Wii U version when they made the Switch version.

Yeah, BotW really showed me how good motion controls can be. Too bad that official Joy-Cons need to be replaced regularly due to motion controls, forcing me to buy third party Joy-Cons which lack motion controls. Luckily these Joy-Cons have better control sticks making aiming with them much more doable than it is with the official Joy-Cons and the tilting puzzles can be beat without motion controls also.

You also don't want to take too long to shoot or else your aim might drift.

Calvin_Coolage I feel like the reason PS and xbox gamers think dual analog is the best is because developers used a crazy heavy amount of Aim Assists in the 7th Generation. I actually like the lock on feature and think the game works better when the focus is on pure DPS and weakness exploitation rather than aiming. Also the really cool tricks are VERY difficult to perform on Wii where it's difficult to turn around and it feels weird using lock on because it either gets in the way of motion aiming or if you turn off motion while locking on it feels weird when you snap off/kill an enemy and the motion jerks out to where your hand is resting. The snappiness of play on Gamecube makes it easier to control turning and perform general speedrunning tricks. Just my opinion, though.

Daniel Callahan The motion controls in DKCR really hindered my enjoyment of that game. So many times I would roll when trying to ground slam or vice versa, and in general it just felt so imprecise. Thank god Tropical Freeze did away with it. As for Mario Galaxy, I actually didn't mind it much in that game. Sure, it was unnecessary, but it felt fluid enough that I didn't mind. I think in general though, game developers need to realize that there are times where motion controls make sense and there are times that they just don't. It seems like developers don't understand that it doesn't have to be all or nothing and that we should just evaluate the added worth of motion controls in a game on a case by case basis.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a perfect example of what happens when a developer fails to properly implement all the little tricks that help make stick aiming a smooth experience, you end up feeling like you have little control over where the cursor lands on sceen. As far as I remember, Breath of the Wild has zero aim assist and horrible deadzones, but it still plays like a dream thanks to those gyro controls. Splatoon plays wonderfully too. Both the gyro and real guns use angular displacement to aim. Both also need trigger discipline to keep on target while firing. Mix this with the frictionless medium the gyro can operate in, and you have a control method that is very close to the way an actual gun behaves. I tell people to aim the gyro like a barrel is pointing out the front of your controller, and you have a little turret in your hands.

This video describes everything I’ve been saying to people for years.
I’ve been using the Steam Controller for about 2 years now and the only game I’ve been unable to comfortably play on PC with it something like LoL.
The trackpads, gyroscope, dual stage triggers, grips, etc, are the future of game controllers and yet nobody cares. Gamers have had the dualshock since 1997 and it’s very hard to remove over 2 decades worth of muscle memory.
Gyro gives you fine tune aiming while a trackpad can give you extreme camera flips along with relatively fine aiming as well. Paddles allow you to bind important functions like jump and reload to the back of the controller, allowing you till still aim while using those actions.
Dual stage triggers allow you to bind related inputs in a way that feels intuitive: think of something like F zero, you could bind accelerate to pulling the trigger, then boost to the digital click at the end of the same trigger. Or you could bind crouch to full pull and ADS to soft pull, allowing you to easily crouch while in ADS or give you the ability to easily slide and ADS with one pull of the trigger.
So many different functions that they could be used for but nobody cares. The only innovation we see on controllers outside the SC are things like the elite controller or scuff controllers but those go for a premium price so the average gamer wouldn’t care.

It also should have launched with some calibration to your screen size to make it more precise. In many respects being "almost there" is more jarring than being far off.

No but motion controls being used in games that play either as well or better with traditional controls isn't a reason to why motion controls are bad in general. As time goes on developers start to understand which games benefit from motion controls. While both BotW & SMO are pretty recent when compared to games like SMG1&2 (I wish that they made 3) you can definitely see that motion controls aren't used for every single action and I'm sure that in a few years motion controls will be a distant memory in these genres.

