    I live in my parents house ....my father passed away 12 years ago.....my mother moved out to care for a man she has been dating for the last past 6 years when he got diagnosed with cancer. I do not have the financial capacity to fix our leaking roof, nor do i feel comfortable with reaching out to her when she is elderly and financially stretched at this point in time. Thank you for doing this video even though you are a car guy because i am basically a 38 year old widow with 3 children and i literally did not know what to do about the leak until watching this. I have had to learn how to do a lot of things myself caring for this massive old house, so i have learned how to use a drill and things. I am pretty sure i can handle this before the next big storm comes tomorrow night. Its been the 3rd wettest year on record in my area (near Philadelphia) and....the seriousness of this is that i have been doing a bedroom renovation and currently have my entire room in the family room, new mattress and my entire closet included and this is where the leak is.....i am panicking so.....now i know what to do! Thank you so much for leaving this up considering this was put out 6 years ago! You are such a hero to me and my family right now! Thank you. Best wishes.

    It's good your putting forth the effort but your tarp needs to be under the shingles otherwise it's just going to get water under the tarp and leak anyway and I definitely wouldn't recommend screws either.

    I watched your 7 minute video before hopping up on our roof to tarp in front of one of the 3 rain storms we get/year in Southern California.
    It was well spent time! 😀

    Shouldn’t you have tucked the tarp under higher shingles to avoid rain from getting under the tarp, then screwed the 1x3 down?

    I like the idea of rolling the tarp around the 1by. Last week..I went from the other side of the roof about a foot. I hadn't thought about enclosing the 1by..but on a dry day before removing the fasteners.. I plan to mark where the screws are. Also probably a good idea to mark with contrasting color. Maybe a waterproof chalk. I don't know what to use yet. I have already picked up a 18 dollar gallon of sealer. I was planning to seal the holes. Of course, the less screws the better. I may have been better to use flex seal. Idk
    btw I have a 🎸/🎹 channel with close to 1k videos.. often I'm at my workbench outside and filming. Thank you for this video. Carpe Diem. Seize the day.

    IMHO.
    I would start at the bottom. And put the next tarp above the first tarp and layer and overlap over the lower tarp. Keep repeating until you get to the top and over the peak. Thus, water will run down each tarp cascading onto the next until off the roof at the eves.

    • @Cmoney-2cd

      It may cause new leaks later down the road but it's just a temporary fix. Eventually you have to repair it when it's not raining. I recommend replacing the plywood underneath since it is going to be wet. After that, install the new shingles on. Worked for me because the cost would be higher if it gets in the walls or develops mold. Money is tight right now so DIY is on the rise.

    What about the screw holes you put in your shingles?? And aren't you supposed to tarp over the eve so water don't run under tarp??

    • @ThrottleGrotto
      @ThrottleGrotto  6 років тому +2

      in my experience, the tarp acts as a seal, provided it's tightly screwed to the roof. It is, however, a temporary solution.

      @@block_the_spot just use some silicone or roofing tar that all comes in a caulking tube, the tar is black so not too visible as well the silicone is not very visible if at all, no need to "heep" it , just feel the holes and watch out it can get.messy quick so use a red no drip caulking gun from Lowes and keep a rag with you at all times and probablycocer the tip in between filling holes...cant believe they do not talk about this but these guys may just leave it which can comprise the roof and cause tons more damage in the future :/

    • @ThrottleGrotto

      unfortunately, this is only a temporary repair. It's best to replace damaged roofing material once you have a batch of clear weather to do the job correctly

    how long will this last ? how long can you leave this up before roof repair?

    • @ThrottleGrotto
      @ThrottleGrotto  4 роки тому

      I would assume that depends on the UV and weather degredation of the tarp material. Some areas of the country they last a long time, others the sun and wind wear them out quick.

  • @normpaddle

    Thanks. But doesn't the water above just drain down the roof and under the top of the tarp?

    • @ThrottleGrotto
      @ThrottleGrotto  4 роки тому +2

      When I did this, the tarp acted as a seal against the roof between the wood. You could also use an asphalt sealant or a silicone based one to seal the tarp to the roof if you're replacing the shingles as part of the repair.

You might also look through the comments, there's been a bunch of good suggestions on how to improve the sealing against the roof.
