My 1986 has 535,000 miles on the original 22re, never been rebuilt. Amazing.
My dads 1982 had 465k before he sold it about 10 years ago. It was mint until it was broken into twice. 1 owner never rebuilt. He drove to and from the city every day almost an hour each way. Went through 3 clutches. The 3rd time he figured he'd have the trans rebuilt too and the guy he took it to said no it was still like a new transmission after all those years. Looks like theyre still using the updated 1GRFE as well with the dual VVT-i, that's a good engine.
Are they still putting in the A750E/F's on them? Those 5 speeds are very durable.
I love my 4runner! I have the 05 and have had very minimal upkeep. The truck has 275k miles and I use it to haul my 3000 lb cargo trainer for work. Mine was built in Japan, has upgraded towing package which includes the transmission cooler. It blows cold, runs like a top, and still looks great!
This might be the first person I've heard recommend the V6 over the 2UZ-FE V8. I get the concern with the timing belt but those engines are legendary, especially if you maintain them like you should. I love mine.
That’s because V8 is more maintenance than v6. I just spent 2k to change the timing belt and water pump but I still would rather have the v8 for the power and towing capacity.
In the v8 to replace transmission filter you need to remove exhaust. Not to mention the starter you need to remove intake.
@@bert0g honestly, I'm biased with the 6. But most people are not going to tow more than 3k pounds, well within the 6's 5000lb limit.
Yeah, he made a mistake there. These are non-interference motors, so blowing a timing belt is not going to destroy your engine. And the v8s are highly preferred over the v6s, because they're just more robust motors, and they do tend to last even longer.
Brother (or sister) I hear ya! My 2004 with 220k and a V8 is running like a top! You can have my V8 when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!
Got a 2000 4runner 4wd with 220,000 miles and still runs great!
I wished the 3rd gens and newer were officially imported to the UK.
I had a 1995 4 wheel drive with manual transmission. The last year they were imported by Toyota UK. Got up to 188,000 miles and then it failed inspection due to a rusty chassis. Gave it away to a friend who intended to take it to Bulgaria and use it solely for offroading.
Scotty, the type of guy to call a 4Runner “luxurious”
Jay Mac not for nothing, the 4th gen 4Runner is very Lexus like. I can get where he’s coming from.
The limited model is luxurious and also cost a lot to I'm talking about a brand new one
travel78 the GX and the 4Runner share the same platform, the gx is just the really luxurious version of it. But frame and suspension wise they are the same. The downside with the GX in my opinion in the long term ownership side is the air suspension. Although it’s not super expensive to replace, I like the simplicity of having Regular shock absorbers that aren’t even expensive to replace especially from the dealer. I have an 03’ bought it with 145k on the clock. Still had the original suspension in place, shocks, struts, springs, control arms. All worn with the mileage and still had an amazingly smooth ride. Just recently I decided to replace everything. Just to be on the safe side, with ball joints. Replaced my springs, shocks, and both upper and lower control arms. The truck rides like it’s brand new at 160k.

Then a few other things that weren't necessary but I did anyways including sway bar bushings, shifter bushings, Tacoma antenna (old retractable one was broken), external transmission oil cooler. Prior owner had done the alternator and installed a new radiator. There's a big difference between a high mileage vehicle that requires and arm and a leg to keep running and high mileage vehicles that just need regular maintenance. High mileage doesn't necessarily mean a vehicles' reliable. I know someone who has a 2011 Cruze with 219,000 on it and they always say how reliable it is. "I've only had to replace the transmission twice but it just won't quit." What?
@@benchattin lol I agree some people dont use logic.
I also have an '07 Escalade, with 160k. But, I'd rather drive my 4Runner any day of the week. It's also, surprisingly, more useful for hauling large amounts of stuff without having to remove seats and protect the nav screen with whatever you can find.

You mean reliability? I hope all cars wouldn’t be a gas hogging SUV.
What’s the point of buying a 2wd 4Runner? Defeats its purpose of life.
Yet some people believe Scotty supports Toyota but in reality he says don't buy V8 vs V6. He is pretty honest in every video. 👍
The V8 has Full time 4WD. The V6 is part time 4WD. So even if you purchase a V6 with part-time 4WD. It will run 2WD from the rear until you engage the 4WD.

I love 💗💗💗 my Toyota 4Runner! It’s a 1998 limited edition, 194,000 miles and still running pretty STRONG! No major problems. I make sure it’s well-maintained!

Samiiraee, I was about to get rid of my Toyota 4Runner 1998 this year because it’s old and buy a 2000-2004 Toyota 4 Runner. I changed my mind!
I'm so happy for you! If you can, have both! 😂

Actually quite amazing they offered it and also a manual.
What about Suburbans and other large SUVs? honest question
A R not sure on those usually the bigger ones are body on frame and the midsized ones are unibody but I’d google that.

Dont forget to change the timing belt!
@@themexicanstaringfrogofsou5268 yup, was done 20,000 miles ago along with the water pump
Me, too. The V-8 is lusted after. He is wrong about the gas mileage. I get a solid 20-21 mpg around town and at turnpike speeds. I can get 28 on the highway if I drive 60. The V-8 is not made any more for this model. I just like to have the power when I need it. Timing belt? No problem, just change it out every 90,000 miles and have it inspected on a regular basis. Sure, the chains are more durable, but if you take care of business, no problem. My 2006 is like a GOD. It runs and rides as good as brand new. Yes that is correct
As long as you got a 4 liter V6 you have a chain. I am hoping 4runners never have the 3.5 like they have in the tacomas because you have to rev it higher to get the HP and....it has a belt.

I've got a 2003 (4th gen) Sport Edition 4WD V8 with 225k miles. I regularly do long cross country road trips in it and I put that 4WD to use pretty frequently. Still running smoothly as ever. Reliability is important when your several miles down an old dirt road in a remote area that only sees maybe a couple cars a year.
Most Toyota vehicles are well built. Quality products at reasonable prices & they last for decades if properly maintained.
Scotty - thanks for the great videos - all are very informative!
I have a 2015 4runner trail edition and am very happy with it. The only issue I had was with the Park/Neutral/Drive sensor that went bad and needed replacement. Not cheap but I had insurance to cover it. I had more issues with the local dealer than the car itself. I don't if it's normal but they tried everything they could not to fix it, up-sell me for everything and then lied about what they did service. A total disgrace for what I think is a great car. I will never go back to a dealer for service.
Thanks again for all your great videos.....
Scotty must of had a pretty bad experience with a pawn shop selling him a bad chainsaw!
I've had 5 and I loved each of them. Passed on to children and they still have them.
I’m happily driving around in a 2003 SR5 with the V8 that’s been passed down from Grama, to Mom and finally down to me ❤️ Really don’t think there’s anything that I don’t like about this truck! It performs just like it did when I started learning how to drive in it, and even with close to 295k on the clock now, the quality is so top notch.. there are absolutely no squeaks/rattles or shimmies to speak of. I’m really impressed the most with the trucks rock solid powertrain, though! I follow Toyota’s recommendation with only using 91 grade fuel and for an almost 20 year old V8, 20mpg in mixed driving is totally fine by me! That ‘ol 2UZ motor still has gobs of torque on tap & the 5spd auto continues to shift effortlessly!! Yeah, unless the worlds fuel supplies dry up or the thing (god forbid) gets totaled, I’ll be driving my beloved Beige Betty ‘til I’m a little old man 😆❤️
The reason for this is because the Japanese are honest and don't participate in the corporate practice of "planned obselesence" (ie purposely engineering things to fall apart after a certain amount of time so you will be forced to buy something else).
