Fantasy on Trial - Are Fantasy Books Really THAT Good?

  • I have stayed away from fantasy for quite some time, writing it off as unserious, childish, and simple. I lay out my assumptions here and then re-evaluate them in light of my recent reading of Brandon Sanderson, Robin Hobb, Guy Gavriel Kay, and Joe Abercrombie. Sometimes change is necessary!

A very eloquently stated video! It was very refreshing to hear somebody outside of my fantasy echo chamber speak about the genre from their perspective. I’m glad that Tigana worked so well for you as well, I enjoyed it a lot. Can’t wait to chat about our reads in more detail!

@@ColinsCornerYT I didn’t think of it like that but cool, yeah I’m definitely an outsider when it comes to fantasy! I was just motivated to talk about how people’s tastes and preferences can change if they read a little outside their comfort zones.
I am quite excited to talk about Tigana. There is a lot to talk about. Same with Atlantis Gene.

Agree on Harry Potter, I read all 7 and evenas a kid thought they were dipisable trash!
I almost read Twilight in high school but that would've just to pick up girls tbh.
I also am turned off by the length of Wheel of time.
Your previous dismissive view of fantasy is very common and where I started.
My #1 rec would be John Gwynne, I started with The Shadow of the Gods by him and he instantly became a fav author! The last book in the trilogy comes out next month and I'm ultrahyped!
My fav self pub fantasy author is J.D.L. Rosell, I love his Ranger of the Titan Wilds series which has giant kaiju like creatures.
Both of those are in the epic subgenre and I think are the kind of thing you're looking for.
And as usual I have a firehose of other recs if you want em.

Also if Twolight is the "romantasy" you were referring to that's a "paranormal romance" not really a "romantasy" fyi.

@@zachreads Whew! I’m glad I’m in good company! I am familiar with Gwynne, haven’t read him but see him all over BookTube. If you have the time, email me your recs! Unleash the firehose!
Also, I think you are right. Epic fantasy seems to have the most allure from what I can tell.
I’m also enjoying some urban fantasy too.

My wife doesn't like the Harry Potter books either. Linguistic problems and childish expressions turned her off. 2nd book of the Twilight books is indeed New Moon. I'm so glad that you've come around to how awesome fantasy is, but yeah, those books are definitely NOT representative of the genre. I enjoyed both, but I chew story rather than prose :)

Also, Lion-Witch-Wardrobe is definitely a series. Narnia. It's got a lot of good stuff.

Glad I’m not the only one! And glad I got to read these others. I love books that have strong good v. evil vibes. Situations like Sam Buckland finds himself in the middle of 😉
