Providing a social psychological perspective as I review various books from various authors across a number of genres. Although I am a fan of mystery/suspense crime thrillers, I like to read from all genres, from fantasy to children's books (which are often fantasy if you think about it; a zizzer-zazzer-zuzz is certainly a fantasy character)!
A focus of mine, on this channel, is indie/self-published books because there are a lot of great books out there that do not get much attention because they do not have the help from one of the major publishing machines. We do not neglect them here! Of course I review mainstream well-known books from large traditional publishers, but they will not be my focus.
Hopefully you enjoy these reviews, get something out of them, and maybe learn something new!

Taking Novel Insights In A New Direction - Exciting News Through A Major Channel Update
Always great to hear you talk about the books you've enjoyed :)
😂 of course you use the picture of me with one of my DNF books…Have Brides Will Travel…lol 😊 too funny.
@@kevintowle9665 😆 I was only 45% confident you were going to pick up on that. Just trying to establish the inside joke my friend!
I disagree. You CAN dance to AC/DC. I will not demonstrate as I am too old now but…it CAN be done.
@@Travsbookshelf I think I can concede and take your word on it.
This sounds like a fun writing exercise. I find myself trying to guess which stories or parables the author may have chosen. There are some Biblical stories that are so bound to the Near Eastern context that I can't imagine transplating them without either altering them considerably or rendering them almost nonsensical. But there are always aspects of the human experience that are fairly universal. Maybe I should just check out the book and find out. 😉
Whoops, I'd asked about true crime on another video before seeing this. Sorry about that. 😊
You know, I read a lot of nonfiction, and I'm aware of all of these, but I haven't read a single one. They all sound interesting, so I'm sure I'll get to at least some of them eventually. The material about avian intelligence would probably sit highest in my current interests. You mentioned having read more true crime. True crime is probably my only truly "guilty pleasure" reading. 😊 It can be fascinating, but there's definitely a lot of low quality exploitative trash published under the banner.. I'd be curious to know about some of the true crime books you would recommend. I'm not even opposed to recommendations that aren't necessarily commercial "true crime," but rather get into abnormal psychology and criminology in a more serious or even academic way.
Enjoyed the commentary. I used to be more of a fantasy reader, but not to a level of being "well read" in the genre. These days I still enjoy many novels that have fantastical elements, but I'm much more hesitant about material that is self consciously composed to be marketed as capital "F" Fantasy, especially if it's part of a never ending series of shelf bending doorstoppers. Quite frankly, my attitude about the genre probably jives pretty closely with your initial assumptions, with the caveat that there are indeed isolated gems well worth reading. I haven't read anything by Guy Gavriel Kay other than The Silmarillion which he assisted with. However, my understanding is that he creates stories within fantasy versions of recognizable historical civilizations and events, so I might find that sort of thing appealing. I continue to like the Tolkien legendarium because of how his expertise in linguistics and literature informed his creative work. Some more recent fantasy I've enjoyed was written by R. Scott Bakker and Steven Erikson, probably because their stories are informed in interesting ways by their backgrounds in philosophy and archeology/anthropology, respectively. Sensing a pattern here yet? 🤪 But anyway, I hope you continue to find work within the genre that surprises and appeals. I always figure that good is good, and I'll gladly take it wherever it's found. 😁 Have a good one.
@@BryanM.R.-prionic1 I do see the pattern(!!) but that version of fantasy is very appealing, at least to me. Historical fiction with a supernatural element is quite fun which might be a blend you like. Relatedly, urban fantasy draws my attention the most but I’m not sure that it is actually my favorite but I do like the concept of it. I think for me, fantasy will be hit or miss. My threshold for valuable fantasy is relatively much higher than in some other genres where the inherent value of the genre gives it an advantage.
This challenge has been in my mind since you posted this, I want to do it but I feel like I would be so nervous and awkward asking the staff haha. I think I'll give it a go
That’s awesome!!! So far everyone who has tried it has survived! I went over what I was going to say in the car on the way there. It helped me prepare a good proposition. If all else fails, tell them it’s a part of a challenge; they will play along.
