Very emotive vocal by Canadian Rick. A little bit of Joe Cocker too. Such a great talent, gone too soon. Great guitar work. RIP. Fab video clip. Thanks Rick Danko. Vive les pop rock and retro freaks...
Richard Clare "Rick" Danko (December 29, 1943 - December 10, 1999) was a Canadian musician, bassist, songwriter and singer, best known as a member of The Band. (Wikipedia) Rest in Peace
I JUST FUCKING LOVE RICK. ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL. AND YOU SHOULD TOO! NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE, IS LIKE HIM. His unique bass, voice, passion, attitude and presence comes around only once in this lifetime. I miss him to this day.
1000 % i knew Rick and Elizabeth Rick was the Best , Kindest Giving ,Fucking Takented More Than anyone Knows Miss His Laugh and Sense of Humor A Big Kid !!!! Loved Him
This is an interesting step in the journey of a unique musician -- such a sweet soulful voice, such a great bass player, and it's great to hear those songs from his wonderful but hard-to-find first solo album.
Not criticising his band members, they are obviously great musicians but when we consider the magic that sprang from his fellows in The Band it must have been so hard to find that magic again. God bless all of the Band who have passed. I remember Music From Big Pink when my history teacher brought it to school saying : No history today you kids must hear this.
Don't forget ALL 5 of The Band members, they were all amazing. I do love Rick, his soulful voice and endearing personality draws you in.@@zacjohnson164
@@debs4mysweetbaby I’ve noticed that a lot of my favorite bass players were guitarists first. Both Danko and Paul McCartney were guitarists, and became the bass player in their bands because they had to. They both played with a pick, and both play extremely intricate yet melodic bass lines.
I was lucky enough to see The Band live when they toured Australia in June 1988. They played The Enmore Theatre in Sydney. Only 2 original members. Rick Danko and Garth Hudson. Jim Weider was on guitar as was Blondie Champlin. Levon's nephew was on drums. I still have fond memories of that night. So good to hear Rick sing!!!
Hey Eric - I was at that gig; i remember Twilight being the highlight...I believe it was Buddy Cage rather than Jim Weider playing that night and he was a secret sauce in the mix that night, especially on that song. You didn’t buy the shocker of a concert tape at the bar, did you...awful, but the Enmore gig was tops
As ä Jersey Boy, I went to dozens of shows at the Capitol Theater in wonderful Passaic. What great sound that place had and it was the perfect size. Yes the great old days and yes, I missed this fine performance.
Crying as I watch. What an amazingly talented guy. I dont even like this song. He made it amazing. No wonder The Band was legendary. You get 5 of this guy and there you have it. SUCH A LOSS!!!!!!!!!
He looked terrible when he appeared in a small bar in Philly days before he died, but still sang like an angel, and Garth was there playing keys, it was magical and a fitting swan song for a great musician.
ChopsHannigan Hi chops and thanks for sharing,,I am from the philly area and Rick is my rock hero...Then and now !! I was wondering if you have anymore details of that show...Set list,,were the fans engaged,,Etc. ?? hearing Rick was in the area where I live and i had no idea upsets me,,,I could of been their to see my hero,,but as we all know Rick was not in good shape,,And he was taken peacefully in his sleep...
It was at the North Star bar, a tiny joint up a flight of stairs, Danko covered a lot of Band material cause Garth was in full swing, and I don't keep set lists, he sounded way better than he looked, it was a last minute gig cause I only heard about it late that afternoon, the thing that irked me, everybody but this one yuppie couple, the gal kept yik-yakking over the music and kept going on and on about their too fabulous lifestyle she just wouldn't stfu, so finally I grabbed the guy by the collar shook him a little and said one more word out of her and i'm going to paste you, they got right up and harrumphed to another part of the bar.
ChopsHannigan Thanks again chops for your report on rock and roll history...I did not know Garth was their !! Out of all the band combo's during their solo projects it seems Garth was always with Rick most of the time...To me that say's a lot about Garth's admiration for Rick !!
+ChopsHannigan Always had a voice of an angel. My brother had just made your point to me last week. Danko is my favorite musician after Jerry, beautiful voice and soul
extraordinary, wonderful performance by a great band, and Rick Danko at his peak. Run out of superlatives for the musicianship. I loved the solo album when it came out, wore it out. I saw Rick at The Palomino club in North Hollywood, CA in 1984, when he appeared with Paul Butterfield. They were just feet from me... Rick said "We're in your living room, isn't this great..." had a word with him at the bar, what a gifted musician and sweet man. I'd like to hear who were the players here; we know from others Terry Danko, Denny Seiwel, ... incredible.
I wasnt born when Rick started, but I came across this being a big Bob Dylan fan. I dont worship any other than God. This guy Rick is a great artist and musician. I love his voice and he's having a great time performing. It seems to be from the heart.
Was he opening for someone on this '77 tour? That's a helluva band he's got there and you'd have felt a bit let down if they only knocked out an hour as headliners.
Sometimes when he toured he would do two shows at a venue, early evening and later. Even the Band did that in the 1980s when I saw them. Also, someone posted a Danko-Butterfield video of a live show in Colorado from 1979 and they put both sets on from the same night.
I just realized Levon and Rick kept performing after The Last Waltz. So much music to explore ,I’m thrilled. I was under the impression they , excepting Garth, were far too deep in their addictions to be functional, let alone able to perform.

Sad to see. What's with all these musicians on a free ride. No Leon Russell coattails. Danko, as great a talent , was always a sideman and to damaged by this time to pull something lke this together. God love him....

Oh that bass and that face !!!!! Unique voice that can’t be duplicated. Rick sang with a tear drop in his vocals.
Great comment!! Love and miss Rick so much!!💜
That yearning soulful high notes have always endeared Rick and the Band to millions.

Love to watch him jump around!
Such a talented guy, just love his voice.
How did he sing, play bass and dance around like that? Is there a posthumous Grammy we can award Rick for multitasking?
And what's even more amazing is that before The Band, Rick never played bass, just guitar!! He learned it because they didn't have a bassist!!
Love Rick’s syncopated phrasing, absolutely unique.

Terry Danko should've been a member of The Band, too.
