The biggest roadblock for me is the Kanji. When I started self-learning English (because school kinda sucks at that) it was just about understanding since it's the same writing system. So all resources, audio or written, were fair game. While I did plenty of listening passively (playing games, watching movies) most of my active effort was through reading and writing since I can do that at my own pace. Can't really do the same thing with Japanese without Kanji, but learning those at the start can be a huge motivation killer.

I feel you, but on the other side, knowing how to read a kanji every time you encounter one feels really good!