Cool! I recently stumbled on your channel, but I'm just starting to have a look at your earlier uploads. I'm a bloke whose formal education was in chemistry, who currently works as an agricultural laborer, and who reads a little bit of just about anything. That makes me really appreciative of commentary from teachers and other professionals with a perspective more specialized than that of a general hobbyist like me. I look forward to further exploring the channel and watching future uploads.
@@BryanM.R.-prionic1 Awesome!! I can appreciate any perspective because we all tend to think narratively. Regarding my channel, I hope your bar is low! 😬
Orphan -The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (Heidi would work too) Genre blend -Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay Off the rails (i n a good way) -Earthlings by Sayaka Murata ( Raptor Red and lucky red were also buddy reads with me so there's three connections, with Lucky Red you wanted a Western and I wanted a Historical Romance and we were both disappointed lol) Thunderstruck -Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao blew my doors off! The little story I'll tell here is that I used to be very very good at Guitar Hero and Thunderstruck was a very fun song to play, although it was only on Rock Band not Guitar Hero and rock band was a worse game. About LA - the Harry Bosch/Lincoln Lawyer series' by Michael Connelly (yeah that's like 31 boocks but I'm counting it) Fav romance -The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë (also Anne is the hest Brontë sister (hot take🔥)) Celebration -Homecoming by Ray Bradbury (a must-read for Addams family or Munster Family fans) Fire -Fires of Vengeance by Evan winter Audacity -Ducks Newburyport by Lucy Ellmann (over a thousand pages of a stream of consciousness inside the head of an anxious housewife where almost nothing happens. I still liked it though)
Something I've been forgetting to mention. The channel "reading this life" is starting a booktube boot camp for new and small channels, you can check her community tab, also she's part of a booktuber writing group you might be interested in.
Nicely done Logan! I read Devil in the White City. Enjoyed it, a tad wordy but good.
@@kevintowle9665 I have read a couple narrative fictions from different authors and they seem to all be like that. At least I haven’t found one that isn’t yet. They have all dragged a little bit so far, at least at some point, but I have still really liked them.
Raptor Red sounds like it could be an interesting story. For whatever reason, stories about the mythologized Americsn West have never clicked with me, but Lonesome Dove is so widely recommended that I almost feel pressured to give it a chance. However, I'm not sure I've ever heard someone talk about it being funny before. Interesting. By the way, most of what I did at school dances resembled standing and talking, whether the song was danceable or not. My occasional attempts at dancing seemed to elicit mournful pleas that I never do such a cruel thing again, so it was better for all concerned that way. 😊 Have a nice weekend.
@@BryanM.R.-prionic1 That’s pretty accurate. My dances were as if the radio station played your request every time!! Less of a dance and more of a guaranteed play of your request for your favorite song.
I love that I have a series on your channel! 😂
@@kevintowle9665 Rent free my friend!
Great tag my friend. Lonesome Dove is gold
@@Already-Overbooked My bad for not giving you a better shout out. I will on a video coming soon!
@DrL_Reads No stress my friend! :)
Fun answers. Books about witchcraft hysteria are almost always interesting to at least some degree. I haven't read "Devil in the White City," but I'm familiar enough with H.H. Holmes to know there's only so bad it could possibly be. I share with your experience of horror FICTION not being personally "scary." That being said, the most horrific and disturbing book I've ever read is Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking" about the mass atrocities carried out against Chinese civilians during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Took me a while to "recover" from that one.
@@BryanM.R.-prionic1 You know, I have heard of that book before. I can take difficult reads, would you recommend it? Is it a good historical account?