Between all your videos advocating to at least give gyro a chance and that motion controls CAN be done correctly and implemented correctly; you have changed my outlook on motion and now I am checking for it in games where it's an option. Not all games implement it well but I'm glad it's becoming more of a standard included feature. It's really up to the devs to make the experience to use the motion controls as simple (or complex) as possible to be useful. I think Splatoon and Splatoon 2 really nailed it and are some seminal games that sparked the conversation around motion controls actually being a superior way to play the game. Personally I still stick with standard controls and high sensitivity when I play Splatoon but I can see how people like it. I think motion/gyro implementation is great in place of or to compliment something like aim assist. Those fine adjustments to your shots can be great in games like Zelda Breath of the Wild where you just need to move it at the exact right moment for the smallest adjustment to get the perfect shot. I prefer games that tend to use gyro/motion as an *optional compliment to create a complete control setup versus games that are mandate motion (or touch) controls. I've played quite a few games where motion was an optional feature but just did not seem optimized for gameplay at all. It's really touch and go in my experience. Anyways thanks for changing my perspective on motion and gyro. Also love the channel I'm a new viewer and always checking for new videos or rewatching old ones; the edits are great.

whenever I stop playing Splatoon 2 or some other Nintendo game with gyro aiming, and try some other game on the xbox or whatever, it's REALLY WEIRD. Like, it just feels clunky and painful to try to aim at even a still target, because I am trying to aim at the enemy, not in the general direction of the enemy, because I'm used to games which don't let your aim snap to your target like that. Of course, trying to actually do it manually would be a nightmare, because of how counterintuitive it is as an aiming mechanism, but it is a little funny to me that I'm having trouble on the more "hardcore GaMeR" consoles because they're trying to keep what is essentially an "easy mode" on all the time, and never bring more conventional skill into the equation.

I think the benefits you describe really only apply to shooters, and the issues people had with motion controls on Nintendo consoles are mostly valid when discussing other genres. I remember well having to waggle and swipe the remote around to perform trivial actions in platformers and the like. For precision aiming it’s clear that thumb sticks are pretty much the worst solution in use, and in fact console development priority has severely damaged the FPS genre, which is why newer shooters are mostly basic, unchallenging and rely on elements other than shooting and movement to stand out (see Overwatch for an example).

Motion control aiming isn't even something the Wii innovated. There were many light gun games, like House of the Dead, Resident Evil Survivor, not to mention Duck Hunt way before the Wii. Sure, they are somewhat of a niche genre, but people can get behind the idea of pointing a fake gun at something instead of a stick.
The problem with motion controls on the Wii is that the early Wiimotes were pretty imprecise, and most games were not designed around motion controls, having poor implementations of them. Also, many people (including me) don't want to bother moving around when playing videogames. It's not as comfortable as holding a controller, and it feels goofy and unnecessary of most games. For these reasons, motion controls can break the immersion of playing a game instead of enhancing it.
I'm curious to experience VR or even AR gaming in the future though. When the technology advances to fix some of its current problems, it could be pretty incredible.

Well, I have visual problems and the motion control doesn't fit to me because of that. What I reproach to Nintendo is not USING Motion Control. The problem is IMPOSING it. As an example, you must shake the hands to make a roll in Donkey Kong Country Returns when you can push a button and make it better and easier in the previous SNES tittles. I think you must have options, but not impositions in this. With the point of view of accesibility, the Wii is a HELL to me (and I have it). I cannot play far from the TV and, to play certain games like Zelda Skyward Sword, I had to put the sensor bar in my right and play with the body pointing the sensor bar and the head pointing the TV because I cannot use the Wiimote near the sensor bar by design.
    TV
    ^
    Me -> Sensor Bar
I'ts no matter of hate or love in my case. The Wii was a great problem for me and now I use emulators to compensate this problems. In any case, I prefer the mouse+keyboard and I don't understand why this system cannot be used in consoles as an option for certain players. What is true is that you musn't combine controls in online. If some players uses sticks and anothers motion or mouse, the stick players will loose probably and that's explained in the video. But for local or offline games why not use it?
What the gaming world needs is not hate but options and see what option fits better for the most players. :)

I did want to say though, you mentioned Skyward Sword and needing the sensor bar off to the side. The aiming/pointer in that game was all gyro, you didn't need to point it at the sensor bar at all. Well, I take that back, when you first boot the game there's one prompt you have to point to and click it, that uses the sensor bar. But after that you're taken to the gyro calibration (lay it upside down on a flat surface), then the main menu, and everything from then on is gyro based.

i remember i used to play MW on wii or black ops and WaW and get so mad because i got killed by someone eventhough they werent facing me, blaming the motion controls, but it really was an advantage and i never recognized it, id get mad when i lost to it, but then say its crap why use it? then moved to pc gaming, shit i even want to rebuy all those games and play it again on my wii... too bad all the servers for those games are shut down and people hacked them liked crazy.
    great vid, very amazing

I'd highly recommend Splatoon 2, as its the game that gets motion the best. Seeing pro players snap their reticle onto enemies without aim assist is mesmerising.