@@DrL_Reads It's a very engaging book that's accessible to a general readership. As for statements on historical rigor, I can only speak as a layman. My understanding is that there is criticism regarding the author's emotional perspective on the subject (How could anyone NOT have one?), and that there may be some improper simplification regarding motivation and aspects of Japanese culture, and that there is some debate over the overall tally of victims, and that she may have even made some objective errors regarding minor points of fact. However, from what I see, she brings some compelling evidence to bear, and at the end of the day, the major points that a huge number of victims were subjected to utterly horrific atrocities, and that both the immediate perpetrators and the leadership that allowed it to continue deserve every bit of infamy that's been heaped upon them, is beyond any kind of reasonable dispute. Chang's (journalist) book captures this on a level sufficient for me, but I'm sure there are more "rigorous" alternatives by "proper" academics. Hope that helps. 🤪
@ It doesn’t have to be academic. I was just curious if it was convincing as a non-fiction.
@DrL_Reads In my opinion, yes. Chang presents compelling evidence of the big picture. If there's space to argue about the psychology of the perpetrators, or if Chang may have misinterpreted X piece of evidence, and therefore the death count may not have been 300,000, but instead a mere 200,000 🙄, I'm hardly inclined to dismiss the trumpeting chamber elephant perfuming the place with its voluminous excretions.
@ Understood! I appreciate your recommendations.

This sounds fantastic!!
Interesting concept. I may try this in the future and reference back.
Great insight here Logan! Perfect books because they fit the reader…interesting.
For me, top books all depend on my mindset at the time and what I want from the book. Sometimes I want a book that is just a fun adventure, while other times I want a book that has me thinking deeper on a subject or perspective.
Gulag Archipelago is the more commonly refrenced Solzinetsyn (just guessing at the spelling here) book. Also recommended. And if you want to read a novel about the same camps but under the czars, Dostoyevsky's House of the Dead is a fiction novel but the author spent time in one of these work camps. Great idea for a video and just in general!
@@HideAndRead Just realized I didn’t tag you in the description. That, my friend, has been remedied. Consider yourself tagged!
@@DrL_Reads I'm pretty friendly with the local booksellers but I'm on it! Any excuse to buy more books and make videos.
Upper tier books become brainworms. I find myself revisiting them in my head randomly, even out of context. I quote them and refer to them to support arguments and philosophy.
Yes! 100% Jason
@@jasonpcrawfordauthor Yeah they just stick with you, whether you want them to or not. It is very hard for me to use fiction to support arguments for anything though.
@@DrL_Reads I use the arguments of the fictional characters, their viewpoints. Sometimes their sayings. E.G., “A wise man can never be insulted, because truth can never be insulting and untruth is not worthy of notice.”
@@jasonpcrawfordauthor Yeah I can get on board with using fictional characters and stories as examples of beliefs or perceived truths but not as the basis.
@@DrL_Reads no, I definitely don’t believe the stories are true 😂😂
Now THIS is a great idea! I love it, it’s like….a book piñata but instead you offer money to a bookshop keeper instead of batting a papier-mache object! My only problem though is I’m not sure of any non-major bookstores in my area. I have the one B&N and the rest are Books-A-Millions, which I would guess are equal to “main chain” as B&N. I believe there may be a used book warehouse in a little town not too far from me so I could check that out. If worst case scenario would a local library count? I believe mine may sell books but they are very limited on stock. It may take some time but I definitely want to do this challenge!
@@Travsbookshelf I would just say adapt it any way you can. The fun part is just having someone else pick your book(s)!
I have One Dy in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alekandr Solzhenitsyn on my tbr! One person I talked about it with said "it will knock you on your ass" which sounds good to me. A small Russian booktuber I like is Mary Reads if you want some more Russian recs. I've considered doing this at a black owned bookstore and asking them to pick several wildly different books in very different genres by bippoc authors.
@@zachreads That would be awesome and definitely capture the spirit of the challenge! I will definitely check out her channel! Thanks Zach!
Years ago, in the early '90's I tried this concept while clothes shopping. I told the guy about how many shirts, slacks, ties etc & approximate amount I was willing to spend overall. It went great until it was time to finish up & I said, "I still need underwear..." He gave me a deadpan look & said, "that's where I draw the line, you are on your own!" Actually, turned out to be a positive experience! I could see the book approach to be really interesting & expand one's horizons.
@@musicroom7185 Hahaha that is great, and I agree with the employee’s response. Were you asking as a joke!?
